CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2014/15 – FANTASY ITEAM MATCHDAY 13 PICKS

We’re counting down the hours until this season’s Champions League final gets underway. As always, we assess the Fantasy iTeam (FiT) Player Price List and offer two players per team for your perusal ahead of this evening’s deadline.

A free Fantasy football app, FiT is available on a number of mobile devices, including iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Android. Fantasy managers have until 10 minutes before the first kick-off in any given Matchday to make any final alterations to their starting XIs – this evening, then, that deadline is 7.35pm, as Barcelona and Juventus square up in Berlin.

We’ve supported FiT throughout the competition and have an official Fantasy Football Scout League, with an iPad mini available to the winner. There’s also a VIP European Match Day Experience for two on offer for the overall winner of the Fantasy iTeam Champions League game.

Barcelona

Lionel Messi’s superhuman efforts of late have somewhat overshadowed Neymar’s own superb run of form. The Brazilian prodigy tallied ten goals and two assists in his last ten starts, which is just two strikes and an assist shy of Messi’s haul over the same period.

With Messi an automatic pick for the majority of Fantasy managers, those undecided on Neymar and Luis Suarez as a double-up option should consider that the latter missed Barcelona’s last two league ties with a hamstring knock – although he did make a swift recovery to clock 78 minutes in the Copa del Rey final.

Neymar (11.5) has been irrepressible in the Champions League knockout stages, notching six goals in his previous four starts. Moreover, the former Santos starlet ranked second only to James Rodriquez (six) in term of key passes (five) during the semi-finals, highlighting the strong creative edge to his game.

Dani Alves (7.1) has been one of Barca’s chief facilitators in recent matches, serving up six assists in the Catalan club’s last eight fixtures in all competitions. The Brazilian played a pivotal role in Barcelona’s 3-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey final, laying on two assists for his team-mates.

Alves’ relentless raids down the right flank have also reaped rewards on the European stage, considering he was the only defender to register an assist in the semi-finals. Although he hasn’t netted recently, Alves did attempt the most shots (four) of any Barcelona player outside the afore-mentioned attacking trio over his side’s last four league ties, illustrating his eye for goal.

Juventus

Carlos Tevez (10.3) was rested for three of Juventus’ final four Serie A clashes, before lasting the full 90 minutes against Verona on the last day of the season. As such, the ex-Manchester United marksman should be in prime condition when he lines up against Luis Enrique’s men.

Tevez boasts solid form, having tallied three goals in six starts in all competitions, including the winner in the first leg of the Old Lady’s semi-final against Real Madrid. Indeed, during the semi-final stages, the Argentine led the way for shots (five) and efforts inside the box (three) for Juventus and was placed second in terms of key passes (five) among all players.

Furthermore, Tevez could well be encouraged by the fact that Barcelona conceded three goals in their last Champions League match-up and failed to keep a clean sheet in their previous trio of European road ties.

Whilst the likes of Andrea Pirlo and Paul Pogba offer alternatives in the centre of the park, we’re opting for an in-form differential as our second for the Serie A winners. If you’re looking for a cut-price option to help balance the books, Roberto Pereyra fits the bill perfectly. On loan from Udinese, the Argentina international (priced at a mere 4.6) has enjoyed success in the “number ten” role of late, netting in his side’s last two fixtures.

Admittedly, Pereyra has been restricted to substitute duties in Juventus’ recent Champions League ties, yet his late-season flourish could tempt Massimiliano Allegri to hand him an increased role in Berlin. Indeed, bearing in mind that no player has featured in more Serie A fixtures for Juve in the campaign gone by, Pereyra looks set for a role off the bench at the very worst as the Italians look to upset the odds and emerge triumphant.

FANTASY FOOTBALL SCOUT LEAGUE

With just today’s final remaining, Adriel Cheung leads our FiT League on 852 points – 26 points ahead of Gavin Rolston, whilst Juan Garcia is close behind Gavin in third, on 825 points. The league name is Fantasy Football Scout and the pin is 11155.

Some of you may remember an article I posted last November looking at how clean sheets have historically broken down between each half of the season:

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2014/11/24/a-decade-of-premier-league-clean-sheets/

Just to bookend that discussion, here are the results for the season just ended:

    http://i.imgur.com/POVN9f8.jpg

The evidence for a strengthening of backlines after Christmas continues to be rather limited.

