We are entering what is unquestionably my favourite period of the FPL season. Last year’s Blank and Double Gameweek bonanza saw divergent chip strategies on Wildcard 26 vs Triple Captain 26, Bench Boost 28 vs Bench Boost 36 etc.

As we conclude the EFL Cup semi-finals and ingest the FA Cup fifth-round draw, we now know the probabilities of teams blanking in Gameweeks 25 and 28. At the time of writing, I have made the assumption that Newcastle United and Manchester United will contest the EFL Cup final, so the planning has well and truly begun.

I have opted to go team-by-team and assess what we need to be thinking about, as we try to optimise this interesting schedule.

Manchester City – Buy, then gradually sell by Gameweek 28

totAVL, arsnfobouNEWcryLIV, (WHU?)
DoubleAssuming they beat Bristol City in FA Cup R5Likely doubleAssuming they reach FA Cup semi

With Double Gameweek 20 recently concluded, most of us should already be decently stocked on Man City assets. Unless their name is Joao Cancelo (£7.1m) or John Stones (£5.4m), I see little reason to sell anyone ahead of their next double.

Thereafter, the champions have two very tasty away games but they sandwich the RB Leipzig away leg in the Champions League, so expect rotation. After Gameweek 25, their non-Erling Haaland (£12.2m) assets become more disposable as you’d expect them to beat Bristol City in the FA Cup fifth round and thus blank in Gameweek 28.

I can see the Kevin De Bruyne (£12.5m) to Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) move becoming popular, or perhaps moving a defender to a second Newcastle one.

Arsenal – Buy and hold long-term
GW22GW23GW24GW25GW26GW27GW28GW29GW32
eveBRE, MCIavlleiBOUfulCRYLEE, (EVE?)SOU
DoubleLikely doubleAssuming Southampton don’t reach FA Cup semi

If you aren’t tripled up on Arsenal assets, then please do so now and make sure you get the right ones. This is because Arsenal not only have a Double Gameweek on the horizon, they have a confirmed fixture in Blank Gameweek 28 and probably one during Blank 32.

For me, this justifies even a Ben White (£4.7m) or Gabriel Martinelli (£6.7m) upgrade if required. Get the right three and keep them there until a later Wildcard.

Manchester United – Buy now but start selling for Gameweek 25

Haaland Foden

Would you keep KDB or Kane?

    Thinking of...

    A. Martinelli > Bruno
    B. Kane > Nketiah (-4)

    or

    1. KDB > Bruno
    2. Mitro > Nketiah (-4)

    Then GW23, Bruno > Odegaard.

    Current Squad 1FT

    Kepa / Ward

    Trippier / Schar / Shaw / White / Bueno

    KDB / Rashford / Mahrez / Martinelli / Mitoma

    Kane / Haaland / Mitro

    Thanks

Sell. Hasn't played in ages and AWB has been pretty decent so he won't just walk back in. If he had started in the cup I might have revised my position but he hasn't so he's just a sell imo.

Best transfer to make with this squad? 1 ft and 1.6 in the bank

Almiron to Antony maybe? Will most likely become Ødegaard for GW23

    Ederson, Ward
    Trippier, Gabriel, Shaw, Bueno, Patterson
    KDB, Martinelli, Rashford, Almiron, Andreas
    Kane, Haaland, Mitrovic

Either Mitro to Nketiah then Martinelli to Odegaard next week OR KDB to Bruno and back to KDB next week.

I was contemplating moving Kane on for a few GW's. So I can have both KDB and Bruno for double game weeks.

This highlights the merits of getting DDG over Shaw as you must bench a keeper anyway. That would leave an extra slot in defence for a player who doesn't blank in 25.

Are these good moves to make most of DGWs?

This week: KDB and Mitro > Bruno and Gnonto
Next week: Almiron and Bruno > Odegaard and KDB

    For one hit overall.

    Rest of team looks like:

    Kepa
    Trip Shaw White
    KDB Mahrez Martinelli Rashford
    Haaland Kane Mitro

    Ward Almiron Botman Bueno

How about just KDB to Bruno then reverse it next week + Almiron to Odegaard? Basically not a fan of Mitro to Gnonto for a hit

Those are basically the moves I like but I need some money to get there. 0.2itb so can't do Almiron to Ode without a downgrade

Prefer KDB, Almiron > Bruno, Odegaard this week,
Then Bruno, Mitro > KDB, Gnonto next

But this misses Gnonto's double so wouldn't be sure about buying him at that point...

Not really paying too much attention to deadline day, but Cancelo has done one I see... I would dearly love to know what went on there. He was 1st on the sheet last season, and now ... something happened at the WC. Has to be.

    Anyway, that's another transfer headache.

It was a couple of mistakes (for Liverpool's goal + causing the Fulham penalty) leading up to the World Cup then subsequent drop to the bench. Joao clearly didn't take it lightly & threw fits

Yeah interestingly he lost his place in the Portugal team too. Very odd for a player who was seen by most as world class a few months ago

I thought I was being so clever going Ederson to cover Cancelo on GW17 wildcard, could have got really lucky with the benching/cameo situation but in that time City kept 2 CS in 7 so it didn't really help at all 😐

Could be a number of things.

Having to defend his family from armed robbers could have had an effect on him and his family.

Could also be the change of system with the arrival of Haaland. Although he's been poor for Portugal too, losing his place to Dalot...

Saying he's happy with his current midfield options was probably a negation tactic, as well as keeping his squad happy. If you come off as desperate the selling club will be more demanding.

So? His value and potential would be tanked by a signing like Sabitzer and you'd be paying two wages for essentially the same role/solution. It would be poor management from a footballing and business perspective. Besides, I think most Arsenal fans would disagree with your assessment of Vieira

    1. "We have some issues. I think tomorrow [Wednesday] that Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho will return in the [matchday] squad.

    2. "I think they are a really good combination, Casemiro and Fred."

    3. "...I think also the next game [Palace] he [McTominay] will be absent. We must see how that process will go."

    4. "You see him growing game by game. I'm happy. What was [good] in the last games - the connection between Aaron and Antony was much better. Then you see more difficulties for the opponent."

No info on Shaw or Dalot

If the two United's (Manchester and Newcastle) make the EFL Final you've got 5 players who will blank in GW25, so that's 2 of your next 3 FTs tied up if you want to field a full 11 in GW25. You are also likely to encounter plenty of benching headaches in the weeks to come.

      1. boombaba
        • 11 Years
        1 year, 3 months ago

I thought of that but can’t see me making much changes other than avoiding the blanks to field 11 or swap out an injured/suspended player.
Having the bench headache is good in a way for the blanks GWs because I will have good options to play and not fodder

Any further clarity/insights/theories on who has penalty duties for Man U now? I am considering TC chip for this week and could go either Bruno or Rashy based on this. Thanks.

Who to TC?... Bruno, Rashford or Antony. Thinking Antony just because no one else will. But I captained Bruno when everyone else captained Haaland GW20 and he sorted me right out! Rashford is the obvious choice.

No way Antony. Other 2, Yes, but both could be outdone by Haaland the following week.

Yes waste your TC on a player who no longer plays in the P.L

Did you think this would sound even remotely funny?

Awe cute. Wish I was a basic plebiscite too. I'd love to be unaware of the world I live in.

Good day to you and your cognitive dissonance as well.

Nice assumption that I'm a male. Basic as I said.

You brought up old news so you got it back.

I responded with a football related comment

Anyone else hesitant about triple capping Rashford?

I'm not hesitant, I'm adamantly not doing it.

I'll captain Rashford and barely lose anything on you who is using the TC (unless he hits two hat tricks).
