Scout Scribbles – Hernandez Close to Swansea Comeback

Pablo Hernandez could be back for Swansea’s home game with Sunderland next weekend. Robin Van Persie admits he needed injections to play in United’s match against the Black Cats last week, Daniel Sturridge praises his flourishing partnership with Luis Suarez, Ashley Cole remains sidelined with a rib problem and Mladen Petric is looking for his first start for the Hammers against City:

Hernandez Targets Swans Return

Swansea were handed a major boost yesterday after their Spanish midfielder revealed he was closing in on a return to action for the first time since late August. Speaking to the club’s official website, Hernandez seemed optimistic of proving his fitness in time for next weekend’s home game against basement-dwellers Sunderland:

“It was a shame for me because I felt I put in my best performance so far this season against West Brom, and then I pick up a hamstring problem. I’ve had to miss seven games so it has been a frustrating period. But now I feel stronger and more confident of being available for the Sunderland game. This week has been very important for me and hopefully, with a couple of more days training, the manager will see that I am ready for this game.”

The Scout Says: After a strong pre-season for Michael Laudrup’s side , Hernandez was quick to make an impact on the domestic front with a goal, two assists and three bonus points in the opening three Gameweeks of the campaign earning him a bandwagon. Having since dropped from 6.2 to 5.9, a return to action is likely to bring him back onto Fantasy radars ahead of a very favourable run of games – with home matches against Sunderland, West Ham and Stoke allied with trips to Cardiff and Fulham in the next five, Hernandez – whose ownership now sits at just 3% – is definitely one to monitor if he can prove his fitness prior to the weekend deadline.

Sturridge Praises Suarez Partnership

Daniel Sturridge has discussed his flourishing up front partnership with Luis Suarez after the Uruguayan’s return from suspension has helped Liverpool climb to second in the table:

“He’s a nice guy and we have great chemistry on the field, and we get on well off it so it’s good. It’s easier when you’ve got somebody like Luis, who can help you share the goals out, and we’ve also got the likes of Steven Gerrard and Victor Moses who can pitch in. So there are goals throughout the team. Hopefully we can continue with the form we’ve got at the moment.”

The Scout Says: Currently top scorer in the Premier League, there’s no doubt Sturridge’s prospects have been boosted by Suarez’ comeback. While many had feared the Uruguayan’s return would dent his the former Chelsea player’s prospects, Brendan Rodgers’ decision to move to 3-5-2 has bolstered Sturridge’s appeal – with Suarez alongside him, he has produced 23 points in two games compared to 31 in five games without him. Given that Liverpool have scored six games in two games since Suarez’ reinstallation, in comparison to five strikes in the opening five, it seems unlikely Rodgers will change his new system, allowing Sturridge to continue his recent form ahead of games against Newcastle, West Brom and Fulham in the next four.

Van Persie Reveals Toe Concern

The United forward has admitted that he went against doctors advice to play in last weekend’s trip to Sunderland. Van Persie had to undertake injections in order to feature against the Black Cats but revealed he’s unlikely to risk his fitness in such a way again:

“Against Shakhtar I got such a hard kick on my toe, I immediately thought it was broken. It was so sore. On the Thursday, after returning to Manchester, I had a scan. Eight years ago I broke a bone on my other foot and it felt like a similar injury. I was so relieved there was no fracture visible, but doctors told me it was badly bruised. I was told to rest it, but I wanted to play against Sunderland. So we did what they call a quick fix. The medics gave me an injection. But I have said I won’t do that again. If I keep having injections in my toe, it is not going to improve. It will get more sensitive and painful. I have to admit it was a gamble playing against Hungary. I’d not trained and you never know how that can work out when you play again.”

The Scout Says: Having scored a hat-trick in Friday’s win over Hungary, the Dutchman showed little of the lethargy that seems to have affected his domestic displays in recent weeks. With his confidence flowing once again after becoming his nation’s all-time top scorer, Van Persie’s owners will be desperate for more of the same as United prepare for a run which hands them three home matches and trips to Fulham and Cardiff in the following five Gameweeks. The news also dispels any fears that David Moyes would be somewhat cautious with Van Persie’s game time due to United’s busy schedule – the Dutchman had failed to play 90 minutes since Gameweek 3 prior to the trip to Wearside but in spite of the toe concern, was fielded for the full game as Moyes looked to recover from back-to-back league defeats.

Cole Remains Sidelined with Rib Complaint

The FA have confirmed Ashley Cole has been ruled out of England’s match with Poland tomorrow with an ongoing rib problem.

The Scout Says: Subbed off against Norwich last time out as Jose Mourinho shifted to a three-man backline, Cole had looked a decent differential option as the Blues prepare for a run of eight games against the current bottom 10 over the next 11 fixtures. He currently sits in just 5% of FPL teams compared to Branislav Ivanovic’s 30%, despite the fact he has returned the same number of points (31) as th Serbian so far but having missed both the recent World Cup qualifiers, the left-back now looks a doubt heading into Chelsea’s home clash with Cardiff on Saturday.

