The Sun Dream Team – Selection Guide – Goalkeepers

Having re-introduced the Sun Dream Team (DT) last week, we now begin a series of articles that will help guide team selection in preparation for the season kick-off.

Over the course of our analysis, we will examine each position and assess the factors that can govern selection, including specific Dream Team strategies and an insight into last season’s data that will help us discuss the various options on offer.

We begin, as always, at the back, running the rule over our options between the sticks.

The Strategies

The goalkeeping position is one that’s easy to dismiss. Across the Fantasy games it’s often neglected, with genuine resentment brewed when we’re forced to address it with a transfer. In Dream Team, with just 12 trades over the season, this is certainly the case.

Another factor stacked against the maligned Dream Team keeper is that, compared to the other positions, they typically generate far fewer points. Chelsea’s Petr Cech was the top scoring stopper on offer last term, registering a tally of 156 points – a total significantly boosted by domestic and European cup campaigns that earned him a huge 59 starts in total, 14 more than any other keeper. Ranked below Cech, only Joe Hart, David De Gea and Pepe Reina managed to edge above the 100-point mark. The table below lists the top ten goalkeepers based on last season’s scoring.

Top Ten Dream Team Keepers by Overall Points 2012/13

Comparing these tallies to the other positions, we find that there were no less than 19 defenders who earned over 100 points, with Leighton Baines outscoring Cech by a 41-point margin. The gap is even wider when we look to midfielders and forwards, with Gareth Bale’s tally more than double that of Cech with a mammoth 331 points. A total of 35 midfielders and 24 forwards all scored above the 100-point threshold, compared to the four keepers.

There are several factors at play here. Goalkeepers typically find it harder to earn the 7+ Sun ratings in matches (worth 3 points), with only four (Cech, Simon Mignolet, Mark Schwarzer and Brad Guzan) collecting these on more than 20 occasions last season. In contrast, we saw 10 defenders, 22 midfielders and 10 forwards all reach this threshold.

This is also reflected in Star Man awards (worth 5 points) – Julio Cesar’s five was more than any keeper, thanks to his frequently busy displays behind a fragile QPR back four. Cech, as the top scoring stopper, earned just a single star man award with team-mate Juan Mata snaffling no less than 15. Quite simply, then, the keeper can be overlooked and overshadowed and this has a marked impact on their DT totals.

That’s not to say there aren’t deals to be done; rewards to be had for a bit of foresight and research. West Ham’s Jussi Jaaskelainen was superb value last term, offering 85 points for a paltry £1 million. Only four players (Michu, Jay Rodriguez, Morgan Schneiderlin and Christian Benteke) delivered better points per million DT value.

This is the type of return on investment we’re looking for from our keeper. We either shop for that kind of bargain, confident that we can find a regular starter who will return double figure clean sheet returns and regular 7+ ratings, or we spend big and find that assured asset who will possibly, with the help of a cup run, get close to 20 shut-outs.

The transfer windows aren’t a prime concern with this position. We can make our selection with these in mind but, in truth, our trades are surely better spent elsewhere. We’re ideally looking for a “fire and forget” option: the one player we can sign and leave for the duration of the season, freeing up our transfers for midfield and up front.

The Players

A few days ago, the goalkeeping situation was somewhat fuzzy but, with news of Pepe Reina’s impending loan move to Napoli, suddenly the path to our Dream Team keeper looks far clearer. Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet, priced at just £3 million, now stands out as a clear first choice stopper behind a defence that helped Reina to a total of 100 DT points, a fair return for his £3.5 million price tag. Mignolet is cheaper this time around and arrives having earned 7+ Sun ratings on 21 occasions: only Cech, in 19 more appearances, exceeded this.

While Mignolet is unlikely to attract similar ratings playing in front of a solid Liverpool back four, this will surely be offset by improved clean sheet returns. While you can also plunder Kolo Toure to cover Liverpool’s defensive potential, the lure of Mignolet, as a more secure starter, looks to be firmly in his favour. There is even a strong case to acquire both and double on Brendan Rodgers’ defence – a rearguard that was second only to Man City for league shut-outs (15 in total).

The one drawback to Mignolet is the lack of European appearances. We saw how this influenced Cech’s tally last term (72 points from European matches) so this has to be a consideration.

