FPL notes: Rashford absent, Mbeumo superb, Kane’s record

Manchester City’s Premier League title win and Nottingham Forest’s top-flight survival were the Premier League headlines of the day but our Scout Notes articles concentrate on the main Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points.

In this piece, the focus is on Forest v Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur v Brentford and Bournemouth v Manchester United.

All the key numbers from Saturday, from bonus points to expected goals (xG), can be found here.

NO RASHFORD – AND NO UPDATE

There was no Marcus Rashford (£7.2m) in the Manchester United squad to face Bournemouth on Saturday, the illness that was reported in Erik ten Hag’s pre-match presser evidently serious enough to keep him out of action.

We didn’t get an update on the attacker from ten Hag after full-time on the south coast, interviews with MUTV, Sky Sports and Match of the Day and the post-match presser failing to bring about any fresh information.

There is at least a generous recovery period with the Chelsea game not until Thursday, so there is still a good chance that he’ll make a belated Gameweek 37 appearance.

Ten Hag will face the media again in midweek ahead of that match, so we should get a heads-up on Rashford’s availability.

UNITED’S GOAL STRUGGLES

The Red Devils ground out a narrow 1-0 win over their hosts, putting the ball in the net proving to again be a bit of a problem: ten Hag’s troops have scored fewer goals than any other Premier League team over their last dozen games.

Above: Teams sorted by fewest Premier League goals scored from Gameweek 26 onwards

“That is, I think, a symbol from this season. We are not scoring so easily. Nevertheless, we have scored over 100 goals during the season. That’s a lot. Also, we played a lot of games, sometimes the freshness [isn’t there].

“That is one of the things we have to improve, to score more easily, as that makes life easy, because now we have to fight until the end [of games]. If we didn’t have that great goalie, you get the equaliser.” – Erik ten Hag

A new striker or two is surely a must this summer, while Bruno Fernandes (£9.5m) and Antony (£7.3m) had another seven attempts between them without success: their shot-to-goal conversion rates this season are a dismal 6.9% and 5.6% respectively, two of the three worst percentages among £7.0m+ FPL midfielders. Fernandes did go close here, admittedly, a stinging volley bringing a fine stop out of Murara Neto (£4.5m).

It was left to Casemiro (£4.9m) to settle matters, the midfield anchor netting only his third goal of the campaign.

The good news is that all was well at the back once again, United ensuring that they will finish 2022/23 on more clean sheets than any other team. Bonus machine Luke Shaw (£5.2m) secured another nine-point haul, his owners getting a brief scare ahead of kick-off when he pulled out of the warm-up.

And if we’re continuing to look at the positives, Liverpool’s late equaliser against Aston Villa ensures that United still have plenty to play for on Thursday and should cement starts for the big guns as ten Hag seeks to mathematically ensure Champions League qualification.

“It’s a final on Thursday and I hope all the fans are ready for it because we want to to get that done on Thursday. We therefore need another good performance and that will not be easy. You have to be ready, you have to be on the front foot, you have to be at the highest energy levels. You need to focus. And then it’s possible. We know that we are strong, especially at Old Trafford.” – Erik ten Hag

Bournemouth players aren’t likely to be big FPL targets for the final day, their role being supporting acts in the relegation dogfight. Gary O’Neil also ran wild with the changes (a real turn-off for Fantasy managers), making five in total, but there was plenty of heart on show here to suggest that Everton won’t have it easy.

“In comparison to Crystal Palace, light years apart. I thought it was a very competitive game. I didn’t think there was much in it. I thought our chances were probably equally as good as theirs. They managed to take one, we didn’t. It ends up 1-0, but I don’t think anyone could’ve complained if Kieffer Moore would’ve taken his chance at the end and the game finishes 1-1, I think it would’ve been a fair scoreline.” – Gary O’Neil

A CLOUD OVER NORTH LONDON

Arsenal’s defeat to Nottingham Forest just brought forward an inevitable Manchester City coronation by 24 hours, while north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur slipped to eighth when losing to Brentford and are in danger of going into 2023/24 without any European football to offer.

