A guide to playing FPL over the Christmas period

Christmas is a time to remind yourself of what’s really important in life: Fantasy Football.

Christmas can still be a difficult time for Fantasy Premier League managers though, particularly with friends, family and general festivity getting in the way of solemn, dedicated analysis.

So, with this in mind, I thought I’d share some tips on how to best navigate the Christmas period as a Fantasy manager.

Multi-Tasking

There’s a lot going on over Christmas and, if you’re an avid FPL manager like me, it’s sometimes hard to prioritise the really important things.

Personally, I like to set aside an hour or two a day to not think about Fantasy Football. I find this allows me to remain centred, present and the best version of myself for, at least, the length of an episode of Doctor Who or the Strictly Christmas special. Which is more than long enough.

With deadlines coming thick and fast, however, even finding this time can be challenging and, therefore, it’s crucial to learn how to multitask effectively.

The key here, I believe, is to try and integrate your Christmas schedule into your overall FPL schedule.

For example, I like to listen to FPL podcasts while I’m wrapping presents and, even though it sometimes leads me to accidentally write things like ‘strong bench’ or ‘Harry Kane’ on the gift tags, it makes optimal use of my time and helps me to ensure that I’m up to date with what’s going on.

Similarly, when decorating the Christmas tree, I like to think of each bauble as a football player in the ‘Christmas tree formation’. Of course, preferring a 3-4-3 myself, this can sometimes result in a less stable tree, prone to falling over and scaring the cat but, ultimately, it is this level of commitment that makes the difference between being a top 10k manager or being a loser in life.

Drink Responsibly.

(yes, that’s a full stop in a headline)

I can’t tell you how many stories I’ve heard of Fantasy managers waking up after the office Christmas party, dazed, hungover and in unfamiliar surroundings only to roll over and find they’ve made a terrible mistake.

They’ve transferred in Theo Walcott.

My advice here is that, while everybody should let their hair down once in a while and while it might seem like a good idea at the time, try and keep in mind how awkward it will feel the next morning, seeing Theo in your Fantasy team, the two of you trying to avoid eye contact…

Try to drink within your limits and, if you can’t then, whatever you do, don’t make transfers under the influence. One bad decision can ruin your entire season, and life.

Stay Always On

During Christmases of old, Fantasy managers would have to suffer the inconvenience of setting up a desktop computer at the Christmas dinner table or risk going up to several hours without checking on their Fantasy teams.

Some managers were unable to do even this and were thus forced to pull crackers, wear paper hats and speak to their families, like cricket fans.

Not many people know this, but smartphones were originally created to solve this exact problem, allowing Fantasy managers fast, convenient and real-time access to football scores and apps over the holidays.

Sometimes, while fiddling with my team and sending VAR hate tweets at the Christmas dinner table, I do marvel at how connected we humans have become over the years. Christmas really does remind us of how much we have to be thankful for.

My recommendation is to always have a smartphone or other internet-ready device within three feet of you at all times during the festive season.

Any further than that can cause anxiety and ruin Christmas.

Boxing Day

Boxing day is exclusively about football and everybody should already know this so don’t feel bad about abruptly switching off The Muppets Christmas Carol or whatever puerile nonsense the kids are watching in favour of a glorious 12 hours of uninterrupted TV football coverage.

Ideally, you will not move from the couch at all during this period and this, of course, necessitates getting a good seat.

I suggest you spend Christmas day scouting your surroundings to identify the optimum vantage point.

You might also want to consider making an early start to Boxing Day in order to secure the best seat or, at least, leaving a beach towel over it before going back to bed.

Obviously you can’t watch a football match without at least one spreadsheet open on your computer but I find that a good physical notepad (I prefer wire-bound with a ruled 7mm feint) for studiously jotting notes during the matches helps you to keep you on track following naps and, I feel, helps to project a vibe of professionalism, clearly demonstrating to passers-by that you’re doing important work and that you shouldn’t be interrupted.

Nobody ever bothered Arrigo Sacchi or Sir Alex Ferguson with questions about ‘watching Sherlock’ or ‘playing Boggle’.

After all, Boxing Day comes but once a year and you shouldn’t let anything, least of all family, friends or general social conventions get in the way of you enjoying it or remembering its true meaning, which is football.

