Why it’s hard to trust Arsenal assets in 2019/20

Despite finishing as the top-scoring forward in 2018/19, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) is not expected to be a popular choice at the start of this new campaign.

In this first article of the Numbers Game series, we take a deep dive into virtually every statistic recorded by Arsenal in their first year under Unai Emery to assess their potential for 2019/20.

We will be producing one of these for each FPL side that competed in the Premier League last season between now and Gameweek 1.

As this uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members area, only those signed up for 2019/20 can view the article.

On a serious note, I do feel I am close to having THE team I think I'll be happy with.

Maybe 1-2 changes here, but I can sense being close to having the team

On a serious note. Most on here will have a spine consisting mostly of:

Robbo,TAA, Vvd, Digne, Laporte, Salah, Sterling, King/Wilson..4m non playing keeper and 2 x 4m def's...with a sprinkle of Siggy, Zaha and maybe Vardy.

So most will be sitting with a couple of 3-4 player combinations.

It seems its easy this year.

Completely agree. And this is where my Kane and yarmolenko will play an important part. And one of the reason why I am considering Coleman instead of Digne, a not so famous 2nd striker who is kinda under the radar.

Also it is interesting which strategy will work.

                1) to go against the crowd since the start and have like 3-4 differentials.

                2) follow the crowd with 1/2 different player

The template is pretty strong, so personally I would love to have 3-4 differentials.

I quite like it, it’s different to most teams on here, 3 good captaincy options but obviously with their high prices some sacrifices have been made in other areas. Good luck

Can't have it all can we?

A team without sterling looked good, but the fear of not owning sterling got to me and hence got him in my team

Downgrade one fo your cheaper mids to upgrade a defender if you plan on 4 at the back. Also DCL is not a good pick and you will regret it.

I'm not so sure with this squad depth and Rodri is joining them from Atletico Madrid. Also, David Silva is their new captain and will probably play a big part in his final season at the Etihad. De Bruyne is the only one untouchable when fit if you ask me.

    Hmmm, A or B?

    A
    Salah Sterling Zaha
King Deulofeu/Jota Nkeitah (last on bench)

    B
Mane KDB Grealish (if on pens, if not Yarmolenko)
Che Adams, Jiminez, Rashford (if on pens, Man U awarded most pens in prem last year, but Rashy only took 1 out of 12)

Many thanks, and good luck with your tinkering!

GW1 BENCH BOOST team - where would you get the 0.5 from to upgrade the 4.0 keeper? new player must have nice GW1 fixture 😉

    Heaton (*4.0*)
    TAA Robbo VVD
    KDB Siggy Moura Fraser Zaha
    Wilson King
    (Trippier Holebas Deulofeu)

GW1 and 38 are the only times you don't lose a FT whic helps, but also players like Moura could have a great game but then be pretty much useless (so he could be a quality differential) - guessing the lineups is obviously tougher though

We'll have a good idea about the lineups a week before we kick off the season. That'll be crucial.

Even if 13/15 players start , it'll be a success.

maybe Mane instead of KDB and downgrading a defender could work - I'll keep looking at it

I played BB in gw 1 last year very successfully but just not feeling it this time. Downgrade Fraser if you must, there loads of 7.0 or below mids who offer great value. I'd also be wary of all your fwd eggs in the same basket

I'd rather have two eggs in one basket that one egg in the wrong basket 😉 but yeah Fraser too is probably a bit much - yeah it can definitely work, I don't like the distraction of it later on (would mean an early WC though)

I’m probably going to go with a boring template team to begin the season with, in my experience a good start to the season usually means a good season all round.

With that in mind how does this bunch look?

    Ryan
    Trippier TAA Laporte Digne
    Salah Sterling Siggy Moura
    Deulofeu King

    Button Long Dendoncker Kelly

FPL didn’t really need to add more than these 35 or so players. All I see is various selections of these players. Are you able to pick your team from the below?

    Ederson, Ryan, Button, Heaton.

TAA, VVD, Robbo, Digne, Coleman, Laporte, Mendy, Walker, 4m, Smith.

Salah, Sterling, Siggy, KDB, Mane, Zaha, Dendoncker, Rich, Bilva, Fraser, Mili, Madders.

King, Jota, Wilson, Vardy, Kane, Kun, Giroud, DCL, 4.5m, Deu.

Pretty much. But there's a good reason for that. Nailedness + value/potential + fixtures will heavily dictate GW1 teams, nothing wrong with that. As someone else said further up, getting a good start is pretty important, or you're playing catch-up from the get-go.

I actually have 4 from outside that list, but generally you make a good point. The reason is as I posted an hour ago - the list is remarkably free of any asset from UNITED, CHELSEA and ARSENAL (hardly anyone has Giroud, he shouldn't be on your list). That massively narrows the field.

I’m usually against having money sitting in the bank, but for the first GW I have found it was really useful in the past.

For example, if you want a certain player in you can only swap him for a player of the same value or less (unless you take a hit)

Having that 1m or so ITB gave a nice bit of flexibility...

    TAA Zinchenko Digne Kelly stearman

However little worried about maddison with the arrival of Perez would it be worth replacing him and making rashford into Vardy instead?

You could downgrade him to someone like target maybe and upgrade someone form the bench?

Just build your team with 343 formation and save it
It looks much greater. Even with weaker players

Nah 4 at the back looks too good to me. Premium defenders over 6-7m mids all day for me

    Maguire is slow and overpriced.
Ake would be a better player, captain material replacement for Kompany and lots cheaper with CL experience.
    That's the move

The likes of Ake, Lascelles, Schar, Dunk, Boly etc. won't cost half as much as and would represent better value for money.

However, I assume money isn't the problem for City or United so at £70m+ for a CB, you would expect one of the best in the world or in the market. Maguire is neither - I think his world cup goal and his stature has skewed people's view of him.

There's at least 7 defenders in the PL better than him, so I wonder how much they're worth now. PL clubs have a lot of financial muscle, so it's only worth buying (and overpaying) if that's the player who's the best available one for you.

Yes I think you can quite easily, even Salah instead of mane if you're prepared to go down to VVD

Hardest FPL early team pick ever. I think that those doing the pricing have done a very good job with the pricing, though I am starting to think that this is partly by being super conservative on defender pricing. It's almost impossible to get a really good defensive pick for less than 5.5m, which is helping to drive the push for premium (why not spend 0.5-1m more?) which is really limiting the amount of money to be spent elsewhere, and therefore forcing us into template mid/fwd choices.

If we had more options in defence our teams would look very different. Bit of a shame really.

Of course, pre-season will change a few things, but I am not sure how drastic this change will be.
