Scout Reports

Scout Report – John Brayford

Cardiff boss Malky Mackay moved to strengthen his defensive options last week with the acquisition of right-back John Brayford from Derby County. The 25-year-old arrives on a four-year contract for a reported fee of £1.3m and, along with Andreas Cornelius and Simon Moore, is one of three new arrivals to the Bluebirds so far this summer.

A long-term target of Mackay’s, Brayford spoke to the Cardiff official website upon completion of the move and admitted the opportunity of top-flight football was simply too good an opportunity to turn down:

“When I heard Cardiff were interested in signing me then I was obviously very interested, especially at the prospect of playing in the Premier League and testing myself at the highest level. Derby will always be a special Club to me, but this was an opportunity I couldn’t ignore.”

The History

The Stoke-born defender began his career at non-league Burton Albion back in 2006, scoring seven times in 77 appearances before making his way to Crewe Alexandra in the summer of 2008. Brayford scored twice in 36 appearances in his first season and despite relegation to League Two, his displays earned him the Supporters Player of the Year award. With five assists to his name the following year, Brayford won the accolade once again and was also named in the PFA Football League Two Team of the Season, with his versatility seeing him fielded at right-back and centre-half over the campaign.

Brayford was then reunited with former Burton boss Nigel Clough in the summer of 2010 after Derby County shelled out for his services. His impact was immediate with his new club’s fans – a series of consistent displays at the back harvested a goal and three assists over 45 league matches and again earned the full-back a Supporters Player of the Year Award. Brayford managed just 23 games in 2011/12 due to a recurring thigh problem but returned last term to make 40 appearances, scoring once and also supplying an assist.

With just a year left on the 25-year-old’s contract, Clough was somewhat resigned to selling the right-back on this summer but summed up just what type of player Cardiff are picking up:

“Give him time to adapt and he’ll be fine at Premier League level. John bombs up and down the right-hand side as well as anybody and he will fill the criteria Malky is looking for. Malky loves defenders who are wholehearted and brave and John has got that. He is a very, very brave player and not frightened of anything.”

The Prospects

Despite the success of Matthew Connolly at right-back last term, Brayford looks set to make his way to the head of the queue for a first-team place in the season ahead. Connolly impressed from an attacking perspective and notched five goals in the Bluebirds’ Championship-winning campaign but the former QPR man is more of a centre-half than full-back, whereas the new boy seems tailor-made to take his place on the right of Cardiff’s back-four.

Certainly, Mackay was unsparing in his praise of his new signing, admitting he’s been after Brayford for some time:

“I am a long-time admirer of John’s and I’ve watched his career closely, he was the player of the year at Burton, Crewe and Derby. He has consistently been selected in teams of the year and, for me, he was the best right-back in Championship football last season. He is extremely attack-minded and very athletic. He is somebody who desperately wants to kick on and play at the highest level. His attitude is spot-on and will add to the squad.”

Yet to be added to the Fantasy games, a price of 4.5 looks likely in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), bearing in mind the player prices so far. This would put Brayford in the same bracket as the likes of Mark Hudson (four goals and three assists last term) and Andrew Taylor (five assists), while the similarly priced David Marshall should offer save points aplenty between the sticks. Fantasy managers on the lookout for a real cut-price route into Mackay’s backline are eyeing up Ben Turner at 4.0, though – he recovered from injury to make 31 appearances in 2012/13 and may prove a budget-friendly bench-warming fifth defender to be called on in emergencies only.

Having racked up 18 clean sheets last season (10 at home, eight on the road), Cardiff are by far the most resilient of this term’s promoted clubs, though the opening schedule has hardly smiled in Mackay’s favour. By Gameweek 13, the Bluebirds will have entertained five of the previous campaign’s top six at the Cardiff City Stadium, with City, Everton, Spurs, United and Arsenal all paying visit – a run of games that’s hardly conducive to defensive investment and one which perhaps will persuade Fantasy managers to distance themselves from Mackay’s backline regulars until the schedule takes a turn for the better.

Thinking of starting with Taylor for my only 4m defender ahead of a Palace or Hull defender.

The fixtures are dire, but they seem the best bet for cleanies of the promoted teams and I'm not shopping just for the first few fixtures with my 5th defender

Brayford should have the RB slot sewn up.

I would also agree with the comment that Connolly is more of a CB, but Mackay has shown throughout the season that he prefers him at RB if at all possible. I still think Ben Turner's partnership with Mark Hudson will be first choice.

    Mignolet Davis
    Collins Toure Coleman Clyne Chester
    Bale Lampard Hazard Tonev Diame
    RVP Lukaku Rodriguez

    Early plans are Lamps/Lukaku --> Silva/Kone gw2. Hazard --> ??? gw3.

If you don't want a Chelsea defender this is pretty good.

      That being said I don't like the 2 x 5.0 mids

What about Coleman and JRod to Alcaraz and Anelka, then Chester and Diame to Turner and Jarvis

if Bale leaves, get Silva or Coutinho and knock yourself out with the other 3m

Cheers JK, although i do have 3 chelsea!

I'm torn between JRod and Anelka anyway. Interesting, i'll have a look in to it.

Diame actually has more goal threat than Jarvis, and i'm considering Jarvis' threat without Carroll in the team.

Thought I'd do a little research on Home and Away, and how much we should consider it when choosing who to play each week.

    Firstly, Teams.

Home Fortress - These are teams that are getting the vast majority of points and goals at home and struggling in comparison away from home.

