Friendlies Round-Up – Monday

United end their tour of Asia with a comprehensive win as Jesse Lingard gets amongst the goals once again. Markus Rosenberg and Nicolas Anelka maintain their recent scoring form as West Brom pick up another victory, while Hull edge past Peterborough thanks to a long-range effort from Maynor Figueroa. Elsewhere, Steven Fletcher may miss the start of the season for Sunderland and Roberto Martinez talks up the prospects of Nikica Jelavic for the campaign ahead after the Croatian bagged a brace in a weekend win at Blackburn:

Kitchee 2 Man United 5
David Moyes rolled out a 4-3-3 formation for United’s final match in Asia yesterday afternoon. With Jonny Evans missing out due to an ankle injury, the likes of Chris Smalling, Michael Keane and Fabio were handed a starting berth in an experimental line-up at the back, while further up the field, Wilfried Zaha and Ashley Young took the flank roles on either side of Danny Welbeck. The latter opened the scoring with his third pre-season strike before Smalling and Fabio added a goal apiece before the break. Moyes made six changes over the course of the second period and saw two of his subs combine for the fourth after Alexander Buttner teed up Adnan Januzaj before Jesse Lingard grabbed the visitors’ final goal, taking his tally for the summer to four – more than any other United player.

Speaking to United TV after the match, Smalling revealed he was determined to nail down a regular role under the new manager after starting just 10 times in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final year in charge:

“Last season was a very frustrating one so it is nice to be involved with pre-season because I didn’t get that last time and I am feeling good. The more games, the better. It was nice to pop up with a goal too. But to be fair, I probably should have got a hat-trick. Hopefully, I will get more chances like that. I was waiting for it (the goal), I have been due one because I didn’t get too many last season. Hopefully, I will be able to get a few more this season and chip in a little more.”

Elsewhere, Moyes was given an injury boost after Nemanja Vidic, Nani and Antonio Valencia returned to action for a United XI against Crewe last night. The trio had failed to take part in the pre-season tour but are now stepping up their respective recoveries – Valencia played the full 90 minutes, while Vidic and Nani were afforded just over an hour apiece, with the latter notching both goals in a 2-0 win.

Peterborough 0 Hull 1
Steve Bruce’s side registered their first win in four attempts yesterday evening. The Tigers boss continued with a 3-5-2 and shifted Maynor Figueroa to the left of midfield, whilst drafting in his son, Alex, to join James Chester and Curtis Davies in the back-three – the former Wigan man vindicated his manager’s decision to move him to a more advanced berth by notching the only goal of the game with a spectacular 25-yeard strike. Danny Graham was partnered by Sone Aluko up top but failed to notch before making way in one of seven second-half changes by the visitors. From an offensive point of view, the Tigers are still struggling and have scored just twice in the last four games (with one coming from the spot), though Bruce’s side have registered three clean sheets across that quartet of fixtures.

West Brom 3 Atromitos 1
Steve Clarke made eight changes from the side that saw off Derby at the weekend. Yet again, the Baggies boss altered his starting formation and moved from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3, with Saido Berahino, Markus Rosenberg and Shane Long leading the line as Nicolas Anelka dropped to the bench. With his side a goal down at the break, the Baggies boss made just two alterations, sending on James Morrison and Anelka, and the latter needed just 10 minutes to bring the hosts level with his third goal in as many matches. Rosenberg continued his strong summer form by teeing up Berahino to fire the Baggies in front before scoring his side’s third, taking his tally to four over five pre-season friendlies, the highest scoring West Brom player of the summer so far.

