Scout Report – Jozy Altidore

Paolo Di Canio’s summer overhaul of the Sunderland first-team squad continued on Tuesday afternoon with the acquisition of Jozy Altidore from Dutch outfit AZ Alkmaar. The 23-year-old arrives at Wearside on a four-year contract and is the Black Cats’ eighth signing over the close-season, with more new faces still expected to follow:

The transfer ends a lengthy chase for the US international’s signature, with Sunderland seeing off the challenge of a number of suitors, including Italian side Lazio, to bring Altidore to the Stadium of Light. Speaking to the club’s official website, the forward was delighted to return to the English top-flight, having previously plied his trade with Hull back in 2009/10:

“Anybody that knows anything about football knows the Premier League is the full package, it’s the biggest league in the world. I’m thrilled to be here, and I’m looking forward to getting adjusted as quickly as possible. It’s a fantastic club, and I’m really excited about the season. I hope the fans like what I do on the pitch.”

The History

Altidore’s career began as a 16-year-old back in 2006 with the New York Red Bulls. Over the course of a couple of years, he produced 15 goals and four assists in 37 MLS appearances before signing for Spanish club Villarreal in June 2008. His time in Spain was disastrous, though. Altidore managed a single goal from nine appearances and was sent out on loan on three occasions, with temporary stints at Xerez, Hull and Bursaspor harvesting just two goals and eight assists from a combined total of 40 league matches.

A move to Alkmaar in the summer of 2011 proved the making of Altidore. His first season in Holland produced 16 goals and three assists from 34 league games before he stepped up another level last year, with an impressive 31 goals and seven assists from 39 domestic matches. Despite his relatively young age, Altidore has already turned out for the US national side 60 times, finding the net on 17 occasions.

The Prospects

Clearly, Di Canio’s relentless summer recruitment policy is indicative of a lack of faith in the squad inherited from Martin O’Neill – the Italian’s thoughts on his rebuilding program highlight just what he expects from his side next season:

“We are going to build a very, very good team with a very good work ethic. That will be crucial on the field – we are going to face the opponents, we are going to challenge the opponents. All the individuals wearing the shirt need to make the fans proud because this is the minimum that we can do because we have a big privilege to wear the shirt. My team and the players I select will always have to wear this shirt with honour, dignity and respect, otherwise they can’t play under me.”

Having also criticised the fitness levels of players under the previous regime, Di Canio has already introduced a summer boot camp with double training sessions in order to ensure his charges are capable of implementing a high energy pressing game. Indeed, the Black Cats strolled to a 13-1 friendly win over a local XI on Wednesday evening, with Altidore climbing off the bench to notch on his debut.

In all likelihood, Sunderland – providing Di Canio keeps the dressing room on his side – could be a far different proposition next time around, with a new style of play and numerous new signings for Fantasy managers to consider. While the influx of new players currently casts question marks over several starting positions in the Sunderland first-team, the situation up front seems fairly straightforward. Di Canio looks set to pair Altidore with Steven Fletcher up top for the season ahead, in an attempt to address the dire scoring record that saw the Black Cats find the net just 41 times last term – a record superior to just two clubs, Stoke (34) and QPR (30). A front two suggests Stephane Sessegnon will either be forced to the flank or, as suggested by previous reports, sold on as Di Canio restructures his side. Elsewhere up top, Danny Graham and Connor Wickham seem set to be forced further onto the periphery as a result of the new boy’s arrival.

Many will perhaps be sceptical of Altidore’s impact, given that he produced a single goal in 28 appearances for Hull but bearing in mind he was just 20-years-old at the time, playing for a team near the foot of the table, his lack of impact is a little understandable. His phenomenal record for Alkmaar last term bodes well for his potential and speaks volumes for his development, with the US international boasting the height, pace and physique required to flourish alongside Fletcher.

Priced at just 6.3 in the Sky Sports game, Altidore should come in around 6.5 to 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and could prove a decent mid-price option, though there’s no doubt his arrival will boost Fletcher’s goal potential. Given that the Scot notched 11 times in 28 matches in his debut season in a struggling Sunderland side, he may still remain the main man for Di Canio’s side, with his predatory instincts benefitting from a more physical presence alongside him this time round.

With a home game against Fulham and trip to Palace in the opening three matches, Di Canio’s side are handed the chance to hit the ground running early on. If Altidore is quick out the blocks, he could well make a persuasive case for inclusion in our three man frontlines but the downside is that the first few months look tricky overall for the Black Cats, with a schedule over the opening 19 Gameweeks rated third most difficult of any side by our ticker. From Gameweek 4 onwards, Sunderland face Arsenal, Liverpool, United, City, Chelsea and Spurs across six of seven home games – a run that is perhaps enough to deter most from investing in Sunderland’s main assets until the fixtures smile a little kinder later in the season.

Anyone with experience of playing the Metro game, as Sky seems to me prefers a completely different way of setting these prices -- looking at the players' prices, do you think we can draw any conclusions as to what the prices will be in the FPL game?
Seems to me Metro's price scale resembles to some degree that of FPL. Thoughts?

