Captains

Vote in the Captain Poll for FPL Gameweek 13

Voting in the Gameweek 13 captain poll has now opened, with this weekend’s set of matches perhaps not offering one glaringly obvious candidate for the armband.

With Sergio Aguero (£11.4m) and Mohamed Salah‘s (£13.0m) home and away fixtures dovetailing nicely until this point, those who like to play it safe with their captaincy picks have had a fairly easy ride for the first three months of the season.

Manchester City and Liverpool are both away from home in the same weekend for the first time in 2018/19 however, and while West Ham United and Watford aren’t overly formidable opposition, the fixtures are potentially tricky enough to make us consider other alternatives for the captaincy.

Aguero’s indifferent form away from home is well-documented, with the Argentinean striker having registered only one attacking return (a goal at Cardiff City in Gameweek 6) in five appearances on the road this season.

What should be noted, though, is that four of those five away fixtures were against Arsenal, Wolves, Liverpool and Spurs.

Salah meanwhile is yet to register an attacking return in five appearances against the clubs currently sitting in the top half of the Premier League table but did of course score four goals against the Hornets (at Anfield) in March.

Raheem Sterling (£11.2m) and Sadio Mane (£9.9m) are two very viable armband alternatives from the two title-chasing clubs.

Sterling has featured in all five of City’s away fixtures this season and is averaging more FPL points than Aguero (4.8 versus 2.6) on the road.

Mane is doing likewise compared to Salah, averaging 5.0 points in away matches compared to the Egyptian’s 4.12.

The Senegalese midfielder has blanked in six of his last seven Premier League starts, however.

A home fixture against Cardiff City has seen Richarlison (£6.9m) take an early lead in our poll, with the Brazilian midfielder seemingly set to continue “out of position” up front against the Bluebirds and having plundered 15 points in his last home league game.

Injury doubts and yellow flags still cloud our judgement of several captaincy candidates, with Anthony Martial‘s (£7.6m) availability for the weekend still in question after he pulled out of the France squad with a thigh injury.

Martial is certainly FPL’s form player: the French midfielder has scored on six occasions and registered an assist in his last five Premier League starts.

Crystal Palace, United’s opponents this weekend, haven’t won a league match since Gameweek 5.

Glenn Murray (£6.6m) and Raul Jimenez (£5.8m) are two cut-price forwards who enjoy an appealing home fixture in Gameweek 13 and would be “sensible” differential picks in such a wide-open Gameweek, while the true mavericks among us may even be eyeing up Matt Doherty (£4.9m) – if fit – given that the league’s lowest goalscorers, Huddersfield Town, visit Molineux on Sunday.

Joe and I discuss the various captaincy options for Gameweek 13 in the video below, with our regular “Captain Sensible” members’ piece to follow later in the week.

    Alonso Doherty Mendy Cook AWB

Mendy to anyone for a hit? Otherwise I have to play Cook v Arsenal and will have to sell Mendy next week anyway when I'm sure to have something else that needs doing 😕

Cheers, well he hasn't any attacking points since gw2 and I don't expect a clean sheet. Problem is there will something else I need to do next week, there always is and I will be in the same boat. Thinking best to get it over with now

Everything is set up for a successful captaincy punt this week with all the usual suspects playing away & or having a tough fixture plus there being the factor of champions league midweek to consider too. Martial has a good fixture v Palace at home and Richarlison has a great fixture v Cardiff at home. I think Richarlison has the better chance of a haul so I'd veer towards him.

True. Any week where the top EO’d player is sub 120% is decent, especially when the next highest will be 80/90%.

      Would expect Kun to be 120 (30) Salah 80 (20) Haz 95 (5) Rich 90 (30). Captaincy in brackets.

This is an important GW for the captaincy and therefore OR. It is these GWs that can propel or hurt your OR when there is no 'safe' / standout option. A number of potential options:

Salah (wat) - Non-Top 6 opponent, but away from home
Aguero (whu) - Non-Top 6 opponent, but away from home
Lacazette (bou) - Non-Top 6 opponent, but away from home
Richarlison (CAR) - can he be trusted?
Jimenez (HUD) - can he be trusted?
Martial (CPL) - plum fixture, but still relatively low ownership

I just think the fact that Salah play so far forward literally on the defenders shoulder, literally swing it over Aguero due to that extra goal point plus Clesn sheet bonus

I don't think Watford are tough opposition, sure they had the game against a sub standard Spurs but Utd in no great form put 2 past them at home and bournemouth battered them. My captaincy goes to Salah.

The fact that Aguero may get reduced mins further limits his appeal.

Don't think I'm brave enough to go for Rich

Hopefully Salah 8 points ticks the GW over.

Time and time again we see in-form players choke on easy fixtures like CAR as they struggle to break down a parked bus.

Liverpool's attack was very reliable last season, but seem to be stuttering slightly this year. I'm still not completely comfortable with Salah.

However, I can't see a more consistent team than Man City atm. No matter how deep and defensive an opponent plays, they always seem to carve them open. And there are few players that have been more consistent in the Premier League than Aguero.

Every captain choice is essentially a differential this week. But for me, it's Aguero(C) this week. Upsets happen often, so consistency is key.

I am yet to get my head around whether Salah is value at 13m or not. For all of his bad press, he is still the 5th highest point scorer this season behind Alonso, Hazard, Aguero and Sterling. He is yet to "explode" but as we all now this explosiveness is within him (I am mindful Kane too has this ability) and feel I would be more hurt that I didn't have him in my team when he does do this and this is perhaps why I will be captaining him this week again.

I agree with what you're saying and if I were betting on a team it'd definitely be City. Problem is Salah and Richarlison are probably more likely to be involved in any goals than Aguero. On top of that, Salah and Richarlison get an extra point for every goal and one for a clean sheet. All of that said, I'm going Aguero(c), but it's definitely a tricky one this week.

Agreed. There's no way I'm captaining Richarlison. Cardiff have improved recently and even if Everton do put 2 or 3 passed them Richarlison could still blank like he did in the 3-0 win over Fulham. It's between Salah and Aguero for me. Fixture difficulty looks pretty similar between those two but City are the better attacking team so I'm going with Aguero.

I literally can't fathom where this Digne love is coming from

If you were so inclined to bring in an Everton defender surely Keane with 2 assists and a goal is the better option at .1 more. More baps too.

And for what 3 home games and 3 shitty games against top 4 opposition

personally i'm likely to get on board the Digne train and that comes from watching him.

He's attacking, has some good fixtures as you say and can be rotated for the bad ones, and takes corners. With Mina and Keane up for corners has a chance to nick an assist or two maybe.

Can cut it whatever way you want it, but personally from the eye test he looks a good prospect

Digne has better stats. Also, Everton defenders rotate perfectly with Wolves around their tough fixtures - at his price I'm comfortable not playing him every week.

Hadn't seen this on the rotation front - good to know

    G2G?

    Patricio (Hart)

Robertson / Alonso / Laporte (Cook / WanB)

    Richarlison / Anderson / D Silva / Salah (c)

    Aguero / Arni / Wilson

Not convinced by Richi to give him the armband, is it worth the risk? Thanks in advance

    Anyone considering Sane this week?

On form, Mendy out so Pep is relatively likely to bring Sane back into the fold for the next few games. And he is cheaper than Sterling.

yep i'm very tempted to bring in Sane and start to go four in midfield again.
