Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 28 – Sunday

Christian Benteke bags a brace as Villa hammer Norwich. Robert Snodgrass is an early weekend worry after being forced off with a wrist problem. Roberto Soldado grabs the only goal of the game as Spurs squeeze past Cardiff at the Lane, whilst Jonathan de Guzman and Glenn Murray notch a goal apiece as Swansea and Palace draw at the Liberty:

Benteke at the Double
The big Belgian’s four-match drought ended in style yesterday as he helped Villa serve up an emphatic home win over Norwich. Benteke’s two goals and maximum bonus against the Canaries helped him to a 13-point haul – his highest tally of the season – and brought his recent record to five goals and a pair of assists in his last eight league matches. Whilst a blank Gameweek 29 and home clash with Chelsea the following weekend is enough for us to steer clear for the time being, the subsequent schedule remains kind for Paul Lambert’s side. With Stoke, Fulham, Southampton and Hull still to visit Villa Park, in addition to trips to Palace and Swansea, Benteke may yet have a part to play in our Fantasy plans for the run-in. Leandro Bacuna is another name worthy of consideration. Despite being fielded at right-back in a 4-3-3, he netted for the fifth time in the league this season yesterday and has now scored in three of the last six Gameweeks for the Midlands outfit.

Injury Worries Build for Hughton
The Canaries rolled up to Villa without two of the XI that started last week’s win over Tottenham. Leroy Fer was sidelined with a hamstring injury, whilst Ricky Van Wolfswinkel also missed out due to a knee problem – replacements Wes Hoolahan and Gary Hooper combined for Norwich’s solitary strike in the 4-1 defeat, with the former finding the net. Unfortunately for Chris Hughton, however, yesterday’s result was compounded by the half-time withdrawal of Robert Snodgrass. The Scot had notched twice in his previous three matches and had started to find form but was subbed off after picking up a wrist injury – his owners face an anxious wait ahead of next weekend, with our Gameweek 29 midfield options seemingly diminishing by the day right now.

Soldado Drought Finally Over as Sherwood Rolls Out a 4-4-2
In his first league start since Gameweek 24, the Spaniard was Tottenham’s hero by grabbing the only goal of the home win over Cardiff. Tim Sherwood kept faith in the system that saw off FC Dnipro in Thursday evening’s Europa League encounter, with Soldado partnering Emmanuel Adebayor up top once more and the Togo international was again in the points by supplying the assist for the summer signing’s strike. Sherwood may have missed the talents of Christian Eriksen due to a back problem but his defence once again stood solid and delivered a third clean sheet in the last five Gameweeks – a run coinciding with the return to action of Jan Vertonghen, with Spurs conceding just twice over that period.

Solskjaer Shuffles His Pack Again
The Cardiff boss continues to utilise the depth of his squad, though the results remain the same. Yesterday saw Solskjaer make six changes from the side that were hammered at home by Hull last weekend – the Welsh club lined up in a 5-3-2 formation, with Wilfried Zaha, Magnus Wolff Eikrem and Kenwyne Jones amongst those benched, whilst Craig Noone confirmed via twitter he was missing after picking up a slight knock. The 1-0 defeat may have restricted Spurs’ attacking endeavours but the result means Cardiff have now failed to score in six of their new manager’s eight games at the helm.

De Guzman Starting to Produce Consistently
The Dutchman is becoming an increasingly influential figure for Swansea as the season picks up pace. Yesterday’s goal against Palace means de Guzman has now scored or assisted in four of his last six starts – also picking up points against the likes of City, Fulham and Liverpool in recent matches. With Pablo Hernandez subbed off early with a recurrence of his hamstring injury and both Jonjo Shelvey and Michu still sidelined, de Guzman may turn out to be a real differential punt for those eyeing up the Welsh club over the next few weeks. Garry Monk’s side have a blank next weekend but, following that, clashes with West Brom, Norwich and Hull in the subsequent four may well appeal.

Murray on the Spot for Palace
Fit enough only for the bench after picking up a midweek training ground knock, the forward replaced Tom Ince at the break as Tony Pulis moved to two up top. The Eagles boss was rewarded after Murray stepped up to slot home a late spot-kick and deny Swansea the points, though much of the talk centred around the absence of Jason Puncheon. Unconfirmed reports suggest Pulis indicated that Puncheon was “rested” for the Liberty showdown but, given that the wide man had started each of the previous 14 Gameweeks, yesterday’s turn of events is hardly reassuring for those owners who were banking on his presence for the already decimated Gameweek 29 schedule next weekend. Ince’s half-time withdrawal hardly bodes well for his game time, either.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

My patience with Benteke finally paid off. Choosing him over Ade some weeks ago was still a poor decision though, but at the moment all that is water under the bridge.

