Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 19 – Monday

Adam Lallana scores twice as Liverpool ease past Swansea at Anfield. Alberto Moreno, Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho all serve up the points, whilst Gylfi Sigurdsson prods home the visitors’ consolation.

Lallana at the Double

The summer signing threw his hat in the ring as a viable differential for our five-man midfields by bagging a brace in last night’s comprehensive 4-1 win. Fielded on the right of a front three once again, Lallana has started each of the last six Gameweeks and, with three strikes and an assist over that period, he is becoming increasingly influential in Brendan Rodgers’ 3-4-3 formation. Certainly, at a cost of 8.3, he’s far from budget friendly but the Reds upcoming fixtures (LEI, sun, avl, WHM) looks set to bring their main men onto our radars as they belatedly hit their stride.

Henderson in the Points as Rodgers Rings the Changes

Rodgers’ decision to make four alterations saw Steven Gerrard drop to the bench as the versatile Henderson moved into central midfield, allowing Javier Manquillo the right wing-back berth. Handed a share of set-pieces in his captain’s absence, Henderson laid on two of his side’s goals – taking his tally to three assists in the last trio of matches.

At 6.0, the former Sunderland man is a lot easier on the budget than the likes of Lallana, Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho ahead of the kind run of matches and looks nailed on, regardless of formation. Coutinho also ticked over by picking up an assist last night, whilst Sterling, in spite of an impressive shift through the centre, delivered a frustrating blank after hitting the woodwork twice.

Rodgers’ tinkering also saw Alberto Moreno get amongst the goals. Fielded as a left wing-back, the Spaniard’s opener served notice of his possible out-of-position potential, though it remains to be seen whether he can nail down a regular role – he’d started just two of the seven league outings prior to last night. Elsewhere at the back for Rodgers’ side, Martin Skrtel earned a fifth caution of the campaign, meaning he’ll miss Thursday’s clash with the Foxes.

Siggy Remedies Travel Sickness

Whilst Wilfried Bony served up a blank before being subbed off on the hour mark, the Swansea midfielder notched for the second successive Gameweek. Sold by over 200,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers in the last 10 days, Sigurdsson’s failure to produce attacking returns in each of his previous six road trips saw him take a place on many a Fantasy manager’s bench last night – many were left ruing that decision after a close-range effort spoiled the Reds’ clean sheet and took him up to fourth in the FPL midfield standings.

With Bony set to leave imminently for the Africa Cup of Nations, there were concerns over the Icelandic international’s points potential, but judging by the last two matches, it seems he’s found his scoring touch just in time to cushion the blow of the Ivorian’s departure.

When do they release your cup opponent and will there be time to make changes after seeing him team?

I have 2 ft and I'm pretty happy with my team. Was gonna ditch siggy but with 2 in 2 it feels a bit wrong. Was thinking that covering my cup opponent made sense since we have a trophy up for grabs for the best cup run

Disregarding the potential for either to be missing through injury/suspension, who would you rather have this week:

I am in a similar boat. Can't decide between Sterling, Lallana and Silva.

Sterling: Why - because he has good fixtures and looked a very good attacking threat last night. Why not - I feel he gets too many chances he doesn't convert.

Lallana: Why - Great form and looked incisive. Why not - not cosistent, first goal was gifted by Fabianski

Silva: Why- great goal scoring form. Why not - I don't know whether he will return to assisting the assister once Jovetic is back.

      Confused :/

Personally this is the stage where I will take it 1 gameweek at a time, making transfers with the aim of instant results. This way I'm poised and happy to wildcard if it feels like a good idea.

Sterling will not be banned. The FA only intervene when the referee does not report the incident, and as it was so close to the assistant, there is no way it was not seen.

No FT. 1.9m in the Bank. Getting Cesc/Hazard and Kane in next week for Eriksen and Bony

What I'm worried about is my defense. Should I take a hit? (If yes, Yun to?)
Is STaylor playing? (why did he not play last game? Rotation?)

    Guzan (Krul)
    Azpi Baines STaylor (Skrtel Yun)
    Silva Downing Alexis Siggy (Eriksen)
    Austin Bony Costa

    Is my logic flawed?

In a week where there is a clear captain favourite (say Aguero at home against a promoted side after a hatrick).

For argument sake say %60 of active players captain him and you do too.

If he does well your rank will v likely rise but not by too much as many also have captained him.

You dont captain him and fail with your choice its highly likely your rank will take a big hit.....

The definition of a safe choice......

In a week with no clear captain choice (its spread between 4/ players with a max of about 15% on one choice)

If you go get your option right and most other options fail you will rise dramatically up the rankings as you and below 15% of other players gained big points.

