Sky Sports – Player List Analysis – Forwards

We roll out our fourth article on this year’s Sky Sports game this evening. Having cast an eye over the rule changes and subsequently assessed the Player Price List for Goalkeepers and Defenders and Midfielders, we now take a look on what’s on offer for our forward lines:

Budget Bracket

Hull’s Sone Aluko comes in as the cheapest forward in the Sky Sports game at 5.6. The Nigerian notched eight goals and four assists from 23 appearances before being sidelined with an Achilles injury and had initially looked a decent shout but the Tigers’ recent loan acquisition of Danny Graham (7.6) and pursuit of Yannick Sagbo suggests Aluko’s starting berth is perhaps no longer guaranteed.

Crystal Palace’s record signing Dwight Gayle has a greater security of starts. With Glenn Murray injured, Gayle should get the nod as Ian Holloway’s lone forward and comes in at 6.1, while Sunderland’s new boy Jozy Altidore has been very favourably priced at just 6.3 – the US international arrives on Wearside in serious form, having racked up 31 goals and seven assists in 39 league and cup matches last term.

Cardiff’s big-money signing Andreas Cornelius will set you back 6.6 – a contribution of 18 goals and five assists helped FC Copenhagen to the Danish title last season, with his target man abilities ideal for Malky Mackay’s lone forward system. Certainly, “The Danish Tank” looks better value than Bluebirds team-mate Craig Bellamy – priced at 7.3, he’s likely to be mainly fielded on the flank in Mackay’s 4-5-1, with an occasional switch up top when Cardiff change to a two man frontline. West Ham’s Ricardo Vaz Te could be worth an early-season punt if Andy Carroll fails to recover from a heel injury. Typically fielded on the flank, the 6.9 priced Portuguese forward is the likeliest Hammer to lead the line in Carroll’s absence and has a strong run of opening fixtures to potentially benefit from (CAR, new, STO, sot, EVE, hul).

Mid-Price Options

Norwich’s new forward Ricky Van Wolfswinkel has been handed a 7.5 price tag, after netting 14 times in each of the last two season for Sporting Lisbon. While Chris Hughton is closing in on a move for Gary Hooper, the Dutchman still looks to be a nailed-on starter – a change in set-up from 4-4-1-1 to 4-4-2 looks likely now as the Canaries look to improve upon last term’s dismal 41-goal haul. Emmanuel Adebayor’s mere five goals in 2012/13 are reflected in his cost of 7.6 – if Spurs fail to find a new striker, he could, potentially, he worth a shout if he can rediscover the form which made him such a prolific Fantasy asset a couple of years ago. With Andre Villas-Boas admitting his interest in Roberto Soldado earlier this week, the Togo international may be warming the bench more often than not this time out.

Villa wide men Andreas Weimann and Gabby Agbonlahor are both priced at 7.7, though the latter was a little more prolific last time out by nine goals to seven and also provided more assists than the young Austrian. Certainly, if Paul Lambert’s side can replicate the form of the final few matches of 2012/13 they could be worth consideration but with the duo set to play right and left of Christian Benteke respectively, it’s hard to justify any real investment. The midlanders’ forgotten man Darren Bent – priced at 7.5 – looks an intriguing option if he can manoeuvre a switch to Newcastle. Bent revealed earlier this week he expects to leave Villa “pretty soon” and with the Magpies facing (WHM, FUL, avl, HUL) from Gameweeks 2-5, investment in Alan Pardew’s side could pay off.

Peter Crouch could benefit from Mark Hughes’ plans to bring a more attacking style of football to Stoke. At 7.8, the big centre-forward may thrive on service from proper wingers, as opposed to the previous tactic employed by Tony Pulis, which mainly involved sticking central midfielders on the flank. While Crouch was hardly prolific in 2012/13, he was still vital to the Potters – with seven goals and four assists, he played a part in 11 of their 34 league goals. Bryan Ruiz and Jay Rodriguez, at 7.8 and 7.9 respectively, afford us cheap options into the Fulham and Southampton attacks but with more prolific options on offer at both clubs, both may find it difficult to pick up significant interest.

Priced at 8.0, Chelsea’s summer signing Andre Schurrle may be somewhat cheaper than both Juan Mata and Eden Hazard but his classification as a forward is likely to dent his appeal, bearing in mind he’s more than likely to be fielded out wide in the 4-2-3-1 – while Jose Mourinho also hinted the German international could be fielded through the centre recently, his reverse out of position listing will knock the new boy off many Watchlists.

