Fixtures not on Wilson’s side as loss of Andersen could aid Saints in Gameweek 15

Newcastle United 1-1 Fulham

  • Goals: Callum Wilson (£6.6m) | Matt Ritchie (£4.9m) own goal
  • Assists: Tosin Adarabioyo (£4.5m)
  • Bonus: Wilson x3, Adarabioyo x2, Sean Longstaff (£4.7m) x1

Callum Wilson (£6.6m) was essentially the only Fantasy man in town for Newcastle’s draw with Fulham, and he didn’t disappoint.

The 17.3%-owned striker scored his eighth goal of the season to earn a point for the Magpies in a game long on controversy and a lot shorter on the nicer things of a footballing life, such as ‘interest’ and ‘skill’.

One-Man Show

Aside from Wilson, the next most popular Fantasy Premier League (FPL) asset on display was Fulham forward and ‘ghost team’ staple Aleksandar Mitrovic (£5.5m and 4.3%).

But, like the rest of his season so far, the less said about him, the better.

It really was all about Wilson on Saturday night – and not entirely for good reasons.

He earned the penalty that drew his side level by throwing himself down in the area under a challenge from Joachim Andersen (£4.5m).

Referee Graham Scott initially awarded the penalty and although VAR showed what contact there was probably started and finished outside the area, he stuck with his decision and sent off Andersen for good measure.

That prompted one of the more honest managerial comments, from Fulham boss Scott Parker, post-match:

I think there will definitely be an appeal. I’ve gone and looked over the penalty incident and I’m not saying this with emotion or bias: I don’t understand how he’s given the penalty.

The game has changed drastically, hasn’t it, and I think we can see that. For what I have just seen – and I’m not standing here trying to defend it – the contact was made outside of the box and he then goes into the box and dives.

Not that Wilson’s FPL ownership were complaining when he picked himself up off the floor, slotted home the penalty – his fourth of the season – and earned maximum bonus for a nine-point haul.

Wilson is currently the fifth most prolific striker in the game, with 82 points, and only eight players have a better total overall.

In the six games in which he has found the back of the net, he has gained bonus points in all of them.

The ‘Best’ of the Rest

Despite all those points, investing in Wilson over the short term looks ill advised.

Newcastle travel to Manchester City next before there are visits from Liverpool and Leicester City either side of New Year’s Day.

Defensively, they’ve kept just one clean sheet in 12 matches, and the 3,322 brave souls who hoped Matt Ritchie (£4.9m) might help rectify that were treated to a comedy own goal when a wayward header from Tosin Adarabioyo (£4.5m) hit him in the face and went into the net.

As for Fulham, starts for Mitrovic and Tom Cairney (£5.3m) didn’t particularly galvanise the Cottagers’ attack, although the latter did end up joint-top for attempts, with three.

Ademola Lookman (£5.0m) and Bobby Decordova-Reid (£5.3m) spurned their best chances, which has been a recurring theme for the team as a whole this season.

A team that’s scored just twice in four Gameweeks might not worry their next three opponents, Southampton (at home) and Spurs and Burnley (both away), while the loss of the quietly impressive Andersen will be felt at the back on Boxing Day.

Since making his first start in Gameweek 7, he’s helped the side to both of their clean sheets for the season while conceding nine goals in eight games – they’d let in 14 in the first six.

The prospects of Che Adams (£6.0m) returning points appear all the better for Andersen’s unavailability – appeal pending, of course.

Despite the recent upturn in form, a tricky schedule and a Blank Gameweek 18 is unlikely to inspire much investment in this Fulham side, with even their pair of Double Gameweek 19 fixtures involving visits from Chelsea and Manchester United.

Newcastle United XI (4-4-2): Darlow; Dummett (Fraser 79), Clark, Fernández (Hayden 45), Yedlin; Ritchie, Shelvey, S Longstaff, Almirón; Joelinton (Gayle 75), C Wilson.

Fulham XI (4-2-3-1): Areola; A Robinson, Andersen, Adarabioyo, Aina; Zambo Anguissa, Lemina; Lookman (Bryan 90+4), Cairney (Hector 64), Cavaleiro; Mitrović (Loftus-Cheek 76).

Already got 8 DGW19 players in the squad, but only 4 BGW18 players, so I am leaning towards definitely free hitting in BGW18. How would you approach DGW19 in this situation?

    A) Use FTs and maybe a hit or two to get full playing bench and BB DGW19, then WC immediately after DGW because of the money in bench.
    B) Use FTs to get a strong starting XI for DGW19, save WC and BB for later use

    Squad is at the moment:
    McCarthy - Forster*
    Robertson - Dallas - Zouma - Konsa* - Mitchell*
    Salah - Fernandes - KDB - Soucek - Zaha*
    DCL* - Bamford - Brewster*

    * = need to transfer out before DGW19.