Seven teams had more clean sheets in the second half of the season than in the first half, 10 had more clean sheets in the first half of the season and 3 teams had the same number of cleanies in each half.

The Pulis effect is particularly obvious, with West Brom picking up 10 clean sheets in the second half of the season compared to just 6 in the first half.

Of the clubs that finished in the top 4, only Arsenal did better in the second half of the season. Chelsea and United did slightly worse and City had 7 cleanies in each half.

Clean Sheets is a dangerous stat to work with: even a slight redistribution of Goals Conceded could drastically alter the numbers. That beeing said, the avarage number og Goals Conceded pretty much show the same. The avarage for each team in the first half of the season is 1,29. In the last half it is 1,27.

Perhaps, but to state the obvious, it's clean sheets that earn FPL points hence the reason to focus on them.

I also had a look at goals conceded and as you say, it shows a similar pattern to clean sheets. Here's the equivalent chart for goals conceded:

A season keeper plays all 38 games. You also have a firm desire for this player to remain in your team for the season and wouldn't dream of removing him from your team at any stage. Even when the fixtures turn sour, this player is not removed simply because of the player's form transcends fixtures.

      This is a season keeper.

I like the theory of the over 0.5 goals tactic - but on closer analysis it just seems like a way to get a decent goalscorer bet - so the likelihood is of just a small win but not really being worth the effort, or a massive loss. So I think I'll go with Barca in 90 and a first goalscorer. Not sure who, though.

    Fantasy Football Scout

Is there such a thing as a season keeper in Fantasy Football.

With players like Hazard and in season's gone by Suarez providing consistent returns and remaining injury free arguably they are worthy of the term 'season keeper'. But is it more sensible to switch out such players when fixtures stiffen?

The last season keeper I had in my team was Darren Bent, when he played for Sunderland. Goal scoring consistency and an emormous price rise ensured he never left my team that season. But since then I've never had a player in my team from gwk 1-38.

Do you think 'season keeper' is a myth?
Did any players stay in your FPL side for the entiire season?

Firstly is it strictly a player in your team for all 38 weeks? Or just the vast majority? If the latter then yes, in my opinion, but usually these players are rare, and have wonder season, giving valuable returns pretty much week in week out. I realistically don't think its something you'll see every season, because the premium players can always leave your team for a few weeks, whereas season keepers are so good they just don't.

I'm not sure even Hazard or Suarez were/are season keepers. Suarez missed the first 6 weeks of his breakout season and Hazard had a pretty slow start and finish last season.

I don't think I ever have kept a player for a whole season. However, that may be part because I didn't initially have a player that I bought early on and kept till the end, part because a player I would have kept for the season, got injured/suspended.

Consistency and huge price rise are quite rare- that's probably why I haven't had a season keeper since the heyday of Darren Bent.

I don't think that there is any such thing as a season keeper. For me it's all about form and a bit of fixtures. If a player keeps giving returns for 33-34 weeks, then maybe we can say he was as season keeper. For me, there wasn't any season keeper last season.

Thought Clyne gonna be one but I sold him in GW33. Maybe you can Hazard was but Fab in first half -> Hazard in 2nd half was better and sold him in GW37 again. Sold Kane in in GW35 as well I think. Didn't regret it at all.

In the upcoming season, if City plays 1 striker up top, Aguero maybe season keeper but he gets injured. Hazard starts slowly. Apart from that, I can't see anyone to be a season keeper as of now,

Depend on next season concept of rise and fall of price.

If EPL tower stick with current concept of rise and fall of price - we can afford to have no season keeper.

But if they reverted it back to the price concept in 2013/14 season (Suarez, Yaya) , yes - someone might be a season keeper.

I'm sure it won't be exactly the same - they always tinker a little. Although as none of the price sites appear to have 100% cracked it they may keep it the same.

But I'm predicting a change. I'm also predicting that someone will come on here GW3 and claim that the new price algorithm is 'ruining the game'. Happens every year.

          1. Camp No No
            • 10 Years
            8 years, 11 months ago

I think the reason we were unable to crack the algorithm is that they changed it over the season. Which I approve. It may be a necessary means in their battle against our effort to crack the code which is essentially a form of cheat, or playing against the game, rather than the game. As long as players' prices generally rise because they are bought or perform well (this is an alternative used in some fantasy footballs), and drop because they are sold or perform badly, it's logical enough, and then I just hope the changes will not be too swift or indeed too predictable to make this a stock exchange game.