Swansea’s big-money signing Wilfried Bony will be looking to steal Michu’s thunder this season. The Ivory Coast forward arrives at the Liberty on the back of 31 goals and eight assists in 30 league matches for Vitesse Arnhem and his installation as the Swans lone forward will ensure the Spaniard is fielded in the role in “the hole” behind. Stevan Jovetic has been handed the lowest price of any City forward. The summer signing from Fiorentina comes in at just 8.1 but his versatility could go against him – the Montenegro international is perhaps more likely to be fielded in a more withdrawn central role or even on the left in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-2-2-2 formation. With so much uncertainty surrounding the likely starters up top under Manuel Pellegrini, his acquisition undoubtedly comes at a risk.

Coming in at 8.1, Andy Carroll will surely be earmarked as a possible option. If he can recover from his current heel problem, the Hammers main man has a superb opening run of fixtures which present a strong chance to open this season in the same manner he finished 2012/13. Another former Liverpool striker, Nicolas Anelka, is one to consider. The new West Brom forward comes in at 8.2 and while his versatility may see him utilised on the flank by Steve Clarke, Anelka has featured through the middle so far in pre-season and notched twice in the Baggies previous game. Certainly, the Frenchman looks a better option than new team-mate Shane Long (8.0).

Steven Fletcher’s eye for goal was crucial for Sunderland last time out but at 8.0, compared to Altidore’s 6.3, he’s far less budget-friendly that his new Black Cats’ team-mate, though the Scot has a strong record in the Premier League and has produced double figures in each of his last three seasons. Over at Everton, Arouna Kone is marginally dearer than Nikica Jelavic by 8.4 to 8.0 but is expected to lead the line in a front three, having racked up 11 goals and five assists under Roberto Martinez at Wigan. The Croatian’s game time looks questionable, by comparison, though ultimately Kone’s appeal is considerably lessened by Kevin Mirallas, with the Belgian down as a 6.5 midfielder. Newcastle’s Papiss Cisse remains relatively expensive despite a disappointing second season in the top-flight. Coming in at 8.4, the Senegal striker notched just eight times in 2012/13 and although he may be the Magpies only current first-team forward, Alan Pardew looks intent on adding to his options – Cisse tends to operate best as a lone frontman and may struggle to justify such a cost if Pardew moves to a 4-4-2.

Premium Prospects

If Arsenal’s interest in Luis Suarez fails to come to fruition, Olivier Giroud’s 8.5 price tag becomes a little more appetising, with the Frenchman likely to go into next season as the Gunners’ number one striker. Given that Arsene Wenger is clearly determined to bolster his frontline, Giroud looks on shaky ground despite notching six times in three pre-season matches.

Both Romelu Lukaku and Dimitar Berbatov have been priced at 8.6 on the back of their respective 17 and 15 goal hauls last time out – while the Belgian’s consistency of game time remains questionable now he’s back at Chelsea, he’s still the cheapest Blues forward on option, with Demba Ba and Fernando Torres priced at 9.0 and 9.3 respectively. Berbatov offers far more security – he remains nailed-on as Fulham’s number one forward and, with spot-kicks in the bag, still has plenty potential to shine as Martin Jol’s main goal threat – the same applies to Southampton’s Rickie Lambert (8.7), who also has free-kicks in his locker and matched Berbatov’s goal haul in 2012/13.

Michu’s reclassification as a forward really puts the cat amongst the pigeons and denies Fantasy managers a reliable source of goals from midfield. The Spaniard will set you back 8.8 but if he can replicate last season’s 18 strikes, remains a viable proposition as a frontman, though some may be swayed by Bony’s more budget-friendly route into the Swansea attack. Christian Benteke has been elevated out of the mid-price range and now costs 9.0 due to his 19 goals in 2012/13. The Villa man also provided four assists, playing a part in 23 of his side’s 47 goals and with spot-kicks in his locker, there’s no reason why he can’t replicate last season’s displays and justify that price tag, now his future at Villa Park is settled.

The Luis Suarez situation at Liverpool leaves Fantasy managers with a dilemma. New boy Iago Aspas comes in at 8.5 and Daniel Sturridge has been priced at 9.2 – both are cheaper than the Uruguayan, who will take up 9.9 of your budget. Suarez is, of course, suspended for Liverpool’s first six matches of the season but if he gets the move he’s been itching for, Sturridge looks the likeliest to lead the line, with Aspas handed a role on the right. Bearing in mind Philippe Coutinho is a 7.8 midfielder, though, many may opt for the Brazilian instead.

