Is Bruno Fernandes back to his best in FPL?

Bruno Fernandes (£9.9m) is top of many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers’ shopping lists ahead of Gameweek 22.

The Manchester United midfielder has been the subject of more transfers in than any other player ahead of next Friday’s deadline.

It’s not just his recent form – 36 points in his last five appearances – that is appealing to FPL bosses but also the strong possibility of Gameweek 22 being a ‘double’ for the Red Devils.

With his stock on the rise, we take a look at his current output to see how it compares to his historic record, including his outstanding 2020/21 campaign.

Note: For the rolling six-game images below, click to expand into a new window.

SHOTS

For much of Erik ten Hag’s tenure, Fernandes has been below average for goal attempts compared to his historic average at Manchester United.

But the slump started long before the Dutchman’s arrival and, adding fuel to this particular argument, seemed to coincide with the capture of (the some would say ball-greedy) Cristiano Ronaldo in late August 2021.

Fernandes’ rolling six-game goal attempts tally tumbled from its apex to its absolute nadir within two months of Ronaldo’s arrival and never really recovered in 2021/22, save for a stat-boosting Gameweek 27 appearance against Championship-bound Watford when the midfielder racked up an anomalous eight shots.

SHOTS IN THE BOX

Fernandes’ rate of shots in the box hit an all-time low in Gameweek 14 of the current campaign, with just two such efforts arriving in six matches. That six-game period did feature fixtures against Manchester City, Newcastle United, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, in mitigation.

We’ve seen a bit of a recovery since the World Cup (and Ronaldo’s departure) but only to somewhere around his historic Premier League mean.

BIG CHANCES

For the uninitiated, a ‘big chance’ is – according to data compilers Opta – “a situation where a player should reasonably be expected to score”.

One such situation is a penalty, and there’s a definite split in the above graphic when Fernandes ceased to have the monopoly on spot-kicks at United:

SeasonPenalties Taken
2019/20 (half-season)4
2020/2110
2021/222
2022/23 (half-season)0

The Portugal international has missed his last two Premier League penalties, both taken in 2021/22, and hasn’t been trusted from 12 yards for United in any competition since.

Over a third (34.8%) of Fernandes’ big chances in his United career have come from the penalty spot.

Taking a closer look at this season, Fernandes has had just one big chance (his contentious ‘offside’ goal in the Manchester derby) in his last 13 appearances.

These gilt-edged opportunities do matter, despite his ability to shoot from distance: 60% of his 40 Premier League goals have been classed as ‘big chances’, while 82.5% of his goals have been from shots in the box.

        Keep it simple - 22 KDB -> Bruno then roll transfer 23 - Bruno/Almiron -> KDB, Mitoma
No need to get rid of White with DGW coming and peronsally think Nketiah wont do much in DGW

    Kepa (ward)

Tough to say. Martial and Rashford have both been off the field when the other has scored from the spot this season (Fernandes was on the pitch for both). Martial also scored in the mid-season friendly against Cadiz but again, Rashford wasn't present. It might be like the past situation where whoever is 'feeling it' (or wins it) gets to take it but ten Hag strikes me as more of a no-nonsense disciplinarian type who doesn't go in for that kind of a free-for-all.

Most getting him won't be keeping that long. KDB to Bruno then back to KDB or Mahrez for DGW23 is a popular option on here.

This article actually tempts me to skip Bruno and accept his hauls that I'll miss in GWs 22 to 24, while Saka comes in for Salah now as an easy hold until around GW32. This will spare me a few transfers, especially if Man City beats Arsenal tonight and unlocks BGW28 for Arsenal. Great fixtures too, with pens and another DGW soon that involves Everton, hopefully on BB29

        1. Sandy Ravage
          • 8 Years

Pulled the trigger on getting Bruno early, which has locked me out of getting Saka without a hit, so now getting Nketiah and hoping for some differential jam.

            • 5 Years

Nketiah is definitely a solid option atm. Arsenal's main threat

I've got Toney in that spot, and I think he'll become Darwin as my Liverpool representative for BGW25

      2. DavvaMC

I have been thinking his for days now, was not overly cnfident about bringing in Bruno, and still need to bring in Nketiah and Odegaard. So will probably go KDB > Odegaard for GW22 and leave Rashford and Shaw as my doublers.

    Pope Meslier
    Estupinan RJames Perisic Trippier TAA
    Mitoma Mahrez Rashford Saka Mudryk
    Darwin Haaland Gnonto

Alex Moreno is more exciting than Perisic atm, I think

Raya over Meslier because of the gulf between them this season

Agree with the rest. Maybe Robbo over Trent because he ends up in the box more often

      1. Eze Really?

Closest I can think of is United pulling out of the 2000 deal to sign Van Nistelrooy from PSV when they wanted to have extra tests on his near. Obviously they still ended up signing him the following summer.