While Clarke has been linked with moves for Scott Sinclair, Salomon Kalou and Matej Vydra as he looks to bolster his frontline, Rosenberg is certainly staking a claim for consideration and prior to the match, the Swede spoke of his determination to atone for a debut season which saw him fail to find the net once in the Premier League:

“I didn’t score too many times last season so I have to score a lot in this campaign. I had a tough time last year so it’s good to have a start like this and to start to score goals. I always knew I could score because I scored in every other country, but it’s still nice to bag a goal and to have a pre-season. I missed the pre-season last year and I think it will be good for me in the campaign to come. It is always the same, it doesn’t matter how much experience you get. In the back of your head you know you can score but you have to prove it to the fans and to the people here.”

In Other News
Reports yesterday suggest Steven Fletcher is losing the race to be ready in time for the start of the season. The Sunderland striker is still struggling from the ankle injury that forced him out towards the end of the previous campaign and may be sidelined until September – meaning he would miss a potentially prosperous opening run of three games against Fulham, Southampton and Palace. Fletcher’s absence would mean Paolo Di Canio is likely to retain a 4-4-1-1 formation for the kick-off, with Stephane Sessegnon tucked in behind Jozy Altidore, though the former Wolves man may struggle to pick up many investors upon his return, with the Black Cats’ schedule stiffening significantly from Gameweek 4 onwards.

Roberto Martinez has been singing the praises of Nikica Jelavic after the Croatian bagged a brace in Everton’s weekend win at Blackburn. Jelavic was named as a sub at Ewood Park as Martinez handed Arouna Kone the lone forward role in a 4-3-3 but he staked a claim for first-team inclusion after replacing the Ivorian at the break. Having notched just seven times in the season gone by, Jelavic appears to have slipped down the pecking order following Kone’s arrival but he may still have a significant role to play this term, judging by his manager’s comments:

“In modern football it’s a bit unfair to rely on a player to score you 20-25 goals if you don’t do the things well as a team, you’ll never get the striker in good positions. That’s what we’re starting to develop now; a team that can be strong enough off the ball and that can create enough chances for our strikers to take, but it’s not the moment to assess the players as yet. It’s the time to assess them in each individual exercise and see what sort of relationship we can put on the pitch. What we saw [on Saturday] was a Nikica Jelavic that has come back with a real intention of having a very strong season.”

Having reunited with Martinez following their time together at Wigan, Kone had initially appeared nailed-on for a starting berth for the Toffees. With 13% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the Ivorian is the seventh most popular striker in the game at the moment but Jelavic’s form is certainly affording his new manager further options for the central forward role, suggesting wide men Kevin Mirallas and Steven Pienaar may be a little more secure as FPL out of position prospects in Martinez’s front three.

Bale's rumoured move to Real Madrid once again dominates the sports pages today. If the Welsh midfielder did move out of the Premier League does this automatically propel RVP into your side, or will you look to take advantage of the extra cash in other ways?

A lot of players have already started taking him out of their teams, although once you look into the reports, you see that absolutely no quotes have been given by Bale himself, and most of the reports stem from the Marca, one of the least reliable papers who have a strong Madrid bias. So I'd say no point selling Bale till we see an actual offer or some form of quote from Bale saying he does want to leave.

Real will have to pay a world record fee, and despite the bs press reports, they haven't so unless they sell some players they simply can't afford GB.

bale won't talk so he keeps his loyalty bonus.

levy is pretty shrewd....i think the transfer is 50/50 at best....but perez tends to get what he wants and there's still a long way to run....transfer deadline is 31 Aug.

It certainly doesn't automatically put RVP in my side, my reasons for going without him early on will still be there; new manager, tricky fixtures, other strikers with potential to score well, etc. Of course if I have spare cash sloshing around in my bank I may well just cave and get him in, at the minute I'm planning without though.

      one word: yes

more words: before the bale transfer, i think one of rvp / bale was essential - both looked top heavy.

most sided with bale because he was 2m less and moyes was a bit of an unknown.... but if you free up the cash, rvp is a must for me - there aren't any other strikers who you can put money on scoring big points....and it removes the armaband problem to some extent (which bale did as well of course)

i think a lot will bring in rvp after the dgw.