Meh. Similar but not the same. There's no point speculating on prices.

Both Sky and Metro have repriced based on last year's performances, and we'll doubtless see most of last year's FPL favourites demanding big premiums this year.

Many reports saying Thiago to Bayern is done. Though I'm always sceptical with any deals, if it's true and both Strootman and Thiago have gone with 2 days then it really does make me question what the feck is going on at United. I know Moyes liked to wait on a player when at Everton, but he's competing in a different market now, you can't sit back and wait. if you want the player, get him, otherwise you can be almost sure someone else will.

Pretty sure Moyes doesnt have any part in negotiations. Especially with SAF as director of football.

SAF is not Director of Football as far as i know, just on the board. I'm not sure Moyes would have taken the job if he wasn't going to have a say on transfers.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't numerous managers before Fergie have issues at United because former managers were on the board? Going way back and I'm not sure if I'm correct but if so I don't know how I feel about Fergie being on the board...

Fergie has been trying to give Moyes a free role, I read he might not be turning up to United's first home game against Chelsea, as if he does the media will cut to him looking grumpy if Chelsea score.

I think Moyes does have control over transfers, and really should have the budget for £18m on Thiago. That is a bargain, why didn't united just pay up?

Thiago to united was a deal done a few days ago too!

but I think Bayern+Pep are sure more attractive to any player, especially for an ex-Barca player, I can see why Thiago easily choose Bayern over united

Is there any way you can build a team with Hazard (who should play in the hole, could be on pens and takes corners), Bale (who takes corners, free kicks and just is Bale), Coutinho (in the hole, on the wing, assist machine), Van P (is Mr FPL) and Aguero (pens etc.) in???

    I would imagine they would be priced 10, 12, 9, 13.5 and 11?

Hopefully it will be more like 10, 12, 8, 13, and 10.5 (since Aguero started last year at 11 and didn't have a great season, reflective of his price?)

Even if the prices are the latter, that would mean:

    4.5 / 4.5 (9)
    5 / 4.5 / 4.5 / 4 / 4 (22) Uber defence
    Hazard / Bale / Coutinho / 4.5 / 5 (39.5)
    Van P / Aguero / 6 (29.5)

    (100 mill)

    1) Do you think this is possible?

    2) Do you think it is worth weakening the rest for the sake of that strength.

I feel they will all be essential next year.

who cares if the team is unbalanced?

Are the points spread equally across the team? No attackers score more points than defenders, thus more cash should be ploughed into attack. The big teams are generally worse for CS in the first half of the season, so why waste 6m on elite defenders. IMO they are best saved for Jan when they will tighten up, we will have a wc and more cash.

True. But that means starting a mid and one or two defenders who are likely to get very little point hauls. Taking that into consideration, I'd much rather have a cheaper striker who may be able to emulate RVP's ppg, and upgrade to a mid-priced mid like Snodgrass or Nolan.

Cheers guys, I love having the heavy hitters...

I had Van P, Aguero and Suarez up top for a few GWs last year and then Aguero got injured and Suarez 1 match ban.

But those two GWs all three smashed it.

It's probably not sensible to go with all them... But pens, free kicks, corners and all round ability, plus the fact your covering yourself with Spurs, United, City, Chelsea and Liverpool is pretty decent.

I doubt I will have all five. Maybe four if it is feasible I don't like it that weak around the rest of the team.

No, either RVP has to go or Coutinho/hazard to a cheap mid to rotate with the other two mid priced mids.

Personally unless I see some unbelievable value players a la michu and fellaini last year then RVP is going nowhere near my team until I have enough value built up to be able to buy him without sacrificing too much elsewhere.

The only reason those that got RVP last year did well was Michu and Fellaini enabled it imo and even then it wasn't until after xmas that you started to see teams with RVP starting to rise to challenge near the top of the overall standings in FPL.

Thanks all. You're right it is too unbalanced. But it's tempting... And I think that's where the love affair stops for all five of them in one team...

Coutinho by the way, is going to be fantasy gold dust this season... He was the same at espanyol... Get ON him guys, seriously.

i would start with a similar team. it's much more sensible to invest in proven FPL performers like RVP,Aguero,Hazard,Coutinho and Bale at the start rather than investing in on and off players from mid table teams.

see how it goes for maybe 3 gws. then if there's someone hitting form from any of the mid table teams like Michu last year, then transfer him in for your least performing heavy hitter and upgrade elsewhere.

Coutinho isn't proven yet imo. He had a decent start to his career in England, but who's to say he will do well from a fantasy point of view next season?

he will be the Mata of this season (fantasy wise) imo. always seems to be involved in some way with the goal scored and that usually transforms into fantasy points. then again, can always downgrade him to a Nolan,Snodgrass,Ramirez etc. if he flops.

upgrading is always the difficult part. more often than not requires 2 transfers.