Sergio Aguero remains in the top three most expensive forwards in spite of a poor season last time out. With Manuel Pellegrini now installed as the City boss, a more attack-minded style of play is anticipated; the Argentine’s 9.8 price tag is far more expensive that Edin Dzeko (8.5) and Alvaro Negredo (8.6) but the general consensus of opinion is that Aguero will remain Pellegrini’s main striker, with his versatility allowing him to either lead the line or drop in behind. Dzeko now seems to have been knocked down the pecking order as a result of the new arrivals and while Negredo rolls up to the Etihad on the back of 25 goals and four assists for Sevilla last season, his lack of versatility may prove detrimental to his overall minutes across the season as Pellegrini alters his system and personnel in accordance with opponent.

Finally, around the corner in the red half of Manchester, Sky Sports clearly have high hopes for the currently-hamstrung Wayne Rooney. He’s still the fourth most expensive player in the game at 9.6, despite falling far short of his usual standards in 2012/13 – with Chelsea in pursuit, it’s debatable whether Rooney will even be at Old Trafford come September but when we have the relentless, goal-scoring machine that is Robin Van Persie (10.0) as an alternative, there’s little decision, if any, needing to be made. While a move to Stamford Bridge would bring boost Rooney’s prospects, the security of both starts and attacking returns makes Van Persie seem a relative bargain, given how close the pair are in price.

  3. 2nd Season Syndrome

What are people's thoughts about second season syndrome(SSS) for players? Is it a myth.. or are there strong cases of players being affected by it.

Lots of players fail to live up to their debut seasons and get overlooked or become overrated. One example could be Papiss Cisse. He was on fire first season, scoring goals pretty much every game he played from January. Then last season he flopped. This could be SSS or other factors such as the manager not using him the right way, not getting the same service he got the season before e.t.c.

Thoughts on the players that could suffer from SSS this year..

The obvious one is Michu. Most impressive debut campaign(goal scoring wise) by a foreigner, arguably since Torres at Liverpool. The main thing with Michu was his movement. So many times he arrived unnoticed in the box, always unmarked. Maybe this is a skill and he'll continue to outwit defenders next season. Or maybe defenders will pay closer attention like they did with Jelavic at Everton, who loved a first touch goal. A stat i saw: Michu scored 13 goals in the first half of last season, compared to 5 in the 2nd half. Have defenders already started to work him out? Was his 1st half of the season form not a true representation of his ability? Another factor is Bony who will probably take some of the goalscoring load off Michu. I wouldn't be surprised if he got 15-20 goals in all comps and Michu was unable to reach double figures.

Another is Rickie Lambert. Can't help think of Grant Holt's second season at Norwich. Both players in their 30's. Both came up from the Championship, and both having impressive debut campaigns. Like with Michu, Lambert has clever movement/makes good runs, but will defences suss him out next season? He was on a fair share of free kicks and penalties too. These accounted for 5 of his 15 goals. Out of the other 10, 5 were headers, 3 of the goals occurred with him being unmarked and the other two were just good finishes. See all his goals here: ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=275nyW6U1S4 ). You would think he'll do well again this season just based on him being on pens/free kicks, but will it be enough. Will he still contribute with the assists? Again, there could be a new signing which upsets the applecart, and i can see this being a strong likelihood here, with Pochettino soon looking for a younger, newer model with emphasis on pressing. This could also be someone like JRod being given a role upfront with Lambert on the bench more often. Rodriguez was used upfront in 11 appearances last season(starting and from the bench) ( http://www.whoscored.com/Players/33891 )

The next player is Kone at Everton. He had 11 goals and 5 assists in the prem last season, and was pretty underrated from an fpl perspective. Kone's main attributes are his pace on the counter, dribbling and heading ability. He also loves to run the channels. He appeared 17 times through the middle scoring 7 goals, and 10 of his starts were on the right from where he only scored 1 goal. At Everton, it's uncertain what formation Martinez decides to go with but whatever he chooses would be key to how successful Kone is. At Wigan, he was fed lots of through balls from the likes of Gomez, McMannaman and Maloney. Will he have to adapt his game at Everton where the focus is more on crossing from wide and playing with width? Kone is a proper livewire in the box, so the goals from corners and from balls dropping to his feet in a goal mouth scramble should still happen. Everton have Mirallas/Pienaar and even Deoulefou now on the right wing, so Kone should get the majority of his starts in a central role. His main competition will probably come from Anichebe. But if Martinez uses the system he did at Wigan, then you'd have to favour the Ivorian over the battering ram Victor.