To acquire the potential offered by European starts, we have to look to the usual cast of heavy-hitters. Led by Cech and backed by Joe Hart and David De Gea, these assets offer alternative routes and we have to consider that, while they will play behind rotating defences, their security of game time, particularly in the league, looks strong.

The trio should push well over the 40 appearances mark and that consistent level of starts looks hard to find in each of those defences. Domestic cup rotation looks an issue but, in Europe, all three should feature – at least until they suffer a Champions League exit.

Significantly, Cech can be acquired for £5.5 million compared to the likes of Branislav Ivanovic and David Luiz, who have been slapped with £6.5 million price tags. Similarly, De Gea is 0.5 less expensive than the likes of Patrice Evra and Hart is £6 million to Vincent Kompany’s £6.5 million. There are cheaper options across these defences but, as always, question marks hang over their security of starts and vulnerability to rotation.

Arsenal’s Wojciech Szczesny is another worthy option to consider. He’ll face another Champions League campaign and currently looks fairly assured of his start between the sticks at the Emirates. At just £4 million, you’d have to take a chance on the starts of either Kieran Gibbs and Bacary Sagna to find cheaper coverage of Arsene Wenger’s defence.

Europa League campaigns bolster the appeal of both Michel Vorm and Hugo Lloris, although there is every chance we’ll see rotation should either Swansea and Spurs make progress. Vorm, at £3 million, looks an option behind a back four that should improve on last season’s meager defensive returns. Lloris, priced at £4 million, looks less appealing but has nonetheless tempted over 17% of DT managers so far – more than any other keeper. While the Frenchman offers assured league starts in front of a rotating back four, Brad Friedel could well see domestic cup and Europa League action and the lure of Jan Vertonghen, albeit at £5.5, as an assured goalscoring defender, would seem to count against Lloris.

Plunging down the price brackets, West Ham’s Jaaskelainen again appears to offer strong value, despite a hike to £2 million this time around. The Finn will surely be ever-present behind Sam Allardyce’s defence and a cup run could see him push above the 100-point mark this time around.

Similarly John Ruddy and Villa’s Brad Guzan have some appeal if you’re set on being miserly in this area. Guzan kept just 6 DT clean sheets over the season but was one of the more consistent performers in terms of 7+ ratings, with 20 returned over the campaign. At just £1.5 million, he’s a risk but an assured starter that liberates a lot of cash for elsewhere in our squads.

As for Ruddy, his last campaign was tainted by injury but he will be expected to return a close to ever-present season for Norwich and could easily justify the £2.0 million price tag if Chris Hughton’s side can kick-on this term. The Canaries appear to have bought well over the summer and Ruddy could be on track for double figure clean sheet returns, particularly if they can muster a cup run.

Dream Team is long established as one of the biggest players in the UK Fantasy Football market, attracting a huge audience wowed by the most substantial prizes on offer. Once again, this season, there’s a huge £500,000 prize pool to be divided up. Registration for teams and leagues opens on August 1 but you can select your lineups right now.

Fantasy Football Scout will be running an official Dream Team league which will launch on August 1, in addition to further guides and articles over the season to support the monthly game and to offer advice prior to the Transfer Windows. View our earlier article for more information on the game.

B followed by D depending on game time.

We'll likely no more before ko as mourinho can be pretty good with team info and wasn't that heavy on rotation the last time he was at Chelsea. Realistically I think it's between torres and lukaku for striker spot and I don't think torres will be a mourinho type of player so I think Lukaku might just get the majority of starts.

The good thing with chelsea is that they have a tough enough start so we can probably let them lie and see what way JM sets them up.

Anyone looking to rotate Anelka with someone should think about Shane long at wbrom. If Lukaku was second choice behind Long and dropped for the big teams due to long's better ability to break on his own then Anelka will be rotated even more imo. The only issue would be where 34 year old Anleka comes off the bench for long and vice versa

Thats the point JK, even though Long didn't score a lot Clarke obviously played him for his workrate or saw something that made him play Long over Lukaku. I don't see Anelka doing any better

Yes I would think thats the way they will go Adam but the lone striker will be Long the majority of the time going on last season. I don't see Anelka having the legs to be the lone striker and even if he did he is not as good anymore as lukaku is now and Long was played over lukaku more often than not.

