Team of the Season – Harry Kane

It’s fair to say that Harry Kane’s rapid and unforeseen rise to prominence was a sight to behold for Fantasy managers. Initially pitched at a 5.0 price point in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, the youngster evolved into a lethal marksman under Mauricio Pochettino, affording us extraordinary value in a quite remarkable breakthrough campaign.

The Statistics

Kane had to settle for cameo roles in the first 10 Gameweeks of the season, with manager Mauricio Pochettino preferring Emmanuel Adebayor in the lone striker berth. After netting seven goals in six Europa League ties, Kane emerged from the bench to fire a late winner in Spurs’ 2-1 win over Aston Villa in early November, establishing himself as a permanent fixture in Pochettino’s first-team from that point onwards.

The Walthamstow lad took time to generate momentum, though- having dropped to 4.8 in FPL, he notched just one goal and an assist in his first five starts as he slowly found his feet in the top-flight. Then the fireworks begun, sparking a run of 15 starts in which Kane recorded just three blanks and tallied 17 goals and 14 assists. This astonishing burst of form brought about a meteoric rise in value to 6.4 by Gameweek 31, with the greatest volume of new owners (nearly 550,000) hitching a ride on the bandwagon in the wake of his 18-point haul against Chelsea on New Years’ Day – a match which, ironically, many owners benched him for.

Kane’s only real downturn in form arrived in the final quarter of the campaign, in which he mustered just two goals and one assist in the final eight Gameweeks as the hectic schedule started to take its toll. Despite shedding over 200,000 owners in the final five rounds of fixtures, Kane still ended the season with the highest ownership (45%) of any player in the FPL game, by virtue of his unparalleled output per unit investment.

In his first Premier League campaign as a starter, Kane finished second in the scoring charts (21 goals), behind Sergio Aguero’s 26. In addition, a total of 191 points saw him end up joint-fourth alongside David Silva, with only Aguero bettering his score amongst forwards. In the Spurs camp, Christian Eriksen (162) came closest to the English international’s tally, with Nacer Chadli (160) pushing the Dane in bronze medal position.

Averaging 5.6 points per appearance, Kane led the league with regards to appearances in the FPL Dream Team (seven) – a feat no doubt aided by his five braces and hat-trick, giving rise to seven 10+ points hauls. Moreover, only Hazard (42) was awarded more bonus points than Kane (32) throughout the season –again, all the more impressive given he failed to start a match until Gameweek 11.

The Prospects

Although the curtains have been drawn on the domestic campaign, Kane can’t afford to reflect on his recent successes just yet. Following Spurs’ pair of post-season friendlies against Malaysia XI and Sydney FC, the burgeoning star is set to participate in the European Under 21 Championship, which takes place in the Czech Republic. The tournament is scheduled between June 17–30, which could disrupt Kane’s pre-season preparations if the Three Lions progress to the latter stages. Pochettino recently suggested his first-choice frontman could miss the start of next term if such an event transpires, given that he’ll need to be afforded ample rest after featuring in 51 league and cup matches in 2014/15.

In light of last season’s exploits, it goes without saying that Kane’s value is set to rise substantially across the Fantasy games. Certainly, it seems debatable as to whether he’ll be elevated into the premium bracket after less than a year as a starter for Spurs, though there’d be no surprise if he comes in around 8.5 to 9.5 in FPL when the Player Price Lists are issued next month.

Nonetheless, bearing in mind that Kane averaged 6.3 points per start last season, Fantasy managers will remain confident he can still represent strong value. Even with a price hike on the horizon, Kane’s fixture-proof appeal, allied with spot-kick duties and consistency of returns (producing points in 16 of his 28 starts) will still make him a must-have for many, providing he doesn’t succumb to burn-out after such a hectic breakout season.

Certainly, with the inconsistent Eriksen managing a goal and two assists in the final 15 Gameweeks and Chadli still seemingly prone to his manager’s rotational whims, Kane will surely remain the most popular option at White Hart Lane for the campaign ahead.