Similar situation here. At the moment I'm leaning towards B. I can't quite get a BB team I'd be happy with so I may TC Salah or just save my chips for later.

Captain hindsight of course but why on Earth did I captain Kane? Spurs are absolutely dire in attack. It was only a matter of time until the underlying stats caught up to them. Everyone holding for these great run of fixtures, but surely Spurs assets are more favorable if their ticker was a sea of red. They're hopeless against low blocks, remember the Burnley/West Brom/Brighton run they had a few weeks back?

Personally, I think I'm tempted to ditch Kane, maybe it's just anger but they're still a Jose attack and I will never captain the guy again.

    1. Jässi

Yeah I wouldn't captain Kane/Son at the moment. Even if they are likely to score or assist 1 goal per match, cannot see they exploding like Salah or Fernandes.

I think the best strategy is to captain a mid. Look at Kdb getting 4 handy points the other gw. Ser Harry usually adds insult to injury when he blanks by adding a yc.

Thing with Spurs game is is that they hinge so heavily on the first goal.

So you feel like an idiot if they go behind and lose. But equally if they get one early they can explode.

I captained Bruno but re-signed Kane this week (with an eye on the upcoming fixture run and him being as nailed as anyone over Xmas). Maybe I brought him back a couple of weeks early but I don't buy that spurs are going to fall apart now. It's just been a rough week - one in which they've been less clinical for a change.

Your living in the past mate. They haven’t scored more than 2 goals in 10 weeks. They’ve changed the system to grind out games. We saw against Palace they went 1-0 up and didn’t attack again. They weren’t going to keep up their conversation rate anyway

Thinking of shipping James out for a budget defender. Despite the woeful defense, is Dallas at 4.6 still a good buy ? (Have Bamford already) for this next 2 GWs and save him for the double

No, any difference in nailedness would be negligible. No threat was posed to Trent's spot during his injury, and since he's been back he's been steadily getting better and better again. I firmly expect there to be a point in the not too distant future where he overtakes Robbo again, for a while at least..

You have two playing GKers, a full bench and no obvious person to bench from your front 8.
I just wouldn't want that team come GW20 and it'll take about 4 transfers minimum to get back to where I'd want to be.

Not keen on this strategy at all to be honest

Interesting points. Can’t see a better week to play BB with so many fixtures.
Depends on when players are choosing to use their 2nd wildcard

Are you suggesting just cop gw18 and FH19 without the bench?

      Best route here?

      A) FH18
      - use 6FTs to get 10/11 DGWers in GW19. FH18. TC19.

      B) FH19
      - use 5 FTs to get 11 out for GW18. FH19.

I can see benefits of both. A) enables TC/BB in a decent DGW19, whereas with B) you can use FTs now to bring in the likes of TOT/MCY assets who have good fixtures and an 18 fixture.

      MCCARTHY, Forster
      JAMES, Cancelo*, Bellerin*, Targett*, Douglas
      SALAH, BRUNO, Kdb*, Son*, Riedewald
      BAMFORD, Wilson*, Watkins*

      [UPPERCASE] = GW19 DGWers (5)
      [lowercase*] = GW18 starters (7)

The problem with FH19 is that in order to get a full 11 out in 18, you have to lose players like Salah and Fernandes which is really not appealing. Your team looks better in GW20 as well if you keep 19 rather than 18 players imo.

Yeah my thoughts aswell. Would need to remove Salah or Bruno for KDB. Easier option is just FH for me in 18, or just go with no City attackers and field 6 or 7.

Not so sure about your last point - City has terrific fixtures from GW18 through 22, so definitely a case for tripling up, e.g. KDB+Dias+Stones. Would mean losing another big hitter for most, though.

Mmm City and Villa only. But compared to core guys like Salah, Fernandes, Chelsea defense, I think the latter wins out. You can also keep a City player for 19 whereas there's 0 value in keeping Salah or Fernandes in 18.

Yeah, for me I will probablyprobably have to do the hokey-cokey with KDB-Fernandes if FH'ing in GW19, really depends on what one can expect of returns between the two after GW19.

Yeah although I'd like only lose Bruno for 18 (get him back in 20) and Salah's run from 17 onwards is pretty bad (sou, blank, tot, whu, BHA, MCY, lei). Would obviously get both back for FH19.

MUN do have good fixtures from 20 onwards, but given the poor LIV fixtures and the great MCY/AVL/NEW fixtures from 20 onwards, I'm thinking it may be better to keep 18 rather than 19 players?

Only City and Villa surely. Newcastle are a team that's Callum Wilson or bust imo.

I'm intending to keep Martinez and KdB for 19 as part of a more conservative bench boost. Grealish I can buy back in 20 for a -4 if need be.

I currently have Cancelo, Targett, Bellerin, Son, KDB, Wilson & Watkins, so 7 starters (if Bellerin gets his spot back) in 18. 2FTs this week, so 5 to use between now and 18. Thinking to bring in Dias, Dier, Kane and 1/2 others.