That would be an issue as well yes Demi but I think having a striker spot taken up with a 34yr old rotated has been striker would be the bigger issue 😀

My post was a bit tongue in cheek as I just don't see how anyone could think Anelka will be nailed on when Lukaku who was on fire and far better than Anelka was rotated with Long. The main reason Lukaku got so much time near the end is long was out with an injury for a while.

Quick question : what's the deal with Suarez's contract? From what I've read, Arsenal made an offer of the same value of his release clause, but apparently it's not enough, because he has an additional clause in his contract.

    What is this mysterious clause?

      It's not a release clause.
It's a clause setting a figure of 40m to allow him to TALK to the bidding club.
      Liverpool want 50m.

It's not a release clause, it's more abstract. It means it's an offer they need to listen to and make the player aware a bid has been made and let him talk to the club. They do not have to sell though.

      1) Yanga sub at best imo Saylor the "British" influence on the team and possible capt

      2) Corny untried and untested, Rade Prica came to epl to Sunderland a while back with a better record in danish super league (sic) 19 goals in 32 games and was a complete disaster. I think Corny will be eased in and Cambell will likely play more than Corny

      3) snodgrass to pilkinton possibly to free up 1m. Pilkington would have scored 6pts less if you extrapolated his minutes out to the same as Snodgrass's last season. He missed a large part of the last two seasons due to injury when he has not been an injury prone player previously so he could be a much better option if he can stay fit (just an idea)

      4) Koren couldn't cut it physcially in the epl last time he was there when he was younger (he is turning 33 in sept) so I doubt he will this time either but he is a cheapish gamble if you want to chance him. I wouldn't be in favor though.

      5) Sou are looking to offload Lambert from what I have seen and are actively looking for a big name fwd to replace him. Plenty of options at this price though so you should be able to switch should you need to.

Assuming most have Walcott. If you were considering a double up for Arsenal's great opening fixtures ; would you go Cazorla or Giroud?
I'm leaning towards Cazorla as he looks set for a good season with the new BPS system.
Plus I just don't rate Giroud highly.

  27. A New Way To Assess Value
    In Tommy We Trust
    • 13 Years

    With reference to Home Run Baker post regarding VORP - Value over replacement player. I'll quote his previous post;

"However, what was missed in this very interesting post, was a similar concept relating to points scored. In baseball (shudder) there is a concept known as VORP - Value Over Replacement Player - designed as a means to judge the contribution a player makes to a team relative to a replacement squad player. In FPL a 'replacement player' might be a notional nailed on 4m DEF, and one could calculate from historical data what such a player might be expected to contribute in fantasy points. That notional replacement value would then become the baseline for calculating points scored. Then value would be (pts minus replacement points)/(price minus minimum spend)."

    Post is linked below.

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/07/24/midweek-friendlies-round-up-monday-and-tuesday/?hc_page=1#hc_comment_5095025

Myself and a big shout to GW have managed to publish the workings for FPL. The interactive table is split into two. The first showing last years VORP findings and the second showing players that if they repeat last seasons points total, the VORP scoring for the coming season.

Like normal, there are filters for players, clubs, players position for both graphs and players starting value for VORP 13-14 prices so you can drill down into the detail.

    Interactive table link;

    http://public.tableausoftware.com/views/GWHRBVORPValueoverreplacementPlayer/GWHRBVORPValueoverreplacementPlayerWorkings?:embed=y&:display_count=no

There's some interesting results such as if Michu repeats his last season efforts, there is still value this season for him or at Arsenal, Mertesacker stands head and shoulders 😉 above anyone else. Considering we are all predicting an increase in bonus for him, this really does nail home the value in the big German. The best value is actually Garrido. how many were surprised that he was valued at 4.5 mil this season?

Any thoughts on the concept nicked from baseball? I personally find it very useful

    Cheers 🙂

I'll just add - there's no weighting given to those who suffered partial gametime last season so anyone who didn't feature heavily last season but is likely to be more heavily featured this season would see a bump in their VORP. Sturridge for example is probably underrepresented in this table.