Players from both clubs ought to be key Fantasy targets for Gameweek 38, with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leeds United providing favourable opposition, but prospective and existing owners of anyone other than Harry Kane (£11.4m) will surely be having second thoughts now.

Spurs were actually very good in the first half against the Bees, Kane’s stunning free-kick goal and Ryan Mason’s switch to a 4-2-3-1 ensuring a deserved half-time advantage. Arnaut Danjuma (£6.1m), Dejan Kulusevski (£7.8m) and Son Heung-min (£11.5m) got some early joy playing off and often ahead of Kane, with good chances for Son (twice), Danjuma and Emerson Royal (£4.8m) instilling some optimism.

Mason deserves some credit for a bit of tactical innovation after the stubborn Antonio Conte days, at first getting joy in his 3-4-3/4-4-2 hybrid and then today in the 4-2-3-1. But once the opposition has worked out a way to combat the novel approaches, as Aston Villa did last week and Brentford did in the second half of this game, there doesn’t seem to be much left in response.

The concern is that a fighting Leeds side roused by Sam Allardyce won’t be the pushovers they were under Javi Gracia, although if the Whites need to push for all three points at any stage to give themselves a chance at survival, there is still the prospect of Son and co getting plenty of space on the break.

Arsenal meanwhile have Julen Lopetegui’s poor travellers to come but whether they can muster any strength to put on a show at the Emirates is another question, as there was a real defeated whiff about their performance at Forest.

An expected goals (xG) tally of 0.64, the second-lowest in the Premier League on Saturday, underscored the lack of attacking thrust, while Mikel Arteta’s bizarre decision to have Thomas Partey (£4.7m) ‘inverting’ from right-back seemed like the tactical equivalent of the Arsenal boss giving up and walking into Boots.

“Today is just sadness, you see a lot of people who have put so much work, so much belief and so many hours and I am sad for them because I wanted to find a way. We wanted to squeeze everything that we had out of that group and find alternatives and ways to reach certain levels, and when we don’t we try in other ways. We fell short and it is my job and my responsibility and I have to analyse that and think.” – Mikel Arteta

KANE HITS NEW HIGHS

Kane’s goal against Brentford took him to a new personal best for FPL points in a single season, while he’ll need a brace against Leeds on the final day to take him to 30 Premier League goals for the first time in his career.

It’s an even more impressive achievement given that he’s done this in a bang-average team under mismanagement, while the fact that he’s now cheaper than his starting price of £11.5m is a by-product of Erling Haaland‘s (£12.4m) superhuman heroics and Spurs having no Double Gameweeks in the run-in.

Kane now has 44 goals in his last 61 Premier League appearances.

MBEUMO EMERGING FROM TONEY’S SHADOW

Enjoyers of our Big Numbers article may have read about Bryan Mbeumo‘s (£5.6m) successes whenever Ivan Toney (£7.2m) hasn’t been in the Brentford side, something that continued on Saturday.

The now-banned Toney has only missed four of the Bees’ league fixtures this season but Mbeumo has scored in all of them, five of the nine goals he has plundered in 2022/23 coming in those four matches.

The underlying numbers have been strong in Toney’s absence, too, and they were again noteworthy in north London: Mbeumo has had more efforts than anyone else in Gameweek 37 so far.

Mbeumo will be on the ‘third forward’ radar for the first half of next season, especially if he’s still deputising on penalties.

Yoane Wissa (£5.3m) also chipped in with a double-digit haul, and it was interesting to hear BT Sports studio guest Pontus Jansson (£4.2m) describe Wissa as the best finisher at the club – Toney included. We could have some bargain attackers on our hands from Thomas Frank’s troops.

