Double Gameweek 1 Confirmed for Chelsea and Villa

The Premier League have this afternoon confirmed both Chelsea and Aston Villa will now start the season with a double Gameweek 1. With the Blues set to face Bayern Munich in the Uefa Super Cup Final on Friday August 30, their home game against Villa, which was initially scheduled for Saturday August 30, has now been shifted to Wednesday August 21.

This news is set to bring the Blues assets firmly onto our Fantasy radars, bearing in mind Jose Mourinho’s side also entertain Hull City on the opening weekend of the new season. Huge investment is now expected to come Chelsea’s way, though Fantasy managers will be mulling over a couple of recent Mourinho comments as they assess just who to splash their budgets on.

The Blues boss admitted Spain’s match in Ecuador, which takes place on August 14, may be a factor in his line-up for the Tigers fixture – something to consider when assessing the likes of Juan Mata, Cesar Azpilicueta and Fernando Torres for our starting XI:

“The players who go for their national teams two days before the opening of the Premier League, it depends a lot on that. Some have to go to Ecuador and come back and arrive in London on Saturday without having slept after a 15-hour flight to train on Saturday morning. If a player plays for England on Wednesday against Scotland, plays for 45 minutes at Wembley and then an hour after the game he is at home in Cobham sleeping, he is in a better condition to play. The team will be decided game after game and week after week. I will have to think about two or three matches at the same time.”

Only yesterday, Mourinho also revealed he will be a little more cautious with Frank Lampard’s game time this term. As mentioned in this morning’s Friendlies Round Up, the veteran midfielder is unlikely to one of the “untouchables” this time around as his manager looks to rest him more often.

The comments perhaps strengthen Eden Hazard’s prospects as the Belgian looks to replicate his start to the previous season, which produced double figures in both his double Gameweek 1 appearances. While loading up on Chelsea looks a viable tactic, a trip to United in Gameweek 2, followed by a blank fixture the following week, also has to be factored into the equation.

For Villa, though, the appeal of a double is significantly lessened, bearing in mind they travel to Arsenal prior to the Stamford Bridge showdown – those eyeing up Christian Benteke, for example, may be a little cautious given the fixtures, though the uncertainty surrounding the Chelsea forwards certainly indicates the Belgian looks the most nailed-on of any double Gameweek frontline option.

We’ll have more on the two sides in upcoming Scouting the Doubles articles – for now, though, this is just a heads-up.

  4. How to get Bale/RVP and 3 Chelsea players.

For those of you who want Bale and RVP and a little flexibility and 3 Che, let me walk you through a draft. And you want to leave the option of not using your wildcard as well, then give this a thought.

    Boruc 4M
    Luiz Turner Clyne Collins Chester
    Bale Hazard Barfa Nolan 4.5M
    Giroud Rodriguez Lukaku

    5M

Now we have 3 che and covering quite a few favorable fixtures in the first few gws. Except City (which is a minefield since none of us know who the player to get is)

So doing this you have a few options to approach gw2

Downgrade Luiz -> Nasta/Mert/Kos. Upgrade Lukaku to RVP.
If RVP is a flop in GW1, wait for the upgrade to RVP and let that price fall. No need to take the hit. If RVP scores a brace vs. Swansea, get him in before the price gets too high.

Additionally, if Silva turns out to be a hit, or Aguero turns out to be a hit, a swap from Hazard/Lukaku is an easy option too.

So the 5M gives me enough flexibility to judge GW1 in the areas i'm not sure about.
If it all goes tits up, Wilcard.

Your opinion on this would be worthwhile. Have i lost my marbles or does this make sense?

3 Chelsea and Bale = RVP just shafts your team completely

Luiz and Hazzy for me with Bale + Aguero is the way I'll probably sail come week 1

I think it's an alot easier decision to put RVP into your team if he's doing well than to take him out if he's doing badly. Will be like a gamble every week where you're too scared to take him out in case he scores. Whereas if he's doing well you'll just think "Gotta have him" and then make it happen..

      Hmmmm interesting.

My thinking is build a team around the first 3 GW's and WC at the international break. When you factor in early season form, or lack of, and the evitable surprise packages, there's no point planning beyond this anyway.

Unless I'm mistaken, the international break is after GW3, i.e. after the blank. That means the Chelsea have 3 fixtures over the first 3 GWs. If you want to use your WC to get the best out of the DGW, then WCing before GW3 is the way to do it.

i think with all the favourable fixtures GW1 plus Chelsea and AV DGW there is a lot to be said for loading up on clean sheet possibilities, 3 che, 3 villa, and 1 from each of city, arse and bale. united under moyes, with swansea away first up, are all omit-able - apart from rvp - but he would fund the others, and could be replaced pronto if he hit the ground running.

i think rvp's damage is unlikely to be greater than the possibilities he would allow vs hull, newc, av x2, and crystal palace.

i would spend the 5m and risk taking a hit personally. GW1 last time was pretty hefty - it's not one to miss out.

if you don't want to take the WC - then water down AV and Chelsea, and perhaps leave reasonably easy option to get rvp back

This looks a very valid strategy Lateriser (upvote) if you want RVP but I just don't like what you have to sacrifice to get him in.

