Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Budget Forwards

We roll out the eighth article in our assessment of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List this morning. Having previously published articles on Goalkeepers, Budget Defenders, Mid-Price Defenders and Premium Defenders, we then looked at Budget Midfielders, Mid-Price Midfielders and Premium Midfielders. Up next, then, we turn our attentions to the men up front, focussing on players no more than 6.0:

Up to 5.5 Mark

Cardiff new boy Andreas Cornelius is likely to earn plenty game time in his debut season for the Bluebirds. “The Danish Tank” racked up 18 goals in 32 appearances for FC Copenhagen in 2012/13 but with just one full season of professional football behind him, there are concerns he may take time to adapt. Malky Mackay’s penchant for a target man within a lone striker system should ensure the 5.5 priced Cornelius plenty starts, while the likes of Fraizer Campbell (also 5.5) is more likely to earn game time off the bench when the Welsh club need to alter their approach and switch to two up front later on in games. Craig Bellamy is similarly priced and classified as a midfielder – he also has a share of corner and free-kicks but a role on the flank somewhat limits his appeal; the Welshman’s propensity for picking up injuries is also an issue, with just 33 appearances last time out. Cornelius looks the best bet of this trio, then, though a tricky start to the season may deter many.

With top scorer Glenn Murray sidelined for months due to a cruciate ligament injury, Crystal Palace new boy Dwight Gayle looks set to lead the line in Ian Holloway’s 4-2-3-1 formation. Coming in at 5.0, the former Peterborough forward looks in the driving seat to start the season for Palace – as mentioned in the recent Scout Report, Holloway has high expectations for a player who has cost a club record £4.5m. Free agent Carlton Cole is also being linked with a move to Selhurst Park but given the outlay on Gayle, he’d surely be ahead of the former West Ham man in the pecking order.

Palace’s home/away rotation with Hull could bring Danny Graham into consideration as a partner for Gayle. The Tigers on loan forward may have struggled last time out but he did, nonetheless, score 12 times in 36 appearances a couple of seasons ago for Swansea – at 5.5, he may still offer decent value and seems to have leapt ahead of Sone Aluko (5.0) in the pecking order. Alternatively, the likes of Robert Koren, Ahmed Elmohamady and Robbie Brady are cheaper in the Hull midfield at 5.0 apiece and offer an alternative rotation partner for Gayle. Similarly, pairing Graham with Palace midfielder Jerome Thomas (4.5) would also set you back a combined 10.0 and offers a schedule of (NOR, SUN. CAR, SWA, WHM, AVL, FUL) between Gameweeks 2-8.

Everton’s Victor Anichebe comes in 5.5 but with Arouna Kone added to the ranks and Nikica Jelavic also to consider, the Nigerian is likely to struggle for regular game time under new boss Roberto Martinez. Granted, Anichebe is versatile enough to play on the right though with Kevin Mirallas expected to get the nod, his minutes look far from guaranteed this time out. Hugo Rodallega also comes in at 5.5 and has impressed in pre-season but the Colombian remains behind Dimitar Berbatov and Bryan Ruiz for the forward roles – given that Ruiz is just 0.5 more expensive and offers the assurance of starts, Rodallega – like Anichebe – is likely to depend on game time off the bench.

Indeed, there’s a real shortage of forward options in the sub 6.0 bracket. Newcastle’s Shola Ameobi and Norwich’s Luciano Becchio may be cheap at 5.0 apiece but look like no more than bench fodder for their respective clubs, despite the former scoring in each of the Magpies last two matches. The arrival of Mark Hughes may promote Kenwyne Jones or Cameron Jerome (both 5.0) in the pecking order but with Peter Crouch looking likely to get the nod, Hughes is expected to go shopping for a more natural goalscorer to partner Crouch in his attempt to bring a more attacking brand of football to the Britannia.

Nicolas Anelka, on the other hand, looks to have a better Fantasy potential than most budget forwards – his versatility could see the Frenchman fielded through the middle or on the right as Steve Clarke prepares for life without Romelu Lukaku at the Hawthorns. At 5.5, Anelka – who notched twice in the Baggies’ last friendly – is also cheaper than the likes of midfielder James Morrison (6.0) and has Southampton, Swansea and Sunderland at home in the first five. Bearing in mind West Brom rotate with Aston Villa all season, he could offer a home/away partnership with Aleksandar Tonev for those eying up Paul Lambert’s new signing – at 5.0 in midfield, Tonev paired with Anelka would set you back 10.5, for those confident the Bulgarian will nail down a starting berth under Paul Lambert. Markus Rosenberg is even cheaper at 5.0 for the Baggies and notched in the club’s first two pre-season friendlies but is expected to move further down the pecking order when Clarke adds to his squad over the next few weeks.