If you save a FT in 18, then FH in 19, do you get 2FTs in 20, or do you lose the rolled transfer?

Im thinking A. Rage transferred KDB to Salah which is going to obviously end in tears.

But mainly FH18 is because Im keeping Son and Kane, and going to use my transfers to bring in DGW players for GW19.

Might still change. My teams a mess otherwise for 18.

This 18/19 is doing my head in.

Raphinha - Plays for the more attacking team, Antonio back will take away Bowen’s threat and Leeds play teams who are far worse defensively

Thanks solid advice and it is hard to look past Leeds style of play when analysing attackers (especially as West Ham typically sit back and have much less of the ball)

How does this plan look? James > Dier for a couple of weeks, then Dier > Cresswell for the DGW, will Free Hit in the BGW?

      Martinez (Meslier)
Coufal - Dallas - RJames (Lamptey & Taylor)
      Salah - KDB - Bruno - Soucek
      DCL - Kane - Bamford

Looking to shift Wilson as planned with the fixture swing, but Kane and Bamford's form is troubling me, even with their VS fixtures.

Did anyone else think Bamford went off the boil a bit yesterday? He'd have got 1-2 from the chances I saw on MOTD earlier in the season.

Planning to FH18 and BB19. These below are my transfers if everything goes smoothly. But which one of these to make first?

Grealish + Brewster -> Bowen + Antonio (GW17 if Antonio is fit)

      A) Watkins (CRY) -> Adams (ful)
      B) Forster -> Johstone /McCarthy (for bench only, planning to start Martinez (CRY))

      Edging to A atm.

Looking at James out and Wilson too - though was going to bench the later anyway and play 352 this week

James ---> looking at Dallas, Bednarek, potentially Dier (just seems such a boring pick)
Wilson ---> Can't really find a better option than Adams. Antonio still not back / trustworthy
Wanted Ings but now injured - can't stretch to Firmino

      Martinez Steer
      Robbo Coufal James* Taylor Mitchell
      Salah Bruno Kdb Grealish Soucek
      DCL Bamford Wilson

I used to underrate the value of penalties for a captain, believing that their randomness makes them a non-factor. But between Fernandes this week, Salah multiple weeks, Kane and KDB it's dawning on me how important captaining the penalty taker can be. Definitely a factor that deserves more consideration than I give it.

It’s also important the team they play for. Teams like Liverpool City Utd will get a lot more pens than teams like Spurs who don’t spend as much time in the opposition box. Kane on pens isn’t as valuable as say Salah or Bruno on pens

          • 3 Years

True that, also - unrelated to pens - is the team they're playing against. I've had a lot more success captaining against Leeds, Fulham etc because we can rely on them to be consistently dreadful defensively which is very valuable for captaincy. Ideally fixtures and form.

Yeah. People assume the teams in the bottom 3 are the best fixtures but the likes of Burnley West Brom and Sheffield will sit back and limit the opposition to 1/2 goals. On the other hand teams like Leeds Fulham Brighton even Soton will always play open games which means more goals

Absolutely agree that a deeper analysis into teams is necessary for the captaincy but let's not jump to the wrong conclusions either. Sheffield United may sit back but they've been consistently awful this season and have conceded 3+ goals on a number of occasions, whilst also being on 0 wins at Christmas. Fulham on the other hand have shown a lot of fight recently and the games against Liverpool and Leicester in particular recently have shown that they're not always the best choice for captaincy. Leeds and Soton might play open expansive football but it doesn't always mean the opposition can take advantage of it especially since Leeds and Soton are themselves good teams, and Soton in particular have proven themselves capable of going toe to toe with the big boys in recent times.

Is FH18 BB19 the only option? If you save your bench boost when will you use it? For the next DGW the play is to bring in players for the blank and then WC in loads of DGW players for the double. Problem is you can’t use 2 chips in 1 week. Bench boost only works with FH.

Just looking at the 19 fixtures and city and Spurs have great fixtures. Got to get the balance right of sgw and dgw players. I don’t want to use more than 1 chip over those weeks as they are valuable. I’ve seen lots of great ideas and planning but all are dependent on each managers current team, chip situation and opinion on each team / players potential. This is going to be a tough period sorting what you want to do while not damaging your team before 18 & 19 come around.

      1. JONALDINHO

All the teams who have a double are the teams in form such as Liverpool Utd Chelsea Soton Leeds West Ham whereas the teams with a blank don’t look as good. If you ride out BGW18 your team will be in all sorts after GW20

Not going mad on GW19 doublers tbh, want to keep my 2 City as they have good fixtures out the other side. Don't want to lose my Villa players either for same reason and the future doubles they have.

Took Kane and Son out in GW10 and not suffered so far. Things can obviously change but don't see me getting any back before the DGW now. Fixtures aren't great from GW20.
