Calvert-Lewin offsets longest goalless streak with another Fantasy assist

EVERTON 2-1 ARSENAL

  • Goals: Yerry Mina (£5.5m) | Nicolas Pépé (£7.6m)
  • Own goals: Rob Holding (£4.4m)
  • Assists: Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.9m), Gylfi Sigurdsson (£6.8m) | Ainsley Maitland-Niles (£4.6m)
  • Bonus points: Mina x3, Sigurdsson x2, Maitland-Niles x1

NUMBER NINE

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.9m) continues to divide Fantasy Premier League opinion with his latest Gameweek score below six points

It was the third match in a row that Everton’s centre-forward failed to find the net, his longest goal drought of the season so far.

But Calvert-Lewin does remain blankless in that time, assisting in every match from Gameweek 12 onwards. Each of them has been a Fantasy assist, the first a foul for a penalty, then a shot scored on the rebound and, against Arsenal, he forced Rob Holding‘s (£4.4m) own goal.

How strong Calvert-Lewin’s Fantasy credentials are right now, perhaps depends on what his owners are looking to get out of him. If steady returns work for you, then he is certainly delivering solid, if not spectacular, appeal.

However, one thing is for certain: Calvert-Lewin is offering less objective value compared to earlier in the campaign, slipping below Callum Wilson (£6.6m) and Patrick Bamford (£6.3m) for points per million spent after 14 Gameweeks (or 13 in the case of the Leeds forward).

We recently highlighted that Everton’s improved defensive ability, achieved by deploying centre-backs as full-backs, had damaged Calvert-Lewin’s supply lines and the same seemed to be true against Arsenal.

Chances were few and far between for the striker on Saturday who, up against Arsenal’s back-three, was tasked with more of the dirty work than usual, holding the ball up and pressing from the front to protect his team-mates.

Obviously, it has to be pointed out that the last three matches have pitted Everton against ‘bigger’ opposition (it is hard to use the term “better” when referring to Arsenal these days).

While that could be considered mitigating circumstances, they are circumstances that could continue throughout the winter period with Manchester City (home), Wolves (away), Aston Villa (away) and Leicester (home) four of Everton’s next six opponents.

GYLFI PLEASURES

It is also no surprise that Calvert-Lewin’s recent dip in value has coincided with James Rodríguez‘s (£7.7m) absence from the Everton team.

Unsurprisingly, Alex Iwobi (£5.9m) has not been able to replicate the Colombian’s early-season form in his last three outings on the right-hand side of the Toffees’ attack.

However, it is worth pointing out that Gylfi Sigurdsson (£6.8m) has taken on some responsibility for getting the team going from central areas.

Ancelotti has mostly favoured 4-3-3 this season, a system that does not typically get the best out of the Icelandic international, who is most comfortable as a number 10.

The Everton manager switched to 4-2-3-1 for the Arsenal game, with Tom Davies (£5.2m) deputising for the injured Allan (£5.3m) and André Gomes (£5.4m) in a deeper role next to Abdoulaye. That allowed Sigurdsson to have a more advanced role in central areas, finishing top for key passes among Everton players.

“(Gomes) had a problem in training. It is not possible to train. Because we have a lot of games, we don’t want to take a risk. I think he will be available for Chelsea on (Boxing Day).” – Carlo Ancelotti

Crucially, his role in penalties means he has registered a goal involvement in each of his last two Premier League home games (one goal, one assist), as many as in his previous 17 at Goodison Park.

GO ON MASON

Everton’s defensive improvements with centre-backs at full-back continued against Arsenal, despite giving up a first-half penalty.

Over the last three matches, the Toffees are still yet to concede from open play, particularly encouraging as they prepare to face the Premier League’s second-lowest scorers Sheffield United on Boxing Day.

However, it is still worth pointing out the complications with signing Everton defenders.

While Mason Holgate (£4.8m) and Ben Godfrey (£5.0m), in particular, have done well in wide areas, the return to full fitness of Seamus Coleman (£4.8m) is a factor worth monitoring.