It's usually seen as bad form for the buying club to disclose it. I think it's generally reported that the player changed their mind. I remember back in the day, John Salako failed one for Newcastle and it was seen as off that it had gotten out. Maybe Demba Ba, I recall he didn't join another club before he went to Newcastle due to concerns about his knees.

I think clubs usually do their due diligence as much as they can before agreeing a fee, for example looking at a player's appearance record and known injury history.

A was my initial plan, but feel a bit unsure at the moment

    A) Mitoma -> Bruno
    B) White -> Alex Moreno (Rodrigo -> Saka next week)
    C) Save FT
    D) Sant other suggestion

    Meslier*
    Shaw* Trippier Zinchenko
    Rashford* Rodrigo* Odegaard Mitoma
    Gnonto* Haaland Kane

    Bench Boost activated
    (Ederson Mahrez Schär White)

    1FT, 6.2 ITB

Any ideas? Wondering if a hit is worth it

    Kepa (ward)
    Cancelo, Shaw, Trippier (castagne, bueno)
    Rashford, KDB, Odegaard, Saka, Andreas
    Wilson, Haaland (mitrovic)

    A) Cancelo + KDB --- Bruno + Gabriel (no hit)
    B) Andreas + Wilson + Cancelo --- Bruno + Gnonto + White (-4)
    C) Andreas + Mitrovic + Cancelo --- Bruno + Ferguson + Zinchenko (-4)

Seeing people selling KDB for hits, not going to end well

KDB may not start against Spurs if Pep prefers Alvarez against a back 5 and Bruno likely to double

    2 FT, 0 ITB.

    Ederson
    Trippier, Schar, Shaw
    KDB, Rashford, Martinelli, Almiron
    Haaland, Kane, Toney

    (Ward, Gabriel, Andreas, Bueno)

Thinking standard KDB -> Fernandes this week and then getting in Saka/Nketiah and Mahrez/KDB in next week?

    Cheers

If you still had Cancelo, would you swap him for Martinez / Varane, or KDB to Bruno?

I can bench Cancelo for White is I keep him.

After these Cup games and before the deadline, how many of the DGWs/BGWs will be certain and announced immediately and how many will we have to wait for and how long? i.e. how many are certainties (based on the Cup game outcomes) and how many are estimates owing to scheduling etc?

You'll have to wait for tomorrow when Leeds and Utd play. If either game ends a draw there will be no dgw.

Thanks! I get that, I just mean there is a BGW GW25 and another DGW GW29. Will these be guarantees if the outcomes of the Cup matches align with the stars?

Ahh.. misread. Don't know about future blanks and dgws...

Who blanks at the weekend of GW25 will be known, and who doubles in GW22 should be know before the next GW deadline. Who doubles in GW25 & GW29 could be known, but who blanks in GW28 won't be.

Who doubles in GW22 is only a should be because if Leeds requires a cup replay and United don't, there is a chance that Brentford could DGW22 instead of Leeds but if that happens it should be announced before the GW deadline.

Thanks a lot. Really helpful! What are the doubles in 25 (didn't know about this - thought it was just a potential blank) and 29 dependent on?

Its the midweek of the FA Cup 5th Round so teams that have been knocked out of the FA Cup can DGW then.

Ok, who’s going T/C on Rashford for his double? Great upside if it comes off rather than T/C Haaland for his double which is a tad boring also 🙂

Has anyone figured out the best time to use the Wildcard, free hit and BB?

Feel like I'm heading towards dead ending to bgw28.

Hitting a gw29 Wildcard with loads of doublers.

And free hit for the blank in 32.

But I really don't have a clue!! Thanks

All depends on who blanks and doubles when but I'm fine for GW25. So I'm currently thinking FH28 and use FTs before that to build for DGW29, then dead end that team into GW32 blank. WC33 to set up for DGW34 BB and DGW37.

Your plan sounds OK as well. I take it that you would BB DGW34 or DGW37, if so its quite a big gap between setting up to BB with WC and using that chip (5 of 8 weeks) during which your players could lose form, get injured etc.

FWIW, I'm thinking of WC28 maybe to setup BB29, but it will depend on how BGW28 shapes up

You have to play 2 or 3 of the main team, like Gabriel is also starting. But Saka/Partey and Nketiah as of recently are so important for us, an injury for them would derail our season completely. They don't need to play today, so i'm surprised why they're starting