I was trying to get my head around something similar, effectively saying that a 4.0 def or 4.5 mid or forward are free (as it's the minimum you must spend) In this way Sturridge is 4.5 mill and RVP is 9.5, is there really that much difference considering you only have 36 million in total to spend over the minimum. Also you can at the start only play 83.5 million at most on the pitch. Just some thoughts no real conclusion.

Deep.... I sort of think about the cheap players this way, i.e. "you've got to spend 4m, so you might as well spend the extra 0.5 for someone who you wouldn't mind playing occasionally" but have never really thought about the top end in the same way.

If you hover over any of the marks you get more detail. Also, it will make more sense if you filter down a little using the tools on the right - more of the names will appear the fewer data points are displayed.

So basically, the VORP score is how many more points they're likely to score over the minimum you can spend in that position?

So you could use it to help work out whether it's worthwhile getting, say, a 5m attacking midfielder for your 5th midfield spot, over a 4.5m defensive one?

      Good work chaps, excellent effort!

Pretty much, although the base price for a position was set independently of the base score.

The base price is the minimum you need to spend to get a nailed on option.

The base points is the lowest score achieved by a nailed on option in that position last season (regardless of price).

OK.... I'm struggling a bit! So basically the furthest to the left and to the top is where you want to be, i.e. lowest price above the baseline, highest points above the baseline.

And if the base points is the LOWEST score by a nailed on option, then that's the most optimistic assessment of value, right? i.e. the player could be, in practice, much worse "value over replacement"

for 12-13 results, yep. Michu is there 😉

On the 13-14 results, basically you want to be above the line and as high as possible

Just to add, on the VORP 12-13 over points above base, you want to be as far to the right and as high as possible

Another interesting fact is once you hit 6 mil or above for defenders you are getting positive VORP values (discounting the injured Vidic, Terry and Jones)

Same is true of the premium (8.5+) mids and strikers if you discount those with limited gametime (Sturridge/Coutinho)

Yeah that's what I was thinking! Must try remember that when I'm tempted to start bringing Ridgewell or Shawcross in halfway through the season.... go big or go cheap, that's my new credos.

(it was Jonas Olsson last year, which didn't work out well)

For cheap defences, filter the 13-14 VORP to 4 and 4.5 pricing. The results are interesting and back up the community thoughts on the players to pick in the value bracket this year

Well done lads looks like nice work (from the comments).

I can't see the table but is there any way we can work out value on a points per minute basis taking our baseline as the points scored per minute by lowest priced nailed on option?

This would allow us to filter and include the players who didn't play a lot of minutes for whatever reason but who we expect more minutes for this year.

If you could give extrapolated points for full minutes even this might work as long as people realise that it's based on said players achieving the extra minutes

Hmm, it's possible, I was toying with that idea initially but in the end I quite like the fact that it reflects the lack of minutes some players achieve. It's kind of 'six of one, half a dozen of the other' as in either case there's a requirement for the user to judge and adjust their opinions based on likely gametime. For every Sturridge or Coutinho who we expect more from this year there's a Dzeko or Milner who will continue to be bit part players. I may leave this to Tommy's discretion - if he's game then I'll put any necessary extra legwork 🙂

I've got Garrido in my team. Have had him from the start actually ever since I did my ultimate dead team analysis he stood out as the best Norwich defender behind Bassong who is 5m. At 4.5 Garrido is a steal and will be a regular starter. Ollson will mainly be used for cover at both LB and LW.

Superb work. I like it a lot, and I will have to dig much deeper once I'm not on a smartphone.
I certainly like VORP much more than the ppm metrics.
As for nicking it from baseball, there is no shame in that. Baseball may be boring as hell, but it lends itself very naturally to statistical analysis. For that reason baseball is lightyears ahead of other sports when it comes to concepts like VORP.

Fantastic work fells. This looks like an extremely valuable tool. As far as I'm aware, you're breaking new ground!

I agree with Dino that the next step would be to factor in game-time, maybe using points per minute rather than total points. We can always use our own judgement as to whether those players will be nailed-on and truly offer the value suggested and it would allow us to make a useful judgement on players like Walcott and Sturridge, who have much less game-time but will be in most teams come the start of the season as they obviously offer good value.

Annoys me that 'project' has become the new buzz word used by the sharks whenever a football club wants to spend an obscene amount of money.

As much as I like QPR, still hope that all these 'projects' end in a similar fashion as QPR's.