Next is Benteke. He was an animal in the 2nd half of last season, compared to Michu who was pretty tame. Benteke got off to a slow start scoring 5 goals, with an impressive 14 at the turn of the year. The turnaround probably came in the Liverpool game where he was absolutely unplayable, bagging a brace. Continued to score from then on. One caveat with Benteke was that he rarely did anything against the top 5 teams, with only 1 goal and 1 assist in 10 appearances against the top 5. It would be hard for Benteke to not improve on this next season. Unlike with Michu, Kone or Lambert, there are no doubts that Benteke will still be the main man for Villa, central to everything that goes through them. He'll still be on penalties. This clarity can't be accounted for the above players. Benteke's strengths are his aerial duels, long shots, heading attempts, and finishing. He's got the attributes that make it hard for defenders to completely negate his threat. An obvious weakness is his offside awareness. He was caught offside FIFTY! 50! times in the league last season. If he works on that, along with Villa being a better team in general next season with their new additions, then i can see him having another very strong season so can't see SSS affecting him at all.

Judging by the above, is it only really relevant to strikers? Can you see, or do you have examples of defenders/midfielders suffering from second season syndrome?

Do you believe in SSS? Is it caused be players believing their own hype, getting big for their boots, or defenders sussing them out. Or even things like fatigue from International tournaments, and playing every game in every domestic competition.

Who do you think will suffer from this and have an underwhelming season this time round, after impressiing last year?

There was a good article on here which mntioned that Michu's preferred position is to run on to the ball from deep. in the second half of last season he was played a lot upfront, and there are question marks over whether that's his game or not. This *may* have influenced why h scored less. IF (big if) that is true, then Bony should be a huge plus, pushing Michu back into the hole and allowing him to play his game. We'll see whenthe season starts if there is any truth to the theory.

I don't know what's going on with Lambert - sounds like he's want away to Reading, so we may not get a chance to see SSS here. Management change may have unsettled things during the season? No idea.

I'm not sure if SSS just affects strikers even though Andy Johnson springs to mind, it does seem to be strikers a lot. how about Charlie Adam? But I wonder is that more related to a transfer rather than a second season... Very interesting post.

      Good stuff demi.

McLean was one who had a terrible second season due mainly to defenders finding him out.

Next year possible SSS players (apart from those you listed) could be:

Hazard (marked downturn in form after the first 5gw's last year where he got 8 assists and 2 goals),

Weiman (young player probably not given a lot of attention in the pre match tactics of opposing managers but last seasons efforts should mean he will be more of a marked man),

Can't think of anymore off the top of my head but if I do I'll add them.

My opinions on the mentioned players:

Michu - Great last season, but his £9.0m price tag this season allied with Swansea's opening 6 fixtures make him a no-go player for the opening GWs. Maybe later in the season after a few price drops he could make a nice differential.

Lambert - Bargain. I was amazed when the prices came out and he was only £7.5m. He was the first name on my team sheet (until I took him out today after the DGW news). Sure, he may not have quite as good a season as last year (although I can't see him dropping off too much), but at that price he still represents great value. He's my go-to forward after the DGW is over with, and possible season keeper thereafter.

Kone - I had him in an initial team draft but he just didn't look right for some reason. Maybe it was because I also had Mirallas at that time and the double Everton attack looked like too much, but I went with my gut and rejigged my team specifically to remove him.

Benteke - He is a beast. I didn't own him at any stage of last season and many is the GW that I looked on enviously at others' teams as he banged them in after the turn of the year. I vowed to start this season with him in my team, and despite a tough looking opening schedule, was toying with the idea of doing so anyway until today's DGW news made my mind up to include him. One worrying piece of info I read in a recent post is that he only scored once in 10 games against the top teams, but the DGW is enough to override that for a start. A more long-term decision can be made later.

