FPL notes: March injury latest, Maddison pen, Steele mistake + 21 goals

We end our analysis of the Gameweek 35 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) action in our Scout Notes series.

Here, we focus on three Monday matches – Fulham v Leicester City, Brighton and Hove Albion v Everton and Nottingham Forest v Southampton.

Any numbers you see in this article are taken from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data from every single Premier League fixture.

Haaland Foden

This bank holiday bonanza brought a whopping 21 goals in three matches, with big consequences for the battle to stay up.

Everton and Nottingham Forest secured important victories but Leicester’s position is even more worrying and the Southampton relegation is almost mathematically official.

MARCH BENCHED THEN INJURED

For the 60% of top 100k managers that own Brighton’s Solly March (£5.3m), his starting spot wasn’t supposed to be in jeopardy. All league matches had been started until Thursday night’s win over Manchester United and, surprisingly, he was again left on the bench for Everton.

Pre-match, Roberto De Zerbi simply said March was “not in his best moment” but there was an even worse moment later on. Already 3-0 down, March was one of four substitutions made by De Zerbi at half-time.

Before long, the winger was the epicentre of Brighton’s comeback attempt, creating two chances, totalling five penalty area touches and producing one shot on target. Yet he hurt his hamstring whilst chasing back for Everton’s fourth goal and had to be replaced immediately.

The timing of this is unlucky for owners, as the Seagulls are about to have successive double gameweeks. Perhaps March’s new rotation threat would’ve already seen sales take place but the bad-looking injury will escalate these.

MITOMA AND MAC ALLISTER COMBINE

Selling him for Alexis Mac Allister (£5.5m) may be dismissed as a sideways move but similarly-priced alternative replacements seem limited. Here, the Argentine hit the crossbar and soon combined with template choice Kaoru Mitoma (£5.6m) to score a consolation goal, just days after his stoppage-time penalty defeated Man United.

Since Gameweek 23, no Premier League player has taken more shots than Mac Allister (50) and, even though moving backwards into central midfield was expected to limit his threat, the World Cup winner is only bettered by Erling Haaland (£12.4m) since Gameweek 31.

ABOVE: Most goal attempts since Gameweek 31

Owning a penalty taker that takes so many shots is highly appealing, especially one with five fixtures during the final three gameweeks.

DOES STEELE KEEP HIS PLACE?

It’s a bad night for those with both March and cheap goalkeeper Jason Steele (£4.0m). Brighton’s defensive assets lost their clean sheet after just 34 seconds, with Steele later beaten twice at his near post as well as being the victim of an own goal.

As a team, Everton’s expected goals (xG) total was just 2.24 but Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.3m) and Dwight McNeil (£5.1m) both netted twice to pull off a huge south coast shock. In fact, McNeil’s pair of assists means it’s a brilliant 21-point haul – the winger’s best-ever in FPL.

So does this embarrassment mean Steele goes back to Brighton’s bench for Double Gameweek 36? If so, Robert Sanchez (£4.5m) awaits.

MORE RETURNS FOR MADDISON

Meanwhile, the lunchtime match brought a 5-3 goal-fest between Fulham and Leicester. There was previous popularity for James Maddison (£7.9m) ahead of a generous-looking Double Gameweek 29 that preceded Bournemouth at home. He duly blanked in all three and missed the Wolverhampton Wanderers match due to illness.

Yet FPL managers may want to put faith in Leicester’s talisman when he faces the untrustworthy defences of Liverpool and Newcastle United.

Attacking returns have arrived for him in three consecutive matches, with both a goal and an assist at Craven Cottage. Furthermore, Maddison should be back on penalty duties – having missed from the spot last Monday, Jamie Vardy (£9.1m) failed this time before the 26-year-old had some redemption 15 minutes later.

ABOVE: Maddison leads several ‘goal threat’ metrics during the 5-3 defeat

Leicester’s furthest forward player on the average position map, he led the way for shots, chances created, penalty area touches and expected goal involvement (xGI) in this match. No bonus points though, just like two-goal team-mate Harvey Barnes (£6.6m), who remains without any throughout the whole campaign despite netting 12 times.

SCINTILLATING GIBBS-WHITE

Finally, on a day of double-digit totals for McNeil, Doucoure, Barnes, Willian (£5.5m), Tom Cairney (£4.7m) and James Ward-Prowse (£6.1m), three such individuals belong to Nottingham Forest.

A quickfire Taiwo Awoniyi (£5.6m) double put the hosts 2-0 up, with Danilo (£4.5m) setting up the second and then bagging one for himself after a delicious backheel from Morgan Gibbs-White (£5.5m).

Additionally, the former Wolves midfielder bagged a first-half spot-kick and could’ve added another assist late on had Felipe (£4.5m) not been ruled offside. A wasted acrobatic celebration from the Brazilian centre-back.

He is quietly having a brilliant FPL season and is now on 15 goal contributions. His last four matches have brought three goals and three assists, with Chelsea, Arsenal and Crystal Palace to come. He’s an extremely interesting differential option, especially for March sellers.

