Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Mid-Price Defenders

We roll out our third article on this season’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) player list this afternoon. Having assessed the Goalkeepers and Budget Defenders, we now cast an eye over the mid-price backline options, focussing on those players in the 5.0 to 5.5 bracket.

FPL’s decision to price Arsenal’s defence under 6.0 looks to offer Fantasy managers strong value next season. The Gunners conceded just 37 times in 2012/13 – the second best backline in the league – with Per Mertesacker once again looking the most secure option under Arsene Wenger. The German registered 135 points last season and with three goals to his name, seems the Gunners’ first-choice central defender; he would have ended last term as fourth highest defender in the new Bonus Points System, had it been implemented. Laurent Koscielny may transpire to be a viable alternative, though – he ousted Thomas Vermaelen from the picture as the season unfolded and scored twice in 20 starts over an injury-hit season. Although Wenger still looks to have faith in Bacary Sagna as a first-choice right-back, question marks hang over the other side of the Arsenal defence, with neither Kieran Gibbs or Nacho Monreal assured of starts.

Two goals and four assists sum up Matt Lowton’s attacking potential for Villa but with cheaper alternatives in Paul Lambert’s backline, it’s difficult to justify splashing the cash (5.0) on the raiding right-back, bearing in mind his side kept a mere five clean sheets in 2012/13. Seamus Coleman has the potential to be one of the bargains of the season under new Everton boss Roberto Martinez. If, as expected, he’s utilised on the right of midfield in a 3-4-3, the 5.0 priced Republic of Ireland international will be snapped up for his attacking potential alone and should be a highly sought-after Fantasy commodity in 2013/14. Staying on the subject of right-backs, Fulham’s Sascha Riether will be looking to replicate a debut season at the Cottage which harvested a goal and six assists. At 5.0, though, he is less friendly on the budget than team mate Fernando Amorebieta, at 4.5.

Jamie Carragher’s retirement is likely to afford Fantasy managers a strong mid-price Liverpool alternative next time out. Both Kolo Toure (5.0) and Martin Skrtel (5.5) are vying for the role alongside Daniel Agger – if the Ivorian gets the nod, he’ll be snapped up by Fantasy managers aplenty as a route into a backline that registered 16 clean sheets last season. Bearing in mind he’d also be cheaper than both Liverpool’s keepers and Toure has the potential to be a significant asset over 2013/14 if he forces his way past Skrtel in the Reds’ pecking order.

Matija Nastasic remains under the 6.0 mark at City. The young Serbian has been priced at 5.5 and is seen as the ideal partner for Vincent Kompany in Manuel Pellegrini’s defence – the new manager’s intentions are yet unclear, though, and with a more expansive style of play expected, City may struggle to deliver the same level of resilience which has produced 18, 17 and 18 clean sheets over the previous three seasons. The likes of Micah Richards and Joleon Lescott are similarly priced but may struggle for regular game time by comparison, with Nastasic looking the most secure of City’s mid-price options under the Chilean.

Over at Old Trafford, both Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans will set you back 5.5 but, again, there remains uncertainty over David Moyes’ preferred starters at the back for United. Evans produced three goals and a pair of assists in just 23 appearances last time out, though, and if he can finally cement a role as a regular under the new regime, the Northern Ireland centre-half has the attacking edge over his team-mate.

With a goal and four assists to his name last season, Davide Santon was the most attacking of any Newcastle defender. If he can mirror his 2012/13 displays, the Italian looks the pick of Newcastle’s 5.0 priced defenders but with cheaper options elsewhere in Alan Pardew’s back-four, the Italian could struggle for our attentions. Certainly, there’s no doubting the ability of Mathieu Debuchy, who’ll be looking to improve upon a return of a single assists in 14 appearances since joining up at St James’ Park in January.

Seb Bassong and Russell Martin will both set you back 5.0 as a route into a Norwich defence that produced 10 clean sheets in the season gone by. While Bassong looks nailed-on at centre-half, with Steven Whittaker providing competition for Martin’s right-back berth, Michael Turner’s 4.5 price tag plays a part in how we assess the Canaries. Considering all three notched three times last term, Turner looks the best value of the trio.

The Stoke defence all come in at mid-price after a season which saw them concede just 45 times – only two more goals against than United. With Tony Pulis gone, however, there’s a feeling they will struggle to keep out their opponents and as new boss Mark Hughes prepares to go on the attack, the Potters may not offer the same value we’ve come to expect. New boy Erik Pieters (5.0) will be tasked with bombing forward down the left and is cheaper than central defensive pairing Robert Huth and Ryan Shawcross, at 5.5 apiece.