                If he's a good price, yes. I have a history of doing the hokey-cokey with owning Silva as he does tend to have a lot of bandwagons - both ways.

      Looking at that price rises certainly look likely for Silva and Cazorla. Can see perhaps a slight fall for Ramsey.

      Mata 8m-8.5m
      Ramsey 8-8.5m
      Silva 10m
      Cesc 9.5-10m
      Caz -9m

          Trippier and redmond will be cheap enough to have a punt without causing much damage to your team if they fail..and they could be swapped easily to the next budget mid/def.

                They can't have a complete overhaul of philosophy. We've seen it with teams such as Blackpool and the old Burnley. They might not succeed, but they will still try to score goals.

            No, it will be an actual dead team. It just works out which starter/bench combos will generate the most points as it does the autosubs.

              This really is the thing. Trying to find players with complementary strong streaks to make good use of bench. Last season I think something like Jääskeläinen/Speroni on goal was gold, don't remember which way it was better though, and I'm not sure if I found something even better in the end. Last season had an easy basis really, as Suarez was the obvious captain, and the best vc choice (the most points during Suarez's ban) also had a decent overall season. But there still were many nice things to do, for example with Palace that sucked on first half of the season, but were tremendous on the latter, so could be used from bench somehow, but you just have to figure out how exactly to get them for their good matches only. One thing that helped that out was that Ramsey was in great form in autumn but spent a long stint injured after that. I think I had Puncheon on bench to come in for Ramsey, and their streaks complemented each other pretty well.

                The goalkeepers and C/VC are simple as you there are very few possible combinations (2025 for GKs, 261k for C/VC) so loops are ridiculously effective there.

                Best GK combos are; Cech/Fabianski (177 - 11m), Mignolet/Heaton (177 - 10m) but best value is probably Pantilimon/Heaton (173 - 9m)

                Best C/VC is Costa/Aguero (268) followed closely by Aguero/Kane (264) and Aguero/Terry 😯 (262)

                  Costa must be too expensive to take into team at all, so the intuitive Aguero/Kane it is.

          Have to say, this didn't seem to be that hard of a task on paper either, and I wasn't completely happy with the computer counted one. I did it too, on paper, last season with someone else and in fact I may have got better points than Billy in the end (after saying this I really should be able to find those teams from FFS history, but they're somewhere in the DZ of last summer and couldn't find them if my life depended on it). But I still don't believe it was the best possible.

              Yeah, I recall somebody actually came up with a pretty strong team that beat the real winner loudly (last season), and then I just made few adjustments to it to beat it even more. Like, starting Giroud and having him as vc (the top scorer until Suarez came back, I think the team I started to work with had YaYa as vc, but there was a few points difference to Giroud's advantage for first 5 GW's).

                  Okay. I think somebody did it more computer wise last season, and just recall that that team that somebody else put on paper and I tweaked a bit would have won the computer calculated team by some margin. Thought you were the one who calculated the official dead team last summer because of the first reply to my post.

          What program on your working on? My general pseudocode for avoiding repeating combinations is;

          for i in 1:(n-2){
          for j in i:(n-1){
          for k in j:(n){
          ...

                Also I just spotted above code should be:

                for i in 1:(n-2){
                for j in (i+1):(n-1){
                for k in (j+1):(n){
                ...
                ...
                }
                }

                  Haha just made a massive if statement to check all the previous combos for the other 5 possible duplicates then realised it would take far longer to check 1m previous combos every time than to just run the duplicates 😀

          Assign each player a different prime number then select only unique multiples - couldn't be simpler 🙂

          Please note - this is completely tongue in cheek, I'm sure there's a workable solution and if you haven't arrived at it by next week I'll try to help in any way I can (on holiday this week)

      The best one I could find, building on the FPL Overall Dream Team and on earlier work by Ludo and Balders was this one - can anyone beat it?

