FPL

FPL team rankings: Expected goals vs fixture difficulty

With all 20 Premier League clubs having now played at least six fixtures, the underlying stats tables we pore over in the Premium Members Area of Fantasy Football Scout start to become that bit more reliable.

Six/seven matches is still a small sample size, granted, but already we are seeing some predictable patterns emerge: title-chasing Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are among the top five clubs for both expected goals (xG) and expected goals conceded (xGC), for instance, while newly promoted Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest languish in the bottom five for each.

Something to consider when studying these figures, however, is fixture difficulty.

Crystal Palace may be towards the wrong end of the table for xGC, for instance, but look at who they have played in the opening six Gameweeks:

With this in mind, we’ll take a quick look at how all 20 Premier League teams are doing on the expected goals front when compared to how ‘easy’ or ‘difficult’ their opening set of fixtures were.

Establishing Fixture Difficulty

What constitutes an easy/difficult fixture is hugely subjective, of course.

To establish some form of grading system, we have ranked teams by the following criteria:

  1. Average fixture difficulty rating (FDR) on the official FPL site, using the current ratings
  2. In the event of a tie, clubs are ranked according to who came highest on our very own Season Ticker, again using the current ratings

Why not just use the Season Ticker and the ‘sort by difficulty’ function for the whole thing? In short, the Gameweek 8 postponements. The six clubs who blanked in the Gameweek just gone have plummeted down the Season Ticker as a result of their non-involvement, even though in some cases (eg Liverpool, Chelsea), what went before could definitely be described as ‘favourable’.

While you may certainly quibble a place or two here and there (Brighton and Hove Albion probably ought to be higher than 10th, given that they encountered Manchester United and West Ham United at good times), the rankings at the very least provide us with a rough, at-a-glance guide when we’re trying to put the xG/xGC figures below into some context.

He's basically an FFS RMT merchant (which he actually was only a few years ago) with a YouTube channel. He was just in the right place at the right time when FPL Twitter kicked off, and was more engaging than the few others that were doing a similar thing in those early days. Fair play for doing so well out of it, but at the end if the day he actually offers nothing more in terms of FPL knowledge than any competent and engaged manager on here.

Cheap, with good fixtures, nailed, on pens and allows you to upgrade midfield. But if he fails to produce there is no other vaible option to replace him. Also his stats are rather underwhelming. I do not rate him personally, but I understand reason why people choosing him.

      1. FOO FIGHTER
        • 4 Years

It is pretty much a case of Bailey. Many had him in GW1 as a 3rd or 4th starting mid and blew up horribly and then stuck with him not being able to upgrade him and his value freefalling.

I won't be going anywhere near Solanke either. He may have a nice run of fixtures over the next four GW's but Bournemouth have no attacking stats to be up for consideration.

I’m in a bit of a conundrum. I have Gundo and was disappointed he didn’t play last GW.

Had planned to get Maddison in for him as part of a -4. However I know Gundo is the kind of player who’ll haul v United. Really want Maddison though.

    Keep Gundo?
    Take the hit?

      Tough one!

What is Gundo's ownership compared to Maddisons? If Gundo and Maddison both haul, which one will boost your rank most - probably Gundo I guess? But which one will hurt you the most - Maddison

Sounds like a reasonable move, but he's looked very good of late and I wouldn't be surprised if he does well at the weekend. If you need to remove Arsenal/City players for GW12 then it's understandable, just keep an eye on Mitrovic's injury situation tonight / in the next few days

No it’s not nonsense. I’m doing Jesus to Toney this week for his Bournemouth game. Plus I don’t want loads of city/arsenal players GW12. Plus Jesus is on 4 yellows. Plus he has spurs n Liverpool coming up. Happy to get him back though in a few weeks

Bottomed: I'm contemplating whether I should wildcard this week or save it? My fav wildcard draft only needs 4 changes to my current team.

WC Draft (with the current player I'd trade for in brackets)

    Sanchez, Ward
Trippier, James (TAA), Cancelo, Neco, Emerson (White)
Martinelli, L.Diaz, De Bruyne, Rashford, Andreas
    Haaland, Mitrovic (Jesus), Auba (Archer)

What do you think I should do to stay top of my mini league?
    A. Keep current team

Who will play up top for Newcastle? Isak and Wood out. Wilson still a doubt.

Other thing to not is they have only scored 8 goals so far. May this put pressure on their defence if they are short on attacking options for GW9. Fulham away not going to be easy.

    Ah Xgc

Log onto Understat and Palace are not 20th - rather 16th on Xga ahead of Forest, Fulham, Bournemouth and Leicester. Feels a bit more in line with eye test that one.

Also a fan of The other 14 twitter feed which gives you a breakdown of most every significant data for other 14 clubs match ups. One key takeaway there for me is the power of home advantage.

Aye, Palace are 15th for xGC overall and 18th for mins per xGC (have played one match fewer than 14 other teams) with Opta, via the Members Area. Fifth-best xGC in the league last season so I expect they'll climb the ranks now that the fixtures are about to turn.

fellow wildcarders what are your thoughts?