Honestly, why would anyone play Puncheon away over Benteke at home to Norwich? You just got extremely lucky with that one.

I don't think they'd score nearly as many if the SaS weren't around to relieve the pressure from having to get goals in. Gerrard's goals are mostly from penalties they've drawn too remember.

Maybe not. But City struggle without Aguero. When Suarez or Sturridge were out the rest of the attack still scored some goals to add to the other strikers goals.

I think the great City side is a bit of a myth. Aguero, Kompany, Hart and Yaya are top class, the rest are a bit behind.

I rate Silva, even Nasri, higher than Hart.
Admittedly he's good on his day, but those concentration lapses occur too often, IMO.

Sorry. Forgot Silva, half-thinking of his poor Goal returns. A sublime footballer. I'm hoping Hart will get back to his best for the a World Cup.

Liverpool have Suarez. Sturridge not near top class yet. Needs a few consistent seasons. Gerard's best days are behind him. Mignolet might get there eventually. There's potential in Sterling, Coutinho and Flanagan.

Haha is this the one that Enrique "assisted" by kicking the ball into the box from his own half and having it hit a defenders hand? If so, absolutely livid still. Had Gerrard captain to my rival's Sturridge captain and Enrique. Won him the league...

Yeah, but I'm getting the United defender this GW.

        So it's really:

        Evra, Snodgrass and Yaya
        or
        Vidic, Adam Johnson and Hazard

Tell me if my logic is flawed here.

Lots of people are advising each other to save their free transfers this week, in order to use them the following week to build a team of Double Gameweek players for GW31. The downside will be fielding less than 11 players this week. Ok, I kinda get that.

But surely having a player that plays once over a team that plays zero (Gameweek 29) is the same, if not better than having a team that plays twice over a team that plays once (Gameweek 31).

Excuse my slightly crude example - in GW29 Chelsea are playing 100% more games than City (1:0). In GW31, City are playing 100% more games than Chelsea (2:1).

Does it not stand to reason then that, instead of fielding a sub-11 team, we should be putting just as much emphasis on getting GW29 right, as GW31?

The logic is that players you would want for a longer run do not have fixtures on GW29. Was there a different bunch of teams, I would take hit to line up 11 now, but with these crap teams, I would have to take hit to get rid of them immediately afterwards, and that doesn't pay off.

GW31, on the other hand, has a whole bunch of tasty potentially big haul fixtures for players that we actually want.

No because 2 games give a greater chance of "doing something big" than 1 does, so the odds are in favour of a bigger points differential between the 1-2 games, than the 0-1 comparison.

I do see the point you are trying to make though.

Actually, they will have those two games in either case, just some teams have on different GW's and some on one and the same. There's an increased possibility of rotation in DGW too, plus the DGW'rs may be tired for the second match and fail it, so it's not at all that a blank + a DGW would be just like that more valuable than having matches on two separate GW's. For captaincy, it's of course great, but you don't have to have 11 DGW'rs in your squad to have that captain.

Yeah, I'm just looking at the direct GW 29 vs DGW comparison.

Whatever the fluff around it all, I would rather focus on a DGW than fielding an 11 in GW29 that comprises players I don't really want that much going forward.

I think you'd be right if it weren't for the fact that there are so few players who play this week that you'd want long term (and don't already have). Assuming everyone has Hazard, there's only really Chelsea defenders and maybe a Southampton player if you don't already have a few. United if you're that way inclined.

Aside from that, who is there?

That was my other thought actually. There are way more options for the DGW's than there are for this week. Still, always go for a home attacker who is in form - Hazard it is.

I definitely agree with this. Everyone is obsessed with DGWs, but what is important is your GW rank not just the number of points you get. It could well turn out that just having 11 players playing this week is equivalent in terms of GW rank to a high score of 90 points, for example in the DGW.

Just to make the point clearer - you'd rather want to be GW rank #1 when the top score is 160 than to be GW rank #1 when the top score is 80.

In the absence of anybody being unable to afford Yaya back in...Silva has 6 pts per game when playing any part of any match together with Aguero, good stuff...Nasri is a lowly 4.5...Hard to work out any meaningful number for YAYA due to the number of pens and kicks he's banged in just as Aguero has left the pitch..needless to say it's very high in any event, and is obviously 1st pick.

I've been one of those fools who have held onto Silva for most of the season, and watched Toure run away with it. However, I've always been optimistic that the partnership with Aguero is what will gain there turns, so he's penciled in for the double for me.

I'm a card carrying member of the Silva Will Outscore Yaya club. We meet under bridges to drink meths and mumble about jammy penalties and unnatural conversion rates.