And, with that, I hope you find these tips useful and I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

I know there's like three Guilbert owners here but would you play him? Starting to doubt their bottom line with Mings out.
But if I don't play him I'd have to play either TAA or Pereira. Not liking either. Ugh.

I would not be dropping TAA or Pereira for a Villa player, Norwich look somewhat potent again and Villa are leaky as anything home and away

You mean you are benching both TAA and Pereira - that’s not smart at all imo. TAA is inbenchable IMO and I would play Pereira at home vs LIV anytime compare to villa defender!

Could be easily 0-0 draw or both can easily have assists/goals (especially Trent)!

Pereira isn't really attacking much. He's good at tackling. Basically an expensive Wan Bissaka. Picking him over the two CBs was really a bad decision.

No choice really for me with Soy and Rico. Got him in around 14 for this run but it doesn’t look good anymore. Hoping for a 2 pointer and not a card 🙁

Go TAA in your case surely

This is because Vardy(C) will be the popular pick for next 5 fixtures 😉

Really unsure what to do here with 1FT and 2.1ITB. Maybe a sideways Robertson to TAA? Or Dendocker to Cantwell?

    Guatia
    Robertson Lord Targett
    Mane KDB Grealish Maddison
    Ings Kane Vardy

    Button Kelly Soyuncu Dendoncker

    Or the obvious boring option...SAVE?

Ok, so here are my thoughts and why I finally decided to board the Harry Kane train (and most probably captain him this GW)!

Although he is quite frustrating to own I think he is quite underrated this season.

He has a proven record for last 5 season with average:

    - 2792 minutes per season played
    - 200 points per season
    That makes a 6.45pts per 90minutes

Currently he is sitting on 84 pts and has played 1524minutes or 4.96 per 90mins. That means he is a whole 1.5 pts below his average points per 90minutes over the last 5 seasons, which in my opinion is quite a difference!

Current price of 10.9 is as low as he has been for the last 4 seasons. He used to have a price as high as 13.2 and we all remember when he has over 50% ownership!

My only slight concern is that he has some injury record, but not really that bad. He is not Suarez who never misses a game (unless banned of course :), but he is also far better than the likes of Martial and Aguero and co. And of course if he gets injured you can easily swap him!

However I can count many advantages in his favor:
    1) he is as nailed as a striker could be - hasn’t missed a single minute this season (except when he was sick one GW).
    2) That means almost zero rotation risk over the festive period of next 3 GWs and we all want a striker who is playing 90 minutes every game
    3) he is on penalties and has a very good penalty record (not like Rashford for example)
    4) Kane hasn’t blanked for more than 2 consecutive games this season (and yes he just blank twice in a row)
    5) loves scoring hat tricks around that time of the year 🙂

Do you agree with me - who else is getting on the Kane train ?

    1. pingissimus
      • 5 Years
      4 years, 4 months ago

      Not for me

The central pairing in midfield kills Spurs attack as the ball supply is so slow - it’s really down to a quick counter and with Son out that looks less good.

Kane can always score and always will - lots of horrid goals. But hauls are unlikely and there’s way better value out there. I’d have Jim for consistency and with the same probable ceiling

Yes, Maybe you are right but I already decided to give him a chance for the next 3 good fixtures and reassess later!

The plan is to ditch him for LIV game if he is poor, especially if Ars show some form with a nice upcoming run of fixtures.

Not a bad plan - just not my plan A 🙂

I’ve had a lot of faith in Kane in the past 2 seasons and it’s generally paid so I’m not wholly down on him. It’s possible Wolves and Chelsea was just Mou being cautious against direct competitors- he’s history of that after all. If that’s so then you could be onto a winner

What are people's thoughts about Pogba?

    NEW (H)
    BUR (A)
    ARS (A)
    NOR (H)

He made a big difference when he came on vs Watford and he's exactly the type of player Man United need when they can't play on the counter.

The Arsenal game looks perfect for trying to counter but the rest need someone like Pogba to unlock the defence.

Could he be an option ahead of Richarlison or Alli for Son replacements?

Will he even play 75+ mins over the next 3 fixtures given how long he was out?