Lads, is it smart to get Botman in instead of Chilwell and play him before Martinelli? That way I kinda have Martinelli and TAA benched which I don’t really fancy lol…

Have to play TAA this week IMO. Didn't see yesterday's game but watched Leicester at home to Everton last week and they were abysmal, should have conceded far more than 2. I'd fancy Arsenal to put a few past Brighton too (and that was before this weekend's results) so I'd be reluctant to lose Martinelli

I think I'm right in saying Saints are gone now with the maths but I still feel they will not be beaching it and the Saints magician can do stuff before the seasons out.

Guys got a small lead of 20 points and 35 points in my ml with second and third place. Should I play safe? My biggest fear is that they can easily catch me with their two asnl attackers saka martinelli with a good couple of good fixtures. My differentials are Bruno March but now march got injured should I do march to mac or take a hit to go martinelli to have some buffer?

Like March to Mac. If this is the only league that matters, play it safe. Try and predict opponents moves and counter them

Yes, others are secured already over 100 points lead. On 34k now. Mac 4 fixtures vs asnl two fixtures is the worry for me to go and copy martinelli. This is a crucial week I need Bruno to do something big. I am sure asnl gonna run riot on Brighton..

Pen is a big factor for me to go there. I have an idea to go 3 city attackers(mahrez, kdb) for salah, march in 37 and if I am going to do that I may save the transfer and play shaw instead this gw. But Shaw vs martinelli for them scares me.

Going Kdb over salah since the dgw has killed me in my ML. Should I cover off by doing Kdb > Salah now even though it’s a defensive move? Will have cash to do Grealish > mahrez or he isn’t playing

I think ManU will benefit from not having a midweek match and playing at home for a change. They've looked increasingly tired so hopefully ETH has given them some rest this week. So play Shaw (WOL).

Got Steele, MacA, Mitoma, Trip and Isak at the minute.

If I bring in Wilson, it probably means benching Mahrez this GW. No real spaces for a midfield transfer. I could do Leno to Pope, but that would mess up funds for last few FTs.

More on the ignoring side myself. Their players (March owner) have let me down recently and I don’t like their double at all. Newcastle’s double is better, however I do worry about Wilson’s xMins.

For what it’s worth I’m going with Estu, Tripp, Mitoma & Isak and I’m happy with that.

Mac Alistair owners are the jammiest mofos ever. A lucky 8pt cheap pen in the 9th minute of stoppage time against Utd and then the ball rebounds off him whilst he is on the floor and goes in against Everton. Not only that but sneaks a bonus pt off the back of it despite Everton scoring 5 goals. Absolutely unbelievable

Agree. Meanwhile Mitoma has his goal (going in) cleared off the line by Colwill, and March does his hamstring.

Whilst the other player that has annoyed me this season is Odegaard, that's purely as I haven't owned him/keeps pegging me back.

Mac Allister points are the jammiest I have ever seen for ages.

The stats that say he he's taken tons of shots but not scored? Becuase he's not a good finisher.

Will give you the header he had yesterday that hit the bar was a tad unlucky but when a player is taking that many shots and not converting on it, it all points to being an poundland-Nunez when it comes to shooting.

This is why its so difficult to make ground. There always seems to be other players I dont own who cancel out whatever my guys get. Prime example this week. I actually do have Odegaard and also Maddison. Great differentials who delivered but the high EO Salah and Mitoma who I dont have just effectively cancelled those points out. So hard to make progress

Did you watch the game? He hit the post with one header and forced a great save from Pickford with another. He was Brighton's biggest threat and it's no coincidence he was in the right place for that rebound to hit him.

Yeah I did. He was pants until the second half when March, Enciso & Ferguson came on.

Also, I mentioned the header already. He's not a good finisher.

How can you say 'had to be in the right place' when he was literally sunbathing in the mud, not even looking at the ball when it rebounded off the post, rebounded off of him and went in lmao.

Sunbathing in the mud haha he had just narrowly missed putting the ball in the net himself, in a no9 position, which he spent a good chunk of the second half getting into. None of the Brighton players played well in that first half, they were sloppy as a team. I do get it - he's a DM that has scored a pen and a rebound goal, but when you consider his other chances and the stats he consistently posts it's no more luck than any other player. Players get that luck if they're sniffing around the goal and they're the sides no1 penalty taker. That's why we look at that stuff when picking a player

Even with his jammy goal yesterday he has underperformed on npxG+xA by 3g and 3a this season, while Mitoma has overperformed and March has underperformed marginally (about 1g+1a). I've watched plenty of games where he has been pretty unlucky and points have gone begging

...OK? He's still getting the chances, getting into good positions and taking on shots, what's the issue? If March misses sitters or keepers pull off great saves people complain they're so unlucky, Pereira takes heaps of shots from 20+ yards and he's such an amazing enabler and deserves more pts, if it's MacAllister he's a bad finisher so that means he shouldn't have any points? His goal came from being in the box and he's not going to accrue xG by solely taking potshots every time is he?