      Heaton(BUR,4.5, 150)
      Ivanovic(CHE,7.0, 179), Terry(CHE,6.5, 177), Bertrand(SOU,5.0, 140)
      Hazard(CHE,10.0, 233), Sanchez(ARS,10.5, 207), Silva(MCI,9.0, 191), Sigurdsson(SWA,6.0, 154)
      Aguero(C) (MCI,12.0, 216*2), Kane(V) (TOT,5.0, 191 + 48), Austin(QPR,6.0, 176)

      Any 4.0 goalkeeper, Downing (WHU,5.5, 93), Bellerin (ARS,4.5, 28), Yoshida (SOU,4.5, 38)

      GW1 Cost: 100.0m
      2437 points (4th)

        Good effort but I'd be disappointed if it didn't get beaten. Normally the dead team always wins and often by quite a lot. Perhaps if this is the best then the quality of FPL players has improved?

          I think this season it is just that there have been very few players who have performed well enough over 38 games for the dead team to do well.

            Yeah this is true. There hasn't been a strong template team this season which will limit the success of a strong dead team

          The optimal dead team has won in at least some previous seasons, but I don't think it will this time.

          Probably because the inclusion of players such as Kane and Austin resulted in the FPL Overall Dream Team only being slightly over budget - the only significant Dream Team players that I had to omit were Fabianski and Cazorla.

          This team would have been 56 points ahead of Simon March after GW20 but then lost ground because it had no wildcard, couldn't make transfers or change the captain or the bench, couldn't take advantage of DGWs and couldn't replace players such as Bertrand when they lost form. It also doesn't include players like Costa, Fabregas and Rooney who scored well in the early GWs.

        Not looked at it for a while but does Bellerin starting over Berty do better?

        Also Myhill/ Foster over your current keepers?

          Starting Bellerin over Berty doesn't fare better unless you have someone else as third back. But let's see...

        There must be several possible dead teams that would have beat the real winner. That striker 3 is good start I think. Where's the earlier work of Ludo and Balders?

        This season will have been different than the last one in that I recall the last season's best dead teams would have had 4-5 defenders, but now we got very good points over the season from two cheap forwards.

        My first change to you would be to start Bellerin in Bertrand's stead. That already should improve your results significantly.

          my work is literally a comment up from here. 4-3-3 isn't that great this year, close but it gets beaten by ~20 points.

            I think last season it was more like 4-4-2 really that was the strongest. But can't be sure anymore.

              Last year was different for sure because of Ramsey coming in cheap and there being no great cheap forwards. This year Aguero, Kane and Austin will not be beaten.

          No... with these exact players that doesn't work. But I'm pretty sure there's a way to make more points by having more of Bellerin's good end of season, by either starting him, or having a starting defender who got injured in mid-season.

        So, Billy's computer already came up with one significant change: Panti/Heaton. But then you have to get 0.5 somewhere.

          If we replace Heaton & 4.0 (150) with Panti & Heaton (123 + 50)
          and Terry (177) or Ivanovic (179) with Clyne (142)
          then Bellerin's score also increases from 28 to 34
          and the total score drops from 2437 to 2432 or 2430,
          but we have an extra 1.0m or 1.5m to spend on trying to improve the bench.

          So I think it's up to Billy's program to use this 1.0 or 1.5m to find a better bench combination than Bellerin and Yoshida.

            Intuitively I'd imagine Bellerin is worth having if you can get him fielded for second half of the season, but must have somebody better than Yoshida there for sure.

