FPL team news: Injury updates ahead of EFL Cup quarter-finals

Before the festive football commences with Gameweek 19, there is a round of midweek EFL Cup quarter-finals involving seven Premier League teams:

  • Arsenal vs Sunderland
  • Brentford vs Chelsea
  • Liverpool vs Leicester City
  • Tottenham Hotspur vs West Ham United

Here is a round-up of Tuesday’s press conferences, with Fantasy Premier League (FPL) team information found on our Predicted Line-ups page and Injuries and Bans feed.

Virgil van Dijk, Thiago, Fabinho, Jordan Henderson - potential Liverpool return dates amid Covid and illness | LiverpoolWorld

LIVERPOOL

Four players are out with Covid – Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara and Curtis Jones – whilst Andrew Robertson begins his three-match domestic suspension for the red card received at Spurs.

“Health comes first so we have to make sure we don’t rush it, that they come back whenever they are ready. People underestimate when it’s 10 days’ quarantine, they think they can play immediately on day 11, but football doesn’t work like this.” – assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders

Jordan Henderson missed Sunday’s 2-2 draw with a regular cold but is available again, although Divock Origi “is still not training with the team” due to a knee injury. Nathaniel Phillips (cheekbone), Adrian (calf) and Harvey Elliott (ankle) are still on the sidelines.

CHELSEA

Thomas Tuchel was quite open with his injury updates here, seemingly ruling out the likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek (ankle), Andreas Christensen (knock) and Trevoh Chalobah (knock) as well as their four known Covid victims – Ben Chilwell, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku.

“The players [with COVID] are OK [but] they are out for ten days before they can be released. We don’t really know when they can play. Nobody is back except for Jorginho. Andreas Christensen is very doubtful and the same for Trevoh Chalobah.”

Jorginho (back, plus an inconclusive Covid-test result) is available again but Hakim Ziyech (calf) may not be. Tuchel will not play N’Golo Kante this time, calling himself “close to irresponsible” for handing the Frenchman all 90 minutes against Wolves.

ARSENAL

Takehiro Tomiyasu was removed after 63 minutes of the Gunners’ 4-1 win at Leeds, which Mikel Arteta says was due to muscular discomfort.

“We decided to take him off, he wasn’t 100 per cent confident to continue in the game, and hopefully he’s not injured.”

Pablo Mari and Albert Sambi Lokonga remain out due to Covid, as Sead Kolasinac (ankle) continues his absence.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

There was good news from Antonio Conte regarding his squad’s Covid situation.

“All the players are now negative, which is good news for us. As you know well, with Covid, you need a bit of time because, for sure, many players at this moment are not so fit because they had to face this situation, but the good news is all the players are available. We have a little bad news in Ryan Sessegnon, he had a problem at the end of the game against Liverpool (on Sunday), he’s the only player with Cristian Romero who is injured.”

A muscular problem is set to keep Ryan Sessegnon out for around two weeks, as Cristian Romero (hamstring) remains out until early 2022.

WEST HAM UNITED

Vladimir Coufal will be suspended for the cup tie, following his Gameweek 17 sending off at Arsenal that couldn’t be served last weekend because of postponement. Centre backs Kurt Zouma (hamstring) and Angelo Ogbonna (knee) are still injured, with Aaron Cresswell pencilled in for a return having missed four matches with a back injury.

“We’re very good. The training ground has been very good and most are okay. We have got one or two with the virus, but most are very good and long may that continue.” – David Moyes

Ben Johnson (hamstring) and Ryan Fredericks (groin) are unlikely to take part at Tottenham.

LEICESTER CITY

With their last two league fixtures postponed due to Covid, it could be a patched-up Foxes squad that faces Liverpool on Wednesday.

James Justin (knee/match fitness) and Wesley Fofana (leg) have been out for a while, with undefined illnesses for Kelechi Iheanacho, Ademola Lookman, Jannik Vestergaard, Ayoze Perez and Hamza Choudhury.

Jonny Evans left the Gameweek 16 win against Newcastle United after five minutes because of a hamstring problem, the same injury as Caglar Soyuncu.

BRENTFORD

After recent Covid problems for Ivan Toney, Ethan Pinnock and many other players and staff, head coach Thomas Frank delivered positive news on the Bees’ current state, having also missed the last pair of matches.

“We have enough. We will have 11 players. We are in a fine place. We had six/seven [positive cases] last Thursday, but after lateral flow and PCR tests, we’ve had zero for the past two days.”

They are still without David Raya (knee), Kristoffer Ajer (hamstring), Mathias ‘Zanka’ Jorgensen (thigh) and Josh Dasilva (hip) but Frank said “let’s see what we will do” in regards to starting forward Marcus Forss.

