Fantasy hopes pinned on Brazil against the Swiss

Brazil and Switzerland bring the curtain down on day four of the 2018 World Cup as they meet in Rostov in the evening kick-off.

The Selecao boast the three most-owned players in McDonald’s FIFA: Marcelo (£6.5m), Neymar (£12.0m) and Philippe Coutinho (£9.0m).

A whopping 44% of Fantasy managers have bought Marcelo – no player is more widely owned – who scored a goal and recorded two assists in qualification and was on target in the November friendly win over Japan.

Neymar, selected by 33% of those playing McDonald’s FIFA,  was directly involved in 15 of Brazil’s goals during World Cup qualification and has scored on a further three occasions in subsequent friendlies.

Only Paolo Guerrero (19) of Peru had more attempts from set-play situations than Neymar (16) in CONMEBOL qualifying.

The 29% of Fantasy managers who own Coutinho will be heartened by his goal in the 10 June friendly win over Austria. The Barcelona playmaker scored on four occasions and set up two goals in qualification, despite only starting eight of Brazil’s matches.

Gabriel Jesus (£9.0m), Brazil’s top goalscorer during qualification, carries the hopes of just 12% of Fantasy bosses, despite being some £3.0m cheaper than Neymar.

Switzerland’s attack-minded full-back pairing of Ricardo Rodriguez and Stephan Lichtsteiner (both £5.5m), who scored six goals between them during qualification, are owned by 2% and 1% of managers respectively.

Hopes will be high for plenty of goals in this Group E encounter: Brazil scored at a rate of 2.3 goals per match during qualification, while Switzerland scored 24 goals in 12 qualifying fixtures – an average of exactly two goals per match.

Brazil’s backline, however, is uncharacteristically mean: the Selecao have not conceded a single goal in their last five friendly internationals (despite facing the likes of Germany, Croatia and England) and their defence was the best in South American qualification (11 goals conceded in 18 fixtures).

The Selecao have a new-found strength in set-play situations, too: four of Brazil’s goals in their six most-recent friendlies were scored directly from corners.

There has already been some massive #WorldCup upsets by underdogs.

Iceland managed to grab a famous draw vs Argentina.

    Mexico outrageously defeated Germany.

Switzerland grab a shock draw vs Brazil.

England may actually have a chance to beat Tunisia.

Lewa, J. Rod. too in my team. I am a little anxious about changing because of how badly my other players flopped.

Im doing Jesus and Mueller to Ronaldo and Golovin.

Appreciate a -4 is a bit ridiculous in this format but Ronaldo will score, Brazil could easily drop Jesus after today and Mueller looked like had finally passed it at tournament level. Plus the ridiculousness of Kimmich bombing on at RB left him lost at sea. Literally dont think Kimmichs style of play is actually that helpful to his right sided players.

maybe just do Jesus to Costa and keep the 4 pts? obviously a Ronaldo hattrick is a head turner but his record in WCs prior to that was not great. You don't want to chase your tail too much.

Do you think that wildcarding for round 2(instead of RD3) might be a better move now?

Brazil, Germany, Argentina need to win the two remaining games, so they will not be resting players in rd 3. Portugal and Spain now have 2 easy games and will be battling for 1st place.

WC or Euro fantasy is ridiculous to do well at. No form til group stages are over, group games are lotteries in terms of resting, tentativity in team's approach, little knowledge of tactics or strategy of teams. Enjoy it tho along with the WC - gives you a chance to get to know the players, but not for me. Tried it a few years but too lunky and demanding and enjoying the football, just football, for once.

Bench boost is gonna be pretty useless given the in round substitutions. Pretty much guaranteed 1s and 2s

Round 4 seems ideal - unlimited transfers; form players to pick from.

Really enjoyed the impossible job documentary. They found a real gem of a cnt to represent the media, and he wasn't shy about being his horrible slug self.

The issue with England since 1996 is no togetherness. They are not a team. We have had Gerrard, Lampard, Owen, Rooney etc. and they don't sacrifice for each other. Couple that with some poor selections (we pick players who are injury doubts or right-footed left backs). I give credit to Southgate though for not selecting injury doubts (e.g Wilshere) this time. Disappointed with the Ashley Young pick though as a right-footed left-back.

Ah but Rose is an injury doubt!

I think Wilshere should be competing with Alli, Lingard, Lallana and RLC for those more attacking central midfield slot(s), but if he's being considered for defensive capacity, then I can see why he wouldn't be chosen. Still prefer him to Lingard and Alli, but that's probably contentious.

You'd think as peripheral players for their squads (or non-superstar status), they'd all be a bit more team-orientated, both now and historically. So the least I would hope for, now that expectation and quality is at it's lowest, is good performances, even if we don't go far. But to be fair, we've put in some good performances in the past, and just been unlucky.

Any word on if you can wild card and bench boost in the same round?

That’s what I’ll be going for in GW2 if I can..

I just activated my WC and the Bench Boost button is there so I think you can.