Ricardo Vaz Te will be hoping Andy Carroll remains on the sidelines with a heel problem as the season gets underway. The former is typically fielded wide right by Sam Allardyce but looks the current favourite to be handed the lone forward role if Carroll fails to recover – with home games against Cardiff and Stoke and a trip to Newcastle in the first three, Vaz Te, at 5.5, may prove a decent short-term punt until the big Geordie regains full fitness.

The 6.0 Mark

For a fraction more budget, though, Fantasy managers are afforded greater security by a number of regulars. Andreas Weimann looks key to Villa’s prospects in the season ahead and racked up seven goals, four assists and 13 bonus points in his breakthrough year at the midlands outfit. Fielded on the right of a front three, the young Austrian offers the most budget-friendly route into Paul Lambert’s forward line- with Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and City in the first six, many may steer well clear, though Weimann may appeal for those on the hunt for a cheap striker in light of Villa’s double Gameweek 1.

Bryan Ruiz has been handed a 6.0 price tag after producing four goals and 10 assists in 2012/13. The Costa Rican has already scored in each of Fulham’s three pre-season games but his withdrawn role in “the hole”, allied with Dimitar Berbatov’s kind pricing and spot-kick duties, may see him struggle to convince investors of jumping on board. Four eye-catching fixtures between Gameweek 4-8 (WBA, CAR, STO, cpl) look particularly prosperous for the Cottagers, with Ruiz’s creativity likely to benefit.

The arrival of Mauricio Pochettino transformed Jay Rodriguez’s Fantasy potential in the latter half of last season. Having struggled to produce for previous boss Nigel Adkins, the former Burnley man proved himself to be more or less a match for Rickie Lambert under Pochettino and with game time looking secure, he’s already up and running in pre-season, scoring three times in two appearances. Lambert’s spot-kicks and set-piece duties, allied with his more advanced role and 7.5 price tag, is likely to sway many but Rodriguez’s much-improved form could turn out to be better value if his displays under the Argentine continue to flourish.

Peter Crouch will be hoping Mark Hughes’ arrival at Stoke can bolster his attacking potential. With 130 and 128 points accrued over the past couple of season, Crouch’s returns haven’t been too unimpressive – a drop in price, allied with the installation of a managers determined to go on the offensive, may subsequently see Crouch offer decent value in the season ahead. With a better quality delivery from the flanks, the six foot seven Potters forward may yet prove an overlooked differential for our three man frontlines as Stoke look to improve upon last term’s dire 34-goal haul under Tony Pulis. The fact that Stoke failed to register a single shot on target in their first match under Hughes earlier this week, however, suggests they are still clearly adjusting to his new approach.

Since none is sure of any Chelsea defenders starting both games, I'm not risking anyone from there.

Leaving that how do u rate my team?

    Mignolet,Boruc
    Toure, Garrido, Parr, Chester, Mertesacker
    Bale, Hazard, Walcott, Snodgrass, Nolan
    and 22.5 for forwards.

Besides RMTs, some of the most common posts on here are should I pick player A or player B. Obviously the responses from other posters will be their personal preference, and this is totally fine. Or often I see people saying player A because he will get more points over the season.

I think this is a big pitfall.

With the exception of a few players like Bale, RvP, Hazard, a few others and defenders from one of the top 5/6 clubs who are expected to keep the most clean sheets, or will be top scorers over the season, I think you should generally only look at the next 6 games, give or take a few weeks.

For example, I’ve seen people ask should they go Michu or Nolan for example. And the majority of replies have been Michu. Now while I have no doubt that Michu will outscore Nolan comfortably over the course of the season, I think the player would be better off going with Nolan to start. Their fixture read as follows (Nolan first)

    CAR/MUN new/tot STO/wba sot/LIV EVE/cpl hul/ARS

First 6 ticker has West Ham top and Swansea bottom!

Maybe it’s not a great example in terms of players, but what I’m trying to say is you should concentrate mainly on only the upcoming schedule when picking your original team. Later in the season you can factor form in, but before the season there is no form, so I am of the opinion that you should definitely play the fixtures at the start.

I reckon Vertonghen will run him close over the season (if Bale stays) but has a slight knock at the minute. Both are great picks and I really think expensive defenders are way underrated on here. An extra 2 million upgrading to a showpiece def is money much better spent than a 5.0 mid to a 7.0 mid.

Apologies for this repost but it got some support at the time and I thought it was worth mentioning again since people still seem to be making what I believe to be incorrect assumptions about the new BPS (eg that Vertonghen will suddenly be pinching loads of Bale's BAPs):

Just wanted to offer a word of caution to those getting seduced by the impact of the new BPS system on holding midfielders. Whilst these players will indeed end up with much better average numbers this isn't necessarily a good thing. A solid BPS score week in week out won't necessarily secure you BAPs, it's that top 3 position you need each game.

Those who secure the BAPs are those who may well have a lower overall average, but will have a wider, more volatile distribution. Arteta (season ave 6.46 per 90mins) getting 6, 6, 7, 8, 5 will gain fewer BAPs than a Walcott with 4, 4, 10, 10, 3 (6.22/90).

