Sizeable Double Gameweek 22 a possibility after FA Cup replays scrapped

With the number of games postponed piling up due to the latest Covid-19 outbreak, something had to give, and in an attempt to avoid increased fixture congestion, there will be no FA Cup replays in rounds three and four this season.

In a statement released on Monday evening the Football Association said:

“This exceptional decision was approved by the FA Board on Friday 17 December and has been taken in the wider interest of English football to alleviate the possibility of fixture congestion following several postponements in recent days and continued uncertainty ahead due to COVID-19.

Ties in the third and fourth rounds of this season’s competition will be played to a finish on the day, with extra-time and penalty shootouts if required.

Replays will return up to and including the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup from the 2022-23 season onwards.”

Recent weeks have seen Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City – amongst others – have fixtures postponed due to Covid outbreaks, with the current crop that need rescheduling as follows:

POSTPONED MATCHES STILL TO BE REARRANGED
  • Burnley v Tottenham Hotspur (weather)
  • Brighton and Hove Albion v Tottenham Hotspur (Covid)
  • Brentford v Manchester United (Covid)
  • Burnley v Watford (Covid)
  • Leicester City v Tottenham Hotspur (Covid)
  • Manchester United v Brighton and Hove Albion (Covid)
  • Everton v Leicester City (Covid)
  • Southampton v Brentford (Covid)
  • Watford v Crystal Palace (Covid)
  • West Ham United v Norwich City (Covid)
  • Aston Villa v Burnley (Covid)
  • Brighton and Hove Albion v Chelsea (Club World Cup)
  • Chelsea v Arsenal (Club World Cup)
DOUBLE GAMEWEEK 22

For Fantasy managers, the key takeaway from this development is that it increases the likelihood of a Double Gameweek in 22, with the midweek to follow now free.

Firstly, this is educated guess work at present, but what we might see is several of those fixtures detailed above moving into Gameweek 22, which starts Friday 14th January.

Current Gameweek 22 schedule

That means the five teams listed below – who are yet to be affected by a cancellation – won’t play twice in Gameweek 22, unless they get a postponement soon that is, but everyone else, at least in theory, could.

  • Leeds United
  • Liverpool
  • Manchester City
  • Newcastle United
  • Wolverhampton Wanderers
DOUBLE GAMEWEEK 21?

However, it doesn’t end there.

Further to the FA Cup replays news, we may also see the EFL Cup semi-finals – which are traditionally two-legged affairs – reduced to one.

If that happens then there is a possibility that some teams could double in Gameweek 21, too, especially those with multiple postponements.

CHIP STRATEGY

So, what does this mean for Fantasy managers? Well, it makes assets from those clubs that could feature twice more appealing in the coming weeks, if they are indeed handed a Double, while Gameweek 22 may be a good time to deploy the Bench Boost chip.

However, most of us only have four free transfers to prepare for it, and a Gameweek 21 Wildcard may not be ideal, given the sizeable gap between the two Gameweeks. That’s a lot of time for things to go wrong, potentially leaving you without 15 starters.

Another option, and perhaps the more attractive, would be to Free Hit, though that chip may be best held till further down the line, when we are faced with FA Cup blanks. Alternatively, the Triple Captain chip could be used, but with Liverpool and Manchester City probably playing just once, there isn’t an obvious option as it stands, at least for now.

In all of the Double Gameweek talk, we also shouldn’t lose sight of those playing just once who have good fixtures, like Liverpool who are at home to Brentford.

What is certain, is that it is very hard to plan right now without knowing the full picture, and maybe looking too far ahead is another trap to mindful of. Perhaps the best option is to simply ensure you have two free transfers, so you can react to the fixtures when they are rescheduled.

Football Chatbox posed the ‘time for chips?’ question in a Hot Topic earlier today, with some of the replies on site included below.

thoughts on Lloris or spurs defence? three extra games to play in a Conte defence, seems they are being overlooked to me

      I’m looking at them
It’s either a spurs defender or united defender coming in for the 2 dgw’s.

Proably only Davies but Spurs are looking to sign a left side CB Clement Lenglet.

yes a good option . please be aware of DGW hype - as the article articulates a player in SGW can easily outscore DGW...Spurs/MU/Watford/CP as potential options but don't rip up your teams to accommodate a DGW please.

