Why I’m turning to my FPL arch-nemesis on Gameweek 5 Wildcard

Only Fantasy Premier League can push you into the arms of your arch-nemesis.

The last 10 days have produced four frustrating incidents and one harrowing Match of the Day ‘Live’ experience that have caused me to do just that.

FPL is frustrating enough when you do follow the action throughout the day on a Saturday, but ignoring it all day and cramming all those emotions into eighty-five minutes is not something I’d recommend. It’s not good for the heart. It never ends well (for me at least). Especially not when you get 33 points from nine players, including your captain.

And so the scene was set for four moments which tipped me over the edge, as anyone who follows me on Twitter will know.

1. The hope. After that shocking Saturday in Gameweek 4, it was down to my Spurs duo of Christian Eriksen and Ben Davies to save me at Watford.

2. The desperation. Eriksen manages to connect perfectly with fresh air from point blank range. And yes, I was the only person to see him get a touch on Abdoulaye Doucouré’s own-goal, but he did, I’m sure of it. Mainly because I needed him to.

3. The kick when I’m down. Okay, so maybe Eriksen didn’t touch that ball, but I’m thinking at least he’ll get a point for the clean sheet and I’ll get one for Davies too. After all, Mauricio Pochettino owed me big time, having cost me points for a Spurs’ shutout in Gameweek 3. Full-back rotation has to be listed as one of his hobbies on any social media site he’s signed up to, I’m sure. But, of course, Watford equalise. Despair.

4. Salt in the wound. Just when I was starting to get over my FPL depression, Eriksen went and scored twice for Denmark against Wales, fittingly.

Four moments which sum up my FPL season so far. It’s been painful to say the least but I’m relishing the challenge of fighting back over the coming weeks and months.
Desperate times call for desperate measures. My Wildcard was activated quicker than Poch could rotate a full-back.

With Gameweek 5 just around the corner and a shiny new squad almost ready for battle, it’s time for me to stop moaning about the opening four rounds and prepare for a major assault on those ahead of me in the rankings.

The man I’m trusting to lead my troops into battle is my old foe Eden Hazard. For those who didn’t follow me on Twitter last season, here’s what happened.

Before I owned the Chelsea man he registered 56 points between Gameweeks 10 and 15, an average of 9.33 per match.

After I brought him into the fold he blanked in five of his next six. So I thought it would make sense to get him out on my Free Hit squad for Gameweek 22, where he promptly punished me with a 10-point haul.

Of course he scored just one point when he returned in Gameweek 23.

Christian Eriksen has nothing on this guy.

I try not to be stubborn with FPL. I avoid holding grudges for too long. With each new season, I see it as a fresh start for all players no matter how much pain they have caused me in previous campaigns.

I’ve been very impressed watching Hazard in recent weeks under Sarri. He was one of the main reasons for me activating the Wildcard. He’s returned attacking points in all four Gameweeks, despite starting in just two of them. With Cardiff, West Ham and Southampton in his next four, I’m banking on him to fire me up the rankings. I like the fact that he’s on penalties as well.

But remember that could all count for nothing against his biggest flaw: he’s now back in my squad. Apologies in advance to all those who own him or are getting him in this week.

Hazard’s team mate Marcos Alonso was another player who factored in my Wildcard activation. I can’t watch another Chelsea match without owning one of my all-time favourite FPL players. He’s flourishing in Sarri’s system, with a goal and five assists to his name already. It’s amazing to think he only managed two FPL assists last season.

In fact, I’m all in on Chelsea on Wildcard. I may even triple up by holding on to Pedro for another couple of weeks with a view to moving him on for Richarlison when he returns from suspension.

Elsewhere, I’m leaning towards #NoSalah. I say leaning towards as it’s probably about 60:40 in Mané’s favour as I write this, but it’s a huge decision to have to make so early in the season and one I’ll be mulling over until Saturday morning. I can’t help but love the team I can get without Mo. The issue is getting him back in later won’t be easy.

From the eye test this season (which is always number one factor for me when considering players) I’ve been very impressed by Mané and I see no reason why he can’t match or even better Salah’s points over the next few weeks. I don’t want to own both during Liverpool’s tough fixture schedule.

I’m likely to be doing the Match of the Day ‘Live’ challenge again this Saturday as I’ll be out and about during the day so hopefully it’s a more enjoyable watch this time around. Keep me in your thoughts if you know I’ve had a low-scoring Saturday before I do.

Good luck to all in Gameweek 5. May your arrow be green.

Really like this article of fplgeneral's team .It's similar to Mark's preamble which is my favorite article

Said the same thing on last page, although I’m very bored by seeing even experienced FPL pundits using the “I bought him now, so sorry he isn’t going to score anymore” cliché...

"Several weeks" so I'd estimate that meaning HL back after next international break. Otherwise they'd be dealing in months.

FPL general is clutching at thin air with his reasoning

think if you write an article then it's got to be advice/news rather than an uninspired diary of how you play FPL and self-promoting

      I actually disagree.
Enjoyed the article - reminded me a bit of Mark’s preamble. Sometimes it’s nice to have something with a personal touch instead of purely stats 🙂

perhaps but I don't want to follow someone else's way of playing the game and how he copes with stuff

personally I like to review stats and news and make my own interpretations because if you take too much of a single-person's 'advice' (or in this case emotional reasoning) then it feels like spoon-feeding

But I don’t think the intention at all was for this to be a “tips and hints” article.
I think it was meant as an entertaining entry and a look into the mind of a well respected manager - an how irrational thoughts he can have as well.
It’s one article among the countless others that provide what you are searching for ..

