    Ryan - Stekelenburg
    AWB - Robertson - Alonso - Yedlin - Doherty
    Hazard - Salah - Richarlison - Fraser - Masuaku
    Agüero - Arnautovic - Wilson

    2 FT - 0.2 ITB

What would be your priorities? Get rid of BOU assets? Better bench fodder than Masuaku? Something else?

    Thanks!

Siggy is outperforming Richarlison & Hazard to a Spurs mid could free up some cash next week.

Player Value Accumulation, that is 🙂

Hoarding value in players like Aguero and Hazard could well be the undoing of many this season, including myself.

We've already seen how high profile alternatives such as Sterling can destroy Hazard over a short period of injury and recovery.

Perhaps early Mané adopters may have found parting ways less troublesome, Sadio having never truly received the community's 'Essential' status badge.

Blindly holding onto Mendy rather than side stepping onto the likes of Trippier, Laporte or Doherty has also set me back this season..

Where do you think you 'could' have done better in this respect? Are we too careful about hoarding value accrued?

It's ironic - I was so quick to sell the likes of Sterling and Salah after rotation and injury last season in spite of value accrued - almost reckless in fact - that this season I've consciously tried not to move away from players where I imagine I'll want to return in the future.

The difference this season is the sheer number of premium assets. It was quite feasible to own multiple last season when the likes of Sterling and Salah were valued at 8-9m.

This season we must make the difficult choices, or be prepared to fall backwards.

I agree with what you are saying. I think this season managers need to be more nimble. I sold off Aguero for Sterling and he's been a great buy so far. Although holding onto some players is also important like I held onto Laca from the start and he paid dividends. Likewise, Fraser.

I’m weighing up whether to bring Hazard back, I took him out for a hit for -4 with Mane for Fulham/Watford.. I lost 0.3 on Hazard, but now Hazard could possibly drop to 11m.. My big move is whether to get him back as planned for Fulham or go for a long term strategy and go with sterling..

You'd think not but he's the highest sold player since yesterdays first update. Plenty of folk are 'what have you done for me lately' when it comes to FPL. Plenty jumping onto Sterling.

True. I've held Mane for way too long and ignored Sterling. Corrected that mistake yesterday by doing the swap before being priced out. Mane has Everton and Utd at home and 3 away fixtures in the next 5. I don't expect him to hurt non owners much and I won't be captaining him in any of these games. City have 3 of the next 5 at home and they will probably score 15 or more goals over the next 5 GWs. I will captain Sterling at least twice over that period.

Plus Sterling will be 11.4 or more before next GW and Mane will drop once. The 0.2 I lost on Mane will be recovered easily by Sterling.

Made the same mistake with Mendy earlier in the season. Lets see who the BOU lads do today. Loss of value is one of the reasons i'm holding on to them, but thinking I am going to have to get rid of them to enable me to bring in the spurs boys (Eriksen, Alli, Son) and Arsenal forwards from GW15 onwards.

I wrote a lengthy post here about Sterling in game week 8 dissecting the case for Sterling as essential and as a player matching and even potentially outscoring Aguero. I drafted him in and he got benched. The following week he had to go because of the whole LIV v FUL affair. I never got him back in and have missed his 6, 21, 2, 16.

So I guess the moral of this story is take your own bloody advice

Hazard's about as nailed an option as any I can conceive given his upcoming fixtures. Sterling's still a rotation risk. Dropping Aguero to accommodate him seems a no brainer by comparison.

Ha, I thought this was a post about PVA from Palace! Had 2 big chances yesterday and looks like a great differential over the next 4.

This is a great post and it is exactly what has gone wrong for me this season. But for me it's not so much about losing value but with rather being patient with players, which everyone says you have to do to be successful at FPL. Be patient.

        There is a line though.

You have to be patient but you also need to know when to let certain players go.

That’s where I am at the moment with Aguero, Salah and Hazard. Aguero and Salah can be replaced with Mané and Sterling easily enough.

Haz is the difficult one because there is no direct replacement.

In all honesty, though, he’s probably the most expendable as he’s probably gone in the summer anyway and unless he plays well (preferably with Giroud up front) Chelsea don’t tend to do that well.

Players aquire value for a reason as they are performing superior to the average assets. Clearly they are the best options.. the time to jump of if/when is such a dilemma.. I would rather a proven asset over a prospect, however, I also value fixtures

This for me is the most difficult issue to get right in FPL. Because the truth is, both approaches can work. Getting players at their lowest prices means you are extracting more value from them than later adopters, and also leave yourself more cash available to work on other areas of your squad. Great. Problem is, how the hell are we supposed to know whether players are season keepers or not at the point when we first purchase them? How do we know we won't want them back in our teams in the future? We don't. Therefore I think it comes back to the old theories of play the fixtures, look at the stats in context, exercise your judgement and don't be too stubborn on getting players back in you previously owned at a higher price

      1. The Rumour Mill

I think it also depends what sort of manager you are. From what ive observed of their play styles joe (the artist formerly known as Jonty) and mark are 2 good differing examples. Joe seems to prefer a "value" based approach, where he gets players in after 2 or 3 weeks of form with good fixtures to come, and leaves them in there for long periods, only moving them on if they really drop off a cliff in performance/injury and if the fixtures turn substantially for the worse. This means he can leave players ticking along and focus the relatively few transfers he makes on obvious high priority areas in his squad. He achieves good value for money across his squad this way, it leads to low variance in scores (never too good or too bad) and a slow and steady progression up the ranks most seasons.

