FPL Daily: Liverpool win Carabao Cup as Jota and James return

We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points of the day in FPL Daily.

LIVERPOOL WIN CARABAO CUP FINAL

In an entertaining clash at Wembley, Liverpool won a dramatic penalty shoot-out 11-10 after a goalless draw with Chelsea.

The headline news from an FPL perspective was the returns of Diogo Jota (£8.3m) and Reece James (£6.2m) from injury, who both appeared as second-half substitutes.

The latter is of particular interest in light of Chelsea’s potential double-header in Gameweek 28, which you can read more on here.

James is averaging 5.7 points per match this season, and a defensive double-up alongside Antonio Rudiger (£6.1m) is certainly appealing, given the lack of options further forward.

On the injury front, Hakim Ziyech (£7.3m) failed to make the squad for today’s match, along with Andreas Christensen (£4.6m) who has an issue with his achilles. Elsewhere, Cesar Azpilicueta (£5.6m) was forced off shortly before the hour mark with an injury, while Thiago (£5.3m) missed out for Liverpool after picking up a knock during the warm-up.

Chelsea XI: Mendy (Kepa 120), Chalobah, Thiago Silva, Rudiger, Azpilicueta (James 57), Kante, Kovacic (Jorginho 105), Alonso, Mount (Lukaku 74), Pulisic (Werner 74), Havertz

Liverpool XI: Kelleher, Alexander-Arnold, Matip (Konate 90), van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Henderson (Elliot 79), Keita (Milner 80), Salah, Diaz (Origi 97), Mane (Jota 80)

BIELSA SACKED

The FPL Round-up: 8

Marcelo Bielsa has been sacked by Leeds United after a poor run of form that saw his side suffer several heavy defeats.

The Whites have taken just one point from their last six matches (see below) to leave them outside the relegation zone by only two points. During that time, they have conceded a whopping 21 goals and slumped to a 4-0 defeat at home to Tottenham Hotspur in Gameweek 27.

LEEDS UNITED’S LAST SIX MATCHES:
  • Leeds United 0-4 Tottenham Hotspur
  • Liverpool 6-0 Leeds United
  • Leeds United 2-4 Manchester United
  • Everton 3-0 Leeds United
  • Aston Villa 3-3 Leeds United
  • Leeds United 0-1 Newcastle United

At the time of writing, American coach Jesse Marsch is the bookies favourite to take over, with the club expected to announce their replacement as soon as Monday.

Notably, there is potential for their new manager to hit the ground running, given that they have an appealing run of forthcoming fixtures coming up, which includes a double-header against Leicester City and Aston Villa in Gameweek 28.

READ UP ON ALL OF THE WEEKEND’S FPL ACTION

West Ham’s defence, Antonio’s creativity, Jimenez benched: FPL notes

There is still one match to go in Gameweek 27, with Burnley taking on Leicester City on Tuesday, but you can read up on all of the FPL action so far via the links below.

Aston Villa, Leeds United, Newcastle United, Southampton, Watford and Wolverhampton Wanderers all feature and double in Gameweek 28, with several differential options emerging over the weekend.

Need Maddison to score against Burnley and I will be back in top100K for the first time since GW3.
    Crazy season!

Had my transfers lined up and ready to go and now this Chelsea double :/

Still do Ronaldo + Pogba -> Jiménez + Salah (-4) and field this XI or do something different?

    Foster (ARS, wol)
TAA (WHU) - Cancelo (MUN) - Bednarek (avl, NEW)
Salah (WHU) - Maddison (LEE) - JWP (avl, NEW) - Ramsey (SOU, lee)
Kane (EVE) - Jiménez (CRY, WAT) - Adams (avl, NEW)

    (Sanchez, Bowen, Royal, Varane)

Salah in is the obvious choice, and CR7 out is the way to fund it. Not super excited about Jimenez, but he has DGW28 into not blank 30, so might as well since you already have Adams for Southampton coverage. Lacazette could be a more exciting option if you plan to stick 31-> rest of the season, but it's difficult to scrape up the budget with FTs without WC.