FOREST SAFE

Forest’s survival ensures that Gameweek 38 will be a more relaxed affair away at Crystal Palace; a good job, considering that Steve Cooper’s side have been mostly dreadful on the road.

Morgan Gibbs-White (£5.5m) and Taiwo Awoniyi (£5.6m) combined for the winner against Arsenal, the pair registering 13 attacking returns between them over the last six Gameweeks. No-one is ‘overachieving’ on the xGI front more than Awoniyi in that time, it should be said.

But the last six Gameweeks, even on the road, have seen Forest at their best. Cooper being able to call on a largely settled starting XI has surely been a big factor after a preposterously bad run of luck on the injury front in 2022/23, so there’s every reason to expect the Garibaldi to kick on next season and aim for the lofty heights of mid-table – perhaps even providing us FPL managers with more targets in the process.

Anyone considering Firmino for next weekend, given it'll be his last ever game for the club?

Went with the sentimental pick of David Silva in 2020 and got burnt... probably not. There are worse shouts, though: Firmino's goal record is actually decent this year for the minutes he's had, plus Soton are utter dross and there's more chance of a start if the shot at a UCL spot has gone by Thursday night.

Reliant on United getting a point on Thursday. Wait and see. I doubt he’ll start though.

I've got a draft with him in it. I'll wait until just before deadline if any team leaks. It's last game of the season so maybe time to have some fun, and he's probably one of the more "fun" pics

This GW38 might be the most anti-climactic one we've had in years.

The title race is decided. Top 4 is pretty much decided. Relegation battle could be close but also could be more or less decided if Leeds and Leicester lose tmrw.

So what is there even to play for? 6th and 7th place?

What's more, our teams are all full of United and City players because of DGW37 who are both incentivized to rest all their key players ahead of the FA cup final.

It looks like it could be wild -4s across the board and last minute frenzied team leak searches for a good captain choice.

Teams get more prize money the higher up they finish and some contract bonuses are specifically tied final League positions.

Brentford v Manchester City could be interesting, Brentford finish 2-3 places higher with win.. Citeh's squad players playing with freedom.

Managers and players don't care about that. The only teams with something to play for will be Everton, Leeds and Leicester (as it stands). I wonder if my one rival with a FH still to play will be that smart.

Erm managers always have to answer to the owners, board etc. who will push them to finish as high up.

Last time figures were made public each place up was worth £2.2M more in prize money, with all clubs getting a base payment and Champions getting a large prize for finishing first.

Yep, apart from lei leeds eve all other teams have nothing to play for. Those games usually edgy and tight. The games with nothing riding on them can be goal fests. Fancy palace forest to be high scoring

A meagre 8% green arrow with 6 to play twice plus Shaw, Rashford and Wilson. Top 200K would be a dream finish now, unfortunately I'm not reaching the dizzy heights of top 100K this year given I'm 52 points off! Shame, in a way kind of enjoyable, lessons learned. Already buzzing for next year!

      I’m glad I don’t have a FH - looks like a lottery

I’m not keen on a demoralised Arsenal against a resilient Wolves. And Villa are likely to have more to play for than Brighton?

DCL being fit could be key to the relegation fight.

      How about this?

      DDG (Bentley)
      TAA Moreno/Digne Shaw (Mina Toti)
      Salah Rashford/Gakpo Rodrigo Eze Ramsey
      Haaland Kane DCL/Wilson

Couldn’t afford that lot so amendments

        Pickford (Bentley)
        TAA Digne Shaw (Mina Toti)
        Salah Gakpo Rodrigo Eze Ramsey
        Haaland Kane Greenwood

Looked at Pickford, but can't get myself to own that t-rex. Digne also has been too much of a troll in the past.

    RMGW1T

    4.5
    6.5 - 5.0 - 4.5 - 4.5
    9.0 - 8.5 - 8.0
    14.0 - 10.0 - 8.0

    4.0 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.5

To afford a front 6 of Haaland, Osimhen, Wilson, Rashford, Odegaard, Diaz, I've had to play two 4.5m defenders. Worth the sacrifice?

