Meet the Manager #15 – Pete Beswick

Pete Beswick is having a remarkable season, thanks largely to a maverick deployment of his second wildcard back in mid January.

After being in the top 1,000 the previous month he was on the verge of drifting out out of the top 5,000 at the start of the year.

Undaunted by the knowledge that many FPL managers would Wildcard later in the campaign, and driven by an ambition to finish as high as he could, he ploughed on with his alternative chip strategy.

It proved to be an incredible success taking him to around the top 100 mark.

During this latest Meet the Manager episode Pete explains his strategies for success in recent seasons, which also feature three top 5,000 finishes in his previous four campaigns.

An unwavering loyalty to players, who have handed him prolific points hauls over the years, has been a key factor.

Even as recently as this week such loyalty was rewarded when Paul Pogba, handed Pete attacking returns for the first time since Gameweek 28.

Pete also explains how a move away from his loyal approach cost him dearly in 2016/17 and how that poor campaign has taught him not to panic when a Gameweek goes array.

The chat with Pete is available to view on Youtube here and in the embedded video below.

It is also available on Soundcloud and as a podcast. Embedded versions of these are also available below.

During the summer break we plan to release podcast versions of all the previous Meet the Manager video interviews, which can be found here:

So what’s up with Deeney. No appeal and drop right?

BB with 0.8 ITB, 2 FT. Considering Vardy, King, McNeil & Azpilicueta -> Jimenez (C), Lacazette, Redmond and Doherty (-8). Would leave me with this:

    Fabianski, Ryan*
    Duffy*, Kolasinac*, Doherty*, Bednarek*, Robertson
    Son*, Eriksen*, Redmond*, Mane, Salah
    Jimenez*, Lacazette*, Wilson

Any other suggestions please? Keen to get Jimenez and Lacazette in and I need Redmond and Doherty to fund the transfers.

    Cheers.

You bloody legend. Already @ you twice to say thanks. Went to Kazemir Gardens and has the best beer I’ve ever had. It really is a Ake drinking city. The lager I had had to be sent back in each pub I went as they stank of egg.
Believe it or not I actually quite liked the Grapes. Went upstairs and drank outside.
        Love you for this mate.

Like to drop deep and play as a second CM and create overloads in the middle of the park. His hard work and vision provides the platform for the wide players in Salah and Mane to shine.
Sometimes plays as a no. 10 behind Salah as CF.
Does like to get his head on decent crosses though, so still a threat. Just prefer Mane/Salah to him in terms of FPL.

when too BB these 4. all else being equal i.e. just worry about these 4.

    35: Ryan, Duffy, Dunk (wol/tot) & JWP (new/wat)
36: Ryan, Duffy, Dunk (NEW) & JWP (BOU)

leaning 36, use TC in 35 & have JWP 1st sub in case of injury/missing player

Not sure about GKs, Dunk, Doherty. Otherwise good team.

Structure wise I think there is an issue with Fraser as 8th attacking player. You wont be able to use him this week as other have DGW, so you can downgrade and use the cash to upgrade defender

      1. M.I.A.
        • 12 Years
        5 years, 1 month ago

Yeah GK definitely need changing. I'll ship Dunk too but happy with Doherty unless the money could be used elsewhere.

Yeah I got stung with Fraser on the bench this week 🙁

My other thought was to bring in Mane instead of Eriksen.

Deeney the only sensible move? Nothing worth a hit, correct?

    Ryan, Foster
    Robbo, Laporte, Doherty, Duffy, Valery
    Sterling, Mané, Son, Jota, JWP
    Aguero, Jiménez, Deeney

    1. TheDragon

Same position as me - depends who you can get for Deeney - might be worth a -4 if you can get rid of Brighton defender and it enables you to make Deeney into someone decent

Ideally, I'd like a DGW-er, but Laca is probably the best bet there. The problem is the hit would have to involve a higher-priced player. Unless I try to get Rashford, but that might be too much of a gamble.

As long as City and Pool are going back and forth, I'd guess Klopp plays everyone.

The Liverpool players can recover in the 3 full days between games. Nice even spread of fixtures and breaks. Unlike Arsenal for example

    Dwight McNeil and David Brooks

Do we reckon an England call up soon for both.

Brooks to join up with his pal Josh King at international level?

In all seriousness, Two young stars and will both be in my FPL plans next year.

Agree, defnitely one for the future. But Brooks is Welsh, isn't he?

FPL plans, if they stay in the 5.5m range, then yes, one of em is in my squad.

I hope they stay down at 5 -5.5m

Yes Brooks is Welsh and despite the rumours on here King is Norwegian not English. Lol

Brooks born Warrington but committed and capped by Wales as his mum is from Llangollen.

    Really struggling with this one:

    A) Bilva to Salah for a -4 or
    B) Wait until GW36 and do it for free

    Thank you!!

With a bench of Ryan Duffy Valery Deeney, think I might save my BB this week

You could improve your bench by starting them all?

You must be fine with Brighton though as you knew this was happening. Valery was only cramp. And deeney you can swap out. Surely it's as on as it was when you set up your wc?

    Predictions:

    Barcelona 3-0 Manchester United (Messi 54', 60', Dembélé 84')
    Juventus 4-2 Ajax (Ronaldo 5', 33', 81', 88' / Ziyech 56', Tadic 67')
    Brighton 1-1 Cardiff (Duffy 45' / Dunk O.G 72')

With my luck, Dunk OG probably confirmed xD

As long as Duffy doesn't get himself sent off tonight I should be on for a ninth straight green arrow. Clearly an indicator of how poorly I was doing ten weeks ago but very pleased. How is everyone else's streak going?

I’ve managed a run of 5 and another of 4 this season but generally 1 step forward, another step forward, 2 steps back and treading water all season

    Deeney to

    A. Long
    B. Success
    C. 6.5m striker but means I have to take a hit the following week

Who is the hut for, nuno? Don't fancy a or b. Can you take the hit now?

A or B means I can go straight from Duffy to VVD next week

C means I'd downgrade the striker to Quaner and bring in Robertson for a hit

You'd want Long-term Success for your team :0

But seriously, I'd go Long in this case.