I'd be interested to hear people's thoughts on the double game week. My initial thoughts were Hazard, Lampard and Cole, but when I looked into how to get Lampard and Cole out after week 1 things began to look problematic. It would take a good few weeks to get back to the team I would have had without the double.

3 Chelsea and Benteke for me.

Even if you have 3 Chelsea players, you can always just bench them on week 3 as long as your whole squad is decent.

Going with just Hazard myself. The other players worth having mightn't play both games, and there's plenty other players from other teams who will play and should score well.

Thanks for your thoughts. I think I might compromise and have 2 Chelsea. I'm concerned that configuring my team around the double will mean that I can't respond to bandwagons without hits, and have an overly weakened team for gw2,3 and 4. Hazard captain for me.

Bandwagons are worth this though aren't they? Particularly if it's a DGW player who should have already paid for that hit.

Not sure to understand the love for Luiz, Iva or Cole (and even less so for JT, Azpi).

Granted they have a DGW with two easy games, but their next three games are plain awful. I like to use pts expectations to buy a player or not.

Lets do a quick example for Luiz vs Komps:

GW1. Luiz (11pts ie one CS and 3pts for attacking) vs Komps (4pts ie a 50/50 for a CS vs NEW)
GW2. Luiz (1pt vs manu) vs Komps (4pts ie 50/50 for a CS at Cardiff)
GW3. Luiz (1pt ie you play your cheap shite defender as coverage) vs Komps (5pts ie very good chance of CS vs Hull)
GW4. Luiz (2pt vs eve) vs Komps (4pts ie 50/50 for a CS at Stoke)
After GW4. The games are fairly even for both Che and City.

Conclusion. Luiz 15pts, Komps 17pts. And this assumes Luiz plays all the games and gets attacking returns in GW1 (whilst Komps get no attacking return).

If you add up the impossibility to commit for a transfer to get rid of Luiz (or at a cost of -4) and the fact that there are even better alternatives than Komps, it becomes clear that buying a CHE defender will barely give you a GW1 boost that is illusionary and probably detrimental to your team balance after that.

    Comments are welcome

Luiz week 1 switch to Komp for a hit is 24-4 so 20 points by your calculation. Better than either.

This is the only valid scenario, but under very conservative assumptions. If Luiz misses a game or does not get this attacking return, this is a loss for you (for a gain of 3 and not 20 as you implied)

PS. Any comparison to last year is irrelevant as Iva/Cole were 100% nailed on, had good fixtures after the DGW and were much cheaper than the likes of Komps/Evra and co

You seem to have it all figured out when in fact it's all speculation and none of us have a clue how it's going to turn out. A player with CS and scoring potential playing twice is better than one playing only once.

You have 4 other defenders and a FT in GW1 and GW2 to bench or sell the Chelsea defender and manage to field a back 3 comfortably.

Ivanovic scored rakes of points for me last season and it started with a DGW. The points potential is there and it offers a good starting point for the season.

Dunno if you've seen my previous post on my H2H for this season with my brother....He can only pick players from London and Welsh clubs,,,and i can only pick from the rest. Great banter and no overlap of players...No chance of a good overall score though for either of us...

Looks like I'm the only one going for Ba, Lukaku & Hazard as my 3. Torres won't play Hull. Which means Ba & Lukaku play. One coming on as impact sub that will probably contribute to at least one goal. 1.5 in the bank to sell Ba to Man City forward GW2 & sell Lukaku GW3 OR vice versa depending on who is more likely to play United. Would think over the 2 fixtures & considering their opponents it covers all basis for Chelsea's goals. Also playing Hull at home is essentially a double GW in itself. Villa aren't exactly a park the bus team either. Would expect Torres to start but then get subbed after 60min. With either scenario of Chelsea have the game won by then or Torres flopping & BA or Lukaku coming on to run a muck. BA is also a fantastic differential with only 2% ownage! Also Strikers have much greater attacking returns compared to defenders & it doesn't make sense to take transfer hits for defenders. Nor does it make sense (for me anyway) spending 6.5 on a defender that will get a max score of roughly 150 for the season when you can get an easy 120pts from a 4.5 defender. Hence my uber rotating back 5. Have to also assume that only one of Chelsea's games is a clean sheet & gambling on another Cole/Ivanovic scoring spree is extremely unlikely. Gambling on offensive returns from defenders is madness. The absolute max offensive returns from Cole & Luiz last year was 3 goals, 4 assists COMBINED. Ivanovic with 5 goals is now a huge rotation risk.

    BA & LUKAKU FTW!

2 appearances + a goal/assist for ZERO hits is better than 6.5 def for 4pt hit who will probably return the same but Ba can potentially score much, much higher even if he comes off bench twice.

Ba and Lukaku is too risky, and not necessary. You'd be lucky to get much more than 90 minutes between them.
