FPL Gameweek 2 review: How many matches will Darwin miss?

We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Liverpool v Crystal Palace in our Scout Notes summary.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-improving website, and our own Premium Members Area.

Darwin Nunez (9.1m) was shown a red card on his first start at Anfield and will now miss Liverpool’s next three Premier League matches.

The Uruguayan had racked up five goal attempts, three shots in the box and two big chances after 57 minutes, but needlessly retaliated after being shoved in the back by Joachim Andersen (£4.5m).

As a result, Darwin will miss the Reds’ Gameweek 3 trip to rivals Manchester United, as well as home matches against Bournemouth and Newcastle United in Gameweeks 4 and 5 respectively.

With Diogo Jota (£8.9m) also out with a hamstring injury and Roberto Firmino (£8.0m) absent on Monday as a precaution, Jurgen Klopp’s attacking resources are certainly stretched at the minute.

“Darwin knows he let his teammates down. I will talk to him. It was not a reaction we want to see. He knows he will be challenged in this way, centre-halves will do that, but it is not a reaction we want. But we will use the time productively. We will use the suspension for physical work to make him strong – not a punishment but to make him stronger.” – Jurgen Klopp on Darwin Nunez

“Not the start we wanted but two points is the least of our problems right now. It’s really tricky with injuries. We have to use next week to maybe bring one or two back, although I don’t know if that is possible. We have lost Darwin now as well, which does not help, but Bobby (Firmino) might be back, we will see.” – Jurgen Klopp

One player who did step up on the night was Luis Diaz (£8.0m), who opened his account for the season with a sublime equaliser from the edge of the box. The Colombian’s strike ensured he bagged maximum bonus, in what was a pleasing nine-point haul for his 19.6% ownership.

“Luis’s (Diaz) goal was unbelievable. He put in a super intense game and an incredible goal, of course we needed that. We had two other nice opportunities we were a bit unlucky with, but it’s a point. Not what we wanted before the game, but in the end, we will take it.” – Jurgen Klopp

Elsewhere, it was a frustrating night for owners of Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) and Andrew Robertson (£7.0m), both of whom blanked.

The Egyptian was deployed as a lone forward after the red card as Klopp shuffled his pack, and almost scored a late winner, but it was a below-par performance given his usual high standards.

Robertson, meanwhile, was replaced by Kostas Tsimikas (£4.5m) as part of a triple Liverpool change after 62 minutes, in one of his quieter nights going forward.

However, fellow full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) fared better, pushing into midfield after Darwin’s red card, and despite conceding still bagged a bonus point after producing a succession of crosses and created chances for his teammates.

Above: Trent Alexander-Arnold’s pass map (successful passes in green) v Crystal Palace in Gameweek 2

Rather surprisingly, Liverpool have now gone behind in their last six Premier League games dating back to April, and as a result, will be eager to get Joel Matip (£6.0m) back as soon as possible.

“Joel (Matip) will be two weeks. We will see with that. The week was crazy; I have experienced a lot of weeks but that was like we had a witch in the building. Honestly, like every day somebody else pulled out (of training) for the craziest reasons. In the end, Joey (Gomez) didn’t start. Nat (Phillips) did really well, I have to say, but Joey didn’t start because he only trained yesterday again. At the start of the week, (he had) a little issue. Bobby (Firmino) couldn’t make it. Hendo this morning, we got the information there was a little concern about something if he plays too long, so he didn’t play that long. That’s the situation. It was not too cool, but then the game we made of it I really liked it – I really liked the game. That’s how it is. We want to fight and I saw that a lot, and we played really good stuff. So, a lot of good performances and I liked it, but that’s it now. We drew, let’s carry on.” – Jurgen Klopp

Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) put Crystal Palace in front on the counter after getting in behind Liverpool’s defence.

At the time, it was Crystal Palace’s first shot of the game, but it was clearly a tactic Patrick Vieira and his team had worked on, which both Zaha and Eberechi Eze (£5.5m) touched on after the match.

“We knew it was going to be hard work and it was a case of taking our chances. We knew we would have to suffer but our plan was to soak it up and take chances, so I am happy with the point. They were pushing forward and I was looking for space in behind. It only takes one chance and I am glad I took it today. As soon as Eze played it through I had in my mind what I wanted to do. I didn’t want the goalkeeper to set himself so I just took it early. We are a good team and handling the big teams well, so I am very optimistic about this season, especially with the way we are playing.” – Wilfried Zaha

“We worked hard and could have nicked it in the end. It’s not easy to play your football here so to get a point is a good outcome for us. Liverpool play a high line, our aim was to get on the ball and open up space, get in behind – and it worked well for us today” – Eberechi Eze

In truth, Zaha should have netted a second too, when he fired his effort against the post and wide late on. However, the signs are good for the £7.0m midfielder, who takes on an Aston Villa side minus Diego Carlos (£5.0m) in Gameweek 3.