Can see Arsenal missing out on top 4 next season. Playing in the CL, opposition teams will have a plan against their style of football, and the squad has no gamechangers who can come off the bench.

I'd imagine top four is going to be a lot more competitive next season with Liverpool and Chelsea probably back in the mix. Arsenal, Newcastle and Man Utd's squads could be stretched unless they invest heavily this summer.

Another problem with english tv rights is that we’re frequently having teams win the title without even playing a game… there’s no getting around it, today is now a huge anticlimax for city.. literally winning it at their training ground. Bit of a farce

I don't get the gripe here? Leagues aren't won in one moment. They're won over multiple. What's the solution? Rearrange the matches so that City played first? They also set the exact game times 2 months in advance, so hypothetically City and Arsenal could have lost all the games since and it's Newcastle Vs United for the title this weekend. Yes its nice to have the ol' Aguero moments (nice, if you're of the blue Mancunian persuasion) but I don't think you can craft that with the TV schedule every year

        This

  21. Arteta
    • 8 Years

Why do some people feel so happy when others fail?

It's not like the best team in the league added Haaland, the best young striker in the world and goal-scoring machine, to their already incredibly strong squad. They were the favourites to win the title in August and no one even gave Arsenal a chance to finish in the Top 4. No one!

I believe that Gunners will learn and get better. This is only the beginning and it will be scary when these youngers hit their prime. Arteta has transformed the team and he must learn from his mistakes as well. He had to be more ruthless at times and less stubborn in some situations. He ran a couple of players into the ground and became way too predictable with his tactics. It's safe to say that there's a lot of room for improvement.

Man City were flawless once again and got 40 out of the possible 42 points since February. So, how do you compete with that? They deserved to win the league and that's it. I'm not really worried about the future of my club and I realise that new opportunities lie ahead. Onward and upward!

      • 9 Years

Yeah. I don't get it TBH unless it's from local or historic rivals. I really don't get it on social media from randoms who have chosen to support a club without any link to that city/town and then have a go at other clubs.

pay no attention to it. its the kind of "hes Trash! he's the GOAT !youtube forum analysis most people specialise in today which has bled onto this site every no. its all black and white. context is the one thing thats conspicuously missing from peoples soundbite opinions these days and arsenals achievement in keeping up with this unstoppable state owned behemoth will eventually be looked on favourably by history imo and rightly so. But i dont agree city deserve anything until they are found not guilty on all charges that have levelled at them. I personally cant celebrate anything about this team until I know they were playing fairly.

This was an opportunity missed for Arsenal and it ended badly since the Liverpool game. The extra CL games next season will make things harder, as will the extra respect the PL opposition will give Arsenal. There doesn't appear to be much money available to invest to improve the squad.

The first XI is good and there are a few good backups (if they stay fit) like Tomiyasu, Tierney, Smith-Rowe and Trossard. But the overall depth in midfield, CB and striker is a cause for concern. One of the issues is that the subs themselves are just worse versions of the first XI player they replace. There isn't anyone who does something different.

Giving the extra demands on Arsenal next season, I think they need a CB, a defensive midfielder, a striker and an explosive winger (ideally someone who is more of a dribbler than a passer).

I disagree that nobody gave Arsenal a chance at getting top 4, a lot of money has been spent in the last few years there with this year being no different, I think a lot of people expected them to be fighting for those spots. But regarding the rest, can't disagree. Big learning curve for Arsenal this year for sure with reward still there given their finishing place, but next season having to manage CL alongside PL challenge will be tough, as well as other sides expected to add to their squads and try to get in the mix.

a pathetic 10 second acknowledgement on MOTD last night that man city have over 150 FPL charges being investigated by the premier league .all shearer could say was well its nothing to do with the players. and thats the end of that!. nothing to see here folks. So even non City supporting pundits-let alone the majority of city fans- are sticking that head firmly in the sand on this.