We will have 2-3m extra probably, but I'm not sure it makes RVP good value all of a sudden.

It does mean we won't necassarily have an automatic captain choice though if we don't have Bale or RVP, which arguably adds extra value to the RVP.

there are a couple of potentially highly profitable budget midfield/striker rotation pairings, and with the point premiums (increased BP under new system, CS points) for midfielders, i'll be happy to alternate between a 3-4-3 and 3-5-2 by GW, meaning that having 4 big hitting midfielders and 2 big hitting strikers is key.

      no RVP.

I would be utterly stumped at the moment. I am not sure I see RVP being auto captain material this year. Expecting a decline in performance.

That leads me to need Walcott from the start and be ready to leap onto whichever Man City player starts firing to give me another big hitting captain.

Papadopoulos is still on the cards for Liverpool so monitor that situation for Toure.

Is your plan to rotate Snod and Lambert? Just beware that 4 of Snod's 6 goals were away from home last year. And 8 of Lambert's 15.

Personally I'd downgrade Snod or Mirallas to a £4.5m like Thomas and use the £4m to upgrade Lambert or Berbs to a big hitter.

If Figueroa cements a spot on the left of the midfield at Hull, would he be worth consideration at 4.5m? Would he really be an OOP prospect with a good chance of attacking returns or just an attacking wing-back with little chance of defensive returns and therefore questionable value at 4.5m?

I'm not sure where he would fit in though. I still think I'd rather have Collins, M Turner and Clyne, unless he really has the left mid spot nailed-on. Even then, are Hull really going to get that many goals?

Hull kept ten clean sheets at home in the Championship, and only conceded two or more goals in six games (courtesy to FFS article). Granted, the quality in the BPL is far higher. But Bruce may look to build at the back and they may get good returns.

Then there is the other issue of will Figueroa bring returns even if deployed at an advanced role?

For me though, I'd much rather spend the 4.5 elsewhere. There are several value options at other clubs - Amorebieta, Yanga-Mbiwa, Collins, Cuellar/Diakite, Turner etc

one of a few players in the promoted sides that could be really handy cheap nailed-ons as the season progresses....no much talked about as it's early doors, but worth keeping an eye on....

I said it on the last page in reply to someone BUT its worth repeating:

If you are going to spend 9.0 on GKs (a decent enough tactic if you ask me) then you have to get Speroni.

Its not ideal but he rotates well with both Boruc & Marshall.

In a perfect world Boruc and Marshall would rotate well together but they dont!

The best options are Marshall/Speroni or Boruc/Speroni

imo there's not too much point rotating two shit defences. for example, promoted teams last season reading, southampton & west ham got home clean sheets 5, 3 & 6, respectively. liverpool got 16 in total. now we have mignolet for 5.5M£

Not quite heavy enough to be considered at present. Belongs in that second tier of players like Nolan, Snodgrass, HBA, et al that don't quite do enough points-wise.

Pretty happy with my team, feel free to criticise though:

    Mignolet, Davis
    Ivanovic, Luiz, Collins, Coleman, Tunrer(CAR)
    Hazard, Bale, Walcott, Coutinho, Thomas
    Giroud, Anelka, F.Campbell

I've gone for 2 Chelsea defenders in week 1, but plan to swap our after that, probably for Dawson or Toure, then upgrade Campbell/Anelka for a 7.0 forward depending on who starts week 1, such as Aspas or Kone.

Opinions? I personally feel I have good points scoring potential for week 1, then a nice balance available after that.

As a palace fan I love Zaha. But I'd be surprised if he started more than 1 in every 2 games, which rules him out as a ff option.

Also, he has never really scored that many in a season, I think around 10 will have been his most.

Could all change if utd sell nano and one of young/ Valencia get injured. Then £6.5m for a utd starting winger would be great!

