The Community Round Up

The launch of the Fantasy Premier League game has dominated discussion this week, as the community’s brainboxes leapt into action to help analyse the new prices and a change to the bonus points system. As well as assessing a tactical “bombshell” on the Sky Sports game, we also roll out our regular look at the community leagues taking place this summer.

Hottest Topics

FPL’s revamped Bonus Point System has caused a lot of debate with the community’s eagle eyed members quick to work out which types of players are set to benefit and which will lose out.  Jack(off)Attack was on hand to let us know that defenders could be the immediate winners, with midfielders and attackers set to have to work far harder for their bonus points.

Bedknobs and Boomsticks then took up the baton for the bonus experts by working out which players will benefit. His analysis shows that support strikers like Fulham’s Brian Ruiz, creative midfielders such as Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta and central defenders such as Phil Jagielka, of Everton, are likely to be among the biggest winners.

Demi was among the first to look at some of the best bargains in the FPL game. A tall and  handsome Bulgarian stranger from West London was among those he spotted in his crystal ball.

Some smelling salts was needed to revive  community members left in shock at a combined £26m price tag for Robin Van Persie and Gareth Bale. Many are opting for just one of these heavy hitters but some community members have worked out a way to get both in their team.  Lateriser12 and SAB were among those to show that a credible 15 man team can be achieved with these two giants of the game on board.

Meanwhile, In Tommy We Trust has been using the ancient art of his alchemy to separate the gold dust from the fool’s gold within the FPL game.

Over the last week we decided to ask the community to share their expert advice regarding team selection and strategy in the Sky game. D1sable’s bombshell regarding the captaincy rules gave us more than we had bargained for. His news could prove a gamechanger for Sky players. We await official confirmation about his startling discovery.

Form over fixtures is one of those debates that is intrinsic to Fantasy Football  and when it comes to fixtures they don’t come tougher than Swansea’s. But should a poor opening schedule mean we overlook the investment and new faces in the Welsh side? Saniul certainly thinks a focus on fixtures could be overrated when it comes to a team on the rise such as Swansea.

Green Windmill has looked even closer at the fixture list and poses the question; are there any fixture proof players? Turns out there are quite a few as his excellent analysis shows.

When someone starts a post with ‘sorry for the long post but…’ it’s a sure sign that an epic tome is on the horizon. Pirate’s mammoth 2,500 word thesis on fantasy football strategy was exactly that, offering an armada’s worth of insightful thoughts on the game.

Fancy taking a punt on one of the new recruits in the Premier League? Let Pochettini guide you through their key stats up to now in other leagues.

Finally, McNulty’s look at goalkeeper rotation also caught our eye, especially his warnings about falling into a potential rotation trap.

Community Leagues

FFS UEFA’s Transfer Window Simulation game reached its bartering stage  as teams look to swap their assets. A total of six deals were made last week. Chelsea led by Declan, Stoke run by Dynamic, Aston Villa under the guidance of Hvt and Swansea under Joga Bonito‘s leadership were particularly active this week. Big name players such as Radamel Falcao, Thomas Müller and Hulk found new homes. This week teams are bidding on defenders for the second time and submission of midfield targets must also be made by  23:59 (BST) on Saturday. Anyone looking to sign up for the game can do so here.

What do people think about Dorrans?

    why people don't want Thomas?
are they afraid that they will be tempted to play him?

He has the best chance of scoring over 3pts. for any 4.5 mid, and you are not going to play them anyway, unless emergency

    The myth of Seamus coleman

We know last season he was classed as a midfielder, so now is an oop defender, and is being hyped as such. However despite playing in midfield last season his only attacking returns were five assists and zero goals.
I then tried to work out the pointss difference if he had been classified as a defender last season.

He had 9 clean sheet points for being a midfieder
If classified as a defender that would of been 36 or 27 more points

However as a defender he would of also lost 11 points from goals conceded.