              I've looked at quite a few alternatives, but I still can't find any that will score more than 2437. Yoshida scored surprisingly well in the few matches he was required as an auto-sub. So good luck to Billy! 🙂

                  I've found another 10 points, by replacing Heaton/4.0 with Pantilimon/Heaton, Yoshida with Clyne, and Downing with Boyd.
                  So my revised squad is now:

                  Pantilimon(SUN,4.5, 123)
                  Ivanovic(CHE,7.0, 179), Terry(CHE,6.5, 177), Bertrand(SOU,5.0, 140)
                  Hazard(CHE,10.0, 233), Sanchez(ARS,10.5, 207), Silva(MCI,9.0, 191), Sigurdsson(SWA,6.0, 154)
                  Aguero(C) (MCI,12.0, 216*2), Kane(V) (TOT,5.0, 191+48), Austin(BUR,6.0, 176)

                  Heaton(BUR,4.5, 50), Clyne(SOU,5.0, 85), Bellerin(ARS,4.5, 28), Boyd(BUR,4.5, 33)

                  GW1 Cost: 100.0m
                  2447 points (3rd).

                  I'll probably have another look later to see whether I can tweak it any further.

                  Starting Clyne and dropping Bertrand to the bench increases their combined score from 140+85 to 142+86, bringing the total score to 2450 (2nd, still 20 points behind the champion).

                      Minor recalculation - their combined score should be 142+87, which makes the total score 2451 (still 2nd, and 19 points behind)

                      The squad just looks right and contains most of the names that one would expect to be there. It is probably as close to perfection as we are likely to get in my opinion, but if Billy or yourself can find any improvements then I will be very interested to see what they are. I would be very surprised if you can add another 19 points though!

      You guys appear to be missing something, if you have a team with players that missed minutes, your subs will be important for a dead team. Finding players that can score well when players like Costa and Mignolet missed games could be key, even finding players that score well while Kane was not first choice or when Austin was suspended or injured.

                Burnley had 10 CS. Made up of an early 3 CS in a row and 3 CS in the last 3 games of the season.

                If Norwich are in a dogfight to survive, it could happen again. Early on when teams underestimate them and at the end where it's do or die.

      Dufflinks also owned Dummett from GW3 until his January wildcard. Scored 3 successive clean sheets for him in GW10-12.
      He originally got him as a replacement for Chester, and this freed up just enough funds for him to bring in Clyne, Eriksen and Welbeck in the next 2 game-weeks.

      Sometimes it's better to ignore the Community's advice - actually, if you aren't going to follow it then why even ask them - or did you just want to know whether they could come up with stronger arguments than they did?

    Hazard 12m, Silva 9.5m, Cazorla 8.5m, Siggy 7m
    Aguero 12.5m, 6.5m, Deeney 5.5m

    GK 4m, DEF 4.5m, MID 4.5m, DEF 4m

    Are my valuations ok or a bit out? Would prefer Silva at 9 to get Theo at 9 ideally.

        It's nothing like Christmas cracker jokes, the humour comes from the tedious conversations and activities that he posts, in-keeping with Milner's style of play/presumed personality.

        It's not funny when you have to explain it...

              Suarez is the best ever In the Premiership, I feel Milner will bring similar motivation and drIve (not same ability) which will bring the best out of coutinho and Sturridge. I'm hoping Studge is affordable as have him earmarked.

            Yeah Coquelin is quite a late bloomer, older than Wilshere and the same age as Ramsey. I suppose that role is one that takes people longer to master, I don't think Makelele developed until quite late. Wanyama is a very good player.

              I know what you mean, but wouldn't exactly agree with this. Coquelin was regular for French youth internationals in all age groups and excelled on his loan spell at Lorient when 19-year-old, although the subsequent Freiburg loan didn't really pan out that well (in his defence, he was played oop all the time, on flank, which seems pretty strange considering that Freiburg was exactly weak in defensive central midfield and I would have assumed it was for that reason they got Coquelin). Arsenal is a big club, and DM is a tactically difficult position to take over on big level.

                Fair enough, I'll admit that my knowledge of his career is solely based on his Arsenal experience; when he played in that 8-2 vs Utd he did not look like the accomplished player he has become. I actually think, for the 2nd half of this season, he's been as good as Matic.