    Man City - Home Points = 45, Home Goals = 41; Away Points = 33, Away Goals = 25

    Everton - HP = 42, HG = 33; AP = 21, AG = 22

    West Ham* - HP = 33, HG = 34; AP = 9, AG = 11 😯

    Norwich - HP = 31, HG = 25; AP = 13, AG = 16

    Stoke - HP = 28, HG = 21; AP = 14, AG=13

    Newcastle - HP = 28, HG = 24, AP = 13, AG = 21

You could also put Arsenal in this category because although their results were similar H/A they scored 48 goals at home and just 25 away, however they conceded less goals away from home. They seem to be playing for the 1-0s in away games

*(West Ham are the standout for me here, for those picking Carroll/Jarvis/Nolan don't expect much more than 2pts in away games)

There are also teams that seem unaffected by whether they are playing at home or away, and some that appear to be performing better away from home

Spurs won just 4 more points at home than they did away, and even scored 8 more goals away from home than they did at WHL over the season.
Villa picked up more points as well as scoring more goals away from home.

If the PL table was done on away matches only,Villa would have finished 7th, City would have been 5th, Everton 11th.

It's just something to consider when you're picking who to bench, For some teams it appears to affect performances drastically, for other sides you can almost ignore the H/A sign completely.

I'll try do another post like this with individual players to see who is performing best just at home or away and if there are any surprises.

See, this is the kind of stuff I think is very important for the teams you expect will finish in mid table/lower half. Players like Mata, Bale, RVP etc, the big hitters so to speak, seem to score well regardless and you will play them week in, week out.

For the cheapies in your team however, you would look at some sort of rotation plan and that's where you want to focus on home games and it is of course important to see where the stand out performers are here.

        Fun Fact of the day:

-Bale Home Avg = 6.15pts per
-Bale Away Avg = 9.20pts per

-RVP Home Avg = 7.75pts per
-RVP Away Avg = 7.63pts per

Conclusion: When playing La Liga Fantasy Footy this year, make sure to put the armband on Bale when away from the Bernabéu.

The season ticker that Tommy put together works on this principle.

So West Ham away are a very light goal threat, and thus the home team's CS chance is rated higher than would be the case for a game vs your average mid table team.

Hmm, that doesn't really impress too much. I currently have:

          Migs/Marshall
          Mertesacker, Turner, Yoshida, Parr, Chester
          Walcott, Hazard, Silva, Snodgrass, 5.0
          RVP, Lukaku, 6.0

Just not sure how to delegate the remaining funds yet, but I like the look of it a lot better with RVP in the team. Just LOOK at how many points go through RVP, comparing to the points distribution you will get with the City forward line this year.

With none of the pricier striker out options being that attractive - in particular doubts over RVP, Aguero/Negredo/Jovetic, Sturridge, Ade/Defoe for different reasons, i think its legitimate to start out going heavier in MF, with something like:

    Hazard - Walcott - Coutinho - Mirallas - Thomas

Allowing a cheaper FWD line of:

    Bentekke - Lukaku - Lambert

The main downside with this approach is that it requires hit(s)/wc to get Aguero/RVP in, but i'm willing to gamble that they don't hit form.

    Thoughts?

If the new boss doesn't try to implement too many tactical changes early on, they could be great value, but from what I've read, he'll want to play a more expansive game sooner or later

Was thinking about a post a saw a few weeks ago about the new BPS for next year and how it would have changed the top 20 players from last year:

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/07/15/fantasy-premier-league-201314-is-now-open/?hc_page=14#hc_comment_5036998

So I've created the best team i could out of the alternate top 20 from last season, i'll enter it on a second account and will never change the formation or team sheet, subs will play automatically if there is an opening and i'll only make transfers for serious injury and will replace with another name from the top 20 if possible. Had to choose own keeper as wasnt one in the top 20 and fit in cheapies around the first 11.

    Boruc
    Williams, Jagielka, Agger, Mertesacker
    Cazorla, Gerrard, Mata, Schneiderlin
    RVP, Lambert

    Subs: Lewis, Chester, Britton, Phillips

    Pretty decent team me thinks.

Its the same: Last year It was I think for a Forward +14ppi for a Goa and -1 for a Shot off Target.. So If a player scored a Goal and had 5 shots off target the PPI was +9.. On the same stats this year it will be 8-1 = +7PPI..

Oh shame. A shot is a shot IMO, on or off target.
A 40 yard curler hitting the post is worth negative, but a scuff straight at the keeper is a positive. 🙁

based on those dates, i would think luiz is ok and perhaps even ramires and oscar as well.

the spanish players are another story...

Would be interested to hear people's opinions on the best budget 4.5m midfielders. As I will be playing 3-4-3, this player will always be on my bench. So essentially I just want somebody who will play most games and might chip on with the odd goal/assist to add to their value. The two that most people seem to be picking are Jerome Thomas and Stephen Quinn.

The other ones that intrigue me are:

Jon Williams: Undoubtedly enormously talented but hasn't quite shown it in his goals/assists return yet. Also got forced onto the left wing towards the end of last season.

Mile Jedinak: Palace's Player of the Season 2012/13. Will play every game and could be a threat from set pieces.

Kagisho Dikgacoi: Like Jedinak, a big physical presence who should play most games and can threaten from set pieces.

Jack Colback: Often plays left-back which could dent his points potential, but is a really solid, consistent performer.

Cabral: Scored vs. Tottenham in the Asia Trophy and also had a couple of other long range shots. I'll be keeping an eye on him for the rest of pre-season.

Cabral's goal vs Tottenham was his 3rd in 8 seasons. Expect no more this year unless PDC has encouraged him to be a LOT more attacking than in his career to date.

I'm thinking of changing my username/grav and
unlinking my team because some of my rivals are
well aware of the existence of this site. Is/has
anyone else done this? Not REALLY a fan of
unlinking my team, but I guess I have no choice

I never said Azpilicueta will or will not be first choice did I? I'm saying that him being Spanish will have absolutely nothing to do with it. Your example just made the post *that* much more absurd.
