Which minutes see the most goals and xG in Premier League games?

For this study, I obtained multiple seasons’ worth of Premier League data and analysed 60,000+ shots from 2,000+ matches to understand when expected goals (xG) are accumulated and goals are scored during a typical game of football.

It appears that the second half of games is where the action happens; 15% to 20% more goals and xG registered than in the first half.

The bookies already know this, offering odds at 2/1 for ‘most goals in the first half’ and just evens for ‘most goals in the second half’.

How does this affect us as Fantasy managers?

Whenever you use an ‘xG per 90’ stat, you are adjusting a player’s xG by the number of minutes they’ve played. If they’ve played fewer than 90 minutes, you are uplifting that player’s xG to a level that assumes they played the whole game.

READ MORE: FPL tools: Tips on how to use the ‘per 90’ filter

But we’ve just seen that not all minutes in a game are equal in terms of scoring opportunity. In the first half, both sides perhaps have more energy, eager to execute their respective game plans – but once those elements start to wane for one side, that’s seemingly when more chances are afforded.

Therefore, when players start but are taken off at 60 minutes, they are missing the best bit of the game; any xG per 90 stat would under-represent what they could have achieved. Conversely, a player introduced on the hour mark is playing at a time with more xG and any adjustment would over-represent his level of xG if he played a full 90 minutes.

A real-world example of the last sentence is Darwin Nunez (£9.1m) against Fulham in Gameweek 1. He was subbed on at peak xG time and registered 0.7 expected goals. That would take his xG per 90 to 1.43: in theory, the extra 0.73 would have been difficult to obtain in the first half of a game due to the game state.

Proposed Solution

If you know a player has been subbed on or off in various situations over your data period (e.g. the last six Gameweeks), then adjust the ‘xG per 90’ by +15% to +20% for every game he didn’t play the last half an hour and reduce the xG per 90 by -15% to -20% for every game he didn’t play in the first half.

Other than the xG per 90 ‘fix’, it also emphasises how important it is to own players that play 90 minutes, whilst having your player benched and subbed on at 60 minutes isn’t the worst thing ever.

Caveats

This is just averaged information – it doesn’t necessarily represent what will happen in one single game of football. Over a longer period though, it’ll be more representative.

This tweet below from Son of a corner is an example of the volatility in the xG timelines from Gameweek 1:

Grim start, losing 0.2 & 21 points from late tinkering then not seeing the early price changes in regards to Kane>Haaland. Busy week with work and holiday preperations! Decided to waste my wildcard and correct my mistakes. Kane, Rash, Neto, Patterson, Greenwood all out. Feel much happier. Didn't even use my first wildcard last season as it clashed with the need to free hit over Xmas so I've no qualms playing it now to get back on track.

Saliba & Da Silva or stick with Patterson & Dewsbury-Hall?

    Sanchez
    Trent Robbo Saliba Cancelo
    Salah Grealish Martinelli
    Haaland(c) Jesus Mitro

    Ward Da Silva Andreas Williams

Happy to give him two more games. Can always double up the Leic keepers or take some money out of defence to get an 8.0 in or even get Rash back if Ten Haag sorts things out.

De Silva is a good prospect but will get less minutes than Dewsbury-Hall especially now Damsgaard has been brought in by Brentford.

    Bottomed:

How much of a rotation risk is Bailey? Is it worth finding the extra 0.5 to move to neto or someone else who’s 5-5.5m? Gross maybe?

No. Keep Bailey for at least one game and then sell him if he blanks again.

Am going with both Aaronson and Harrison as my differentials this week.

Leeds attack is more than decent and well priced and Southampton are relegation fodder if ever I have seen it ! Defensively shocking.

Get rid, downgrade him to a 4.5 and upgrade another starting position in your team. You do not want to lose value on Bailey which will happpen soon.

if the players are really affected this weekend by a warm British summer's day as much as people on here think, the world cup is gonna be terrible isn't it?

The one positive I'll say for the Qatar World Cup is that European based players won't be fatigued at the end of a long domestic campaign.

Supposedly the average temp in Qatar in December is around 24-5C. Anyone who thinks this weather is just a classically warm British summer is in denial about our climate

I'm not denying global warming is happening, I just can't see players melting in 29 degree heat. Your average la liga match must be around that, there'll be kids playing football for 8 hours straight outside that day. I think the professional athletes will be fine tbh

Yeah sorry, nothing personal, just the issue gets me pretty riled up. My weather site is predicting 33C for London on Sat, so edging into tougher territory than 29 if its right

no need to apologise man. I get it. I got the 29 number for Manchester as people seem to be basing this discussion around Salah vs Haaland for captaincy. It will definitely be a hot day, I just think people are overegging how much it will affect the players.

I remember the hot weather in 94 but I don't remember the world cup being shyt. Romania and Hagi, Bulgaria and Sweden run to the semis, support for the Irish, Maradona drug scandal, etc. The final was shyt but the tournament was great, as I remember it

Yeah, there were a lot of shocks (apart from Maradona being a coke-head) - I suspect the weather was a bit of a leveller and contributed to this.

All the stadiums have been built with air con systems in Qatar, pitch side will be a stable 21C for the the world cup games no matter what the weather is outside the stadium, but can the players do it on a hot day in Brighton.

      Play one:

      A) Aaronsen (sot)
      B) Saliba (LEI)
      C) Cucurella (TOT)

        A every time.

Definite starter unlike Cucurella, and Leicester attack is more than capable of scoring v Arsenal. Saliba is staying on my bench this week for sure and Aaronsen plays. Leeds attack is decent.

Managed to end up with 3 Liverpool, 3 City and 3 Arsenal. Not too worried about it but does make the game less interesting when only have players from about 4 teams.

      Mandy

      Cancelo | Walker | Gabriel

      Salah | Diaz | Martinelli | Aaronson

      Haaland | Darwin | Jesus

      Subs: Ward, Dunk, Williams, Andreas

Worried was the wrong word. Think the team will do fine it’s just that if you have players from only a few teams then all other PL games are a lot less interesting.

Think most teams will be heading that way until Wildcard to be honest. I'm currently on 3, 3 and 2 and Rashford to Odegaard is definitely in my thoughts to make it 3-3-3