Petric Hoping for Hammers Start

West Ham’s free signing is pushing for a starting role after stepping up his fitness over the last few days. The Croatian found the net in a recent behind-closed-doors match against Charlton and spoke of his determination to nail down a regular role:

“I played 90 minutes after a long time which was very good for me and of course I’m glad to score a goal, but it’s only a friendly, so it doesn’t count for too much. I feel better and better each day and I don’t think it’s long before I will feel 100 per cent fit.I hope to be involved (against Manchester City) but it’s the manager who decides and we will see.”

The Scout Says: With Andy Carroll still stuck in the treatment room with a heel injury, Modibo Maiga has failed to take advantage of a recent run of games. The latter started each of the first six Gameweeks but, after failing to find the net, was replaced by Ricardo Vaz Te for the trip to Spurs last time out as Allardyce opted for a formation which looked more like a 4-6-0. Given the success of their trip to the Lane, with Va Te amongst the scorers in a 3-0 win, it remains to be seen whether the Hammers boss will alter his approach as City pay visit next weekend – Vaz Te could well retain his starting berth, forcing Petric to warm the bench once more.

      Don't get on the mods' black list. I don't know who I've upset, but I haven't had a hot topic yet though I thought some of my posts might have been worthy of consideration. So if you've had some then you must be one of the favoured few and will probably get more.

        There is no "mod black list" 🙂 and in the rare case users upset a mod, it doesn't mean that all mods suddenly has personal vendettas against them. Most users on here just go about their business, and might get a hot topic if the post is good and catches the attention of one of the mods.

        So relax your shoulders 🙂

      Collins to Ivanovic and play Ivan over Lampard imo. Some will call me crazy, but I think this is a good move to get rid of your deadwood defender and get in another attacking force with great fixtures from now.

      In case you didn't see this from your previous post:

      "I personally worry about Lampard's game time risk (those 1 pointers from earlier in the season were really annoying). I don't think any Chelsea midfielder is nailed on but I think Oscar has a higher upside. Mata could be considered as a potential differential (monitor this week)

      I would monitor Siggy this week (i.e. see if he starts against Villa). Going forward you may wish to consider Walcott as a potential midfield upgrade although you may be averse to "doubling-up" on Arsenal midfield.

      If you are happy to keep Lamps then I would save your free transfer."

    *REPOST*

    Since it is quite slow....

    If you could choose to "remove" a position from your team and assign it to a new position what would you choose (can't choose goalies)

    For example, only have 4 defenders but have 6 midfielders

    I think this season I'd remove a Midfielder and go with 4 Forwards

    It seems like an easy choice to just take a defender out and put in a forward but what if you were still limited in the formation you could play? (E.g couldn't play 6 defenders or 6 midfielders or 4 forwards)

      so you could choose 4 forwards and go with Suarez, Benteke, Rooney, Giroud but then you'd have to bench one every week - would it still be worth it?

        That changes things really. I'd probably add one defender and take away a midfielder so I can have the cheap defender for a bit of extra money.

    Migs (Davis)

    Ozil-Michu-Oscar-Brady-Colback
    Rooney-Suarez-Studge

    Defense is in all sorts of a mess. Wanted to bring in Clyne but don't see much point with their trip to OT this week. Maybe save FT for next week and do Ozil & Collins -> Wally & ?.

        Like the idea of the Swans defender. Any idea how long Chester is out for? Is Collins a non-starter now for sure? If I knew for def that Collins wouldn't start I would do Chester->Burner

          I have no idea on the Chester injury, but I would imagine he'd be back at least less than a month. I'm not sure on Collins, but I think he should be 3rd choice, and they seem to have done better without him, so I'd say he would probably be out.

        That's a plan I'm close to putting in motion 🙂
        Although I have Ivan instead of Terry ATM.

        In fact, if nothing else pops up during this and next week, I'll most likely bring in Baines and Walcott for Vidic and Ozil, as I'm quite pleased with the rest of my team. Which would give me a defence of:

        Baines Walker Ivan (Clyne, Faye)

        Good point. Suàrez may still be a differential. Sturridge hardly is, since almost everybody seems to have him. On the other hand, not to have a high scoring player your opponents have may backfire. Differential should perhaps be searched not on price of high scoring "essentials". but here there really is no optimal choice. To me it is this: Giroud, Lukaku, Stu and Suàrez are all must. Benteke probably soon too. Can have only 3 of them. Two Liverpool forwards is over coverage in the long run, so better to cut one of those off and have two of Benteke, Lukaku, Giroud.

            I wouldn't jump on Walcott-wagon immediately, would wait to see him play first. Of course, you might be tempted to make Giroud -> Benteke soon for better fixtures, and some guaranteed Arsenal coverage is still needed. So I see your point.