Also, I don't expect Fellaini to repeat last year's points tally by a long shot.

that's one of the best posts I've seen on here in 5 years

a couple of comments on Michu (a) he was switched up front quite a lot from mid-season onwards and perhaps this contributed to his loss of form (b) he was in my team until the end so I was watching him carefully and he often seemed to miss sitters, usually blasting them over the bar so I wondered whether he was jaded not least since he'd had a good season in Spain the year before

but I certainly do believe in SSS...in fact I think it's common for players to have a great 4-5 months and then struggle...I think some players get worked out by the opposition and others try hard at first and then coast

having said that there's something else I believe even more strongly and that's FFS (Fancy Foreigner Syndrome)...Michu and Hazard were FF's who did well last season but most season the FF's who are fancied on here tend to flop

      Hi all,

I like to use the 'trend' (change in ownership) to see how FPL players response to the current news. And I always find some interesting result:

Between last two days ownership For The DGWers:
      - Quite heavy investment in CHE Def and Lukaku
      - Nearly no change for Villa

      CHE
      GKP: 0.1%
      DEF: 1.0% (Quite heavy investment)
      MID: 0.8%
FWD: 1.4% (Mostly caused by Lukaku)

      AVL
      GKP: -0.2%
      DEF: 0.1%
      MID: no change
      FWD: 0.2%

For Other teams, the useful trend is:
      - LIV GKP increase the most: 1.6% (Migs effect!!)
      - The lost in Position for CHE FWD are from (LIV, EVE, SWA, SOU)
      - The lost in Position for CHE DEF are from (SOU, TOT - Vertong)

What do you think of this finding? Is it useful or not? This is my first time to post this trend finding which I used to make it every GW last year to help my transfer decision. Feel Free to leave some comments =]

Folks, anyone seen Cabral for Sunderland? Apparently he had a good pre season game in the Asia tournament against spurs (Sunderland won 3-1), and the vids on you tube look impressive. Looks like he's a defensive mid, but he looks like the real deal, and for 4.5 he'd be a good bench warmer (for those of us who can't face buying Thomas, and in my experience, the inevitable disappointment)...

Anyone else only going with 1 Chelsea/Villa player from the start. For Me Hazard is a season keeper and will be my only chelsea player, if they didn't have united away after i may have gone for more.

However if Lukaku is first choice he will be in my tea, as 8 mil for the chelsea striker is to hard to ignore.

Another intersting thing for me is Dzeko to spurs, if he goes there he will be FPL gold!.

    For DGW

    Boruc -> Cech
    or
    Coleman -> Cole / Ivan?

If I get Cech, the rest of my team are up against easy opp.
    Nasty vs NEW
Toure vs STO (or Kaboul vs cry ?)
    Collns vs CAR

But if I get Cole/Ivan, I get the possible attacking points, but my Boruc will up against not-so-good fixture in wba.

wba don't strike me as scoring tons of goals out of the blocks this season, and often mid-table keepers get the most points 'cause of saves. i always find keepers to be a bit of a lottery compared to the other positions which is why i don't spend a whole lot of money on them.

let me put it this way, i had ivanovic for the DGW1 last season and he scored like 20something points. 😉

        Good point re save points.

Yes, that's the thing I was worried about getting Cech.

Okay so Boruc stays and I'll get a Chelsea defender.

Who's nailed on for Chelsea GW 1? Ivanovic / Luiz / Cole

CH - does the threat of Rotation dampen ones view on Aguero's value? Would he be assured game time more so than any of the other 3 forward options at MCI who cost less and have the potential to score just as well.

spain players likely to be rested for the first game which rules torres out. a lot of people suspect mourinho won't be able to resist this young man in the drogba mould. that said, i'd be VERY surprised if they don't have another striker in before GW1, so this is all a bit premature really.

      No but double gameweek.

      Might start one.

Torres playing in Spain friendly right before start of season. Mourinho already hinted he'll bench the Spanish players.

Lukaku good pre season form. Better than ba.

If Chelsea don't sign Rooney, then worth a punt.

Can also do damage off the bench with his form and potentially an already battered/tired hull or villa team when he does come off the bench maybe.

Can then swap out for bony, rvw, kone etc

    good GOD

so with the DGW announcement i finally had to get rid of RVP. but but but, i'm keeping 1.5 in the bank, planning hazard ---> koren and lukaku ---> RVP for gw3. my reasoning is that the chelsea players will *probably* rise in price if anything, given their DGWs, but i'm terrified that RVP will rise even more.... gambling anyway though. o.O

the DGW benefitted me HUGELY last year and got me my only week in the top 50 on fpl to date, but i think this year is a lot trickier. hardly anybody is nailed on for both by my reckoning (cech, cole and probly hazard), and i'm not touching villa at all for obvious reasons.

of course, if rooney signs i'll be due another rethink.... exciting stuff though!

          for the record:
          boruc | 4.0
          terry | collins | turner | parr | chester
          your mids
          aguero | lukaku | jrod

1.5 in the bank. getting rvp in before week 3 by downgrading hazard to koren or maybe a 4.5 if really necessary.