Meanwhile, the goalkeeper position remains uncertain too, Jordan Pickford (£4.8m) coming back in for Robin Olsen (£4.5m), under Ancelotti’s pretence of this being “normal rotation” for this time of year.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s own goal-scoring problems persisted at Goodison Park. They have not scored from open play in any of their last five Premier League away games, with their two goals on the road since Alexandre Lacazette’s (£8.2m) strike against Liverpool coming from the penalty spot.

Could that bode well for Brighton, the next side to host the Gunners? They were without Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.4m) on Saturday, who missed out with a tight calf.

“(Aubameyang) has got a small muscle injury so he will be out for a few days I think. I don’t know (if he’ll be fit for the next match). We’ll have to assess him again.” – Mikel Arteta

Everton XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Godfrey, Keane, Mina, Holgate; T Davies, Doucouré; Richarlison (Kenny 90+2′), Sigurdsson, Iwobi (Coleman 83′); Calvert-Lewin (Tosun 90+3′).

Arsenal XI (3-4-3): Leno; Tierney, D Luiz, Holding; Saka, Elneny (Willock 64′), Ceballos, Maitland-Niles; Willian, Nketiah (Lacazette 76′), Pépé (Martinelli 71′).

Good player against a poor team trying to figure it out under a new manager who had 10 men for most of the match. He could have filled his boots, and he did.

I just don’t think we can ignore Zouma’s attacking threat and the fact he plays against a toothless Arsenal side. Only thing pulling me towards benching him is that I also own Mendy.

IMO the decisions to be made GW18/19 are basically:
    a) FH GW18/19
    b) WC GW 18/19
    c) both
    d) None

The underlying issues avoiding chips is disrupting the games coming before. The decisions can be divided into 2 camps:
    1) Chelsea, Pool, ManU
    2) Citeh, Spurs

The above being targets split to BGW and DGW
I have 6 BGW starters atm. It is simple for me to get 10 picks but getting Spurs will impact on other nice picks with good fixtures. In other words, I will be using transfers and having to sacrifice good assets such as Salah and Bruno. That alone puts me off building a BGW side.
Having 1 non starter (Button) I will have 8 DGW players plus KDB who I want to Keep. To build for DGW19 is far simpler. It will take 2 hits to get to BB side' an overrated chip if ever there was one. After the DGW I have too much sitting on the bench.

It seems from above my future lies in DGW19 building having a side I will be able to move forward with and keeping my WC and using the FH.

I hope the above makes sense. What are others doing on this site?

It makes sense. I'm kind of locked into FH19 because I already have 8 SGW players. It's frustrating though because it's restricting me from moving off triple City and picking up bruno.

I think I just have to go with it and hope city play themselves into form with their fixtures

I think it is forcing people into 2 camps after the DGW. Pool Chelsea ManU or Citeh Spurs. I am keeping KDB and will find a way of getting Son/Kane dependent on fixtures.

I’ve always said i’ll TC Mo Salah whenver he has 2 home games, and this is the time. united aren’t exactly solid defensively. And it’s likely Mo should play both games. This means i won’t need 15 DGW players. So it makes planning easier.

I have little faith in City as an attacking force right now. I have a strong midfield with Salah by foregoing KDB. If you lose him and maybe one expensive defender is changed for Stones, still 4.8, can you do it without taking hits?

There's nobody who he can downgrade KDB to. I'm doing so next week for Son but he has him, so I don't see a viable option here that's worth removing KDB for.

Neto, Podence, Zaha, Mahrez, JRod who'll be back. Robbo + one of these will outscore a limp KDB and presumably Dallas as 3rd defender, in my book (I'd prob take JRod or Neto myself). Would leave enough itb for options going forward.

If i hold my 2 FTs the plan is KDB to soucek/rephina and brewster to Kane the following week

But too much could happen. No way i sell kdb if he explodes

The other obvious move if i go without robbo is grealish and dcl out after this week for Soucek and Kane. That would allow me all 5 big hitters

                  Thanks both

The options i am cinsidering here were

Dcl to adams and zouma to Robbo

Grealish to soucek and Lewis to Robbo

Lewis to 3.9 and Chillwell to Robbo but that leaves me with a nothing bench

Honestly, I don’t see the point in trying to create a line up geared specifically towards GWs18 and 19.