(And just to clarify, Pereira has underperformed npxG by more than MacAllister, I don't see anyone moaning like this when he gets returns, all I ever see is people complaining that he deserves more)

Yes interesting you should say that. I watched the 2 games of Liverpool's double week as I had Salah on free hit and I didn't think Salah looked like scoring in either game. Then again although he scored against Brentford it was a somewhat scrappy goal as you say. I don't have Salah but his EO is starting to concern me to the point where I'm minded to bring him in just to block off that risk. Tricky though because I still don't think he is worth it and I haven't played an EO game all season. It's just that I have been slowly climbing the ranks up to 56K now and don't want Salah ruining it.

You can plan and use strategy to a certain degree, but this game also contains a big part of luck, bad luck when you're failing, but also much luck when you're doing well.

Goal and bonus yesterday were jammy. Not so sure on the penalty points against Man Utd. It was a penalty and he's the regular penalty taker. A lot of people went for MacA because he was on pens and were rewarded.

I think it's more the fact that the penalty incident resulted from literally the last kick of the game so deep into injury time and only because of VAR. And then on the back of that he gets 3 bonus.

    Morning. 2 FTs...

    Ederson
    TAA Trippier Schar Shaw
    Salah Fernandes Rashford Mitoma
    Haaland Watkins
    Kepa // Estupiñán March Greenwood

Watkins will probably move to one of Wilson/Isak. Will decide who later

    1. GK to play?
    A) Ederson (EVE, A)
    B) Kepa (NFO, H)

    2. Bench one?
    A) Estupiñán (ARS, NEW, both A)
    B) Shaw (WOL, H)
    C) Schar (LEE A, BHA, H)
    D) TAA (LEI, A)

    3. Buy Mac Allister for March, and bench a 2nd person from #2? (If so, who?)

I'm kinda torn on Max Allister. Not sure I want him but any points he scores is game over. (ML rival, 1 point between us, has him too. In fact ML rival has almost exact same team and will no doubt also buy Mitoma for March...)

I went early with my 2FTs because Watkins was dropping. I've possibly got the wrong second Man Utd defender but so be it.

Should I -4 March out for Mitoma? Would mean benching Grealish.

Have had MacAllister for the last 9 weeks so don't need to worry there.

Tough one because Grealish could easily play and do well, however I’d probably take the -4 for Mitoma. His ownership is so high currently so it’s a risk going without him.

If I get TAA next GW I wouldn't able to get both KDB & Bruno with just -4 So what to do ?
A- Get TAA & one of KDB or Bruno for DGW 37
B- don't get Him to get Both KDB & Bruno for GW 37

Depends really if you are chasing or looking to play safe. KDB is very much a differential while TAA is owned by most. If you are chasing it could be worth going the KDB & Bruno route.

"Since Gameweek 23, no Premier League player has taken more shots than Mac Allister (50) and, even though moving backwards into central midfield was expected to limit his threat, the World Cup winner is only bettered by Erling Haaland (£12.4m) since Gameweek 31."

oh really?? i dont own him but only a couple of worldy saves and the post stopped him getting more. there is so much entitlement on here sometimes as in why didn't my players haul? mac was always a good pick so easy on the sour grapes

I take it you haven't been watching play that much. He's quite a bad finisher (good elsewhere on the park) & the points he's had lately have been lucky.

Last non-peantly goal was Leeds in GW27 and even then they got away with serious jam because that was the infamous March' goal' match.

I have and hes a dynamic player. also define luck in a game of football? there is just standing there and influencing nothing around you and the ball smacks you and goes in then theres making your own luck by trying to make things happen like sliding and and trying to get on the end of a cross. its not luck being on pens either if your the best at pens or that shaw made a mess of a corner (which mac took by the way). your just calling it lucky because it happened in the last minute .. most shots taken since GW 31? you cant sweep that under the carpet of 'luck' either.

Didn't say him being on pens is luck? That's the main thing in his favour & Brighton are fortunate to have had the 3rd most pens this year (but they make that luck via their style of play, so no complaints).

If he didn't have pens he's have barely any returns in about 15 GWs.

Arguements you guys are using are purely confirmation bias given points on the board.

I'm also not saying he's a bad player. I'm saying he's not a good finisher and pints lately have been incredibly fortunate.

            He really isn't.

Until the last two March has been superior (and equally, if not more unlucky). In fact March has been the better pick for ages, both positionally and when you watch.

Mitoma has gone off the boil however.

He might be more advanced, just behind the forward. It depends on where Enciso is going to get played, and if that place is where March typically is. Also might drop back of Enciso plays 10 & they slot someone else on the right.

In particular, I'm stuck on the keepers. DDG had a howler, and chances are he got a row from Ten Hag to shape up. Plus they're playing the usually very passive Wolves. Leicester are also scoring despite conceding a multitude of goals

On the other hand, Allison is in better form, and DDG could continue to disappoint. It's a tough one.

Better than I expected given the start. Salah and TAA were my only players to return until yesterday, although some in my MLs don't have both of them so that really helped. Wilson and Isak both starting was a dud in the end but lucky points from Mitoma and MacAllister made it a nice ending to offset Steele's -2. 9 green arrows from 10 now and I've made a little more ground on some in MLs which was important after making a big jump last week after being miles away.