I'm basically set on using my wildcard this week (team below), should I bring in a player or two I think is due for a rise, and trigger it now but make my wholesale changes after FA Cup fixtures. The team below, just does not look good for this week.

E.G lose DDG (5.3 buy but can sell now for 5.1) so I can get Sa for 5.2 before he rises to 5.3 tonight?

    DDG | Steele
Trent, Robbo, Cancelo, Digne | Johnson
Salah, Bruno, Bernardo, Bowen | Gray
    Antonio, Dennis | Gelhardt

    ^ Current team

If you're going to do it, do it as early as possible and go for those price rises, if they materialise. Should have done it Friday night! Though I know it's difficult to be sure whether you are or whether you aren't...

Team value shouldn't be a factor at this stage. 0.1 here and there shouldn't matter. Hold off until the Cup games are over (most played by Wed night) so the GW30 situation in clearer.

FH30 planned regardless. Was looking at triple city, triple pool and double (if not triple) chelsea

Cup games could affect quite a bit but it's like Bowen I'm touch and go losing him but his price swing is huge so I wouldn't remove him until last minute anyways.

It's more people like Sa rising by 0.1 will be an issue.

I have a team built that I can afford with 0.1 left in pocket, so more than one price change can price me out...

Have a play with your potential WC team, assuming the FA cup ties go as you suspect. Unless you find yourself with exactly 0.0 and the absolutely perfect team, I'd hold off. You might miss 1 or 2 prices, I doubt more.

yip WC that lot with an eye both of 28 & 29.

Bowen should go and be brought back if necessary after these doubles and blanks

I can only see Trent Cancelo
Salah & Dennis surviving on a WC.

        This isn't the wildcard I had in mind originally, quickly threw this one together;

        Sa, Foster
Trent, Robbo, Cancelo, James, Livra/Ait Nouri
Salah, Son, Maddi, Bowen, 7.1 MID
        Weghorst, Broja, Gelhardt

        * Won't lose Bowen (sell value is 6.7) buy back is currently 7.1, way to be a financial loss to lose him. Also worth noting we beat Liverpool earlier in the season, they play Norwich less than 72 hours before they play us and they play Inter just 72 hours after us (granted Norwich is FA Cup, probably be the squad rotation again and they already have a 2-0 lead over Inter)

          my WC plan is
          TAA, Cancelo, Rudiger
          Son, Salah, Bowen/Foden/Coutinho/Mount/Dias maybe

From there I will have 4 or 5 positions that rotate for the doubles
(2 defenders, 2 mids & 3 forwards) that will be transferred out as necessary or when needed

core team with the rest expendable

I would keep the WC for more desperate times, when you need to purge 5 or players from the team. Other players in your team are as good as any other, so you could hold off the WC and just get rid of the players you absolutely don't want.

Ok to save my FT with this team for GW28? (might use it for Rudiger if Chelsea wins against Luton).

    Ramsdale
TAA, Robertson, Cancelo, Laporte, Ait Nouri²
    Salah (C), Mahrez, Son
    Dennis², Broja²

    (Foster², Gallagher, Bowen, 4.4m)

Only save if not interested in doublers.

I would start Foster over Ramsdale

Yes, I am also thinking about starting Foster, but I am worried that they will not get any clean sheet in their two matches -- they will be playing potential top 6 teams (Arsenal and Wolves). On the other hand, Arsenal clean sheet is much more likely against Watford.

I am interested in doublers, particularly Willock and Coutinho (and Rudiger, if Chelseas wins against Luton). I can sell Gallagher for Willock / Coutinho but the only player I could bench from the playing XI are Ait Nouri or Dennis, both of whom have double fixtures.

(I will not bench triple Liverpool, triple City).

How does this look for a -12 to BB? Bench would be: Ramsdale - White - Saka - Cancelo

    Bruno + Bowen + Edouard + Idah --> Raphinha + JWP + Jimenez + Broja/Adams

All 4 new players would have a double and would play in GW30 (if Southampton loses to West Ham as expected). Also tempted by Maddison against Leeds this week and GW30 against Brentford, if Southampton gets through FA cup. Ignoring Chelsea is the only thing that I think this move is missing, but defense is too settled for me with robbo, Trent, cancelo, white and RAN

At this point of the season, would you sell Maddi or Bowen? Is the latter still a season keeper?