I’m basically just looking at the two of them combined as two game weeks and trying to get the best players overall, as long as I:
              - have a captain candidate playing GW18 (check), and
              - have a captain candidate playing two games in GW19 (check).

If it looks like there is a strong opportunity to use my TC or BB, I will, but I really don’t see the point using a WC, FH, or spending the next four GWs building a team for those two weeks.

My current squad with 2FTs looks like it will be excellent for BB DGW19. I'd rather go with that and frankly sacrifice BGW18, putting out only 6-7 starters. I don't want to waste half my chips in one swoop.

For me, the specific fixtures in GW18 are too random to punt a chip on. My City and Spurs assets are locked in anyway. But we're not even halfway through the season yet and I'd rather have the flexibility of chips for later on.

              Morning DZ,

Re my team below, will be saving FT for next week.

For GW16, what do you think of KDB, Mitchell & Lamptey to TAA, Robertson & Harrison/Raphinha? (-4)

              Martinez
              Chilwell - Cresswell - Dallas
              Salah - KDB - Son - Fernandes - Soucek
              DCL - Bamford

              Steer / Wilson - Lamptey - Mitchell

              Best replacement for Lamptey?

              A) Dier
              B) Coufal
              C) Dallas
              D) KWP/Bednarek

I'm kinda in the same boat and looking to replace both Lamptey and Mitchell. Personally I'm going for Coufal and James (or Aurier if James rises) I did look at getting Dallas in but you're going to go for him you may need to move on him before the deadline as his price is going up tonight or tomorrow...

This. I wouldn't lose the Big 4, but Grealish can go - presumably you'd downgrade him to the likes of Soucek?

My plan is after the GW15 game, lose Grealish and Watkins. Raphina and Antonio are in my thoughts.

Why? Grealish was fixture-proof last season, Barkley is close to returning, and Villa still have two games in hand.

Lundstram was a Lord last season 😉
But your other two points are certainly valid. I can get them back later after that nasty run of fixtures, but right now they seem to be better options at the back, like City (thus I'm keeping Martinez).

True. I also have my tactic for GW19BB in mind; Villa play Spurs/Everton GW18-19. Leeds/Hammers have 2 tasty ties in GW19.

*obviously* not going to pull the trigger yet but how’s this for a plan? I want Vardy back in! 2 FTs, 0.3 ITB

              GW15: Lewis > Taylor
              GW16: KDB > Son, Kane > Vardy

              A few things to consider:

              1) I know he laughed it off but Vardy may be injured.
              2) Kane and KDB may perform at a sufficient level this gameweek to consider keeping them.
              3) this rather blows apart my BGW/DGW plan

It's mutating constantly yes, however this newest version is 70% more contagious which we haven't seen anything close to so far... There are reasons to be concerned for possible new postponed games.

Whilst I got away with putting out XI players without taking a hit by benching my triple Villa, it was too close to call. I'd want to make sure I had adequate cover should a random match be postponed.

James Chilwell Lamptey — Taylor Douglas
Bruno Kdb Son Salah — Burke
              Dcl Watkins Bamford

              - def planning to do kdb + watkins >> zaha/grealish + kane in gw16 so

A: James >> 4.6m def who plays in gw18 or
B: James + Chilwell >> Dier + Dias and do gw16 as planned

Im starting to think that Bench Boost shouldn't be played on DGW19, as many of us wont be maximising 15 players (we will keep at least Son/Kane/Grealish/Martinez), this means that your bench will consist of at least 4 blank players for gw19.

              What do you guys think?

Depends who you've got. By making just 2 transfers before then (for players I'd want to keep going forward), I can have 10 players for 2 games, and the other 5 are at home to Palace and away to Sheff U. It does mean I effectively sacrifice GW18, putting out 6-7 players only. I'm prepared to do that.

depend on the rest of your team. but if you don't have any other priority, you can try as people likely to sell them for the tough fixtures. Vardy has a better chance to get points than the latter.