Likelihood is Man City will win any case against them. The winners from financial fair play and other similar financial rules are the largest clubs who can use expensive lawyers and accountants to find loopholes and make a strong case to argue the wording of the rules doesn't apply in the way the authorities say they do (i.e., the authorities are overextending the application of the rules compared to what they actually say).

you may be right but none of it is timbarred as in the CAS case so they cant use that technicality.and it does seem very specific such as mancinis pay off after he was sacked. id be surprised the prem league would make these allegations not knowing at least some of what citys counterclaims would be.and that doesnt excuse some one like alan shearer cravenly saying well the players just have to go out and perform and thats it. and jenas saying nothing.

of course not , but they could have at the very least have said something along the lines of well yes these are serious allegations and it would taint all their achivements if found guilty.. not basically brush all of it under the table becasue its 'nowt to do with the players' and jenas doesnt even have an opinion? lineker asked the question. they both dodged it.

Still buzzing but hangover not good 🙁

After being bookies favourite to get relegated, off the bottom of the table by big points earlier in the season. We are safe & not going to lie, after many years of banter at work the boots on the other foot now.

Congrats. Was just saying to a few mates this week that I'm delighted to see you guys stay up. Very difficult job for Cooper trying to gel so many new players together and cope with the PL demands, and despite so many hammerings early on this season I always saw Forest fans saying that they hoped Marinakis wouldn't sack him because he can turn it around. Looking at the record number of sackings this season and seeing Cooper having the chance to fix things and succeeding in doing that is a great story.

I'm expecting the same as this year unfortunately. Look at the number of players and engagement this year (and year on year), I don't see why they'd change it. Only real differences will likely be the likes of Martinelli, Rashford and Brighton players being more expensive but I still expect plenty of cheap players at bigger clubs

I say this every season, last season's bargains are rarely this season's bargains.

I have not been impressed by the quality of the Championship this season. I don't see any attackers who are performing like Bowen, Pukki, Toney, Mitrovic and Abraham when they were in the Championship. Burnley defence may be a worthwhile investment.

This week was kind of sad saying goodbye to a loyal FPL servant to my team in the shape of Gabriel Martinelli. Got him in GW1 and he's never left my side (other than for a FH) until this week, despite multiple WCs.

Even Haaland stepped out of my team for a few weeks.

Anyone likely to have owned a player for the full 38? Haaland probably obvious one, but wondering anyone held anyone less obvious?

Nice, GW7 for me with him when I finally gave up on Trent

Really? Surely there has been ample opportunity to be get rid?

What’s the point though? Waste of a transfer.

Trippier for me too. Was surprised he was talked down by so many in GW1 last season, although I never expected him to go on the crazy good runs he went on either

Had Martinelli GW1-GW17 then swapped for Odergaard whom I still have. Both have been great this season. Have similar sentiment for Odegaard so played him this GW but probably reluctantly move to EZE for GW38.

Kane would be insane to join Manchester United if he thinks this United team is going to be even close to guaranteeing trophies. High likelihood of trophies is the only reason to ditch your Spurs history and potential route to greatest ever club player

That and a wheelbarrow full of cash.

I'm sure he could swindle another 100k/week out of Spurs no trouble if he were to sign a contract extension

I doubt he thinks there's any guarantee, but there's certainly a better chance. Despite what seems like an indifferent season for ManUtd, they've already won a trophy, are in the FA Cup final, and are currently sitting tied with 3rd in the PL

I think Man Utd are in a better position than most people suggest.

With the addition of Kane, the spine looks solid with De Gea, Varane, Casemiro, Fernandes, and Kane. I think De Gea is the weakest link there though.

Eriksen, Martinez, Shaw, and Rashford are good support to that spine. They need to get more out of AWB, Sancho and Antony and look to get some legs in midfield for when Eriksen and Casemiro are rested or injured.