He's our best player (I'm a MUFC season ticket holder) and is exactly what we've been missing against deep defences. It also looks like he'll be 'freed up' with McTominay/Fred sitting allowing Pogba to do what he does best - affect games in the final third rather than prance around in deeper positions getting caught on the ball.

Is he an option? Definitely. But I'm just not sure after three months out whether he'll be trusted to play three games in six days. Also, he's lost penalties to Rashford so he's not the same goal threat as last season. He's a big risk and I personally will be monitoring for now but not taking the plunge.

For me it's mainly the amount of time he's been out, the fact that he's very much a confidence player and that you don't know who might have been whispering in his ear with the transfer window about to reopen. It could go both ways with him.

He's not too expensive, though I'd have liked him to have ended up cheaper with the amount of time he's missed, so he's not too much of a stretch to bring in, but I just don't see the need for us to do it right away. Let's give him a game or two and see what happens, particularly for those of us who own Rashford, who should end up hedging some of the Pogba points in any case.

I know he's been leaving teams round here at a rate of knots but not having owned Maddison yet this season he's my number one pick for that slot. Liverpool don't keep many clean sheets and after Liverpool Leicester go on another decent fixture run. He's near the top of all of the relevant stats charts. Maybe you already have him though?

Oh Andy, trust you 🙂 . Pogba is a massive gamble. It could pay off but any logical thinking, serious FPL manager will know that bringing him in right now is a no no. His game time is a concern, we don't know exactly how Utd will play with him. He may even be sold in January (despite what Ole says). I think it's a wait and see, unless of course you're a die hard Utd fan and you cannot resist the urge to have a Utd player in your FPL team at all times 😉

I think he is a decent option, he's a risk obviously but he is the type of player with proven pedigree that could push managers up the ranks if brave enough to go for him.

I have Martial and happy to stick with him for the moment - especially as Pogba's creativity in the No.10 role might bring out the best in Tony

He could be a great option but another thing to keep in mind is that he often looks like he doesn't even care and is very capable of putting in an anonymous (or worse) performance if he doesn't fancy it. He's had one period of sustained form since he joined and that was less than half a dozen games (?), also he wanted to leave in the summer and doesn't look like he'll be allowed to move in Jan despite apparently still wanting to go, he's very much a gamble.

Injuries and fitness can be 2 different things.
Pogba is a natural athlete and has that ability to feature in all the games.
It's just if the attitude is right. Like his reaction to Mourinho going was a nice run of double figure scores.

I've been having the same dilemma but can you really look past Maddison? I know he's no fashionable at the moment for some reason but he has one tough fixture against a team struggling as much as anyone to keep clean sheets and then he has another nice run of fixtures.

There is nobody more consistent than him at anything below about 10m.

Thoughts on son to mount? Leaves enough money for Alli to Salah the week after....

I guess many have the same dilemma

    A) Son > Salah and bench Cantwell (avl)
    B) Play Cantwell and save FT

Thoughts on this WC team ahead of GW20?

    Ryan - 4.0
    Evans - Lundstram - Kelly - Rico - 3.9
    Salah - Sterling - KDB - Maddison - Cantwell
    Vardy - Jimenez - Maupay

    Thanks guys!

Maybe Ings > Jimenez or Maupay, I know his fixtures are all 4's, but he's been scoring against everyone. Only issue for me is his 2 games in 3 days, doubt he will play both.

Rest of the team looks solid, esp. midfield

if sons red card is being appealed against, when do you think we will hear?
    chances of it being overturned?

Don’t think so - Sou home will be a hard game. Could be an away win easily!

    Advice please,

    Team is,

    Gazzaniga - McGovern
    TAA - Lundstram - Soyuncu - Willems - Kelly
    Zaha - Grealish - Mane - KdB - Alli
    Kane - Vardy - Mousset

    2FTs and 0.3m.

Just doing some forward planning, my defence has a tricky fixture schedule in GW23-24.
I’m looking at dropping Willems now as his fixtures are awful, and I’m mad at him for missing last weeks clean sheet and getting Soyuncu off the bench!

    A. Willems to Femenia.
    Or
    B. Willems and Mousset to Digne and Greenwood.

C been out for ages, presume he'll play in front of McTominay/Fred so should free him up
D good points scorer but doesn't always play.
