Dugout Discussion

Dugout Discussion – Middlesbrough vs Arsenal

After Diego Costa and Zlatan Ibrahimovic managed a single point between them at Old Trafford yesterday, all eyes are on Alexis Sanchez as Arsenal roll up to the Riverside in tonight’s final Gameweek fixture.

Recently shuffled onto the left flank, a run of three matches without a goal has knocked our confidence in the Chilean ahead of the Gunners’ double Gameweeks 36 and 37.

Indeed, only 5.9% have handed Sanchez the armband as he attempts to reclaim his spot as top scoring player in Fantasy Premier League, having been knocked off his perch by Romelu Lukaku at the weekend.

Tonight’s team selection looks to have handed Sanchez a change of role. To everyone’s surprise, Arsene Wenger appears to have set up with a 3-4-2-1 formation or even a 3-4-1-2, with Sanchez perhaps joining Olivier Giroud up front – a concern perhaps for the 91,000+ who sold the Chilean ahead of Gameweek 33.

Tonight’s encounter also gives us the chance to run the rule over the hosts as they prepare for a potentially profitable double Gameweek 34 against Bournemouth and Sunderland.

Both Victor Valdes and Ben Gibson currently sit second for transfers in among keepers and defenders since Saturday’s deadline, though in the four matches under new manager Steve Agnew, Boro have been somewhat hot and cold – keeping two clean sheets and conceding at least three times in the other two.

Valdes misses out this evening with a rib problem sustained at Burnley last time out – an injury kept under wraps until tonight: Brad Guzan claims the keeper’s jersey.

Sitting six points from safety, the Teesside team are in desperate need of wins now. Having failed to score in six of their last eight, though, most will likely steer clear of the hosts’ attack unless they can punish the Gunners this evening.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Rib injury of some sort. Seems like it's not too severe as his status for the DGW has been described as "touch-and-go". Not very helpful for us FPL managers... :/

that's why I stuck him in on Wildcard but thinking it might be better to target Arsenal attack x 2 rather than a defender, they just can't keep clean sheets to save their life right now

that will be a wait and see and assess I think. Giroud or Welbeck could come into that third striker position cause I'll want to replace Benteke with a DGW striker, and 2 x DGW striker even better.

Arsenal doesn't defend well though. The even conceded against Boro, and their fixtures don't look much better with the likes of Spurs (A), ManU, So'ton (A), and Stoke (A) coming up. All 4 of those are fixtures (or in the case of ManU, a specific manager rather than fixture itself) in which Arsenal has not done well in lately

I have him. Wondering if it's better to keep him and Sanchez or go for Ibra and Zaha. I'm not totally convinced that's a great move, even with a wildcard to play. Liverpool have great fixtures, he's a cheap 3rd with Kane and Lukaku.

Hazard for Alexis. Sane for one of the Spurs mids.

        Cheers Athreya.

Inspite of Alexis being gash for the past few weeks, I can't lose him knowing he has 4 games in 2 GWs over 36-37, and is a likely TC option.

Which Spurs mid would you lose for Sane ? I thought Alli was essential, but watching the Bournemouth game it seemed like Eriksen was far more threatening

        1. athreya
          • 11 Years
          7 years, 1 month ago

Yeah you will have to get Alexis back for 36. Just seems like Chelsea will be going all out in next few games to put the title to bed while Arsenal are almost down to playing for pride.

Tough one re Spurs mids. I agree Erik looked more threatening but He trolled me whenever I had him in the past so I have Alli and Son. Will lose son when I WC.

Cheers Athreya, I need to consider this for a bit longer and drop 1 out of Alexis/Hazard/Eriksen/Alli. Maybe the pressers will bring some news that helps with deciding

        2. Moosie the Staggie
          • 12 Years

The thing is Erik is the assister mainly. Alli was benefiting when Kane was out but now Kane will probably be in positions that Alli occupied.
All will probably score well until the end but if I had to lose one it would definitely be Alli.
He struggles to get bps compared to the other two and has no set pieces. Think I still prefer him over a spurs defender though.

Cheers Moosie. Yeah I agree with your assessment, I think Kane return is putting a dampener on Alli's returns. Eriksen still has set pieces and BPS, and might give better returns than Dele.

    Possibly AOA this GW.

    Valdes*
    Bailly, Gibson.
Alli, Sanchez, Hazard, Zaha, De Roon.
    Kane, Aguero, Origi.

    Pickford, B Davies, Holgate, Yoshida
    2ft, 0.5m.

I'd agree if Boro were closer to safety and just needed a couple of 0-0s to survive.