“I am really pleased. It is not an easy place to come and we defended well as a team. We were prepared to suffer and did. In our counter-attacks we were good. We needed a big team performance and we had it tonight. When we won the ball Wilf (Zaha) ran in behind and the timing of his run was really good. Wilf is a goalscorer. Today he could score more than one.” – Patrick Vieira

Liverpool XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Phillips (Gomez 63), van Dijk, Robertson (Tsimikas 63); Fabinho, Elliott (Carvalho 79), Milner (Henderson 63); Salah, Diaz, Darwin

Crystal Palace XI: Guaita; Clyne, Ward, Andersen, Guehi, Mitchell (Richards 79); Ayew (Edouard 63), Doucoure (Hughes 79), Schlupp (Olise 88), Eze (Milivojevic 79); Zaha

For a club which prides itself on shrewd decision making in the transfer market, how have Liverpool managed to accumulate such unreliable midfield options?

Fabinho - usually good but completely out of form for the past 6-12 months
Thiago - world class but available for about 20-25 games a season
    Henderson - washed
    Milner - washed
Keita - injury prone and Klopp doesn’t trust him, played 0 mins tonight
Elliott - very promising talent but unfair to rely on him at 19
    Ox - washed, always injured

Compare that to City who’s first choice midfield consists of Rodri, KDB and Gundogan / Bernardo and it’s night and day at the moment.

Klopp has to shoulder some of the blame, IMO. Can’t always blame FSG’s spending model.

    Thoughts welcome!

Nice one ice man. Cool headed analysis, spot on.

May as well develop Elliot now.

Jude Bellingham is the main of the solution

I was saying something similar back one page where I'd like to even see Liverpool pick up another top CB (or slot Phillips in with Gomez/Matip) and play a 3/5 at the back allowing Trent and Robbo to really get up the pitch and play right beside Diaz/ST/Salah without worrying about leaving themselves too exposed at the back, because let's be honest, the creativity doesn't come from their midfield.

It's a bit silly to compare that midfield to City's it's apples and oranges, their tactics are completely different.
With the exception of Thiago, they usually play with 3 enforcers. Ball winners that are creatively unremarkable but tidy passers with little creativity. They rely on a pacy front 3 with wingbacks supporting. Sometimes they're simply just a long ball team with talent, firing passes over the top for Salah or Mane to chase.

I think calling Henderson washed is harsh. That said, Milner should be nowhere near the starting XI so your point still stands

I thought he was awful personally. Agree about the injuries, but with Thiago and Keita being so injury prone he is going to get more minutes than he probably ought to

It's okay if we take a while to rebuild after Mane and having so many players out again. Elliot needs regular minutes. Jones too. If they're good enough though is another question. I think we need a top top mid but who is about. Jude is way too much $
I missed the game last night but watched Fulham and it was obvious Fabinho was poor, Hendo and Milner a little slow on the turn and out bench was weak.

City spent $1bn, Liverpool have to balance the books. Ox needs to go, Keita has been disappointing, Thiago was a bargain but you have to live with his injuries, Fabinho is epic, Henderson great, Jones and Elliot t coming through. I’m actually surprised we didn’t go get DeJong, but budgets are budgets.

We could spend it but we don't. Net spend is a joke. Like a Villa or Brighton in reality. Top four should be above but we got lucky with Klopp and getting bargains.

Pool does OK. They are only losing to MCI. Otherwise, they would be in Dynasty mode these days. Give credit to MCI and Pep with way more budget and spending have a fine, fine team.

On the flip side, nobody spends more than MU. Look were those boys are. How many coaches at MU in the last 4 years. Lost count.

Fo ra team that won 2 cups, lost the title by one point to City and lost the final in CL last year, those midfielders must be really bad...

If there is an issue, its not the offensive part of the play, its the issue that opened up when Wijnaldum left, we then lost a lot of pace in that midfield, and he also complemented the other around him in a very well manner because of the nature of his talent. A midfielder that is as quick as most wingers is a huge advantage, and thats what Liverpool lacks now.

