Hughes involved again as Watford get first point of the season

Newcastle United 1 Watford 1

Goals: Fabian Schär (£5.0m) | Will Hughes (£5.5m)

Assists: Isaac Hayden (£4.5m)

Bonus: Hughes x3, Hayden x2, Ben Foster (£4.9m) x2

Watford earned their first point of the season with a draw at Newcastle light on both consistent attacking quality and significant Fantasy impact.

Will Hughes (£5.5m) gave the visitors the lead after just two minutes and the Hornets held out until close to half-time before Fabian Schär (£5.0m) swept home Isaac Hayden‘s (£4.5m) knockdown.

Replays showed that the ball came off Hayden’s arm and the goal should have been chalked off, but the decision stood as VAR continued its mystifyingly inconsistent start to the season.

And, in truth, a draw was all that Watford deserved from a game in which coach Javi Gracia opted for pragmatism over progressiveness in a bid to halt his side’s three-match losing streak in the league.

Gracia left Deulofeu on the bench for the trip to Newcastle

Gracia made his intentions clear in his starting line-up, consigning striker Gerard Deulofeu (£6.3m) to the bench and fielding three centre-halves and a lone striker in a team set up to drop deep, absorb pressure and play on the counterattack.

The Spaniard, found in 2.9% of Fantasy Premier League squads, is Watford’s most popular asset, but he has lost close to half of his Gameweek 1 ownership and an eight-minute cameo at St James’ Park will do little to halt that decline.

At least Hughes (0.3%) has offered attacking returns, figuring in both goals the Hornets have so far managed this season.

The midfielder followed up his assist in last week’s 3-1 loss to West Ham United by finding the net when Tom Cleverley‘s (£4.9m) shot was deflected into his path.

Watford have struggled to offer much attacking threat so far this season

Hughes’ effort was one of only three shots on target for the visitors, while Andre Gray (£5.9m) and Kiko Femenia (£4.5m) both missed good chances on the break before Newcastle equalised and then took control of the game in the second half.

Not that the Magpies were overly impressive going forward themselves.

Both sides had 13 attempts, eight of which were in the area respectively, and created a chance every 7.4 minutes.

The home team did manage two more shots on target than Watford, forcing Ben Foster (£4.9m) into some smart work to deny both Miguel Almirón (£5.9m) and Hayden in a performance that earned the goalkeeper two bonus points.

But Newcastle’s lack of an end product – three goals from four matches – means their attacking assets remain attractive to only the most tribal, or wilfully optimistic, of Fantasy managers.

Almirón’s efforts called Ben Foster into action in Gameweek 4

Manager Steve Bruce’s plans were hampered by injuries to wide men Matt Ritchie (£5.5m) and Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.4m), meaning first starts for Christian Atsu (£5.4m) and Jetro Willems (£4.5m).

That did little to improve the supply line to striker Joelinton (£5.9m), who was the match-winner in Gameweek 3’s surprise victory over Spurs.

The Brazilian could not muster a single shot on target against Watford, his two attempts matched by defenders Schär and Craig Dawson (£5.0m).

At least Hayden produced a first return of the season for his 5.7% ownership – the joint-highest figure among Newcastle players alongside centre-half Jamaal Lascelles (£4.5m) – although that popularity is most likely down to his bargain bucket pricing in FPL.

Fabian Schär showed his aerial threat once again, scoring Newcastle’s only goal against Watford

And Schär’s goal again demonstrated his attacking potential, having scored four times, and provided one assist, last season.

The Swiss international, however, was substituted after 84 minutes as a precautionary measure, according to Bruce.

“He was feeling not great at half-time and had dizziness in spells, which was a bit of a concern, and in the end he wasn’t great when I spoke to him in a water break when one of the players was injured. There was a sort of vacancy about him, so I hope he’s okay. We’ll see how he is. He was not feeling well, he was just complaining to the doctor about being dizzy, and that was at half-time.” – Steve Bruce

Schär is still expected to join up with the Switzerland squad, but even without an international break to stall our Fantasy dealings, there is likely to be no rush to acquire assets from either side any time soon.

Watford will face Arsenal and Manchester City over the next two Gameweeks, with tricky trips to Wolves and Spurs just round the corner as well.

And the Magpies have to play Liverpool, Leicester City and Manchester United before the second round of international fixtures rears its ugly head in early October.

For once, country before club could work in both managers’ favour, buying them some much-needed time to work on the deficiencies, both defensive and attacking, hampering their respective sides.

Gracia is certainly hoping the enforced break can be a force for good.

“Last season we started really well, this season the first four games we have only got one point. Now we have a break and it’s a good time to work and prepare better for the next game.” – Javi Gracia

Newcastle, with four points from their last two outings, are clearly in a better place than Watford.

But as things stand, neither set of players currently represent much Fantasy fruit worth picking.

All I am praying for is none of my current players to lose value. I reckon I played my WC to the T. Can only think of 1 player which may lose value, but he will need to be abandoned completely for that to happen. During IB I just need the players I am targeting to be steady without too many rises, also looking good for now, take a couple of hits then I will be A ok till the next WC in January. Nothing you can do about injuries and suspensions etc.

This game all comes down to planning. You can play your WC at any time, as long as it is planned properly.