Mark is the opposite. He jumps on players more readily after showing perhaps only a weeks worth of form, or perhaps without even that if they instead have particularly attractive fixtures, taking hits if necessary. He gets players often at their lowest price and therefore achieves value for money in that manner, but is quick to move them on if they start to drop off in stats and bring in a new player showing a bit of form. You end up playing this way with high varience in scores (I think mark had 3 weeks of scores: 24, 104, 44) and much greater swings in rank through the season.

You cansee from their rank history that both approaches have merit. More than one way to skin a cat basically. Playing to your strengths and in a way you feel comfortable with will lead you to good ranks I believe. But to win FPL, I think you need to be flexible enough a manager to be able to combine the styles and play in the way that suits that point in the season, at the right time.

Totally agree with you on both points here. Being the kind of person who likes to continually develop myself and take a holistic (sorry to people who don't like that word!) approach to things, I simply want to make the moves that generate the most points and am happy to test various ideas and make mistakes in order to improve. I'm not interested in sticking to one particular strategy just to make me feel comfortable or excited, or get a "safe" rank.

It's interesting being new to FPL and observe the strategies and mindsets of people that have done this for 10+ years, and compare them with newbies and try to work out the strengths/weaknesses of both. It was clear to me that i wanted Sterling more than Aguero from about GW4 yet I never made that move, whereas Mark just did it. Ironically he probably doesn't get swayed by this site to avoid such moves, and it reminds to prioritise key transfers like this rather than wasting transfers on moving budget players around when it's less likely to make a difference long term.

Cheers 🙂 Yeah I agree, I've been playing this game for 8 years, but the first 5-6 were as a casual. The last 3 years I've learnt an incredible amount about the game, what works and what doesn't, still so much to learn aswell!

I think your last sentence is spot on here. Ville Ronka also uses this strategy and frequently lets his bench rot completely, just focussing on the core of his team and ensuring he has the best heavy hitters in at any one time. If you think about it a 4.5m defender only needs to score about 15 points over 5 weeks to justify his place in the team. Thats only one clean sheet in 5 required! So you can just leave these guys alone really unless injury forces your hand. Premium players have to do a lot more to deliver value, so I believe this is where transfers should be focussed.

Right now its looking quite interesting as Hazard is emphatically not delivering at the moment and after Fulham i don't think I'd captain him in the following 5 weeks either. So he's probabaly not got much chance of delivering value over that period. Its a similar story with Salah after GW15 as he has to do even more at 13m to justify his cost. So I'm eying up these guys leaving my team and Sane and a Spurs midfielder coming in, high cost players in form and with good fixtures to come. The money saved could upgrade Murphy to a second spurs mid/Martial/Richarlison, whoever really.

That's something I've just started to appreciate more than ever. Recently I've been of the mindset that I don't need to waste transfers on my premium players who are obviously dependable (Aguero, Salah etc), and focus on the budget players who are more volatile and set you apart from the pack. So that's what i did and Sterling is damaging my rank, and he's less of a differential. The rest of the team is important but like you say, primarily you need the right core players. Too many people are still holding Salah or Aguero over Sterling imo.

My plans are similar to yours: salah out, sterling in. Sane in as well. There's no way I'm moving Hazard on, there's too many good things going for him even if he has a few mediocre performances.

Meant to say my restructure might also involve bringing in a Spurs mid or Martial if he remains the Utd talisman. Looking at various options.

Yeah its tough because you'll get plenty of people, including some top managers like those on Joe's meet the manager series saying making your team as value for money as possible is key to success in FPL, ans while important, just as important is when to jump off these guys onto new options. It would be good to hear in some of the interviews Joe questioning them on when they decide to do that, i.e. what is the tipping point?

Salah has been great as an FPL asset this season so far, he's predictable. Against poor to middling sides he gets his goal every time and is a reliable captain option. Against good sides he blanks. Makes shifting him in and out your side according to fixture runs quite safe (thus far at least). Its unpredictable trolls like Kane I can't stand.

I'm pleased to have had Sterling in my team since GW9, so Sane would be joining him as a powerful double up 🙂 I'll be watching Hazards injury reports with interest this week, plus seeing who plays in the europa league on thursday. If Morata plays in the Europa and Hazard is ruled fit then he will probably be my captain this weekend....if either of those events don't happen then he may well be out my squad.

Yeah stay flexible for now, its about to get even more interesting with the fixture congestion approaching!