You may be right. Naively I believe FPL Towers are beyond dirty tricks like this - and they set out the pricing rules at the start of the season and stick to them. But I can't really prove this.

Yes there is such a thing, but for me neither are rigid, the main area i always feel i can gain an advantage on most other managers is getting on players early before they become a bandwagon and equally (if not more so actually, given that people seem to get overly attached to players in their team ) off bandwagons before or as players lose form.

This season the only player i hung on to all season was Hutton for some reason!

I had Hazard all season and never had a reason to think of removing him. But he was the only one.

I'd like to have a few season keepers next time if possible - it saves on transfers. For that reason I'll be willing to invest more in my defence in the hope that I can keep 1 or 2 of them all season, injuries permitting.

I had Hazard all season, and only took out PvA and Sigurðsson for injury and suspension. Agüero was in as soon as he was starting, and only came out for injury too.

So yes, but you won't have them if you points chase or you don't manage to select the right players early on which is not always obvious in itself.

      Could see both arguments here....

If you are fortunate enough to have a Suarez from the beginning of the season... Although he missed loads of the first set of games last year then yes you could have yourself a season keeper.

Although those return consistantly are unlikely so no harm not having one...

I personally normally end up with a low budget player that I keep and am lucky enough that I don't have to,transfer out in the Jan WC

Players like Hazard, Sanchez, Terry, Ivanovic, Henderson and 4.5 million keepers surely offer the option of keeping them for the entire season.

The "Season keeper" is only a sensible idea or option if it comes with the unspoken caveat that the player must avoid injuries threatening a month or more out or serious drop in form or playing time.

Obviously any player we start in our team who scores lots of points consistently will stay in the team for as long as they continue to do so and will therefore be a season keeper.
Of course we won't know that until the end of the season.

By the way, your maths fail:

      1.33*50=66.50.

      So, it's either -33.50 or +70.

I would not make this combination. Either leave the first out altogether, or don't bet against it afterwards to eliminate the whole win.

I am betting for the first time. Can anyone confirm that with two bets there is no possibility of losing but win or get even

        Juventus win: 5.25
        draw: 3.65
        Barca win: 1.5
        5.25*200=1050
        1.5*600=900
If barca wins I get 1050-200=850
        If juve wins I get 900-250= 750
Thats correct and worth risking right?

And that draw is not at all unlikely.

Your bet seems pretty good to take, in case that the odds remain 3.4 for Juve to win the trophy for the early minutes of the in play, which is not sure.

Kind of. Your maths is slightly out. It looks like you're betting 800 on it not being a draw - at less than even money (you're up 450 if Barca win and 700 if Juve win). But if it's draw at 90 minutes then you lose the lot.

        External competitively:

        CL QF's 2015:

        French clubs: 2
        English clubs: 0
The smallest club of the French league made the EL knock out rounds.

        Internal competitivity:

English champion lead the league all season, deciding title on round 35.
French champion only took the lead at round 30 and sealed the title on round 37
English CL teams were affirmed on round 36.
French CL teams were affirmed on last round (38).
English league lowest budget team lost the whole league
French league lowest budget team finished 10th despite playing EL knock out rounds.
In PL, difference between champion and the first relegated was 52 points
In France, difference between champion and the first relegated was 46 points.

Unless you meant he should move to Spain/Germany. Then it's a different deal.

Apologies, I've only just seen this now. I was thinking Spain and Germany but also England too admittedly. I'll start by clarifying I mean competitiveness for the league as that's where the majority of his games will be played. Although it was close, this is the third season in a row PSG have won Ligue 1 which puts them peerless in the French league. They have the spending power and will win it again and again... and again. Whereas if you look at the Premier League there's been three different winners in the last three years which is much more varied!

Your stats on relegation and lowest budgets appear pretty irrelevant as I'm talking about the best players in the best teams competitiveness as opposed to relegation-style. When I said "make a name for himself'' I meant becoming an all time great and to do that you have to be successful in Europe so your CL stats are good... although a relatively small sample size! French teams historically don't win European cups although that could change I suppose. Some fair points. 🙂

Not buying this yet. On a fast search, there's nothing on this in the actual French press, neither clubs website even hints at the direction, so at least nothing official is there yet. Also, PSG has been asking for the kid, but OL chair Aulas responded just week or two ago that the price is upwards of €100M. And the player said he wants to stay for another season. Seems pretty unlikely to have happened then.

