Chip Strategy

FPL Gameweek 26 Wildcard: The pros and cons

It seems like every week that there’s a rethinking of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) chip strategy or an article devoted to it.

And Gameweek 26 is much the same!

The difference this time is that there are fewer unknowns in the FPL landscape with Blank Gameweek 28 completed and the doubles in Gameweek 29 announced.

One strategy that is gaining traction is a Gameweek 26 Wildcard.

Here we outline the pros and cons of using the chip before Saturday’s deadline.

GAMEWEEK 26 WILDCARD: THE REASONING

Wildcarding now allows FPL managers to negotiate Double Gameweek 27, Blank Gameweek 28 and Double Gameweek 29 in one fell swoop, without missing out on too much.

The chip might be used in conjunction with a Bench Boost – if available – in Gameweek 29, leaving any remaining Free Hit to be deployed in Blank Gameweek 32, Double Gameweek 34 or Double Gameweek 37.

GAMEWEEK 26 WILDCARD: THE PROS

GETTING ON BRIGHTON AND BRENTFORD PLAYERS
FPL Gameweek 21: Saturday’s goals, assists, bonus points + statistics 5

With a tough-to-navigate Blank/Double Gameweek 25 behind us, not many Fantasy managers will be well-stocked with players from Brighton and Hove Albion and Brentford.

Those two sides, plus the less-fancied Crystal Palace and Southampton, ‘double’ in Gameweek 27.

In fact, the average manager in the top 10k has just 0.7 Brighton/Brentford players in their squad after Gameweek 25:

The Seagulls and the Bees also have decent fixtures in Gameweek 26, against West Ham United and Fulham respectively (both at home).

Brentford players could then be played in Gameweek 28 against Leicester City, with Brighton assets benched for their blank. Both clubs double again in Gameweek 29, while the Seagulls could have as many as three further Double Gameweeks still to come (as well as a likely Blank Gameweek 32).

DUMPING/REDUCING LIVERPOOL

Any FPL manager who doubled/tripled up on Liverpool for Double Gameweek 25 faces the prospect of their players now taking on Manchester United in Gameweek 26, blanking in Gameweek 28, doubling away at Manchester City and Chelsea in Gameweek 29, and finally facing league leaders Arsenal in Gameweek 30.

Budget-sapping picks like Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.3m), Darwin Nunez (£8.8m) and Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) can be offloaded, then, in one fell swoop with a Gameweek 26 Wildcard.

Current wildcard draft, need some advice has my mind is boggled.

    Raya Ward
    Zinch Estupinan Shaw Tripp Lewis
    Bruno Martinelli Saka Rash Mitoma
    Haaland Kane Toney

Unsure on that Bruno position and whether or not I’ve spent too much on squad depth. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The main issue I can see there is that you’ve got seven, most likely eight players, who won’t play in GW28. I’m planning to bring Bruno back for the double in 29 for example

That’s what I was thinking in regards to that Bruno spot, who would you reccomend for the stop gap? Can’t find value in anyone

      Very good except Lewis.
Watkins represents better value than Kane at the moment.

Time to move on from Nketiah if correct.

"I got the news quite early so it’s always subject to change.

But apparently it’s same team as Saturday for Arsenal, so looks like no Nketiah."

I assume the QF draw will take place today after the games, but I'm stuck working for the next 4-5 hours, so here's a quick thought on the draw and GW32:
    Games which could be postponed:
    ARS-SOU
BOU-WHM OR MUN-CHE (based on who wins today)
    BHA-MCI
    FUL-LEE
    NEW-TOT

If you want minimum chaos in 32, there are two, possibly three, main things to hope for in the draw:
    1) Brighton and Man City get easy draws (ideally, the 2 remaining lower league teams). This reduces the number of postponed games as they play each other
    2) Assuming Southampton win, they get a tough draw (so the Arsenal game goes on)
    3) If West Ham beat Man United, they get a tough draw (since they play Bournemouth)

For maximum chaos, you want Man City and Brighton to draw each other, and Southampton (and probably Spurs) to get the easy draws.

Obviously, que sera, sera, but interesting to speculate at least.

Trying to ignore social media pressure to WC26 but I am tempted indeed. Does the below team warrant WC26/27 or I should just survive using hits?

    Kepa // Ward
Trippier Shaw Gabriel Ake // Bueno
Salah Martinelli Saka Rashy // Andreas
    Haaland Kane // Gnoto

    GW26: Ake -> Henry
    DGW 27: Bueno + Andreas -> Estu + Mitoma for -4 [total 3 doublers]
    BGW28: Salah -> Maddison [total 8 players]
    DGW29: Martinelli -> Bruno [total 11 doublers]

    A) WC26/27
    B) Stick to the above plan

Nketiah has been as big of, if not more of a let-down than Darwin.

Yes he's cheaper, however having him means you don't have a other Arsenal player who probably did score better points.

Less points blockage with the a Liverpool lot this year.

After an illuminating reply from The Mentaculus here, I've decided to WC now or 27, then BB 29, TC 34, FH 37.

Would you WC the former to the latter this week?

Now, with £0.2 in the bank:
    Ramsdale / Ward
TAA, Trippier, Burn / Castagne, Kilman
    Salah, Saka, Rashford, Ødegaard, Mitoma
    Haaland, Kane / Greenwood

To this, £2.7 in the bank:
    Raya / Ward
Trippier, Gabriel, Mee / Estupiñán, Burn
Saka, Ødegaard, Maddison, Rashford / Mitoma
    Haaland, Kane, Watkins

    1. WVA
      • 7 Years

I think Toney will comfortably outscore Kane over the next few game weeks. I would hold fire on Maddison and see if he can actually play some decent minutes. So my answer is no I would not WC this week.

Still undecided on WC26 strategies vs WC33 strategies, lots of good arguments being presented for WC26 recently, but I don't know as much about the reasons for a WC33. Who is expected to double in 34? What does it depend on and why is saving the chips for later better?

Team dependant. Do you own BHA, BRE snd LEI assets? Then save. If you don’t, coupled with other fires such as Nketiah, MCI def, Patterson -> Go for it.

Team below. I know that 26 has potential as a strategy. I guess I am asking what the argument is for saving as I don't know any of the details of GW34 double. Is it due to be better than 29? What other benefits are there to saving the chips for beyond 29?

The potentially good thing (for Everton) is Keane starts over Coady. Coady had a mare last match (common 'can't play well in a back four' complaints). Although that's not to say Keane doesn't have his moments.

Captain Nketiah benched again for christ sake! Arteta literally never changes the starting 11. The minute I move captain from Haaland to Nketiah for a double week, he's benched for both games. Unbelievable.

Very happy I left a perfect amount ITB to do Nketiah > Toney for the upcoming week.

(Watch Nketiah finally score vs. BOU).

    Would you do Salah > Odegaard/Trossard/Maddison for a -4? 😮

I can WC next week if following the crowd. Don't actually need to WC this week.