FPLMarc Newcastle fan that spends far too much time thinking about FPL.

Not for -8 by any means. Ronaldo hasn't been seen in training for about a week so I'm guessing he's one of the first team with covid so he might not be available or fully fit, and Sterling and Bernardo have a great fixture this week as does Lacazette. Can you even afford just Bernardo to Jota?

This month is going to be total carnage, regardless of what happens from this point with COVID. The DGWs are simply not going to reach the potential even close to the player minutes. I'm going to approach this period with my priority being to always have 3 bench players of the quality that I'd expect as first X1 players, with a quality trans that will endure beyond mid Jan and with a handful of players most likely to get the extra minutes, as the lowest priority. That and a DGW Captain obv. Honestly think this is the right order of priorities. It's going to be rotation like we've not seen before

It's happened before a few times to see people who tore up their teams for the promise of extra minutes then get their narrow gains trounced by the better teams in subsequent weeks. I've certainly made that mistake myself. Not going to ignore the DGWs for sure but anyone filling their team full of players like Madison and Cornet and any of the many others with dreadful runs following the DGW could find this ends up counterproductive.

Very low. Arteta played same team for 2 very good results against WHU LEE, all the lads had a rest last night, whilst ESR played 80min. If i had to hazard a guessc probably 10-15% chance, it will likely be same team again

Not what I would WC to but with a hit each week between now and 21 I could get set up for doubles in 21 and 22. Would like Foden but can’t afford another transfer or 2 for that.

If Liverpool have managed to agree to hold on to Mane and Salah until Chelsea then just GW22+GW23 for them. For the likes of Dennis it will really depend on whether Watford have come to a similar agreement or not but under usual rules most players would be gone around boxing day so they have a full week with their team

      1. Eze Really?
        • 9 Years
        2 years, 4 months ago

I think there has to be some giving away by both parties. If it goes forward I think most will play boxing day. it won't matter for me as salah will be moved on to Son that week (calamities apart)

I agree, I understand Liverpool wanting those for a big game, of course, but I still feel it's a bit disrespectful to the tournament and its importance for the players and their countries (if it was the Copa America, for example, I'd be surprised if there was such strong requests to leave it so late). I also don't think holding a player until right before the tournament begins and then sending them off is sensible for the players' welfare, if they become overworked and get a long-term injury then is that one extra PL game before they leave that worth it?

I hear you loud and clear. It is not just Afcon for me; it could be anyone. I live in South Africa and the stigma of Afcon is huge, due to corruption, fixed games etc. I am a firm believer travel abroad, no matter what direction is not wise at this moment in time. However, the greedy clubs are becoming a nightmare atm and money is the decision maker.

Leeds are also very clumsy in their way own box. All points to a Salah haul.

Cue Liverpool winning 4-0 with no Salah involvement.

Clubs should be releasing their Afcon players 2nd, 3rd or 4th Jan

Those who get to the semi finals play up to February 6th.

Fair play and with the Saturday fixtures in January it is the 2 game weeks.

First game back may be a doubt too with travel and possible rest required?

Depends when they get back? Might come home when they get knocked out?

    Team is
    Ramsdale Foster
    TAA Cancelo James White Cash
    Salah Jota Bilva Mount Gallagher
    Watkins Antonio Broja
Two Free Transfers and 2.2 in the bank
Is Bilva and Mount to Son and Saka - leaves 0.7 itb a good plan assuming no cancellations etc.

Fingers crossed not selling DDG & Ronaldo last week was a good decision.

What's the deal with Foden? Has he taken his lashings by missing the last match or will there be more to come?

Anybody know what the go is with Guaita? Seems a bit weird for a goalie to be rested, worried he might not start this week...

There were rumblings he had dislocated his finger.

      https://www.holmesdale.net/page.php?id=106&tid=179794

"He has his little & ring fingers taped together during matches & if you look at his gloves, they are designed for that. I've had dislocated fingers & all they do is tape it up to the next one.

Not saying he should carry on & play, Butland is a capable deputy."

Who is on your shortlist for DGW21&22?

Will probably be able to make 4 moves until DGW21 including one hit. I'm mostly considering Son, Reguilon, Maddison, maybe Ronaldo or Watkins from strikers.

Got DDG & Ronaldo already. Had already earmarked Alonso > Regulion/Davies, so that's a likely move soon.

Salah (CHE) can become Son (DGW: WAT/???) in GW21, if I can't get both.

Agree RE: Maddison. Wood or Cornet also worth a shout.

Already have King & Bowen. Easy to move Saka > Gallagher too.
