Dugout Discussion

Dugout Discussion – Newcastle United vs Manchester United

After Huddersfield ended Bournemouth’s seven-match unbeaten run in style, we make our way to Tyneside as Newcastle United take on Manchester United at 2.15pm.

Up against a Magpies side with just four goals in their last eight home matches, the Red Devils look well-placed to deliver a sixteenth clean sheet of the campaign.

Such resilience means that David De Gea is the third most popular player in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), with over 43% owning the United keeper.

Meanwhile, interest in Antonio Valencia is on the rise – acquired by over 113,000 last week, the raiding right-back has climbed to fourth among defenders.

Despite scoring just a single away goal since Gameweek 6, Romelu Lukaku is the fourth top captain pick for this round of fixtures and earns 10.9% backing.

Meanwhile, only 1.4% have handed the armband to Alexis Sanchez, who fired more shots (six) than any player in Gameweek 26 on the way to scoring his first league goal for Jose Mourinho’s side since arriving from Arsenal.

Elsewhere, Paul Pogba, Phil Jones and Anthony Martial all return to the teamsheet after being dropped at home to Huddersfield – the former two were transferred out by 99,000 and 97,000 FPL managers respectively ahead of Gameweek 27.

Jesse Lingard – subject to 169,000 sales last week – retains his spot in the visitors’ XI despite a run of one goal in his previous six league outings.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Even though Mkhi blanked, I'm happy I took a hit to get rid of Lingard just so that I don't have a little bit of hope when he's on the ball.

I have a low centre of gravity issue.
The plan was to do Aguero to Kane this week, but Kun has thrown a spanner in the works with his four goal masterpiece.
Still go ahead with the plan?

      still high-risk / high reward.
      Jesus return.
At least 3 games between until next PL game. If Wigan get a replay then he blanks GW28.
Own both. Think I'm still shipping Kun.
      -Still have other captaincy options
-Same as pre-Jesus injury - too expensive not to be a guaranteed starter.
-Fixture changes mean spreading the funds is more attractive.
-Think a swap for KDB is pretty appealing.

    As a half time thought..

If say Shelvey takes an indirect free kick just in United half, he over hits it and DDG collects it with ease.
Now in this case as far as i know this is not a save.
However if DDG hadn't stopped it it would have gone in.
Why is this not classed as a save? And also a shot on target for Shelvey?

Called "ball collected" by OPTA, rather than a save.

Also applies to totally mis-hit shots.

Thanks. I would say that's what is done from crosses/corners. Just seems like we're being denied gk points that could make a large difference across a season. As well as attackers SoT to help with baps.

        1. Brap.
          • 7 Years
          6 years, 2 months ago

Best not to think of it as "the ball would've gone in if the keeper wasn't there", because then every time a defender back-passes it "on target" the keeper would be "saving" it.

It used to be the case way back when that on OPTA's data collection tool (OSCA) every shot on target had only two outcomes: "saved" or "goal". This led to situations where keepers were getting credited with saves for shots so mis-hit the keeper picked up the ball with ease or even just controlled it with their feet; thus the "ball collected" event was inaugurated.

You aren't allowed to score from an indirect FK. If Dea Gea had let the ball into the goal it wouldn't count. Therefore his save would be void.

        1. Fred54
          • 9 Years
          6 years, 2 months ago

You know what I mean, can't score DIRECTLY from an Indirect FK.

A goal may not be scored directly from the kick; the ball must first come into contact with another player (from either team). If the ball goes into the goal without touching any other player, a goal kick is awarded

            • 7 Years
            6 years, 2 months ago

Does the ref decide if it's an indirect or direct free kick? What I meant was kdb has got 2 or 3 free kick goals where the kick was intended for his teammates to score but found a way in. Sorry I'm not familiar with some rules

            1. Fred54
              • 9 Years
              6 years, 2 months ago

I'm not sure what you mean by "the kick was intended for his teammates to score but found a way in" but anyway a DIRECT FK is given for a foul which is usually how the majority of FKs are won and they can be scored off.

Indirect free kick free kicks are given for technical infringements, the most common award being for offside.

Opta record the saves. FPL don't actually collect any data themselves.

Utd's main problem is the slow build up, it is linked with their strong defence however. No mistakes, but ample time for the opposition to set up.
This is stupid from Mourinho though as he has high quality players who would benefit from quicker passing.

Not really. I had Jones, he got injured and I foolishly never got him back. I daren't look but must be close to 40 points missed out on and wasted FTs on defs.

A manager number one quality should be to have the shoulders to take decisions.
That’s what you get millions for. Taking the responsibilities. For the best and the worst.

Mourinho not benching pogba just shows how bad of a manager he is imo.

Pep did bring Stones in for 50m but has the quality to recognize that it was not such a good call and does not have any problem disapproving himself in public for the sake of his team performance

I don't think the issue is benching Pogba, I think the issue is playing him in the wrong position/set up.