  11. TanN
    • 3 Years

Right. I think I've finally decided. I will WC this week. Current draft:

    Pope | Guaita
    Cancelo | Trippier | Saliba | Mee | Guehi
De Bruyne | Maddison | Zaha | Martinelli | Andreas
    Haaland | Mitrovic | Toney

1.0itb (allows me to get Jesus or Salah back if needed)

    My idea is to go for some low ownership players who have a good chance of returning;

Ward, Digne, Neco, L.Diaz, Jesus, Isak --> Guaita, Mee, Guehi, Maddison, Mitrovic, Toney
    25.9%, 2.3%, 27.2%, 26.5%, 71.7%, 7.7% --> 1.5%, 2.9%, 1.2%, 6.2%, 30.7%, 20.9%

Total ownership of players transferring out = 161.3% across 6 players = 26.88% average ownership
Total ownership of players transferring in = 63.4% across 6 players = 10.57% average ownership.

Seen as I am joint second in one ML and third in another, I hope these moves will boost my rank a little.

Feel like a glut of goals is coming at both ends, maybe something like 5-3 Leicester. Their defensive issues were almost enough to put me off Maddison but I still think he has great haul potential in 3 of the next 4.

Final wildcard decision is do i start with both Trent and Cancelo or downgrade 1 to allow the funds to have Zaha, i A which def goes?

    A, Cancelo or Trent
    or
    B, Zaha

    Haaland Mitro Solanke

I know I'm missing Trent and Cancelo but feel like there's an opportunity to go without them till gw 12.

Will get them both by gw 13 by downgrading Son/Maddison

Cancelo, KDB, Trent, Zaha, Toney all could hurt put if it pays off you could see a nice rise in rank

KDB would also be part of a threemium though. You can’t have them all.

Doesn't look too bad, but I think I'd rather downgrade Solanke to fodder & reinvest in defence rather than have 3mium with a flexible, expensive bench

Yeah I guess that would compel you to sell an extra Ars/City player. Just thought that benching a 4.5 defender or Solanke every week maybe isn't the ideal structure for a budget-stretched threemium

      Looks good to me overall
      Would prefer Kane over Son

Would get TAA/Cancelo with those funds

Magnus Carlsen willing to use his power in the game and ruin a chess players career based on zero evidence. The biggest cheating expert in the world has studied niemann and found nothing yet Carlsen going on things like he didn’t look stressed in this situation playing me etc??

Zero evidence? Not what I've read. He has admitted to cheating previously, and many of his moves are 100 % aligned with what a super computer would do. When Magnus plays at his best he's up to 78-79%. Also, I think Magnus knows chess that well he would know when something is off.

Reminds me of the coughing major in Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.

The host and organisers suspected that something was wrong based on his strange behaviour, but it wasn't till later that they were able to prove exactly how he was cheating.

Haha so your thinking he has strategically placed beads somewhere? Please. Online cheating is one thing, over the table another. What you have just laid out isn't evidence.

Is a known cheater Online and has been removed from chess.com. but over the table play there is nothing. Every game he has played has been poured over by foremost cheating expert in the world and zero evidence found. Carlsen having a hunch isn't evidence.

Nice team but 6 city/Arsenal with GW12 blank coming up. I know these are players you want 3 or 4 weeks before World Cup but you’re rank could suffer before then. And city Arsenal have tough fixtures. I’d personally WC

I wild carded early so I’m stuck with 5 city/Arsenal. I’m trannying out 1 per week starting with Jesus (4 yellows to Toney). I’ll keep haaland and I’ll bench saliba or Martinelli GW12.

cool.. i guess I could do 2FT next week with Jesus + Gabriel to Toney + defender.. would leave me with KDB, Marti and cancelo.. KDB can always become Salah..

              Or you could do Jesus to Toney this week if you think Toney can score more points vs Bournemouth than Jesus can vs spurs? Any plans to bring madddison in? His ownership is going to go through the roof! And zaha’s after Chelsea game. I still like your team though;

Not keen on wildcarding and having a fodder striker - especially when I need to think about the blank in gw12

Guehi is 4.3 - but don't want guehi and guatia. Can't seem a decent 4.5m keeper

Edging towards starting with toney - and then downgrading him to get trent further down the line....

I would say no. That’s basically my team save I have Sinister / Da Silva for your Gordon / Harrison.

My plan, for what’s it worth, is to dead end into 12 and WC GW13 to load up on Liv / City / Ars. You have 4 FT between now and then. Assume you will have value in Marty and Haaland so will keep and bench in GW12. So probably look to sell Jesus (maybe to Toney), Cancelo, KDB and one other (maybe to Zaha in 10) ahead of 12.

      My thinking anyway….

What’s your risk appetite? Martinelli still a great option & highly owned but does have a couple of tough games before a blank. Would rather Rashford over Sinisterra but he’s flagged. I say give Martinelli the Spurs game then move onto one of the aforementioned.

Very similar situation for me. I've concluded that it comes down to whether I think KDB or Maddison will score more highly this GW. I've got to transfer out at least one Man City player ahead of the blank, so it's a matter of 'when' rather than 'if'.

Yes, I’m leaning to that move as I think Maddison should score well next few GW’s, I’m even tempted to captain him vs Forest.