I think you and everyone else who has RVP will be wasting transfers trying to get him out (after bringing him after his brace gw1) and spread the cash around your team bringing in the same players everyone else who is selling RVP is scrambling to bring which is inflating their prices massively.

I guess you have to go with your gut though and you did alright with it last year.

Not to me. You have a decent defender(5) up in the air, not utilised, all for the sake of acquiring van Persie; who, when all is said and done, is probably the most likely scorer, game week 1.

      Toure, Azpilicueta, Merte

Hey mate. Last year I heard Peter Whittingham was benched a lot in the second part of the season in Championship due to poor form. But he's really exciting, considering he has an eye for goal, and takes free kicks and penalties as well. Do you think he'll start in the first match against West Ham? And do you think he'll be a good buy?

Mourinho has said that he will reduce Lamps playing time (could be one or both of the dwg games) and I'm not 100% that Lukaku is there first choice striker.

I would probably drop Lukaku. Even though he can be explosive, Lamps will take penalties and has some corner/free kick duties.

My team is currently set up as this:

    Foster (Boruc)
    Cole, Mertesacker, Garrido (Parr, Chester)
    Hazard, Bale, Walcott, Tonev (Pozuelo)
    Lukaku, Rooney, Aspas

A Rooney transfer would mean that I'm stuck with Bale. So if Bale does leave I'd end up adjusting the team and only going with 3 Chelsea.

Pozuelo isn't gonna play much, is he?

    SUP dudes!
Firstly, after having been away so long I'd REALLY like to thank Mike, aka DOOS on inviting me back to his league for the season. CAN'T WAIT!

So I've put a team together that I'd love some comments on, and yes, I've stalked a few times but hey this is prob my what 7th season? Anyway...

    Mignolet

    Coleman TurnerM TurnerB

    Bale Hazard Pozuelo Wally

    Sturridge RVP Rod

subs - 4mil keeper, Thomas Parr Faye

My idea is to switch Haz for Navas/Silva for gw2

Anyway, I'd really appreciate any comments, particularly those who know of me (Green Dreams... where u gone dude?) and all newbies

    AWESOME to be back X

      Premier League goals last season:

    Mannone
    Cole Zabaleta Mertesacker
    Bale Coutinho Hazard Silva
    Aspas Lukaku Anelka

    Boruc, thomas, turner(norwich), rosenior.

Wildcard once we see which 'big hitter' forward is banging them in. Three sub 8.5 mil strikers is slightly worrying, but the team is stacked, full of goals and assists from the back and mid, and I fancy 4-6 goals from those forwards in GW 1 alone!

WC in GW3 at the very earliest imo. 2 weeks to see starting players, catch some bandwagons and catch some price rises.

      no
never use it week 2, massive disadvantage when there are unexpected game cancellations/ injuries
plan a release strategy with fixtures in mind
be prepared to stray from it when the unexpected gem appears

I know i should be overloading my team with chelsea and villa players but at the moment i only feel comfortable going for Hazard and not opting in for any Villa players. Am i mad?

Yes, I did this last season - I went for only Terry, it was a good laugh but pretty much ended my season before it begun

i just can't put any more chelsea players into my team, there will be rotation up top, players like mata (spanish players) willl only play one game and in defense except from cole i don't know who is nailed on really.

I'd say you need at least one defender, just wait and see who looks certain to play both games or get Cech 😀

It looks a very tricky DGW with the blank and utd fixture. Plus there much more uncrtainty regarding lineups thaan last season
Im tempted to just go with Hazard and Lulaku and bring in the Villa Keeper , who at least should get plenty of save points

How come Lukaku is suddenly a certainty to play ?
Did I miss something or is he still 3rd choice ?

I plan to, just think it's a tad early yet for people to assume he's gonna play, I'd guess if the Spaniards all get rested game 1 they'll all play game 2.

Mourinho is hinting that Torres and Mata will be rested because of a Spain friendly before Hull. People are assuming that Lukaku will start ahead of BA because of his preseason form.

Mourinho has said something about the Spanish players not starting against Hull due to an international friendly and he doesn't seem to like Ba. Lukaku will start against Hull and either start or get 20-30 minutes against Villa. With that opposition its plenty of time to unleash carnage.

    How about:

    Cech
Nastasic Zabaleta Baker (2 city for their easy opening fix)
Zaha (yes a risk whatever) Walcott Hazard Bale
    Benteke Lukaku Anelka

5 dgwers, Bale and Walcott potential point machines, plus some City coverage. Zaha = punt.

True, and i got seriously stitched up by DGW's last season. Is Lukaku going to start twice? Unlikely, but then he is also affective coming off the bench. Tricky!