I wouldn't be too concerned with the occasional drop. David Silva went down to 7.4 but I held and he's since returned two 10 point hauls, good chance he goes back up to 7.5 during the international break.

tried to get some feedback to maybe improve/keep my team with the plan. so trying again.

    wc team

    Pope 4.0
    taa digne mings lunds hanley
    Salah Sterling Silva Cantwell Ceballos
    Aguero Barnes 4.5

Plan is to try to maximize gw 5 and gw 6 with silva aguero and ceballos playing norwich watford and villa and then gw 7 maybe i can do aguero to abraham silva to kdb and probably ceballos to lanzini. i was told however it makes no sense but with no real feedback as to what i should do then (Ceballos to james was the only real suggestion). any thoughts or suggestions?

I'd back him to start. The Spurs benching wasn't that surprising, he did the same last season, and Pep loves him against deeper lying defences.

Yeah I don’t think Aguero will get enough points over De Bruyne to be worth the risk when you put it like this, and if you need transfers for anything else it just gets you in a pickle. De Bruyne, Haller have a decent next two anyway

And Sterling was essential the week before. 2 goals for Sterling next week and Aguero blank or benched for Hesus, you have the masses on here moving the other way again: selling Aguero and buying Sterling.

Wildcard teams seem to be ignoring Arsenal attack. With their fixtures think this might be mistake as their front 3 going to click soon and score a heap of goals. I would definitely be looking to get Pépé to get ahead of the crowd.

              Pepe - wat AVL
              Son - CPL lei

              Pepe - mun BOU shu
              Son - SOU bha WAT

So my plan is Pepe for two weeks. If he delivers, wonderful, he stays. If he doesn't, switch to Son.

I saw the game and think Pepe is a better pick.

The members area has them for Sunday's match (in direct comparison):

                  Pepe 80% overall +7 Key
                  Son 20%overall +2 Key

Pepe shoots a ton, gets into promising positions. He will find his range and when he does, he will get double digits.

The guy is playing as a number 10 nowadays, his game is so different to what he started out as.

Hes still a class player - but hes losing his FPL appeal massively. He doesnt just poach goals and score worldies anymore - he drops deep in the build up and gives more space to Son/Moura etc.

If he wasnt on penalties, his score this year would be damn awful

            Hello everyone!

Quick question, would you rather have on Wildcard (and why if possible):

            a) Callum Wilson and Mané
            b) Moise Kean and Salah

Both combinations cost exactly the same, I have no other EVE, BOU or LIV in mid or attack.

I'm currently on a) because Wilsons fixtures actually look good and he got some points in every game so far. On the other hand, Kean might get some more gametime now and EVE could start getting better offensively (it seemed like it the last game at least). I rate Salah higher than Mané over the whole season, but Mané can always outscore him in some games obviously.

Inputs and opinions would be much appreciated!

A for the reasons you have stated + Kean is still very young and not used to league so a punt, whereas Wilson and Mane are proven assets.

Martial to Lanzini. He played so well last game and was unlucky not to score. Also he's getting in advanced positions this year plating just behind Haller.

Think i've just nailed the wildcard? :

            Pope / Button
            TAA / Digne / Otamendi / Guilbert / Lundstram
            Sterling / Mane / KDB / Iwobi / Cantwell
            Firmino / Barnes / Greenwood

Just one problem, i don't think i really need to use it with 2FT's in hand and can get this for a -4 which is arguably almost as good right? :

            RYAN / Button
TAA / Digne / Otamendi / VAN DIJK / Lundstram
            Sterling / SALAH / KDB / MCGINN / DENDONCKER
            PUKKI / Barnes / Greenwood

            A - WC squad?
            or
            B - -4 hit squad?

Watchlist for GW6/7. Don’t have Mount or James and don’t expect to go that way. Most of these of course have recently lost value!!

            Vardy
            Auba
            Pepe
            Wilson
            Trossard
            Tielemans

May shift around in defence too - perhaps losing 3rd premium. Favourite is Boly right now.

no, just ready to cash in on Kun and get one of Vardy/Kdb. Other option is selling Auba but I'm hoping he does the business.

Have Kun for next 2 but expect to sell before 7. It’s a triple up for two prime game weeks that could well turn out to be a Peptation nightmare double up at best 🙂

Really fancy triple 9.0 plus of Pepe KdB and Vardy going forward if I can manage it.

              James:
              - xG + xA per 90 = 0.46
              - shots per 90 = 3.49
              - key pass per 90 = 0.63

              Mount:
              - xG + xA per 90 = 0.34
              - shots per 90 = 3.5
              - key pass per 90 = 2

Kane and Sterling to Mane and Auba for free. Yay or nay? Sterling CL games coming up and off the boil, Mane looks like he is gunning for the golden boot

No way would I be selling sterling before his next two GW's

Most are trading Liverpool for city assets, thinking differently there. Even last season with CL Sterling still performed well in PL so probably not. Also less rotation threat now that Sane is out.

Not sure Sane out makes any particular difference. Pep rests his assets almost regardless - it’s not as if City are short of options in attack generally.

There's no one to play on the left other than Sane and Sterling.

Mahrez can play either wing - he’s certainly featured on the left for City intermittently.

              Bold.

Could be a very smart move if - as seems quite possible - Pep uses the next two for rotation.

Think Mane and Auba are great calls generally. I expect to revert to them from around 8 on (possibly Pepe instead of Auba) - prepared to risk the triple up in the meantime