You may think I'm biased (I'm a pessimist/ biased, but against Villa!), but Villa will have a good season this year. Their players are very well priced considering our form over the final 10 games. Benteke top scored in the league for 2013.

Remember, we started with a completely new team last year. Once they gelled and got going, we were excellent.

One stat to back this up is that we were 6th in the half time league. This is evidence that we lacked experience in finishing games off. We have that now. Very confident we'll be better defensively this season (CB and LB were our weak points last year which we've now sorted out).

I can see why you'd avoid defenders early doors, but Benteke will be improved this year. He's easily transferrable too.

Tonev and Bacuna have the potential to as they're both attacking midfielders for 5m. But only Westwood is both nailed on with the potential to get returns (takes freekicks too).

Can anyone explain why Lukaku is popping up in every RMT but there is no mention of Demba Ba in any of them? Have I missed a Mourinho quote or something?

my own reasoning is that lukaku is a) cheaper, b) playing better in pre-season, c) fits the drogba mould which might appeal to jose, d) performed better than ba last season

      still a gamble though.

Just seemed strange that about 95% of teams ive seen while flicking through the forum today are willing to make the same gamble. Personally I think he'll be coming off the bench in both games

Think I like the setup and trying to avoid transfer plans over the next five weeks, as we all know that best made plans...well you know the rest. So i've tried to cover few area's here and decided after looking at City rotation that perhaps they might be best covered in defence rather than attack for first five weeks. I've also looked at the first five fixtures and reasonably happy with budget options in midfield namely Jarvis and Morrison.

    GK Migs Lewis

DEF Zabaleta, Collins, Ivano, Ward, Chester

MID Bale, Hazard, Morrison, Jarvis, Quinn

    FWD - Lukaku, RVP, Cornelius

    Appreciate any advice on this?

Should also note that there is some change of .5 left as well to cover price rises or upgrades.

personally i can't bring myself to spend that much on defense this season, my strategy is to have 5 reasonably sure big hitters in the front 8 (as opposed to your 3) and a significantly weaker defense. now that i've had to upgrade a defender to a chelsea player though that's gone down to 4 big hitters and lukaku for now 😛

It's not something I considered until DGW was announced to be honest, Merte was the most expensive and will be again after Chelsea's dgw and City's first four game weeks.

The front cover I agree with you on that and i guess I've maybe took a hit on that to make sure transfers are kept to a minimum eg getting rid of Chelsea players and ultimately the price of having both RVP and Bale.

What big hitters you rolling with?

bale aguero (slightly risky but not very IMO) walcott and hazard GW1, with the intention of getting RVP in for lukaku by gw3 (by downgrading hazard to koren + having 1.5 in the bank. again this is risky 'cause if rvp's price shoots up higher than the DGW guys i'm doomed haha)

                full team:
                boruc | (4.0)
                terry | collins | turner | (parr) | (chester)
                bale | hazard | walcott | snodgrass | (thomas)
                aguero | lukaku | jrod

Think that's pretty strong for opening fixtures and I really tempted by Aguero high risk stakes but If it comes off, it could and with a dgw score you might be well placed.

Long term I'd worry about having to rotate Thomas and Koren though. Downgrading Terry might help with that though.

Good luck anyways hope the setup pays off for you.

Is it complete and utter madness to be considering ''doubling up'' on Crystal Palace and Hull defensive duos with the intention of rotating them throughout the season? ie Speroni/McGregor (both 4.5m) with Parr/Chester (both 4m)... as I've read in a previous post these two sides rotate so is it worth the risk or is two combinations from these two sides a step too far?

You'd certainly free up some cash to spend on big hitters in the main attacking areas!

doesn't really make sense to me, as i would only ever play 3 defenders and i'd rather have two decent mid-table guys (say, collins and clyne) for the same price that i don't need to rotate out too much. i agree that having four defenders 4.5 or under is a legit strategy though.

yes...they won't get clean sheets for starters...there are much better gk choices for £9.0m...it's also worth noting that Murner/Chester/Parr rotates excellently as a trio

Dgw causing problems. Have dumped RvP with a view to getting him back in, Kun in instead.

This frees up Hazard (to be replaced by Coutinho) and allows me to upgrade Chester to Ivanovic.

Plan would be to get back to my original team over three weeks, or two with a hit, so that the Chelsea players are gone by their blank and RvP, Coutinho and Chester are back in.

Don't like setting plans like this though as the best laid plans of mice and men...
