Scout Scribbles – Johnson Sidelined for Reds

Glen Johnson is ruled out “indefinitely” for Liverpool, though Jon Flanagan is back in contention. Pablo Osvaldo is suspended by Southampton for an alleged training ground altercation. Pablo Hernandez could be back for Swansea this weekend, whilst a behind-closed-doors friendly between Tottenham and West Ham sees a number of players return from injury:

Johnson Setback for Liverpool

The full-back has been ruled out until further notice by Brendan Rodgers yesterday. Speaking at his usual Thursday afternoon press conference, the Reds boss – who also confirmed Jon Flanagan is available for selection and Lucas is out for two months – went on to explain:

“Glen has played a lot of the season having been injured and really put himself out for the team, but unfortunately he’s struggled a lot with a number of injuries… He’s had a real bad ankle for a period of time, and just one or two other issues that haven’t allowed him to be 100 per cent. I think everyone has seen over many years the speed, fluency and how good he’s been, but for part of this season he’s been restricted and that’s obviously been difficult for him. I just think it’s now at that point where we need to get him right. We’ll just need to assess that and see how quickly he comes through that. The timeline he’ll be out will be indefinitely, really.”

The Scout Says: Rodgers’ update may go some way to explaining Johnson’s lack of form this season. The defender has produced a single assist so far, compared to a goal and five assists last time around, and has been a bitter disappointment to Fantasy managers in Rodgers’ second year in charge. Essentially, Liverpool now have three of their first-choice back-four injured as Johnson joins Jose Enrique and Daniel Agger on the sidelines, and whilst this allows Flanagan (4.3) or Martin Kelly (4.1) to stake a claim for the right-back berth, faith in a backline which has three clean sheets to its name in the last 19 Gameweeks could barely be lower ahead of showdowns with Everton and Arsenal in the next three.

Osvaldo Suspended by Saints

Southampton have suspended their record signing for the next two weeks following an incident at the club’s training ground. The Saints were reluctant to divulge further details, though the Press Association reports he was disciplined after headbutting and punching team-mate Jose Fonte during training on Wednesday.

The Scout Says: Osvaldo rolled up to St Mary’s having scored 16 goals for Roma in Serie A last season but it’s something of an understatement to say he’s been a disappointment for Mauricio Pochettino’s side. Having not long returned from a three-match suspension, he is now set to miss this weekend’s FA Cup clash against Yeovil as well as league games against Arsenal and Fulham. His absence bodes well for Jay Rodriguez’ chances of featuring through the middle once again, as the 6.3 priced forward looks to continue the form which has harvested nine goals and 97 Fantasy Premier League points, making him the best value striker in the game thus far.

Hernandez Boost for Swans

The Swansea winger is optimistic of recovering from a hamstring injury in time for this weekend’s FA Cup clash against Birmingham. In an injury-update article which also revealed Jonjo Shelvey is a week away from returning and Jonathan de Guzman and Nathan Dyer are back in training, Hernandez discussed his progress with the club’s official website:

“Hopefully this is the end of injuries for me, this. I have to be patient and make a 100 per cent recovery before I play because I have had a few injuries this season, which is very frustrating for me. But I have felt good in training. I have been in with the physios having treatment and working hard in the gym and on the training pitch. So this weekend is possible. I will see how it goes in training on Friday, and then I will speak with the gaffer.”

The Scout Says: The news arrives at a time when the schedule smiles kindly upon the Welsh club and may bring their assets back into our consideration. Laudrup’s side welcome Fulham, Cardiff and Palace to the Liberty over the next six and also travel to West Ham and Stoke, affording them the chance of climbing up the table to safety. With the options on the flanks set to increase, then, the 4.2-priced Alex Pozuelo may struggle to retain his first-team berth, having now started each of the last two league games due to the injury situation.

Quartet Back in Action for Tottenham

Tim Sherwood was handed a major boost yesterday after four of his injured players returned to action in a behind-closed-doors friendly against West Ham. Sandro played the first hour of the 3-0 win, whilst Jan Vertonghen, Younes Kaboul and Paulinho all featured for the first 50 minutes, with the latter amongst the scorers. Ahead of next week’s clash against City, the Spurs boss went on to say:

“It is great news to see so many lads returning from injury at such a crucial time. They have come though okay and it’s good to see them get some minutes under their belts. There is nothing like playing. With players of this quality coming back to fitness it reinforces the fact that we have strength and depth in the squad. And players with real quality and ability.”

The Scout Says: As the injuries finally begin to ease, Fantasy managers can expect to get a better angle on Sherwood’s preferred options. At the back, Vertonghen is favourite to slot into central defence, leaving Kaboul to battle it out with Michael Dawson and Vlad Chiriches for the remaining role, whilst Paulinho and Sandro add to the multitude of options in central midfield. Sherwood has promoted young Nabil Bentaleb to the XI in the last couple of matches but it remains to be seen if he can nail down a regular role – the new man in charge seems to prefer just two central midfielders, whether in a 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1, suggesting the competition for places is set to intensify.