But as things stand it looks like they may need to go out and attack the opposition and be positive, so I don't think Gibson will keep 2 CS. If you're feeling punty maybe you can captain one of the Palace attackers

What is the consensus on Ibra's game time? He plays Anderlecht then sits out Burnley away and returns for city away?

Alternatively with rashford playing so well could he start vs Anderlecht along with Ibra? Then it becomes difficult to predict rotation. It's all very confusing.

Yeah I have that forward line and torn about what to do. Problem is I have Zaha as well and it seems madness to take 2 bites out of Palace. They can easily get a hiding at Pool and limited to 1-2 goals vs Spurs.

Of Ibra game time is guaranteed I would go for Tekkers to Ibra.

Depends heavily on what your objectives are, leading in ML, chasing overall ?

If you're leading in your ML and defending a 50 pts+ lead I'd just do lukaku -> Ibra and be pragmatic about it.

No one's going to captain Lukaku and even if he scores a hat trick it's 17 pts. But if Ibra scores a couple of braces (very unlikely but possible), and a your rivals captain / TC him then you're done.

So is GW34 the best time to play benchboost, in terms of this is when there are more double gameweekers than any other week? Or am I missing something?

GW37 maximum DGWers. But BB really depends on your team and bench. If your bench is a bunch of cheapies then it doesn't matter.

Yeh good point. GW34 looks best to be - will take a lot of hits before 37 to get a similar setup

It seems like it really is necessary to get Ibra, just as protection against a haul and the TCs lurking. H/T Enzo above.

But then Citeh and Burnley away don't look all that great on paper do they?

True. I wonder what the motivation level v Pep might be, though.

Sorry I'm not trying to engage in scare-mongering..

But yeah even if Ibra gets a goal and a couple of assists and plays say 120 minutes, you're looking at TC haul of around 60 pts. Imagine not owning him at all and captaining Kane or Lukaku for 2 pts.

There's always a flip side, what if Ibra plays 120 mins in two difficult games and blanks while Kane/Lukaku haul?

That's a significant gain when you consider all those TC's will also be burned.

Burnley A and City A are by no means good on paper for him (if he plays both after Andelect on Thursday) should not really be ruled by fear, look at all those who were too scared to back Kane last GW because Lukaku ownership was so big and he was popular in the polls, they lost out.

I don't know, I feel like it's easy to brush this off as playing with fear / being a dullard, but if Ibra's effective ownership is over 100% after including captains / TC, I think it makes sense to just go for him and block rivals.

Again, let me stress that this is only if you're comfortable with your position in your ML. If you're chasing, or trying for maximum possible Overall Rank you could probably captain Kane / Lukaku or even Gestede if you like playing bold.

That is a lot of people gambling on someone playing twice who may not play twice and even then, may struggle to score big.

The fixtures don't support the fear given their schedule, could easily be a huge trap and a week where many who are stuck, can gain big if they don't fall into it.

It will be interesting for sure to see the EO numbers for top 10k from smartypants on FPL Discovery come kick off time this weekend. I feel Ibra will be higher than either Lukaku or Kane.

Again, I'd rather call it pragmatism than fear, I think that the negative connotations to "playing with fear instead of playing bold" unnecessarily affects decision making in FPL.

I think it's totally legitimate. I can win my league--ahead by 100-- if I play conservatively but also exploit the doubles.

Most likely. Keeping Kane and Lukaku. Was tempted to shift Origi out, but Ibra is just not pushing my buttons. More tempted by Negredo to be honest.

Thoughts on this? 1 FT & 1.3 ITB.

    De Gea
    Naughton / Chambers / Vertonghen
    King / Coutinho / Alli / Alexis
    Lukaku / Defoe / Vardy

Pickford -- De Roon, Pieters, Kingsley

Is doubling up with Coutinho & Firmino given their remaining fixtures or Alli & Kane given their form a crazy idea?

Yes my main reason for using this DGW to dump him and get De Gea or Hennessy

A chance yes but I don't see it.
Hughes seems quite a loyal manager and it would be extremely harsh on Grant as he has been brilliant for them.
Butland will soon take the spot but he will probably be sold to a bigger club some time in the near future so they need to treat Grant respectfully imo

Hey chaps thoughts with this lot
    Valdes
    Valencia Davies Pieters
    Alli Zaha Sanchez Firmino N'Diaye
    Lukaku Kane

    Bench Pickford McAuley Barnes Stephens
    0.7ITB 1FT
Was thinking McAuley to Gibson and possibly Pieters to some one else for a hit but now Valdes injury is a concern for the weekend.
I don't have WC left so it could be smarter to start preparing for GW36-37 haha and still pondering who to captain.....
    Cheers lads

Will go costa then.... Should put ibra in now or wait and see how he performs on Thursday? (hes also set to go up in price 11.5m when the mods get on to change the price)
