FPL new signings: Who is Chelsea midfielder Noni Madueke?

Not content with their collection of wingers and inside forwards, Chelsea have decided to splash out on Mykhailo Mudryk (£7.0m), Noni Madueke (£5.5m), David Datro Fofana (£5.0m) and the loan signing of Joao Felix (£7.5m) – with another week still left in this January transfer window.

Arriving from PSV Eindhoven, Madueke is another young English talent who chose to move abroad at a pivotal age and put faith in one of Europe’s elite academies.

A fee of around £30m has been paid to the Dutch side and Madueke has penned a seven-and-a-half-year contract.

So can the 20-year-old get enough game-time to boost Chelsea’s dwindling season and what impact will he have in FPL?

We’ll attempt to answer those questions below.

THE HISTORY

Chukwunonso Tristan Madueke was Barnet-born of Nigerian descent in March 2002. The 5 ft 9 in wonderkid spent time at the academies of Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur, before signing for PSV in 2018 to get a quicker pathway to senior football.

“Moving abroad when you are young, it takes a bit of heart. Other than that, it is no different. I have definitely seen another side of life and had to adapt. There was a culture shift. But I am someone who is easy-going and can live anywhere so it was not so difficult.”Noni Madueke to Sky Sports last April

Ajax aren’t the only Dutch club to regularly churn out superstars, with PSV Eindhoven recently producing the likes of Memphis Depay, Steven Bergwijn, Hirving Lozano and new Liverpool man Cody Gakpo (£7.9m).

2020/21 was Madueke’s reakthrough campaign, starting with four goals and three assists from the first seven league games. It ended with seven goals in just 956 minutes – a good rate – although some minor knocks limited Madueke to mostly substitute appearances for the remaining matches.

SeasonTeamDivisionStarts (subs)GoalsAssists
2022/23PSV EindhovenEredivisie2 (3)10
2021/22PSV EindhovenEredivisie11 (7)33
2020/21PSV EindhovenEredivisie7 (17)76

The subsequent season-and-a-half has also been hampered by muscle and ankle injuries, which could be of concern. He’s barely featured so far in 2022/23 and the Athletic report that he’s “missed 43 matches for PSV across all competitions over the last two campaigns”.

Nevertheless, he has no regrets about following Jadon Sancho (£7.1m), Jude Bellingham and Marcus Edwards abroad as an unknown English talent.

“I have been in a first-team environment since I was 17. I don’t think there is any way I would have experienced first-team football at that age in England. That is the main thing. From the moment I came here, I liked the aura straight away. It just felt like the right next step.” Madueke

And he’s seemingly committed to representing England at international level, rising through the under-16, under-17 and under-18 ranks to collect four under-21 caps so far.

PLAYING STYLE

According to WhoScored, Madueke is a left-footed right-winger whose style is more of an Antony (£7.3m) than a Hakim Ziyech (£5.5m).

He is skillful, fast and direct when dribbling near opposing full-backs. Working with Ruud van Nistelrooy helped improve his finishing, with Roger Schmidt fine-tuning his out-of-possession pressing work, to create a more polished player.

“I am a bit of a showman. I try to beat players. I am fast. I have an eye for goal. That is how I would describe myself. My biggest strengths are still my speed and my dribbling but I would say that my end product is good as well now.” – Madueke

WHERE MADUEKE FITS IN AT CHELSEA

Although Chelsea are known for loaning out their talents to a network of clubs, Madueke is likely to stay and compete with the aforementioned new wide players while Ziyech is thought to covet a move away and both Raheem Sterling (£9.7m) and Christian Pulisic (£5.7m) are injured.

Head coach Graham Potter is a fan of Madueke and suggests than an adjustment period is preferred to sending him elsewhere.

“He’s an exciting player, brings a left-footed attacking option for us and competition in that area of the pitch. He’s a young player who has had a good start in his career, accumulated games for a big club in Holland.

“He’s ready to take the next step and we need to help him adjust to life with us and to life in the Premier League, but again he is a player our supporters will like.” – Graham Potter

In fact, Chelsea could do with as much attacking help as possible right now. They are stuck in tenth place and have scored the fewest goals of all teams since Gameweek 12.

Using our Members Area stats, it can be seen that no side has a worse goal conversion rate than their 5.8 per cent.

IS MADUEKE WORTH BUYING IN FPL?

Potter needs new names to resurrect the Blues’ season and Madueke could be thrown in early due to such injuries. If he impresses enough to nail down a place, and it’s a big ‘if’ knowing Potter’s attitude towards rotation, the £5.5m price tag could tempt many into purchasing – especially those wanting to ditch Miguel Almiron (£5.8m) in the near future.

Our Season Ticker shows that Chelsea have the fourth-best set of fixtures over the next eight Gameweeks and the leading run of those without an imminent Double Gameweek.

Not only are they guaranteed to play in Gameweek 25 – when four teams won’t due to the Carabao Cup final – Potter and co are also nailed-on for big Blank Gameweek 28, as both they and Everton are already out of the FA Cup.

The transfer window closes before the next FPL deadline. If Chelsea decide to sell Ziyech and loan out Fofana, there could be a clear path for Madueke to make an immediate impact given the injuries elsewhere.

But eyes will probably be more likely on Mudryk for these good fixtures, and game-time certainly looks more assured for the Ukrainian for now.

    Morning All,

    Which is better?

A- KDB + Mitrovic > Bruno + Nketiah (bench Andreas)
B- KDB + Andreas > Bruno + Odegaard (bench Mitrovic)

Personally, Mitrovic is a bit like Digne for me: every time I have him, he does nothing/gets injured. I don't have him at the moment (so you're all safe to keep him), so my preference would be for A, but I would definitely wait for more news on his injury, unless being priced out is a concern.