I'm looking to get Maddi soon, think he'll become template fairly soon with a nice fixture in GW30 and three doubles from 33 onwards

I will sell bowen probably for raphinha (or willock or jwp) But thats bcoz i will bb now. U could just bench bowen this week vs liverpool.

I regrettably did Maddy out to JWP this week which didn't pay off, but will be swapping back for GW30 probably.
Bowen is hard to sell! Always looks like getting points.

I'm stuck with Ramsdale through GW30 minimum.

    WC draft

    Sa / Foster
    Saiss / Rudiger / Robertson / Liva / Johnson
    Willock / Saka / Salah / Raph / JWP
    Kane / Lacazette / Wood

This decent enough? Anyone I've missed?

    Coutinho? Chelsea midfielder?

Too focused on next 2 GW's for me. Sa, Foster, Saiss, Livra, Willock, JWP, Wood will be all caught up on games by then. You'll be left in a poor position for the run in from then but if short term gains are important and you don't mind hits and have two FH's then it might do well for you 🙂

You are right, probably is focused these 2 GWs. However, choose some decent players and you can take a hit or 2 later on.

Got a load of Man City, Man Utd and West ham players which I don't think have decent fixtures in the near future.

I feel like this week is the most crucial week of the season.

I'm already dreading it because I see a million different combinations of players and strategies and each of us are on our own path trying to figure out how to navigate it. The swings are going to be huge.

Most of our plans kick in this week in the form of a wildcard, or a BB or a big hit to set up future weeks.

Furthermore, the captaincy is completely up in the air imo. Raphinha, Coutinho, Rudiger, Havertz, Saiss? I have no idea who the best captain is and I will be bringing them in for a hit this week at the expense of the others which means the swings will be even bigger.

Seriously considering "buying" my BB team with a -12 which allows for slightly cheaper wildcard in a few gameweeks.
Different circumstances but I did this last year or the year before when John Stones got 27 and I had a massive BB score.

I think I'm prepared to eat a really big red arrow this week. I'll be on a hit, with only 6-7 DGWs and no BB.

    What moves would u make?
    Thinking-
    Anto-> Broja + Laporte-> James/Rudiger (-4).

    Ramsdale.
    Cancelo, TAA, Laporte, Saiss.
    Foden, Ramsey, Raphinha, Salah.
    King, Lacazette.
    Bach, Tierney, Bowen, Antonio.
    1ft, 2.6m ITB.
WC + 1FH left among chips.
GW28- 4 doubles atm (assuming Ars don't double).
    GW 29- 5 atm.
    GW 30- 6 atm

Thing is do you really expect James to play both games, 3 days apart with newcastle and Lille to follow also with short turnarounds?
I'd play more aggressive and hit King out for Jimenez if not using FH30

    Thoughts please guys:

    Dubravka
    TAA Robertson Saiss Kilman
    Salah Raphinha Coutinho Ramsey
    Jimenez Broja

    Ramsdale Son Lacazette Tierney

    1FT, 0.2itb

Q1: Is BB worth it with that bench?

Q2: Robertson >> Rudiger (using the FT) to get some Chelsea DGW cover ?

    Thanks

Thinking-4 this week ( Tierney to Rudiger and to fund Ramsdale to Dubravka) and BB this team. 10 doublers * assuming Chelsea get double. Tried to be realistic with bench. Thoughts on this BB squad?

    Sá*
    TAA Digne* Rudiger* Robertson
    Salah Son Coutinho* Raphinha* Saka
    Jiménez*

    Dubravka* Broja* Dennis* Saïss*

That's a decent BB id say.
I'm struggling to get Rudiger and a good BB team for less than a -12, therefore not really worth it.

Digne has OK double week 28 is the reason and also plays 30. Tierney double in 29 not so good on paper anyway

fair point. i saw it as 3 games VS 3 games, and might prefer Tierney long term but yeah, can't sell Digne before DGW.