Angel Rangel’s three goals and an assist in 2012/13 have persuaded FPL to elevate the Swansea right-back to 5.5 – the priciest option of any in Michael Laudrup’ backline. Ashley Williams and Chico should guarantee starts in the centre of defence at 5.0 apiece. Intriguingly, Williams’ displays would have seen him finish as second top defender (and fourth overall) in the new Bonus Points System, were it implemented last season – the fact he failed to produce any goals or assists highlights its not all about attacking contribution. Ben Davies’ game time looks anything but secure now that Neil Taylor is back in contention. With Michel Vorm similarly priced between the sticks, the Dutchman’s save point potential and propensity for stopping spot-kicks may well make him the best Swansea option but with United Spurs and Liverpool in the opening four Gameweeks, faith in the Swans defence is understandably diminished from the off.

Fit-again Younes Kaboul is the most intriguing option at the back for Tottenham. Coming in at 5.0, the Frenchman started Gameweek 1 last year but failed to play again due to injury – he is favourite to get the nod as Jan Vertonghen’s central defensive partner, with his pace crucial to Spurs’ high defensive line, though there’s the possibility Andre Villas-Boas may utilise rotate Michael Dawson and Steve Caulker (both 5.0) in order to maintain the trio’s fitness. Benoit Assou-Ekotto (5.5) may remain in the driving seat for the left-back role – the Cameroon international has competition from Danny Rose but FPL’s decision to classify the latter as a midfielder virtually kills his Fantasy appeal.

Gareth McAuley is the priciest option at the back for West Brom. The centre-half comes in at 5.5 after racking up three goals and three assists last season but despite playing six more games than Ben Foster, outscored the keeper by just eight points in FPL. Foster, at 5.0, is likely to prove better value due to save points, while the likes of Liam Ridgewell and Jonas Olsson also mirror the keeper’s cost. At West Ham, Joey O’Brien has rocketed from 4.0 to 5.5 this season – the most expensive defender on offer under Sam Allardyce. Razvan Rat, at 5.0, looks more secure at left-back but with James Collins offering a 4.5 priced route into a backline with 11 clean sheets in 2012/13, many may be content with the former Villa man instead.

Finally found a way to have both RVP and Bale in one team, would appreciate any feedback.

    Boruc (Lewis)

Coleman - Yanga MBwia - Clyne (McShane, Baker)

    Hazard - Bale - Koren - Walcott - Colback

RVP - JRod - Benteke/Negredo, if he signs

    Thanks lads!

Another 4.5 who may be worth a look , Pardew is talking him up . Not much in terms of attacking points but could be a cheap way into the newcastle defence

I see the scouts struggling to work out how to stop the pages moving past so fast.
Think the forum needs to be split into sections.
One for rate my teams , another for transfer talk and a section for strategy.

Firstly, HC is not designed to stop pages moving fast (A ridiculous misconception). It is designed to keep the best topics and discussion for easy viewing. This can be done when you filter by discussion rating or by sticky. HT's are also a useful feature to quickly get to the cream of the crop.

It's a really tough one to call, there really is no easy solution. This time last year, a few of the more regular posters resorted to going to previous posts for a discussion, but I'm not sure if the scouts were such a big fan of it as it fragmented the community somewhat, and there's also simply a big increase in posters, year on year.

The problem with this is that we would be torn between the various threads; we would inevitably miss out on content on those we aren't following.

But I take your point about the current solution; the fact is, people don't tend to want to revisit previous posts as much as they would like to keep up with comments 'at the cutting edge'.

HC goes someway to addressing this problem with the hot topics and the stickies, but I've heard it said that in order for the system to work at its best, we need to use it in an optimal way. It's a bit like traffic on a motorway: if all cars travel at exactly 50mph, every car will get to its destination faster. But individually, each car will want to speed up a bit, leading to traffic jams.

Maybe that seems an odd analogy but basically I don't think there IS a perfect solution. We should probably try to embrace HC as the best solution we have.

Good point on optimizing HC. As for the above exchange...Oh devilish one, if that's really you, give these guys a chance to develop the moderating element. I'd argue the DZ might be a great place for the moderators to sort through any bugs in the system as far as counter intuition seeming to be counter community. There is clearly a value system being developed and expressed here.

Moderators, assuming traffic has increased with the launch, I think a FFS post reminding people how HC and the other new features can best be used would be helpful since many of us took a much needed break from FPL and this site in the last month or so and would love to see the system work. I for one am not sure what the +- system is nor how a comment turns green. Does a moderator do that? Or does one hit a certain plus rating?

Again, thanks, and I look forward to some bourbon infused DZ drafts once things get underway.