                  Well, of course he wasn't that either. But notice also that in that 8-2 rubbing the Arsenal team was generally quite second row, and inexperienced (although that 8-2 still wasn't quite the whole story of the match). Ramsey wasn't too good yet either (was heavily booed by the "fans"), they had Djourou, Traoré and Jenkinson (just moved in from lower divison) in defence, Arshavin was having his last non-play performances before sodding off, Lansbury coming in from bench. Nobody in that team, apart from Kos, Rosicky and RVP, looked to be up to the level, and yet they played attacking football, with a very high defence line, which was not much short of suicide with that lineup.

              By the way, Ramsey is actually 1 year older than Coq (or to be accurate, about 6 months older, but him being born 1990 he certainly is more one year older than 1991 born Coq and Wanayama, who are both born in 1991 with about 1 month distance from each other).

        If they were spaced out to a more reasonable timescale do you think you would have got higher marks ?....If the answer is yes to that question by the vast majority of young people (as I suspect it would be) then the system is an ass.

          It may produce higher marks but reduce long-term learning as people just cram for the exams one after another.

            This is a very good point. There were loads of things that I studied for exams and did well in, but completely forgot a week later. I got an A* at Maths GCSE, ask me anything about algebra or vectors etc. now I'd be absolutely clueless. Same with the way a couple of teachers taught History; you weren't really learning History, you were learning how to pass an exam.

              I realise that that is a different point to the one you were making, but that's an issue in the education system, particularly at 15/16.

            I'll accept that as a good point, no problem....but even having accepted it it's still too short a time frame even on that basis...

          Well, I got 3 As at A-Level 😎

          I always coped well with exam pressure, but my sister always struggled greatly with the schedule. I was always fortunate that I am someone that can keep a cool head and was able to structure/organise revision etc, but I do think cramming the exams into such a short space of time can be detrimental.

      It's ridiculous. I''m doing my A2s this month and have 3 clashes, meaning on three separate days I have 2 exams scheduled at exactly the same time so I have to do one then sit in a room for a couple of hours before I can do the other one! All of the exams are for the same subject so you think the exam board would make it so they don't let them clash...

      All kids should be banned from doing any revision in my opinion. If you have to cram for the exam and dont remember it in three months there was zero point taking the lessons or the exam.

        I think a distinction needs to be drawn between revision and cramming.

          Nope, the distinction should be between learning and revising. Learn it when you are taught it throughout the year and there is no need to revise.

          I do have a very good memory which I dont take for granted.

            As do I. How do you know you've learned something and therefore know there's no need for further revision? Knowledge isn't always a binary system, sometimes I think I have absolute knowledge of a subject but when I revise what I know I actually know half of what I thought I knew! 😆

            When you did A-Level Further Maths did you not do any practice questions in the weeks leading up to the exam, do you count that as revising or not?

            Coincidentally, I don't have time for this as I have to revise what I think I know but might not actually know as well as I thought I knew! 😀

            (This was intentionally worded absurdly)

      Good replies folks...interesting....And before I go back out....

      I think three GCSE's in a a month is about right, and fair, for all kids of 15 and 16 years of age. That would help them a lot I'm sure and far more reasonable than three or four in a week that some are having now.

        Have you seen his dribbling rating in Fifa 15 though?

        Seriously though, those who know (not me) say that he's "the new" Aguero.

          I have heard good things in "real life" as well, never actually seen him play though.

          I love the way people decide "the new ____" just based on their nationality. A new Argentinian attacker is the new Maradona/Ortega/Aguero, a new Brazilian is the new Pele/Kaka/Ronaldo, a new Englishman is always Gascoigne.

            I find "the Messi" equally amusing.

            They're invariably inferior to the Argentine Messi.

              "the Messi" should read "the <insert_nationality_here>".

              It's interesting that Messi was the last player to be called "the new" Maradonna.

                Everyone has to be the "new" someone, they can never just be their own player. Saviola, Aimar, Ortega, Riquelme and D'Alessandro were all "the new Maradona" before Messi. Basically any decent Argentinian attacker.
