Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Kane Falls Short

Tottenham Hotspur dominate the north London derby but almost have to settle for a draw as many Fantasy managers endure a similarly frustrating afternoon.

Harry Kane scored his seventh goal in as many matches against Arsenal to secure a 1-0 win, although the scoreline could, and should, have been considerably more emphatic.

Spurs had three times as many attempts on goal as their rivals and six shots on target to the Gunners’ one, with Kane both the hero and the villain of the piece.

The striker’s winner, from a Ben Davies assist, rewarded the 980,000+ (17.8%) Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who handed him the captaincy.

But that was the only one of four chances, three of which were deemed big opportunties, that Kane managed to convert.

His profligacy cost him the chance of any bonus points and kept Arsenal in the match, with substitute Alexandre Lacazette missing two late chances to grab something from an encounter in which they were second best throughout.

It’s still five goals in five Gameweeks for Kane, but his failure to add any bonus to his six-point haul will be seen as vindication for the decision by many to seek captaincy rewards elsewhere – particuarly if that happened to be Sergio Aguero.

For the first time since Gameweek 21, the Spurs forward was not the most-captained player, with 1,265,966 (22.0%) of armbands instead being handed to Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.

Whether the Egyptian will be able to confirm that decision as the correct one – particularly in light of Aguero’s stunning 21-point haul – remains to be seen.

What is not in doubt is the continued decline of the Spurs midfield as a consistent points-scoring unit.

Son Heung-min, who was sold by 101,000+ going into the weekend, blanked for the fourth successive Gameweek and made way for Erik Lamela on 69 minutes, while Dele Alli (two assists in six matches) and Christian Eriksen (two goals in six) also failed to deliver.

Davies thrives again

Instead, it was the backline that impressed.

Davies’ sixth assist of the season brought him level with Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta as FPL’s most creative defender. That has drawn a reaction from the market, with Davies the most signed player ahead of Gameweek 28 – attracting 34,000 owners to this point.

A clean sheet and maximum bonus brought in 12 points for the Welsh international’s 15.1% ownership and they will be hoping he is handed an eighth successive start against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 28 if Danny Rose is given the nod for Spurs’ midweek Champions League tie.

Fellow defenders Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez were handed the other bonus points as Mauricio Pochettino’s side made it three straight home clean sheets in the league.

Ramsey misses out

As for Arsenal, the day started badly when the fourth most popular purchase of the Gameweek, Aaron Ramsey, was ruled out with a groin problem.

And it barely improved after that as Arsene Wenger’s uncharacteristically negative tactics, crowding the central areas and inviting crosses, backfired when Kane headed home.

The Gunners’ attacking weapons were also blunted as a result, with the most bought player ahead of Gameweek 27, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, subbed off on 63 minutes after creating precisely zero chances and having no shots.

That was a huge blow to his 288,000+ new managers, while the 235,000+ who brought in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were equally disappointed.

The striker had no shots on goal, a mere two penalty area touches and 23 touches overall – the fewest of any player who started the match. He was, however, unlucky to be flagged offside when put through in the first half.

All those new managers on Ramsey, Mkhitaryan and Aubameyang could well be left to rue their move further as Arsenal entertain Man City next – if, that is, the fixture even goes ahead.

Should City need an FA Cup fifth round replay with Wigan, then their Gameweek 28 match at the Emirates will have to be rescheduled.

The Man City match-up is hardly an ideal opportunity for Arsenal’s defence to step up either.

They’ve now gone nine matches without a clean sheet and with a visit from Pep Guardiola’s free scorers, or a blank, to come next, further sales of Nacho Monreal, who was moved on by 82,000+ this week, look more than likely.

I wont be surprised when Salah gets his first hatrick. He has been scoring goals every other week so i don't understand why managers who captained him are unhappy. Cheer up, better things coming ahead 😀

Which of these under performing big guns will score MOST and LEAST points between now and the end of the season?

Tough question. I would be wary of Man U options as they are not free scoring. Mane could be the most exciting to own out of those.

    Morning all,

I'm an avid viewer of this site and love listening to the Scoutcast. I'm surprised to hear there's been some criticism lately!?

I just wanted to say to everyone here (not just the mods) that this is a great community and a massive help every week. I don't always enjoy the game and I don't always agree with all. I seem to remember giving Mark stick once for changing on his Scoutcast captain pick. But he posted back and addressed it and we moved on. Top man, top site, top community. Keep up the good work all.

I dont know how anybody could listen to a podcast about Fantasy football and scramble their brains even more. all your first instincts will go out the window after an hour of different opinions.