The - + thing is useful for everyone because the community itself can make judgements as to what is a good contribution to FFS. This gives the post a rating which when you sort by discussion rating would be nearer the start of the thread. Try it out and 'sort by discussion rating' or even 'sort by sticky'

Nice post on Seamus. I feel many of us are using the past this week as we try to project the future, and it doesn't quite work that way. Another one that is nagging at me... is Bale really worth 4.5 more than Dempsey? If I only use the past season for comparison I not only look at their pts but also subconsciously remember their prices and how much Dempsey failed while Bale flourished from basically the same starting point. But now that they are so far apart in price, I have to assess Clint, or Siggy for that matter, not as last years failure but as a viable alternative to Bale.

Thanks mate, I just don't know if Dempsey will start enough to invest in him. Same goes for Siggy. And then you have Holtby at 6.5m who is a very very good player. It's sad to say but they will be very difficult to invest in until we see what the preferred lineup is. I actually can see one of Siggy or Dempsey leaving to get more first team football. Seems ludicrous for either of these guys to be wasted on the bench.

Haha, thanks yeah I think a public notice might help; on the voting system etc, but mainly on how to best use the new site. I'd like to see fresh posts popping up as often at the beginnings and in the middle of threads as much as at the ends...perhaps not an easy goal. But I'm assuming HC is intended to 'lateralize' the debates, if that makes sense, rather than having strictly linear discussions.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback, I read (and rated) your own with interest. Catch you later! 🙂

Evening. You raise a good point about the RMTs in particular. Fair enough to want to avoid splitting into forum style, but maybe that type of post in particular could get its own space. Everything else could stay and the sense of community (which I would argue has little to do with an RMT) would be maintained.

I'd also like to thank you green hatted chaps for wading into this muck and trying to help all of us out. As a mostly Deadzoner, I find the daytime pace almost impossible. Not sure if I've become a cranky old man in FFS years, but the DZ seems to have what some claim the community used to be like.

I see your point, but I will give some counter arguments for the sake of discussion. I'm not saying I agree or disagree.

I think one of the benefits of HC is that it encourages people to look at more than just the current page. With the top rated comments, sticky posts and hot topics being sortable, the good stuff should be easier to find.

Maybe, as users, we need to adapt to this and start looking back at previous pages and/or continuing old discussions.

As for RMTs, they are part of what this site is about and if you put it somewhere else, it wouldn't work IMO. They are part of the general fantasy football discussion.

I disagree. He wouldn't see quite as much of the ball but the difference wouldn't be that great imo. He'd still be the most dangerous player on the pitch and he'd still be taking shyteloads of shots.

I may well be starting the season without any United players. If Rooney leaves, then I'll definitely have Kagawa. It's too hard to facilitate RVP and Bale around a solid team. Although RVP can score against anyone, i'll see how United start under Moyes first.

Interesting. City and Chelsea are so appealing for the opening weekend but they both are looking like Spurs did at the beginning last year, when VDV (replaced by Dempsey) Bale Siggy made their midfield a minefield. I'm hoping one will emerge like Bale did, but with all of their extra commitments, not sure we will get such a clear cut sense for awhile, especially with Chelsea having a blank and then the intl break right after. Would love that guy at that price.

According to the stats, Aspas may be in the same mould as Suarez; in the sense that they are both greedy players (perfect for fantasy football!) Please find their stats for the 12/13 season below:

    Celta Vigo:
    1. Iago Aspas 36 starts 12 goals 102 shots 49 on target 7 assists
    2. Augusto Fernández 36 starts 6 goals 59 shots 19 on target 5 assists

    Liverpool:
    1. Luis Suárez 33 starts 23 goals 187 shots 72 on target 5 assists
    2. Steven Gerrard 36 starts 9 goals 93 shots 32 on target 9 assists

As we can see both players tend to take a lot more shots than their team mates and end up with a lot more goals. I know this is not 100% accurate in stating that Aspas is the next Suarez, but one thing I have learnt from fantasy football is that if a player takes a lot of shots, his chances of scoring goals increase considerably. (duh!) I remember shots off target equaling -ve PPI in the previous system, how bad are shots off target in the new system, anyone care to share their view?

I expect Boruc to be number one. Maybe some people got both just to be sure. It would make sense if you think Saints will do well in defence, though it does use up the extra playing place, with one always benched.

    J Rod Vs Lambert

Have just been having a playaround with the comparison tool.
Wanted to see how Lamberts stats compared , before and after Mauricio Pochettino took charge
I compared gameweeks 1-22with gws 23-38 with averages ticked.

    There is a big difference,

    GWs 1-22 a goal every 180 minutes
    GW 22-38 a goal every 294 minutes

Although strangely he actually had more goal attempts in the 22-38 GWs

His partner in crime J Rodriguez experienced the opposite.