Totally agree with you here about Sterling over Aguero, i went this way 3-4 weeks back just from my instinct whilst watching the games so 'the eye test'

The same way i understand not to drop hazard since the last 2-3 games he has just been unlucky through slight niggles and almost returned/shouldve returned more than he did ...again passed 'the eye test'

I watched spurs v chelsea on saturday and thought there is one player on the pitch i have to have in because of his directness and opportunities he is getting into...and that was Son, i brought him in yesterday for Mane. (keeping faith that liverpool havet realyl passed the eye test too much recently and fixtures are getting harder)

for me its all about the eye test and watching the games

I tend to be a bit closer to Marks style since i believe that once a player passes the eye test you just have to get him in. without or even with a hit....i'm now up to 400k now and i hope making these changes will take me further up the OR. trying to squeeze aubamayang in next.

Great post, I held onto Hazard three weeks ago rather than moving to sterling because I had 0.6m tied up in him. Now it will cost me 0.3m more to make the move and I'm down 30+ pts. I'll hold him for Fulham now, but it's a case of damage mitigation.

Ha gutted was hoping this was analysis supporting getting PVA in for his plum run of fixtures - defo passed the eye test on MOTD last night, looked the most dangerous player on the pitch - a bit more composure and he could have had a mega haul! One of my all time FPL fav players always v exciting to own - still get misty eyed thinking about his incredible run of 4 goals in 4 game weeks back in Jan 2016! All was quiet on New Year’s Day...til he thundered in a screamer against villa! Then he went to white hart lane and fired in a beauty, another belter followed against Bournemouth and then the creme de la resistance, a mammoth 11pt haul away as the swans were put to the sword - just revising this as 100% my favourite FPL player ever - bye bye Ben chilwell in comes PVA for me!

Humble brag. I decided to WC this week to get in Sterling and and revamp my Defense and it paid dividends. My line of thought was i would still have 2FT to get in the Tottenham boys for gw15 and i would beat the curve. Managed to avoid the drop on Hazard too.

The only one I would remove to be honest is Aguero and boost your mids to at least 3 premium players. The only way I moved up massively in my rank is by doing just that.
Aguero is consistent but just does not do enough to move you up the table because of high ownership and he only had one very big haul....I don’t think he is worth his price tag as it stands.

I would say Arnie unless his knee injuries keep giving him problems. You could also go for Rondon too just because their good run of fixtures. I was thinking that if I see Arnie struggling with his recurrent injuries.
The tough one would be to remove someone from Martial and Richarlison for Sterling.
I don’t own Salah anymore and kept with Mane instead so that helped me too.

Been my worst week of fantasy football this year. That will see me finish just outside the top 100k bad decision captaining Richarlison but we live and learn.

Anyway I'm aiming to rebound strongly with this team I think I'm close to this being a season keeper:

    Ederson (Fabianski)

    Alonso Robertson Alexander-Arnold (Doherty) (Wan-Bissaka)

    Sterling Hazard Mane Fraser (Hudson-Odoi)

    Aguero Arnautovic (Kamara)

Only moves I'm really considering now are Fabianski to Hamer and that will give me the cash to fund Hudson-Odoi and Kamara to Stephens and Success respectively so I have two better bench options what do you think?

Jeez - that was unbelievable yesterday. I watch and think this is what the guys literally does everyday and gets paid to do, and he can't even stay onside. It obviously because he doesn't have the confidence to out-sprint or out dribble defenders.

Yep. And when he's got his back to goal and required to get his hands dirty with some hold up play he's on the floor after the slightest bit of contact. They massively miss Costa. Not sure how long Tammy Abraham is out on loan for but he has pace and can finish, probably not starting calibre but.

I think they need more than a forward. Their midfield seems to be in a mess too with Kante wasted up front and indecision about whether Willian / Pedro / Barclay should start.

Perhaps - but they actually have pretty decent mids. I think a big part of the problem is that a really dangerous forward creates space for the mids because the defenders know they can't ignore him, and Chelsea just don't have that type of forward at the moment.

Will Shaqiri start? Or transfer out for Bilva/ Martial (-4)??
Or Play Yedlin(WHM) And bench shaq?

If you can afford to wait, I'd wait but if not probably take out Martial. I like his fixture next week but Richarlison is a GTD starter.

People seem to be interested in sane before D. Silva but is it justified with silva being the cheaper of the two?

I made my transfers too early last week, otherwise I would have bought in Sane instead of D.Silva. I'm now also very interested in Delph at 5.3.

Just worked out I've take a ridiculous 52 points in hits so far this year and I'm still 6k with 3 players to play today. It does make me wonder where I'd be if I hadn't taken so many. Looking at it, I reckon I'd be lower than what I am now which is crazy!

Well timed hits with a pinch of luck can pay off.

It’s been a very high scoring year so far so. If you are using hits to bring in players like Sterling, Haz, Richarlison, etc., at the right times then it’s likely to pay off. Crucially, timing is key.

Yeah I think it is a bit of luck and also this community helps a lot.

The only one that didn't work out was when I took out Richarlison instead of Maddison to get Mendy. Probably cost me about 30 points.

Which city/spurs players are people bringing in for the Christmas run?

Is it possible to have a good mix with salah and hazard still in your team?

Trippier & Kane from Spurs, then Sterling & Ederson from City but will do Mane to Sane when Liverpool’s Fixtures turn rough, so will have a triple up