Set up a preliminary team waiting for the America preseason tour & other friendlies to see who plays for Chelsea, Everton and the rest. American Cup is interesting as it is full of good/great teams; RM, AC, Inter, Chelsea, Everton, Juve & LA Galaxy.

Team at the moment for GW1:
    De Gea
Luiz (May change to Ivan), Zab, Coleman,
    Santi, Hazard (c), Mirallas, Navas
    J Rod, Lukaku (v), Anelka

Subs: Davis, Ben Turner, Collins, Barkley.

I have 4M in bank so I do want to change around closer to the start but for now I'm fairly happy with the backbone of the team. What do you think?

Very light up top, and to add to that two of your front men are not even guaranteed a game each week. It's ok to have the mid priced strikers if you know they will play, but most weeks I expect you will be playing 4-5-1

Even if Chelsea don't get Rooney I expect them to get another striker. If I was Chelsea boss I would play Lukaku, but I jsut worry about how much game time he will get. If he nails down a place I would have him in my side

He's done really well pre-season but yeah that's why I'm really interested in the America Cup. Chelsea got some really tough games so surely they will play what Jose thinks it's close to his first team. Maybe.

I do have 4m left so I was considering swapping one of my strikers for a bigger name but nothing stuck out. I am tempted on Rooney but unsure whether he will start/is injured.

Navas could be a risk but he is a quality player, just unsure whether he would start too. Thank you for your thoughts.

    Nobody accept Mourinho really knows who is going to be the first choice for Man City forwards;

I've come to the conclusion that for GW1 a good approach would be go with Dzeko.
It's hard enough to find the cash for any City forwards with our minds and budget on the DGW players, and Dzeko has played well in pre-season, is in favour with the boss and most importantly .... is 7.5m !
    That's a whole 3.5m less than Aguero, 1.5m less than Negredo/Jovetic.

It frees up the cash for the DGW while giving you a chance at City points, allows you a week to see who the City starters might be, and lines you up nicely for an upgrade/ double City attack when you start losing CHE/Villa DGW players in GW2/3

    What say you?

Not sure I like it... I'd say there's a decent chance Aguero starts as lone forward GW1, then where are you? Hoping for Dzeko the super-sub? Negredo would also be on the bench in this scenario. Nah, too risky for me. They have so many options at the moment.

First rule of FPL: pick players who are nailed-on.

I see your point, but at 7.5m (or less) you can get good strikers who are nailed-on.

It could pay off, but you're not really "covering" City's attack if the player you own is sat on the bench.

Or just wait and put in a similarly priced player/one with better fixtures in first week, and switch out a Chelsea/Villa player for the second? It seems too much or a risk to assume that Dzeko will insta-play, let alone any other City forward.
Im taking the cautious route with City, and then add players in when we get a better idea what formation and who will be partnered up top.

1 week won't tell us anything, Dzeko will most likely be rotated through out the season and therefore it is better to stick to the safe option Lambert/Berbatov at the same price. Furthermore, even if player A and B start for Man City GW1 it doesn't mean that they will for GW2 as players C and D will also have to get minutes.

this really only applies to those people who must have City cover in GW1 - yes, clearly no City strikers are 'nailed-on' for the moment, but my point is that if you are going to risk it, better to risk 7.5m than 11m - I think he has as much chance of playing than any other at present until we learn more

Gone for a completely new team

    Boruc, Mannone

    Terry Baines Mertesacker Toure Chester

    Snodgrass Coutinho Hazard Walcott Thomas

    RVP Anelka Dobbie

Subs are weak and a lot of people are against spending so much at the back but I think defenders are great value for money, I can see Baines outscoring forwards in a similar price bracket like Berbatov, Lambert, Aspas etc

Is there any reason not to spend a lot on the backline, if your defenders average 140 a season and you have a few big hitters in your forward 6, i can't see any reason against 4 at the back, I also think the top teams will improve defensively with Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea all look more solid at the back towards the end of last season.