I don't respect FPL 'experts' though

it's hard to interpret reasoning for their team and thoughts into your own team because everyone thinks so differently

            if that makes sense

I don’t really get it no.
As said above, I don’t think this article is meant to necessarily have any concrete advice on how to improve your team...
An entertaining post about his experience with hazard and gives an impression on when he deemed it necessary to WC.

I must have read it very differently

you just can't learn anything from a past player's virtual stats, in football some stats are always changing

new manager, new season, who knows what's gonna happen ? what are we learning from someone's experiences in the past with a fantasy football player ?

I'd accept it if the article was funny, witty or cleverly-written but he's too self-absorbed with a virtual team and I am scared for him

You are missing my point completely.
The article isn’t meant as FPL advice.
Never mind. We all prefer different stuff 🙂

Many o eople on here, myself included, have been saying that we really miss the preamble article.
It was even more personal and COMPLETELY without relevance for any FPL manager looking to improve his team.
This was kind of in the same style.

I agree that it wasn’t the level of the preamble. On the last page I also criticized the article for feeling the need to use one of the most tiresome cliches of the FPL community.
That being said, I still think it is nice that they are experiementing with different kinds of articles - especially given the fact that we get A LOT more articles this year.

Bettinelli rotates well with Patricio up until GW 12 . Worth keeping him instead of Hamer in my WC if it means using Højbjerg as fodder instead of Billing?

Hate rotating keepers as it's so hard to pick the right one/inevitably leave points OTB, but decent rotation yeah. you could prob get away with Patricio + 4.0 and bank cash

            A) Robertson > Alonso for free
            B) Duffy + Walcott > Alonso + Hojbjerg (-4)
            C) Bilva + Robertson > Hazard + Bennett (-4)

Plan is to do one of B or C this week then do the other next week but not sure which to do first. Would leave me with this going into GW 6

Didn't really answer the question of "why he's turning to his arch-nemesis Hazard" tbh.

I'm thinking of doing Mhki, Walcott -> Madisson, Richarlison

I know it's a week early for Richarlison but there are other transfers I want too next game week (Haz, Mitrovic), so just getting it out of the way, thoughts?

No offense, but it is completely pointless selling Mkhi/Walcott who might play and score for Richarlison, who definitely won’t play...

Not really convinced by Maddison, but transfers certainly look an improvement on current state of play.

                WC team:

                A.
                Patricio (Hamer)
Alonso, Mendy, Pereira (Wan Bissaka, Bennett)
                D.Silva, Salah, Hazard, Pedro, Neves
                Aguero, Wilson (Success)

Pedro is short term and will be replaced with Richarlison

                B.
                Same defence
                Salah, Mane, Hazard, Neves (Hojberg)
                Aguero, Wilson, Ings

                So basically it's between

                A. Mané and Ings
                B. D.Silva and Pedro

I had the same thoughts. Tricky thing is getting him in, you have to pick him over the obvious premium options or the value options which look good this seasomseason.

I'm probably going to WC and I plan to bring in Richarlison next week.

I have 6.7m to spend on a mid that I'll only start this GW, who will then be transferred to Richarlison next week.

Who do you back as a one-week punt under 6.8M?

                  A) Jota vs BUR
                  B) Pereyra vs MUN
                  C) Maddison vs bou (In this case I could keep him in the long term and get rid of Pedro for Richarlison instead next week)
                  D) Elyounoussi vs BHA
                  E) Someone else?

Traore a real maverick pick, one I'll consider but his gametime isn't guaranteed.
Maddison seems like a boring pick, and Bournemouth's defence has been relatively solid this season.

RP, bottomed on the previous article :
I hope to phrase it correctly. It is questions about eye test to back up the good stats.
If I have the opportunity to watch a live match and some of the relatively new player to me is playing. One attribute that I always put on top of my eye test criteria which is the "first touch" above many important attributes.
To put it simple I am talking about Lucas Moura who I have from the GW1. I watched two Spurs matches so far and he's out for me.
I have been trying to transfer him out so far but he's been (and of course myself too) lucky that I have bigger problem (and he has relatively easy fixtures) each previous GW.
Am I being ridiculous to transfer him out this week to provide me a route to bring Hazard after those points?
and if you are asked to pick one attribute that is very important to you to pass the eye test what will it be?

I assume that you are talking about the attribute instead of my hunger of points 😀 hence a trigger happy type of player is your favorite

                                      Fear.

You can often tell how good a player is dependent upon how the opposition defend against them.

I got rid after GW2 - if I were you I'd keep until he actually doesn't start

I'd be looking to swap him to Richarlison/Ramsey in a week or two probably

Thanks TWE, Berb, Sadio & MT. Well the Lucky Lucas will stay another week then.
VVD & Bilva to Alonso and 5.5 Mid seems as my next move

I would prefer B but there are better options - Zaha to Wilson doubling up on Bournemouth strikers perhaps - certainly Pedro

It is the guys that give out on match days saying they got bad advice on here that makes me chuckle.

                                    Fabianski (Foster)
                                    Mendy, Robertson, Obi-Wan (Shaw*, Peltier)
                                    Salah, Pedro, Mahrez, Walcott* (Hudson-Odoi)
                                    Firmino, Aguero, Ings

                                    0,3 ITB.

Was looking to replace Mahrez, but now that Shaw and Walcott looks to be ruled out I am looking to replace Walcott instead. However, I could also get Hazard or David Silva for a hit though.

                                    A) Walcott > 6.9 (most likely Maddison or Mkhi)
                                    B) Mahrez & Walcott > Hazard & Kennedy (or other 5.0 midfielder) -4
                                    C) Mahrez & Walcott > D. Silva & Maddison/Mkhi -4