27 - 11 = 16 points extra if he had been classified as a defender giving a total of 90 points for the
season as opposed to the 74 he actually scored

To put that 90 points he would of scored into perspective. Here are some scores of some other defenders now priced at 5 or less

    Coleman 90
    Demil 91
    Bassong 121
    oshea 115
    Distin 109
    Riether 109
    Gorrido 103
    Williams 100
    Davies 99
    Martin 99
    Riise 99
    lowton 99

etc So even if Coleman hadbeen given defender points for last season you can see that his score of 90 would be nothing special , especially s one could argue Everton will be weaker this season.
A player like Bassong looks far better value imo

Bassong & Distin did play aprox. 8 more games (700m) more than Coleman.

After owning Boyce and Ridgewell (not to mention Hangeland too) last year, I am beyond paying for extra for "attacking potential", particularly when there's cheaper links (Alcaraz).

He got injury last season, and this season he will play more advanced as midfielder. Please see his statistic in 2010-11, he delivered 4 goals and 4 assists that show his potential. His role will be like Boyce and Beasojeur in Wigan but with more technical quality.

Going on previous form Norwich and Everyone's CS returns are fairly similar, Everton's defence might even get worse under Martinez. Coleman's FF potential is purely in him getting forward more, very good at that when let and with Kone might have more assist potential, though Kone doesn't convince me. Mirallas might also curtail his attacking returns. I have him so far, being a biased Irishman I know how good he CAN be. Alcaraz might be a better, cheaper, shout.

That post made an error as id gabe him 36 extra points , it should only have been 27 as being a midfielder he had alreay been given one point for each cleanie

If Coleman had of been classed as a Defender rather than a Midfielder last year he would have got an extra 36 points for clean sheet points.
Taking him from 74 up to 110.

I have actually made a slightmistake in my own post , as i gave him -11 for goals conceded when he may not actually have played in a couple of those matches

The points per game is no longer available , but according to wiki he played 26 games

so 90 divided by 26 gives points per game at 3.6

It not as bad as i first thought , when you take points per game into consideration Coleman would of averaged around 3.6 per game which isnt too bad. Although Everton more likely to regress this season , especially if Fellani and Baines leave .
Its also worth considering that he has never played more than 2200 minutes in a season , and plying in midfield he may well be subject to rotation

    So with all this indecision on DGW or not and whether to have RVP and Bale, Would it make sense to leave your enough money to upgrade to RVP? Something like this;

    Boruc / Foster
    Chester / Yanga-Mbiwa / Ridgewell / Turner / Clyne
    Bale / Jarvis / Silva / Thomas / Gerrard
    Cornelius / Giroud / Berbatov

    FT, £6.5m in the bank.

Could go Giroud or Berba to RVP or if the DGW is on go Thomas to Mata if I wanted to. The bones of my squad is still in place

    Any thoughts ?

Not at all. There's some differentials in there for sure. Its an idea that I might run for a couple of days so I can see what happens with the DGW/Rooney/Backbone not to go with RVP for the first 3 GWs.

One thing is for certain, I'm running with a cheap as back line. Tried the balanced approach today and everytime I come back to the squad I don't see a way of being balanced with RVP and Bale and a Defence. Its just not possible

All fair points, but personally I'm trying a balanced defence with no RVP. I think it's unlikely RVP can justify his price tag. At 14, he needs to get at least an assist a game to prevent disappointment, some might even say more. Saving 6 or so with no Rvp is the difference between a budget defender and budget mid and a big midfielder and heavy defender. Rvp +4 +5 OR 8+9+6. I'm going for the latter

Fair enough, if it comes off, I'm sure it'll be very satisfying!

I'm also RVP-less atm, though I do think he'll outscore Giroud early on, despite the tougher fixtures.

I do think though that if they go through with Giroud instead of RVP, you may as well use the money to get Mata/Hazard in. RVP might score loads but Mata's points could be a consolation.

I doubt many people will go with something like that. I think you have to be decisive and go with your gut and if it goes wrong then you just have to accept it and see if you can fix it some how. Having a ready made contingency like that just seems its going to cost you one way or another.

Totally agree with that last sentence. Looks a tougher but better game than late last season where we could afford RVP, Bale, Mata, Walcott, Michu, Baines and still have decent other players.

Either you go into the season with a weak squad and 6.5m in the bank and he does nothing but you haven't taken advantage because you held the money back or he gets off the a good start and you miss out on the points.