Hammers Injuries Ease

The West Ham treatment room is also beginning to empty ahead of next week’s trip to Chelsea. Guy Demel and Ricardo Vaz Te both played 60 minutes apiece in the Tottenham defeat, with Hammers first-team coach Ian Hendon discussing their involvement after the game with the club’s official website:

“Guy and Vaz got an important hour under their belts on Thursday. That’s what the game was arranged for. The main thing was that they came through unscathed. We’ve got a 16-game season and it’s going to be massive to have extra bodies back. The more we have fit and ready to go the easier it’ll be. February is going to be a massive month with the games against teams in and around us.”

The Scout Says: Whilst Vaz Te is by no means certain to nail down a regular role, Demel has played the vast majority of games as Sam Allardyce’s preferred right-back. As mentioned in yesterday’s Scribbles, with Winston Reid also closing in on a return, the Hammers can look to the remaining schedule with a little more optimism. At 4.5, Demel’s chances of clean sheet returns are likely to be boosted by the Kiwi’s presence in the back-four, then, whilst Allardyce’s side are set for a run that reads (SWA, avl, NOR, SOU, eve, HUL, sto) from Gameweek 24 onwards.

After extensive research, Hull have kept 3 CS's with Chester playing, in 14 games.

When Chester didnt play, they kept 3 CS's, in those 8 games.

So, the stats suggest they are better without Chester.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

FPL rule changes to reward mavericks

The Casual’s post (see hot topic widget) on the danger of differentials has inspired me to think of a possible rule change for FPL.

I’ll freely admit I’m a boring, pragmatic fantasy manager that plays to get the most points I can rather than the most exciting points I can through differentials and audacious players.

But could there perhaps be a Fantasy Premier League rule change to reward more exciting fantasy manager and encourage those like me to be more interesting.

Perhaps a rule change that awards extra points for more exciting players and goals. An extra goal point for an overhead kick, or one from more than 30 yards out?

Or perhaps extra points for the more different your player is, with more goals and assist points for those with less than 1-2% ownership.

      I posted something similar before.

Bonus points per goal based on ownership.

      5% or less - 3
      5 - 10% - 2
      10 - 20% - 1

Would reward punts but would make the game a bit more luck based.

Mavericks get plenty of reward in this game already, provided they make the right choices. It's always been a high risk style of play, and can either pay off hugely or be disastrous.

It's an dimension to game that I love.

I don't have any suggestions off hand but I agree something needs to change. The increae in popularity of the game and thus this place means the level of people playing the game properly has exploded. I've been on both ends ranking wise last season and this season so far and on both ends you're left with little option. It's hard to catch up and its also hard to fall drastically if up near the top. It's boring. I've had 4 red arrows in a row now and it's barely moved me really. All the people have all the players. In fairness just scrapping the 2nd WC would benefit hugley imo

I'd like to make a maverick move, but I'm not sure if knowing that goal from overhead kick gives me one extra point, makes choosing players any different.

I got your point tough, but I think these kind of rule changes would be forgotton in october.

I don't like this at all. Everything contributing towards points should be a factor of something the players do on the field. Ownership on a fantasy site just brings in an unwelcome dimension in my view.

The only suggestion here I like is assist-the-assist but given how we all bicker about assists on matchday on here it might be unworkable.

The only rule that needs to be changed is that we should all be allowed to decide if we want to use the Jan WC or not.

Those that don't should be able to "trade" the Jan WC for something, Eg say 15pts or 2 free trades some where down the line when required.

I dislike any idea that effectively increases the luck factor further. This smacks a little of the latest gimmick from Bernie Ecclestone to double the points for the last F1 race of the season - a truly awful idea.

Something that rewards skill would be preferable, ie that makes it harder to just fit and forget. I dont think sites like this have increased the skill level of the average manager, mostly what its done is the hard work for them, reducing the pile of players to choose from and out of the many hundreds of thousands of teams created some will have the winning combination of points return.

I would like to see something that increases the skill level required of the manager. 2 WC is far too many for a start off. Remove the wildcards and give everyone 38 transfers. People will then have to manage that aspect as well. Im sure there are many other suggestions that could work to increase the skill level required from a manager.

Or maybe a something like 45 transfers with the option to purchase extra not just with points but with team value as well. Like 0.5m in the bank would buy you 2 FT or something like that.

Rewarding great goals would only make matters worse - Suarez and Yaya have pretty much owned goal of the season.

Love the idea of more points for low ownership players though.

I think it's less about points, and more about increasing the pool of viable picks each week. I'm not sure if decreasing the maximum number of players to 2 per team would have an effect as this would increase the number of 'essentials' from each team, but it would force people to look at a wider pool of players.