Are you betting 200 on Juve to win in 90 and 600 on Barca to win in 90?

If so then if Barca win in 90 then you get: 900(total return) - 200(Juve lost bet) - 600(initial stake) = 100

      If Juve win in 90 then: 1050 - 600(lost bet) - 200(stake) = 250

You are NEVER going to win doing this. Bookies specifically set the bets at a level where you cannot possibly win. They adjust them depending on how much money they receive for each of the bets, so that in general they always make money regardless of the result.

This is generally true, but you can occasionally find underrounds in the odds.

Right now, there's one on the Cameroon v Ecuador women's game. You can get 6/5 on Cameroon, 11/4 on the draw and 19/5 on Ecuador with three different bookies for a 7% underround.

You could bet your stake in the ratio 49/29/22 for a guaranteed win regardless of the result.

No. You're staking 800 so your 'profit' is -70 for a draw, +250 for a Juve win, -200 for a Barca win.

      3. Billy Gilmore

        You're also betting $800 on each of those, so it's -70, +250, -200

P.S. those odds are awful, bet365 has 4.20, 6.00 and 1.61 just for one example.

The smart play on the bet365 offer is to back a non-runner in the first goalscorer market.

Select a player who ideally isn't even in the match squad or has very little chance of starting or coming on.

If your player isn't on the pitch when the first goal is scored your bet is refunded as a non-runner.

You then have the £50 in play which is refunded if it loses.

Id be inclined to go Messi/Neymar/Suarez FGS when the game kicks off.

Pretty much all of them are offering free bets - the only difference with the Bet365 one is that you don't have to be a new customer - which is a major plus, granted - but still for those of us who haven't signed up yet to one of PP, Coral, Ladbrokes etc then you can put on an equivalent risk free bet the same as Tone's. I'm not saying I'm not impressed with Tony's plan - it's logically sound. But in this instance a new punter has as much incentive to join Bet365 as they do the others. That was my point - not to say that his plan was a bad one.

From my experience hardly any of the offers were anywhere near as good as Bet365's. Most of them give you your winnings as a free bet, or refund you losing bets as more free bets. Or make you turnover your winnings 3/4 times before withdrawing etc etc

Do any of them actually give you your money back like Bet365 do?

I don't think so - Bet365 are unique in that, as far as I can tell. But to me, giving you your stake back and not charging you for it in the first place are pretty much the same thing - at least as far as your overall balance is confirmed. Betway, Boyles, NetBet are all offering a £50 free bet (maybe others) - and it appears you can cash out the winnings straight away. But, like I say, new customers only, so it's a once-only offer compared to Bet365's.

My post relates to how to play the Bet365 in play offer which is a regular thing these days.

Sure you can get free bets with bookmakers though bookies doing free bets of £50 with winnings withdrawable are thin on the ground as far as I know.

I posted this as I saw people discussing tactics for the Bet365 offer sure it perhaps it could be applied to other betting offers which to me would say its a good tactic.

The best advice I can give anyone betting or playing cards is: don't lose money.

And played right this is a no lose plan.

I did it in the Real match with Ronaldo and it came up trumps.

        Thus I thought id share.

Well BT have Champions League next season, so the debate is thrown wide open. Sky's coverage is far better, but I am not sure that they will have the upper hand in number of matches for much longer.

BT have the early saturday game. Sky have the late saturday game, MNF and Super Sunday.

But generally speaking for TV shows and movies and things like that, Sky is better in your opinion?

Sky is probably better, but there isnt that much in it to be honest.

"If Christian signs with us, I would be the happiest man in the world," Hazard told reporters in Belgium.

“I have a great relationship with him and would like nothing better than to play with him. Christian is 25. He is at an age where he has to make a good career choice.

"Not that Aston Villa is a small club but he has already played many great games and can now play in the Champions League."

Quite a possibility. Reckon Remy would leave or stay as backup?

Possible that Remy could take up a right wing role with Cuadrado at the Copa? I'm really not sure whether he'll leave our not tbh...