    Are you tired? Frustrated?
Everyday it's the same old thing, "Who's in my starting XI?"
Does all this analysis of fixtures & form take up all your time?
Uber-cheapo defenders injured or dropped & can't find a replacement... Not again?!?

Transfering & rotating budget defenders can be an FPL nightmare!
That's why the good people at Merseyside bring you the miracle cure... Baines.

Just look at some of the delicious stats Baines will deliver to you year in & year out.
5 goals, 10 clean sheets, over 20 bouns!
All this totaling an excess of 170pts!

Now, what would you be willing to pay for a player who delivered this consistent a point haul?
    9mil, 10mil?

Well what if I told you today that you could have all this & more for the bargain basement price of 7.5mil! That's right only 7.5mil!

It's so simple, if you follow all the instructional material:
Baines - "Set it & Forget it!"

Don't delay, FPL operators are standing by...

Quick one with Baines, Bale and RvP

          Mannone (Boruc)
          Coleman, Evans, Baines (Turner, McShane)

I am hell bent on doing it and this is what I have so far in terms of cash:

          5.0 - 4.5

          Baines - 4.0 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.0

          Bale - 5.0 - 5.0 - 9.0 - 6.5 (or have 7.0 instead and downgrade a 5.0 to 4.5)

          RVP - 7.5 - 7.0

Some people Baines outscored last year (& most probably over the past 3 years) in no particular order:

        Lampard
        Nolan
        Silva
        Berbatov
        Fellaini
        Yaya Toure
        Benteke
        Snodgrass
        Ben Arfa
        Kagawa
        Mirallas

Why do we let the stigma of "defender" affect buying a player of his fantasy calibre?
If we could buy a midfielder for 7.5mil who averaged 160pts a year we'd do it in a heartbeat!

This is by far the hardest year in terms of choosing a team. I really want to do well this year and I want to make the right decisions early! I have already had one sleepless night and countless drafts!

Van Persie, could we all regret not putting him in at a later stage? Could cost more to get him in if he starts off where he left off last season? This is the biggest decision I am facing.

My defence at the moment is looking rather shocking. Is it ok to accept not getting very many clean sheets/ points etc at the back and focusing more on a much better mid/att?

Blah Blah Blah, maybe I should just do autofill and hope for the best.

It sure is tough this year. With the prices this year we are seeing a lot of different players in the RMT posts. I think you just have to go with what you think is best to start but make sure you respond quickly to changes once the season has started. I've always tended to take a patient approach early on but this year I am planning on starting off doing Sunday/Monday transfers and to try and get myself into a good spot early doors.

as Bale is such a 'pace relying' player, do we reckon he can peak for another 5 yrs or so?
    or just around 3yrs?

look at owen for example, once the pace is gone, they are just another normal player.

It depends. Giggs was a pace player once upon a time too. If they are good enough they can adapt to the loss of pace.

giggs ia a really rare case, and I don't think bale is as 'football intelligent' as giggs.

At Bales age most people would have said the same about Giggs though. I don't think anyone outside of Spurs/Wales really would know how intelligent Bale is as a footballer right now.

No he's more of an athlete than someone such as Owen. If anything I imagine he'll only get slightly faster and stronger similar to C.Ronaldo, has at least another 4-5 years if he can avoid injury.

Not sure he is, free kicks, corners etc, shots around the box even tap ins. Owen at his peak would have been nowhere near as fast as Bale so slowing down would have had a greater impact.

his shots around box all rely on his pace to get those chance.

I think he will be scoring Rooney like goals when he is older.

I don't mean to boast but my team is quite easily the best that I have seen on these forums so far. It is certainly better than Puntmasters (although that ain't saying much!)

    Mannone (boruc)
    Koscielny Nastastic Clyne (Baker, Mcnaughton)
    Bale Hazard Walcott Koren (Thomas)
    RVP Lambert TheAnelka

The big guns strategy might pay off if they all fire early but it really does damage your team.

That defence looks horrible to me, and Anelka won't start up top.

Stunning turn around. When Bairstow came in I was thinking ok if they can just dig in and get it back to 150 they'll have gone a good way to getting England back in this.

Despite the two centuries, Jonathon Trott remains England's best batsman. Anyone who disagrees with that has clearly not been following Enlgish cricket over the last two or three years