It's not something I'd go for. Looks good on paper but it's just too unbalanced for my liking. With a cheapo Def and sub bench I'd nearly guarantee there'd be some weeks you wouldn't field 11 players. I could be wrong though.
Anyway, it's more fun having some mid range price players in there. How satisfying is it when your 6.5 player outscores Bale and RVP?

He's decent enough, especially for a back up. Id question why he would actually want to move away from a club he captains & plays for week in week out to go and sit on the bench elsewhere.

Broadly similar to FPL...goals, assists and clean sheets are rewarded. Big difference is there's no bonus and its purely driven by OPTA so there are lots of extra pts for completed passing, blocks, tackles etc. Scoring wise its great. Main problem this season is that they've made the pricing really harsh. There are either lots of cheap non players or loads of expensive players....very little in the middle.

Another key thing to realise with the scoring is that good passing mids who can also score are the best to get. Cazorla was a beast last season.

attackers and mids score broadly the same so its not that much of an issue. It does mean there are three attacking spots to fill compared to five mids. They have classed alot of wingers as forwards so its not as OOP as in FPL.

The real problem is the pricing and the lack of quality in the mid price area.

    BAP system

I have been doing some reading up on the statistics of football and have stumbled across some information about the EA Sports Index and its future replacement. There appears to be two major flaws to the current baps systems, The Models Aims and the Models Mechanics.

    The Models Aims

Markov process models for association football are designed by academics to accurately model the requirements needed to score a goal and therefore win the game. They can include everything from keeping possession to taking a shot, but in principle the point of these models is to map the contributions to scoring goals. I dont think I am alone in the belief that the bonus points system should be aimed at the aspects of the game that arent already points scoring.

    The Models Mechanics

This is the interesting bit, evaluating the EA Sports Index against actual match shows that there is very little correlation between the PPI scores and the which team wins. The use of extra PPI for winning suggests that the model isnt accurate in its modelling itself. Note these comparisons were evulated using Opta Statistics so were not fraught with the inaccuracies of the press association.

Now with no connection to EA Sports next year I cannot imagine that fpl will continue to use this inaccurate model as there are quite a lot of better models available within the academic journals. As such, I would expect a high tendencancy in the baps towards highly involved attacking players. Again, its not about the quality of passes, its about the quantity of them.

Exactly, the models are generated by academics to better judge the strength of teams. Stoke beating United doesnt automatically make them better, and for betting purposes it can act as a red herring.

Would love to compare RVP's ownership from people on FFS to FPL when the season starts.

I reckon he will have around 30-35% ownership come GW1 in FPL... many on here saying due to "bad" fixtures and high price they won't be getting RVP.

I still think it's a huge risk, as he's the focal point in United's attack (and United rarely are kept out)

What was his ownership at the start of last year. I wasn't around and can't remember but I imagine most got him week 2 or 3( including me) and he scored more in 11-12 than 12-13

Talks between Bayern and Thiago are "at an advanced stage", but the deal hasn't been completed (as was claimed by the ever-unreliable Sky Sports Italia).

The players in 1 seem more likely to get MOTM awards too. Wilshere is a media darling, same for Carroll at West Ham. And Mirallas is a bargain and potential OOP

    Hi Guys,

Been a bit of a recluse the last few months, just wanted to share a couple of views.

Bony and Wanyama are real coups for both Swansea and Southampton respectively. Bony is going to alleviate a lot of pressure on Michu, and I think he will flourish in the premier league in the same way Lukaku of last year, and Drogba have done in the past. Tall, strong, athletic - he should take the premiership by storm and I am strongly considering him for my team. Wanyama on the other hand is going to inject some real quality into that midfield. His tackling is superb from the clips ive seen of him and I'm actually very suprised a bigger club hasnt scooped him up.

I think that Bony is going to be the jewel in the crown of Swansea, and while Wanyama isnt a viable fantasy option in my opinion, his arrival strongly boosts the defence of that club and with their opening fixtures, i'm jumping aboard.

I think he also boosts the attack, him and Schneiderlin in the middle frees up their attacking quartet to worry about the attack

This means I'll probably buy Gaston :roll|:

Yeah Grade 3 is pretty serious because the muscle is completely torn. I dunno I'm no expert 😉 You hear some people that tear their ACL being out for 9 months to a year. Spraining a ligament wouldn't be anywhere near that long though.

Anelka.....cheeky punt as a second / third striker, esp if playing say 3-4-3 ?

Arsenal can't get rid of Bendtner either, whose move to Eintracht Frankfurt has broken down irretrievably due to financial issues even though Arsenal were prepared to pay a percentage of the player's wages.

That is the price we pay for paying these squad players such high wages. 2.5m euros for Gervinho is a bit of a joke though.

He'll get him too. But a midfielder is where they need someone. None of the current lot stand out.
Strange how easily they won the title last year.
Celtic in a 1 horse race won the same gameweek by I think 1 point more. Prem was 1 horse last year despite an average midfield.

With Jose back at Chelsea and City spending thoug (and no fergie) this year will surely be close.