I like the idea of having a set amount of transfers per season and getting rid of the winter wildcard.

What about something that prevents you from getting a player if their ownership has risen to a certain level/ risen by a certain %? Not sure how this would work but it would stop everyone having the same players and force players to cast their net wider

      It makes total sense.

Remember: FPL is run by the Premier League, and the only thing the Premier League care about is selling their product - the football games.

What makes for good product to sell? Answer: goals and exciting attacking football.

So what do they want to be seen to reward in FPL? Goals and exciting attacking football!

If they could come up with well-defined terms for "exciting" goals or play to reward in FPL, I think they'd do it.

It's the reason you'll never see FPL points for blocks, tackles etc by themselves - they don't make for good product.

Nah, I don't like it. I think this game already has big enough luck factor.

Only one WC sounds good to me (this coming from someone who already used both WCs).
Also, I would like to see a more balanced bps system. This one sucks. I didnt like EA one, but it was much better than current one IMHO.

I like it mostly the way it is, with a few small tweaks such as abolishing the second wildcard (or allowing it to be played any time after 1st January, so that we weren't all forced to use it in the same month and end up with similar teams; to complement this, the first wildcard could be restricted to game-weeks before 1st January). I have floated this idea a few times already, but no-one has said whether they like or dislike the idea so I have to assume that they don't really care either way - sometimes I feel a bit like The Invisible Man!

Could someone perhaps devise a separate league for Mavericks? Or reinstate Awards for Valour for those who like such things? I'm more of a Dullard myself, and I would rather be a Dullardinho than a Maverick. (Dullards and Casuals are not the same thing - a Casual may be a Dullard or a Maverick, and so may a non-Casual - and some may even change from one to the other in mid-season).

I think the best rule change (though not necessarily one that rewards mavericks) is to allow saving of as many transfers as you like - not sure why they don't allow this anyway.

And I'd also support scrapping the January wildcard.

Allow as many players per team as you like as well - that's another pointless restriction.

Many FFS posters are in favour of scrapping the January wildcard, but I don't think FPL are likely to do that because one of the main reasons for its introduction was probably to revive interest for Casuals whose squads are in disarray by mid-season.

It was my alternative suggestion of replacing it with a Second Half-Season wildcard that no-one has commented on yet. It would allow those who don't need to change their squads much in January to save it for blank and double game-weeks instead.

Your suggestion of being allowed to carry over transfers without limit would also make it easier to deal with double and blank game-weeks, but perhaps the game should not be made too easy!

In my opinion (and from experiences this season where I've made some terrible 4-point hit decisions!), 4 point hits are just not worth it, especially for a defender.

Azpilicueta would have to keep a clean sheet (AND Southampton to concede) just for you to break even. Is it worth the risk?

To be honest, no fixture is worth a 4-point hit for a defender, now matter how nice it may look.

I did think of this as a Chester replacement. But he is liable to be rotated with Clyne for any given gameweek.

Instead, think I will downgrade Ozil and upgrade Chester to someone decent.

I thought about just swapping Chester for Bruce/McShane, but on my WC I went for a 3-way Hull/Palace/Cardiff rotation, and looking at it, I wasn't planning to play Chester for ages anyways. So that would feel like a waste of a transfer to me.

Ok guys, just thinking of the third striker to go with Suarez and Aguero

JRod is pretty decent until the seasons' end and you can play him every week bar three or four fixtures (i'd recommend a cheap Hull midfielder as your 5th mid to cover these games.
However, if you'd rather play around with the midfield, but if you fancy doing a couple of transfers (4) then this looks quite good.......

    Bony-Carrol(!)-Lukaku-Benteke
    It gives this....

FUL whm CAR NOR SOU WHM new CAR SWA ful FUL cpl SOU swa HUL PUNT(38)

No time to spend all your transfers on rotating forward. Always something comes up in mean time

From my midfield, who should be our for Mata?

Silva Oscar Cabaye Hazard [of course I keep Haza]

Have 2,9M in the bank so can switch anyone to Matador

I'm swapping Silva for Mata. I don't want both in my team given the GW 28 blank. One or the other for me

If Ramsey is starting next match, would you consider getting him on the WC?

He had an outstanding first half to the season, and I think he will continue to bring in points (maybe not quite as much, but enough to be a bargain)

Yes. Would be the first time I buy him, if he can keep it up he's still great value.

Wait and see for me. It isn't easy to be up and running after spell on the sidelines

Wengerbus will probably take it easy with him. Don't think I will be. Lucky GW24 WCers get a better idea.

What is this Yoshida love for 4.0m. He isn't starter. I think even Clyne played CB. They have that guy tough to spell Hov something too. Not worth the risk IMO. Go Ward or spend more if u ask me