They actually use some stats when comparing players so that helps. The opinionated stuff is amusing sometimes and no different to the sort of talk I have at work. It can sway your decision sometimes, but then I did have Aguero (c) this week so not always.

Thanks Deadstar. A lot of of us are or were feeling fragile having missed out on Aguero. I know I am.

Missed opportunities and frustration we will come here to vent - that's understandable. I can't speak for Granville - but I don't mind it so much if its reasonable. What irks me is when a view offered on the ScoutCast is taken as the FFS viewpoint.

The ScoutCast can never be consistent with everything we write because we just talk unedited and unscripted about our own views and teams. What we say on there is wide open to criticism - which I think is fair enough - I don't agree with a lot of what's said on the ScoutCast but I don't censor anyone and tell them to "tow a party line" - I think that would be awful.

The ScoutCast isn't the FFS voice, it's each individual's voice and individuals make mistakes. I think all probably regret not getting Aguero one way or another, over here on the site, we weren't avoiding Aguero in our articles or recommendations.

The articles are far more studied and indicative of what FFS feels and I work very hard to make sure that personal bias doesn't leak into them too much. But when they are ignored in favour of some opinions offered on the ScoutCast, that's when I get frustrated a little.

I get it, and I think most that view the site and listen to the Scoutcast will get that too. Funny thing is if Salah get a a few goals today I don't think most will care as much about not having Aguero.

I think it's just people that feel bad (because they didn't get Aguero) just trying to make other people feel bad (you guys). Without getting too deep, some people just like to bring others down with them if it's gone wrong - wouldn't worry about it. I'm pretty sure none of you said 'don't get Aguero', you just didn't get him yourselves.

There are so many choices and so much luck involved that in the end you could toss a coin each week and be crowned FF Champion!
My lads partner has never played Fantasy Football in her life, has started playing in our leagues this year and yet has consistently out performed all of us 🙁

Lyddia has listened to advice and then has made her own decisions and sits at 85,694 this morning dropping 10,000 places as she captained King H. Fortunately I captained Aguero and so have managed to close the gap.

I hope that I will prevail eventually but as you can see below she has been v consistent and still has all chips remaining.

Fantasy football can ruin your mood like nothing else. Pair that with your ACTUAL football team performing poorly and one can end up getting quite down.

Remember to put things in to perspective though. It's only a game. No one has died. You'll get over the frustration. You'll get over the jealousy. You'll learn from your mistakes.

Go outside. Experience the beauty of nature. Hug a loved one. Try to find the positives and move on.

      honesty considering this yes

happy to hold for now but with three games to play until again and Jesus bound to give him a break I'm looking to move him on

will be waiting for now, but it's not madness with title gone he's more likely to play the cup games

    DDG - Pereira
    Stones - Dunk - Fernandez - Francis - Hunemeier
    Salah - Sterling - Mane - Walcott - Lingard
    Kane - Aguero - Quaner

    1 FT and 1.2m itb.

Don't think he'll get a ban. It's all too circumstantial that it was racially motivated. You can see from the footage he's more than happy for Bong to go crying off to the ref. But then he overhears the content has been shifted towards a racial slant and he visibly gets very angry.

I'm not being lazy here. I have analysed every permutation and its driving me nuts! Your thoughts are most welcome

    ddg
    alonso ota bauer
    salah sterling son walcott ling
    kane wilson

    subs. pereria, duffy, holgate, quaner

    1ft 2.2mil itb....

Fires to put out: holgate isnt playing. I either downgrade him to a 3.9 and use the money elsewhere or get it Monreal.

gk: im happy to keep ddg and pereria on the bench.

def: ota is a worry, overpriced and under delivering.

mid: ling, walcott and son are a worry in that order. Ling to shaq is a possibility. Walcott is a punt but an expensive one. Son keeps ticking over but i could downgrade to mili and have lots of cash to upgrade.

fw: i feel ok with kane and wilson upfront. Although by downgrading son to mili i could upgrade wilson to firm. Or find finds elsewhere aswell to upgrade quaner to firmino and play 3-4-3.

Thoughts most welcome. My team has become a mishmash from a well oiled machine. After 3 months Ive finally been knocked off top spot in my ml and im getting itchy fingers to pull trigger on my wc.

Slow down and consider the more than possible blanks in 31.

You will be wanting Wally for that so deffo keep.

I would perhaps go easy for now and change Pereeya to a GW31 keeper Pickford? But if you can wait till after the next round of matches you will have much more info to base your decisions on.

If desperate to move on lingard, how about a watford mid, Deulefeo perhaps, or Doucore?

I shifted Otamendi this GW for Bauyer and alraedy regretting that move 🙁