I dropped Silva this week for Bob Snod, partly so that I could assess Yaya and Silva more objectively. I have to say, apart from one fairly feeble shot, Silva didn't look very impressive in the Cup final. But then, neither did Yaya until his goal. I don't know what to think anymore but the sheer weight of evidence is making me think I might want to cancel my membership to the aforementioned club.

          😀

I wish I still believed in Silva. Getting him over Yaya solves problems for me. It allows me to get Evra or Zabaleta instead of Kolarov. But yesterday I decided to get Yaya, in full expectation that he will do absolutely nothing, and I was delighted at the prospect. It's a strange feeling.

I'm going Aguero, Yaya, Zaba for GW31 to leave Mata in for his last appearance in my team this season. After that Zaba will have to go to allow me to double up with Silva and Yaya in midfield.

    GW29:

Shaw - Burner - Yoshida (yeah right)
    Noone - Lallana
    RVP (C) - Adebayor

    Adrian - Mannone - Kosc - Vlaar - Gerrard - Sterling - Cazorla - Suarez

    2FTs, 2.1m in the bank.

I'm thinking of Cazorla ---> Mata, and then saving the other to use next week towards the DGW.

    Sound ok?

      (1-2-5-1)
      Boruc
      Terry Ward
      Hazard Lallana Adam Noone Mata
      Adebayor

I'm not going to take a hit unless mass injuries occur. I'll probably get a defender in to bring me up to 10, but I'm ok with 9 this week as there's no one I really want who has a game.

I'm slightly short on players, and thanks to Hull going through in the cup, also keeperless
I have 1 FT to improve this:

            Azpilicueta, Dann, Olsson
            Hazard, Mata, Lallana, Puncheon
            Adebayor

I'm not wasting a transfer on my keeper, but will drop Koscielny or Cazorla for an extra player. I'm just hoping Puncheon gets some game time, I'm down to 7 if he doesn't :/

Depends on the team, a lot could change yet with injuries and form (townsend anyone?)
We should get through though, hopefully Woy instructs them to actually pass it about a bit instead of give it to Gerrard to lump it up

If teams draw, a replay could be scheduled at the expense of the DGW fixture.

                  Current team:

                  Adrian Mannone

                  Chambers Olsson Ivanovic Coleman Azpi
                  Noone Lallana Hazard Eriksen Yaya
                  Suarez Sturridge Adebayour

                  2FT, £3.7 ITB

Got 4 playing defenders this GW, so looking to replace Eriksen or possible Noone with DGW'er - don't care if i loose expected 2 pts on that this week. Def want to use a FT this week to prepare for DGW

                  Alternatives:

                  Eriksen -> Nolan/Mata/Sterling/Colback
                  Noone -> Nolan/Sterling/Colback/AJ
Ade -> Rooney (c) as punt for this GW only (planning to bring in Aguero)

totally lost on this one - your thoughts
                  What to do for GW29-31?

This is how I am setting it up as things stand:

                      Mannone/Adrian
                      Coleman/Zabaleta/Ward/Bardsley/Chambers
                      Hazzy/Yaya/Mirallas/Sterling/Colback
                      SAS

Won't go with Lallana as I think Mirallas will be a regular starter, just dropped for a rest, and they have 11 fixtures left over 9 for Southampton.

Tempted to go Adam Johnson over Raheem Sterling for the extra 2 fixtures, not sure whether to back the £1m so I can stay flexible.

                          That's pretty similar to my midfield;
                          Haz Yaya Lallana Mirallas Pozuelo

I want AJ for the double and Sunderland's fixtures are pretty good after it too but Lallana and Mirallas both also have good fixtures so I have no idea who to take out, upgrading Poz is not an option because I need funds for Aguero. Only option left really is to downgrade Coleman, could cancel out his CS potential with Alcaraz but his goal threat remains. Tough one

                        Tony Warner.
Here's my Tony Warner history. Summer of 97 or 98, Liverpool trained in Oslo, close to my home. I and my mate went to see them, and after the training, Tony - as the only player - refused to give his autograph to my mate. Reason? He wore a Man Utd t-shirt.
                        I can respect that...

                        Oops. Koscielny is actually Evra.

                        Thanks for all your replies!

                      WC GW30 decided

                      Mannone/Adrian
                      Coleman/Zabaleta/Ward/Bardsley/Chambers
                      Hazzy/Yaya/Mirallas/Johnson/Noone
                      SAS

Going with AJ over Sterling for the extra 2 DGWs. Anyone see any improvements or tricks missed? Thanks 🙂

Swap a different Kevin in for your current Kevin in Midfield and I like it.

                        No Chelsea defence?