If you get it wrong you shouldn't see too much of a dip in rank because only a max of 15% did get it right

So surely in a week like this where there is no clear captain choice the opportunity to rise in ranking is higher....

I think sometimes people forget we are playing against only owned players and ownership has a big impact on rank.

Yes, absolutely. Austin on Sunday was captained by enough players to mean that if you didn't captain him, you effectively didn't gain anything from owning him. This week, there is no player with big enough ownership being heavily captained to do that.

This is also a week where captaining a heavily owned, but not widely captained, player like Hazard or Sanchez could also be a big opportunity.

Case in point if you brought in diouf the other day and captained him when austin was the clear favourite yes you would of flew up the rankings and kudos if you managed it. but if you didn't bring him in and captain him (im sure no-one did) it has very little effect on your rank....

So by all means try the Diouf approach and if you hit it then good luck to you but i'm guessing the success rate would be very low...

Unless you happened to know more about diouf than anyone else, and you correctly asserted that he was more likely to score than Austin.

            Yes I agree with that.

I was just saying this doesn't mean it should affect decisions. Ownership affects variance but not expectation.

Yeah i would never pick a player purely on ownership.

I didn't even own costa during his early season form

Like you say if we KNEW for some reason the popular option would fail then by all means go against the grain

OK good I agree with you. I guess the problem is that 'safe' has positive connotations. In this context 'safe' is very literally meaning risk averse.

I now realise you weren't saying we should captain the high ownership player, so I agree completely.

It is true, but it shouldn't affect decisions. You want the most points. If everyone is captaining a high ownership player and you're fairly confident it isn't the best choice, it wouldn't be 'safe' to captain him so much as ruled by fear of failure.

When a highly owned player is captained AND is the correct choice, that is a time you really need to own him, but because it is right, not because of ownership.

Yes but its how it affects your rank that were talking about.

If you dont captain that safe player and he performs well your rank takes the hit. its not about the points in that situation.

If he doesn't perform and you do well with your differential of course it effects your rank but not the masses too much.

Generally the standout captain choice is the best choice anyway, in terms of probability, but not always.

Last week people were getting a bit over optimistic with Austin IMO. You could say it was safer to captain Austin as most of the serious players did so. However, the bookies had Silva down as noticeably more likely to score, so was it really 'safer' to captain austin?

yes because the majority captain Austin.

I wasn't saying your reasoning was flawed. More that this has been the case every week for the five now that Aguero has been out. And for people with memories a little longer, even when Aguero was in, it was often the case that you couldn't split him or Alexis in his purple patch, or Hazard at home. There is rarely one absolute stand out candidate. It's more often the case that there are two or three choices, and it will always be a tough choice as its such an important thing to get right.

Think it's just a case of really bad luck to be honest. He was a differential with form and a good fixture. The fact that every single other captain option scored 8+ points made it all the more damaging!

I think D1sable is right though. It's all about ownership and the percentages and that's what you have to play in order to move up the rankings. However judging what constitutes a safe pick or a gamble is not always clear before a gameweek starts. Hence why we all deliberate so much!

Interesting argument, and I mainly agree. One caveat I would add is that where you say

"If you get it wrong you shouldn't see too much of a dip in rank because only a max of 15% did get it right"

you are assuming that only one of the possible captaincy options did well. It might be that two or three of the potential captaincy options did well, while yours didn't (this has happened to me on a couple of occasions this season) and in this case, about 30%/45% of players would have gotten it right, meaning that you can expect to drop further down the rankings. Sorry to be pedantic.

I think your logic is flawed.

If you captain different players than others for two GWs,
and your captain scores more than the others in one of those GWs and less than the others in the other GW,
but the combined total of your captain points over the two GWs is the same as the others,
then the overall effect on your rank compared with the others will be zero.

It shouldn't matter whether or not your player is the popular choice - except insofar that he might be the popular choice because he's also the best choice.
If you think that the popular choice is the most likely to score the most points then go along with it.
But if you have good reason to believe that another player will outscore the popular choice then go for that other player instead.

There may be certain situations though in which it is better to play safe, or to take a risk, rather than playing the percentages. For example in a head-to-head or cup match, or towards the end of the season when you are trying either to protect your lead or to play catch-up in your mini-league.

You only mention the bad effects of choosing a different captain from the very popular choice if the popular choice does well.

But if the very popular choice fails and your alternative choice does really well, that's when you should get a really dramatic rise up the rankings.

    Advice from a sheep.

DGW season approaches. FA Cup 4th round matches start after this GW, with replays likely to disrupt the schedule. Holding your WC will enable you to reassemble your team after loading up on DGW players and get returning players like Aguero, Sturridge, Walcott etc.
