FPL

The FPL half-term report: Wolverhampton Wanderers

All 20 Premier League clubs’ seasons so far are analysed in our Half-Term Report series as the countdown to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) restart continues.

FPL bosses will get unlimited transfers before Gameweek 17, so these articles will hopefully help you pinpoint some key targets for the Boxing Day resumption.

Here, we focus on bottom-of-the-table Wolverhampton Wanderers.

It’s not only our final piece of the series but, whisper it quietly, perhaps the least useful. All of the stats date from the Bruno Lage era, and he’s now been replaced by Julen Lopetegui at the helm.

You can read up on the new Wolves boss here, while we’ve got Scout Notes on all of their mid-season friendlies in our complete guide to the restart.

This piece will, at least, attempt to bring to light what Lopetegui has to deal with in his in-tray.

ATTACK: SEASON SO FAR

TotalRank v other clubs (adjusted per game)

Shots on target4818th=
Big chances1819th
Expected goals (xG)15.3417th
Non-penalty expected goals (NPxG)13.7618th

Top of the pile on the to-do list: the attack.

There’s no secret as to why Wolves are where they are in the Premier League table right now, sitting as they are rock bottom for goals scored.

On only one occasion did Lage’s erstwhile troops score more than one goal in a league match, that happening against Brighton in Gameweek 15.

They have the worst shot-to-goal conversion rate in the league (4.5%), no surprise perhaps when 74 of their 177 efforts have come from outside the area.

But even ‘big chance’ conversion is abysmal, at 29.4%.

The struggle for goals is nothing new, as any Wolves fan will tell you, and they ranked 17th and 16th for goals scored in the two seasons that preceded this one.

DEFENCE: SEASON SO FAR

TotalRank v other clubs (adjusted per game)
Goals conceded2413th
Clean sheets410th=
Shots conceded19813th
Shots in the box conceded13012th
Shots on target conceded639th
Big chances conceded245th=
Expected goals conceded (xGC)19.598th
Non-penalty expected goals conceded (NPxGC)18.018th

Wolves’ defence hasn’t been too bad this season, giving Lopetegui a base to start from.

The West Midlanders actually concede big chances at a lower rate than champions Manchester City, so they perform fairly well on the xGC front as a result:

Above: How Wolves compare to other Premier League sides for minutes per NPxGC across 2022/23 (click to expand)

Their defensive numbers have mostly improved across the board compared to 2021/22 – the difference this time being that Jose Sa (£5.0m) has turned from Lev Yashin into Lionel Perez:

Jose Sa’s expected goals prevented (xGP)
2022/23-4.90
2021/22+7.50

BIGGEST GOAL THREATS

First bench Perraud (BHA) or Patterson (WOL)?

I even considered Trossard VC. He's going to be the striker here, in Welbeck's absence

Anyone going without Spurs players? Only 2 ok fixtures in next 7 + fatigue of some players + injuries + fitness concerns...

I would like to have Kane, but his price killing me

      I dumped Salah for Kane

If Doc lines up on the right and Emerson is rightly dropped, I'll probably go White to Doc for GW18, then reverse in GW22

Oh, I've got Darwin instead. He's the main focus of the attack when he's through the middle, so I'll take that for now. Not expecting much, so I don't plan to cap him

    Merry Christmas everyone!

Finally getting around to making my team now, anyone considering Havertz over Darwin for a few weeks? Scored a hat-trick in last friendly and has Reece James deliveries again, will very likely start up front

Auba. That's the problem. I don't see Havertz starting consistently over Auba. And beyond that, Havertz hasn't proven himself to be a high-volume scorer at Chelsea

What to do here please? Lost on last page

Much of my squad looks like the same as a lot of others on here, but what should I do with the final few spots here?

    A) Kane, Cancelo, Summerville (benched)
    B) Kane, Walker, Martinelli
    C) Wilson/Mitro/Martial, Cancelo, Kulusevski
    D) Something else

C feels safest, A maybe most exciting

    Kepa Ward
Trippier ( —) Shaw White Bueno
KDB Rashford Almiron ( — )Andreas

Thanks and Merry Christmas/ happy holidays!

That's one interpretation of the quotes there, but it can be interpreted as only resting the finalists while complaining about the World Cup's effects on the others

He doesn't have anybody to start over Kane, for instance. Heck, Kulu is the only member of the frontline who isn't injured, once you remove Kane and Son

That is the headline the BBC have chosen tbf. And Conte doesn't single out the finalists. Kane will probably still start but I think we have to assume that he's not in great condition

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 5 Years

I get that, but I'm just saying Conte loves to complain. He complained about Kane being overflogged and then kept overflogging him. It's tiring 😀

I only take his definite statements as his actual plan, like benching Lloris and the Romero absence

    Keppa Ward
    James Trippier Walker Patterson Bueno
    Salah Bruno Mount Martinelli Andreas
    Haaland Darwin Martial

Thoughts? 0.9 in the bank, so Patterson or Bueno could be Ben White for example. Also, not sure is it better to go Rashford and Wilson over Mount and Martial, same price badically. Chelsea do have better fixtures (and a double) than Newcastle, but Rashford seems like a clear better option than Martial, so very close call.

He's one of the few options in that price range, so I've seen him discussed here alongside Martial, Wilson and Mitro (even with the flag). Those three seem to be preferred to him, maybe due to fixtures and the fact that we've seen their performances this season already

Just me who really doesn't live Liverpool or Nunez' fixtures? There are a lot of away games there.

Villa (A) - A Different prospect under Emery
Lei (H) - Can't take much into form pre World Cup, but Leicester did turn it around. 6 CS in their last 8
Bre (A) - 7 goals conceded at home, 3 of which were to Arsenal. Kept CS at home to both Utd and Chelsea
Bri (A) - We know Brighton are a good side now. They don't tend to concede many
Che (H) - Although they've been poor, they are still a big team with big players.
Wol (A) - Hard to know what Wolves will be like under the new manager. He does tend to keep things tight.
    Eve (H) - Derby game
New (A) - We know all about Newcastle at home this season
Cry (A) - Another tough away ground
Mun (H) - Derby game against an improving Utd side

That is the next 10. 6 away, 5 at home. They aren't futures that scream goals to me. This isn't to say Nunez won't tick over, but given the inconsistency in his finishing, do you expect him to haul in order to justify the extra 2m+ over players like Wilson, Mitrovic, Nketiah, Martial?

    I am not convinced.

B Would look like: Kepa (Ward)

    Almiron Martinelli Rashford Foden (Andreas)

    Haaland Kane Darwin

    C: Kepa (Ward)
