Greenwood and Wan-Bissaka benched as Man United host Palace

Mason Greenwood (£7.5m) finds himself on the bench as Manchester United start their Premier League campaign a week late.

The 18-year-old was a fixture on the right-hand side of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s attacking midfield trio during Project Restart, but his place has been handed to Daniel James (£6.5m) today.

The Manchester United boss has made two surprising decisions on the right-hand side of the pitch as Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.5m) loses out to Timothy Fosu-Mensah (£4.5m) in defence.

Outside of that, the Red Devils line up mostly as we would expect. Anthony Martial (£9.0m) leads the line, supported by Marcus Rashford (£9.5m) on the left and Bruno Fernandes (£10.5m) in the number 10 role.

There will be plenty of eyes on those two players as Jan Sienkiewicz pointed out in the most recent captaincy article that Crystal Palace have shown some weakness from set pieces and down their right flank in open play.

Roy Hodgson’s men arrive at Old Trafford in their traditional 4-4-2 formation, Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) once again deployed out of position as a centre-forward alongside Jordan Ayew (£6.0m).

Budget defender Tyrick Mitchell (£4.0m) keeps his place in the side at left-back, although the defensive injury crisis at Palace eases slightly with the return of Mamadou Sakho (£4.5m) at centre-back.

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Shaw, Maguire, Lindelöf, Fosu-Mensah; Pogba, McTominay; Rashford, B Fernandes, D James; Martial.

Crystal Palace XI (4-4-2): Guaita; Mitchell, Sakho, Kouyaté, J Ward; Schlupp, McCarthy, McArthur, Townsend; Zaha, Ayew.

clyne training with palace is odd no? Why would he train there? Must be a move coming

Its not unusual that players train with clubs even if they dont have a contract. Its a chance to show if they are good enough to be given a contract. If he impresses in training he might sign for Palace

Why odd one of academy players coming back home? Think if he joins will be to cover RB/LB as Ferguson will take a while to come back and rumours PVA may leave in January.

I have rich but am concerned that he’s playing wide and has an attitude on him about not being centre forward. Ancelotti won’t have his nonsense

        This is utter nonsense.

He plays behind the striker to the left. That’s his favoured position. He loves playing for Everton. He seems to totally ‘get’ the club and the fans. Pretty sure Ancelotti loves him too.

He just has a resting bitch face. Totally sound off the pitch and seems to be massively popular with the rest of the dressing room.

James is a better pick imo because I can find lots of fwd options who play as center forwards in their teams and I don't know who to choose. I can't own Richarlison too.

Are people here really too thick to understand that United get a lot of penalties because they have a lot of quick attacking players who invite challenges? It isn’t rocket science. Why do so many act like it’s some kind of conspiracy?

          1. @persecuted_by_mods
              3 years, 7 months ago

Not neccassarily, those players are higher quality you can't even get near them to foul them, plus they have actual tactics and patterns of play whereas utd need individual brilliance, plus utd more likely than those two to be playing on the counter too

It's not as simple as oh mane and Salah are better than greenwood and rashford where are their penalties

Just caught up on scores after being away all day.

Amazing 5min to to see Keane, Hamez & DCL returned in one game after getting them in WC. May have to get Werner now though.

Whatever happens for rest of week the WC has been worth it now.