    GW 1-22 a goal every 494 minutes
GW 22-38 goal every 327 minutes

Its not just the goals per minute that improved , nearly all his stats improved dramatically This appears
to support the forum view that J Rod is on the up , although he still only registered a goal every 329 minutes , but thats not far behind Lamberts GW 22-38 and if current trends continue he will soon overtake

With J rod at 6. and Lambert at 8 J Rod looks much the better value

      Minutes per goal attempt

      GW 1-22 lamber 36.8
      GW 1-22 J Rod 35.3

      GW 23-38 Lambe 32
      GW 23-38 J Rod 21.5

This stat highlights J Rods dramatic improvement in involvement. However it also shows that Lambert is the better finisher of the two as he has a higher conversion rate

Also J Rod at 23 has room for considerable improvement , Lambert at 31 can only really decline.
Seriously thinking of bringing in J Rod now

If memory serves me correctly Lambert played more of a wide roll towards the end of last season. I remember because it was frustrating as a Ricky owner. He did pick up more assists towards the end as well. Penos seemed to be his main source of goal. I am starting the season with JRod.

Yeah I'll second that notion. I seem to remember him going wide or dropping a bit deeper. JRod ended up being the main guy up top. I was a Lambert owner towards the end of the season as well.

J-Rod is on the up, agreed. And I can see him scoring more goals next year, certainly double figures. So if that is all you require from a 6mill attacker, get him in.

Lambert however can afford to drop goals if he must, because his link up play is second to none at Southampton and definitely one of the best in the league, he brings many players into play and creates a lot of goalscoring opps. with knock downs, lay offs, through balls and even crosses when he drifts out right...

The fact Lambert is on free kicks, pens and offers the best assist potential along with his great eye for a goal, makes me want to spend the additional 1.5mill.

Would it be wise to go with Cech and a 4.5m keeper?

If there is a dgw1, then I may start with Cech. But longer-term, I would not want to spend more than 9.5 total for two keepers, especially with all the decent options available.

Reading too much into pre-season games can backfire horribly...

Last season Hazard came to Chelsea with a big reputation and has turned out a fine EPL & FPL player. His pre-season was quite awful though, even tripping up over his own feet. Not getting him. Look what he did in the double week first up, 21 points I think.

One pre-season even Leiva Lucas attacking output was good. Liverpool overall were looking quite attacking and at about 5mil Lucas was going to be a very handy 5th mid. No.

All those other 4.5 or 5.0 strikers in the 'weaker' teams going great guns that will never see Premier League pitch time.

Then there's names like Boselli and Zaki etc... horror stories...

    Straight out Naievity and gullibility...

    More research required...

Anyone fancy Santon instead of Coleman in that 5.m bracket for the 1st few fixtures. City(A), Hammers(h), Fulham(h) Villa(A) and Hull(H) is a kind run of fixtures and the lad has an assist in him if all else fails.

I'm not betting on Newcastle to get 15 CS again, but i'm willing to bring in a defender from them when the fixtures fall kindly I think. Would prefer one of Taylor or the french cb, but don't want to risk it early doors.

it's a cheap attempt at Arsenal coverage and Wilshere was doing some good attacking last year with little fantasy points. I could make him Snodders but I've never been convinced by him. Maybe more of a chance of points with this RVW character.

got to have two playing goalies at the start I think. Clean sheets are a bit of a lottery in the opening stages. Having a couple of 4.0s is okay if you are willing to waste transfers getting rid. Not sure about Anelka.

I know this is the deadzone but I'm in America lol...so I was thinking how City might line up and idk it's hard to say and pick which player is worth owning, but here's my guess so far, of course this is mere speculation and anything can happen.

    - Note that Jovetic is an extremely versatile player in my opinion so we can see him anywhere in the the attacking trident. Jovetic does have some footwork so I kinda expect him to be used on the wing but idk.

    - If Pellegrini decides to go a 4-3-2-1, I expect Aguero to play in behind Negredo as Negredo is more of a poacher and Aguero does like to run and dribble.

    - I'm really tempted to get Negredo if he's cheaper than Aguero, ppl on here been saying he's too slow but that doesn't matter; strikers are finishers not sprinters. RVP is slow and still bangs em in(not for $14m though...i digress lol)
Negredo is only 27 which is when most strikers hit their prime just about...and thats not that old people(Ronaldo is 28 and if he came to the team that you support, the LAST thing you would say is he's old) anddd Negredo's birthday is August 20th(wikipedia we love) so when City plays on the 19th maybe he'll want something to celebrate...hattrick maybe?

Anyways just saying, take it or leave it, and yes I'm a biased City fan, and what?

I mean he's 23, so if he flops this season, then sure you can call him overrated...but i don't think that can be said justttt yet.

I would agree with that formation and I would expect Negredo would start with Aguero with the latter dropping a bit deeper from time to time. I'm hoping Negredo is a fair price because I'd rather him than Aguero.