    Thank you

Also City don't have any double and have good fixtures from GW23 onwards

Cancelo could only MCI player worth keeping. Pep roulette during these times is one risk likely too much.

Currently have Cancelo, Foden and Bernardo and lookng to offload Bernardo to Son at some point. I'm happy to stick with Cancelo and Foden for the time being. Wait and see if the off-field situation is done and dusted. City weren't great in attack with Sterling, Jesus and Mahrez in the front 3 spots.

I have those same players and same plan. If CR7 doesn't train soon, Bernardo to Son this week is my plan B.

I think Son can wait until GW20 (A v SOU) as Spurs are up against a solid Palace team this GW with Andersen back from injury

The biggest issue with this plan is that it blocks Laca to CR7 and demands 2.7 million downgrade, which basically means either Jota or Foden out (-4) or downgrading two players out of Saka, James and Alonso (-8). So getting CR7 may have to wait until Salah can be sold.

GW19 and 20 captaincy is covered so I don't see the need to bring Ronaldo in. I'm probably going to wait until Liverpool v Chelsea in GW21 to offload Salah and consider bringing in Ronaldo

Yes, looks like getting both Son and Ronaldo before that is basically impossible. Too many transfers needed.

I am not certain that is the whole truth. Having likes of Son, Kane, CR7 with cheaper defensive players having two dgw:s might give huge advantage, even season defining.

Yes SGW players can easily outscore DGW players. That's why I always save my FH for a multipal blank GW, no chance of a player without a fixture outscoring one that does.

This is going to get interesting. Chaos is a ladder they say. If there are more postponements and I won't be able to field good starting XI, I will simply start taking hits to get dgw assets. MU and Spurs assets look worth having even without these dgw:s. Yet if this strategy fails, there is a lot to think about.

This was one of the reasons I was happy to play with 6 last week and hold Ronaldo and de gea, got away with it thanks to (c)ancello and hopefully now United can hit a bit of form coming into these doubles

I did sell Ronaldo out for Lacazette. Easy to regret with hindsight, but I can either reverse that now or use the money to get Son. I have also option to keep Laca vs Nor and downgrade Bernardo to Gordon and upgrade Dennis to CR7 (-4). Let us see if Ronaldo is able to train first.

Not sure that’s right, I thought they have to isolate 10 days from symptoms or positive test?

Yes but if they do another test in those 10 days and it's negative then they play. That's my understanding.

Yeah I think it is. I’ve read this a few times over the last year and a half. Could have changed but I’m pretty sure those lot have different rules.

False positive / no symptoms and then negative - what’s the point of isolation

I feel like I'm leaning towards FH for this early double. Don't fancy scrambling about rearranging my team or playing an early WC with things as unpredictable as they are atm.

If 21 and 22 doubles (as well as Afcon) then might WC in 21

Unless your team is in a state, I think using FH is a waste personally.

There's bound to be another big double in future involving more of the big clubs.

My strategy will be to take a couple of hits to get a few more dgw players and leave it at that.

I'm saving my FH for GW30 which will be a multiple blank caused by the FA Cup QF's. Good SGW players that you have already got can easily outscore DGW players in GW21/22. No chance of a player without a fixture outscoring one that does in GW30.

Do we get use the second WC before GW21?

If there were to be DGW in 21 & 22, simply WC for 21?

Walker is going to return. His best friend died with some mysterious circumstances around it, so he's been dealing with that. When he comes back Cancelo slots back over to the left is my guess.

How many double gamesweek players is worth a bench boost in your opinion?

With most of our teams centered around the top 4 I don't really fancy bringing in a load of Palace, Brighton, Southampton etc players just because they play twice.

Me either I'd rather have Pool, City or Chelsea players for one fixture, than players from the clubs you mentioned for two.

I think this is a conundrum that drives many fpl players borderline insane. Frankly, I would advise not to structure your team around a bench boost in a double game-week just for the sake of it (especially with the possibility of additional postponements). Just play it when it feels right.

It's less likely that players play back to back in consecutive weeks.

I'd sprinkle a healthy dose of caution, especially if deploying BB tactics.