Fabinho is great at what he does, as a 6. But he needs someone around him that are mobile, quick, agile, to sweep up the balls before he does, or resulting in him being able to close the opponents down as a result of them being tightly pressed by Gini. If the opponents gets his speed up, Fabinho is not as effective.
Hendo posesses a lot of qualities that are needed in midfield, but he also lacks pace, and when you then have Keita or Eliott and even Thiago in a trio, Liverpool gets more vulnerable in transitions, like we saw on the goal yesterday.

    Which team?

    A)
    Meslier
    James / TAA / Walker / Patterson
    Martinelli / Salah / DaSilva
    Haaland / Jesus / Kane

    B)
    Raya
    James / Walker / Cancelo / TAA
    Martinelli / Salah / KDB
    Toney / Jesus / Mitrovic.

B, but I just don’t like Mitrovic for some reason. Consider Welbeck or a 6.0 MID also (4-4-2).

    (A) Martinelli + Emerson Royale (that WB in spurs attack)

I've got mahrez to deal with and 2FT so I could go mahrez and Robbo to dias and Diaz, but seems a bit sideways so I'm thinking I might just go mahrez to gundo and save.

Just looked at mine, for some reason after "/channel" it's re-posted the entire URL. That's the issue. So just copy and re-paste after the "/channel/" where "https:" shows again. Hope this helps.

Correction again. YouTube recently updated their format so that it's now "youtube.com/c/XYZ" instead of "youtube.com/channel/XYZ" so FFS need to change it so that the URL shortcut doesn't prompt channel but instead prompts /c/.

Let me try a different format for mine.

So I've fixed mine, you need to use the original channel webpage handle (which is auto generated and looks like garbage, no customisation).

So FFS need to do one of two things.

Not make it prompt "https://youtube.com/channel/" prior to whatever we type in the box or they need to clarify that you need to use the original URL handle as you can tell from my profile. That being said, looking at my profile you wouldn't think to click on "UCfLyx82HS5J0mJM8t3ELuiw" as it doesn't look like a link but more like a virus! 😀

So rather than sweat out the rest of this season like I have the last two-three years. I'm just doing what I want this year with half a brain on doing well, hence why I've just WC'd on GW3.

You can still easily finish top 10K-50K remit. I always, ALWAYS start badly, spot the trends and get on my way.

I took -4 for Robbo & Archer to Cucu & Toney. Benched bailey and absorbing the soon-to-happen price drop.

If you just want to get rid of bailey, best options would be KDH or Jensen as i dont fancy Dasilva due to rotation risk.

6m here mate, I'm sick over it this morning here tbh. Guess we should just try to have fun with our teams this season eh!
I've just done Darwin + Saliba to Jesus + Perisic(C) for my first hit 🙂

I don't think it's that difficult to climb back up. It's a marathon as they say and truly it is.
Just going different for the sake of it won't work. Having said that Perisic (C) is a nice shout. But if he is benched it would lead you further down.

5.5m here and that's after a 1.4m green arrow this week 😎 that's only 63pts of top 10k though, so i don't think i'll throw in the towel just yet

i was down also after the week, but as 5.8 rank i see that i am 100 point behind the overall leader and most of them are playing chips all over the place. In reality i am 50 points or so behind where i should have been.
and those 50 points or so are due to combinations of players that turns on the wrong side, like picking Saka over Martinelli and in the process picking the wrong 5 million defender to cover Cancelo, or Robertson instead of Cancelo, which also have a knock on effect on choosing Robertson over Diaz and so on.

Got James and Martinelli today. Had Mount and Dalot before.

Son and Haaland were my captains.
Dalot Bailey binary digits.. add Mount and Robbo fail to it.

not sure tbh, looking at past seasons and previous games both Dasilva and Jensen have been playing all over the place, Damsgaard mostly plays LW but can play Cam like Jensen, Dasilva is mostly right side CM

I went Kulu. Definitely wouldn’t do Haaland to Son, Salah to Son is a bit sideways

Even getting kulu i also need to sell salah. Thats why thinking salah to son

I hear you. But I went Kulu/Diaz with the Salah funds, think it might be worth it over a straight swap. But if you don’t need an additional starter Son is definitely the stronger option

The template is just too strong to be broken atm. Guess it's better to just stick with it while waiting for the right moment to use your WC.

    1. lugs

not sure about that, all of the 8m/ish mids are template busters plus the likes of Zaha, Trossard and Toney who's still not highly owned, captaincy is key though, huge gains to be won or lost with the right call

      Quite like this team.
      Good differentials in Madders Toney.