So many unnecessary transfers being made before all the cup games have finished forcing price changes that can scupper planned moves. Drives me crazy. Its about time FPL put a block on transfers until a day before the gameweek deadline.

Thats part of the game.. There are those who want to take a risk to enjoy a price rise.. Many on this site bought Stones early just before he got injured.. Thats was fun to watch ! So they can't block transfers and remove a fun part of the game

It's a needless part of the game. If everyone just used common sense and waited until nearer the deadline, there would be no unnecessary price rises and everyone could relax.

To be honest this is a bit of a nonsensical comment. If transfers werent possible until a day before the deadline then prices don't change meaning no risk can or needs to be taken as you know you wont be priced out.

I dont see what is 'fun' about transfering in a player 2 weeks before their next league game and then seeing them get injured in a cup game. The whole price change system is an utter nonsence. I would like to see it got rid of completely so prices always stay the same.

I'm priced out on almost a weekly basis. All part of the challenge. Who on earth would want to make things less and less challenging? The whole point is making decisions. But listen, we will never ever agree on this. You want things simpler, I want things more complicated. It's who we are as men.

Gooberman - I'd like to see FPL be mor open and transparent with their price changes. We all use FPL statistics but those in their does season ( which will be every single year) won't have heard of it, because FPL don't advertise it in the rules. Perhaps if price change only happen once a week as opposed to everyday, and it was clearly advertised by FPL which day of week it was rising and falling, it might be fairer to all

I feel price changes are an integral part of the game. However, they can be incredibly frustrating - this week is a perfect example.

To me it's all about the decision making process - some we get right some we get wrong. Sometimes we might risk early transfers other times we wait.

We all have the same information available to us, so it's just about your individual decision making.

I feel it's needed in the game and hope it stays as it is

Absolutely agree with NOTLOB. Price changes are all part of the overall game. Some (myself included) play to increase T.V. (particularly early on) to enable a high value team later in the season. This may require additional transfers and early moves which can sometimes backfire.
Please leave well alone. We don need any more move to a further sanitised and template game.

I can tell you that chasing team value is a flawed and pointless strategy. Whilst in theory it makes sense its not necessary purely because there are always value players that emerge who match the higher priced players. The best FPL managers who get consistent high ranks and also those who actually win FPL dont achieve it through having a high team value in fact most have modest team values.

What are you on about? Not having to build team value over the season per say doesnt mean you cant be disadvantaged by being priced out of a player you want especially if at that time I dont like the other options.

You're not disadvantaged though. Everyone can make transfers at the same time. If you can't see other options or fear being priced out of the option that you're set on, then make the early transfer. Transfers and price fluctuations are part of the game. It's about risk and reward. Everyone has to deal with it and navigate it as best they can. Maybe just deal with it rather than bleating on about it.

Hi Gooberman. I feel I must disagree with you. All strategies are valid but some produce a more consistent result. I reckon my overall finishes are generally none too shabby. I have always tried to maintain a decent T.V. but even so often find myself being priced out of a transfer.

There can only be one winner, and this has more to do with enormous amounts of luck and correct 50:50 calls than worrying about T.V. values

There is simply no need to make transfers this early. Its always annoyed me and I would like to see these idiots prevented from being able to do it. I feel it would be a better and more enjoyable game either without price changes full stop or no transfers being allowed until a day before deadline.

I just think that the selling price should be the same as your purchase price for a player, so you don't have to worry about the assets you own. Then you only have to worry about the purchase prices of players you don't own, and ideally that would be transparent and once per gameweek. I believe this would solve your problem without babysitting FPL managers and stopping them from playing the game for 5 or 6 of the 7 days per week.

This would be the ideal solution in my eyes. The 'selling for half the profit' thing is off-putting for new players, especially when the logic behind price changes isn't publicised.

Yeah I think the majority of players probably don't know how price changes work, and none of us know how it works completely. I think this solution would also help fight the templatiness of FPL, as there would be less incentive to do the same as everyone else to benefit from price rises.

If that's how you feel, this game is not for you, mate. Price rise is an integral part of this game. Yes, it doesn't make sense to do early transfers this week. But that's part of the risk. Early transfers are high risk high reward. Building team value is one strategy that people can take in the game. Waiting for more information and playing it safe is another. Depending on various circumstances (including which half of the season we're in), one approach might be better than the other. It's part of the game. Just because you think that one approach is better all the time, or that people taking a different approach than you negatively affects you doesn't mean that that that approach needs to be banned. FPL doesn't revolve around you. It's a game for millions of people, not just for you.

    Akanji Shaw Trippier
    Rashford(c) KDB Martinelli Almiron

    Ward Andreas Tete Patterson

Any better options then these moves?

If United get the DGW B, if not depends on who you can bench Trossard for.

Just a heads-up. Given that video was likely shot at the Sunday match I suppose that timeline would bring us up to around GW25.

Not ideal timing given that's a BGW but let's hope they don't rush him too much...!

I don't suppose majority will take heed of something that's will only potentially affect a few GWs from (not should they with short term fixtures)... but all for keeping that ownership low!

I’m considering zinchenko as my arsenal defender of choice who I bring in,
The other 3 are really popular and with zinchenko playing cm, I quite like his assist potential tbh.

Key for me is whether that is starting in the first XI or starting first team training in 4-5 weeks. I guess we'll know soon because if it is starting/subbing in GW25 I would expect photos in full time first team training next week, and some clarity around just what is meant by see you on the pitch!