      The basic set up, for me, is this:

      Suàrez has better stats in their matches together this season. He clearly plays higher right now, and is generally the more productive and involved one, the player who runs Liverpools attack and will always get to points just because everything passes through him. I think this is strong argument for Suàrez.

      However, when Coutinho returns, there is a fair chance that Suàrez moves to the flank, unless Rodgers continues with 3-4-1-2. Suàrez would still probably get to points a lot, but he would get less goals than Sturridge. Sturridge has massive goals/matches ratio since joining Pool, and is certain to continue as a central striker. Goals weigh only one point more than assists for a striker, but they give 8 bps, which may materialize as 3 bonus points, which would mean 4 point difference. And that matters.

      You probably have other arguments to add.

      Price question: Suàrez is about 1M more expensive than Stu. Is he worth the difference if we can afford it? Can we? In the current situation where cheap defenders and midfielders outscore the expensive ones, I think we can. So that makes this less of a question. But what do you think?

        I've currently got both with a view to ditching one in a couple of games when I can work out which is better.

        Shots off target and mazy runs that sometimes come to nothing and are intercepted are a negative bonus wise though against Suarez. His all round fitness and involvement though on top of goals are however a major strength.

        I continue to monitor the situation but currently anticipate Suarez to emerge as the better option.

          True that. The other side of the coin is that those shots off target and mazy runs are results of his heavy involvement in Pool attack that tends to make him to get to points almost all the time.

      Same position:

      In my opinion Suarez is the better long term option (always a goal threat and has assists).

      Sturridge has been clinical this season but his number of shots per game is actually not that high. He will blank more often in my opinion.

      I think Suarez discipline/Sturridge injury woes probably offset each other over a season.

      For the time being they are both staying in my team and I will judge after the next couple of game weeks.

        Do you have shots-inside-the-box stats for both? That's a crucial one. I can check it myself, but only later.

        Who do you have with them? for me, this week might be the right one to make the choice, because I don't have Luka and he is likely to be one mean host to Hull.

        ...on the other hand, we might see surprisingly bad return from all 3 after week's internationals. I think all of them will play.

          I don't I'm afraid - total shots per game were as follows though:

          Suarez - 4.5 (limited sample size obviously)
          Sturridge - 3.1

          I have Giroud at the moment. What about you?

          Getting Lukaku is the challenge for me as well. Hull do have an okay defence and I don't think it would be disastrous to buy next week if one of SAS doesn't perform...

      I'm in exactly the same position and after much thought I've decided to stick for now.

      It's all about getting maximum points from your free transfers. Both Studge and Suarez are likely to score very similar points to the alternatives over the next few weeks. I think I can get more points from transfers that deal with my other issues (like having Collins, Arnie, Ramsey and no Chelsea).

          Hah, just opened up that question below. I don't actually feel qualified to talk about Ramsey with any certainty. The argument I've started believing is that his goals have been down to two factors that won't continue: luck and injuries.

          His goals will dry up and it might be time to drop. The ManU kid looks very exciting, as good a punt as we've seen since ... well, all the other cheap goalscoring mids 🙂 Personally, I'll be waiting to see if he can do his thing against teams better than Sunderland.

          If you can afford it, Swansea's Hernandez could be a good shout with their fixtures.

            Sunderland is fair point. Been thinking the same: Januzaj has shone against WBA at home and Sunderland away. Not the best of defences. Still, I think it's a fair guess that ManU is going to score some goals, and it seems that he is going to be more involved in them than any other ManU midfielder. So, with that price, worth a punt. I think he might be.

            From Swansea, I've already made my mind, it will be Michu.

      In the 3-4-1-2, i'd choose Suarez due to him being the better player, on set pieces and never getting injured. Though if i had Sturridge already, i wouldn't actively be looking to upgrade.

      If the system changed to 4 at the back, it would be Sturridge as he'd be the central striker.

          That's true. It's a tough one. Probably a good idea to have both whilst they are doing this well. Need to see the impact on GJ and Coutinho' returning to have a better picture. So maybe one should wait it out with whoever they have now and reassess later. They're both doing well, so perhaps no need to make a decision on it yet and just go with the flow for as long as Liverpool's fixtures are still good.

            But can we wait on Lukaku with these fixtures? I mean, if he scores a brace, never mind a hat trick, against Hull, we are mad if we still have both Stu and Goofy, because they are not both going to score a hat trick. They are not going to score a brace à piece either. What they may do, and I think will often do, is to score a combined brace or hat trick. And that's probably why we have them: to have almost guaranteed goal or two or three. But is that too much of an insurance, when we have Lukaku with better fixtures and also in top form?

            This dilemma is giving me a major headache.

      Differential seeking has to be the name of the game as most of us languish down the rankings.

      Moses = 4.1% ownership
      Suarez = 17.6%
      Sturridge = 39.1%

      I know there are risks in ognoring Sturridge but there are big gains to be had too.

      I've said it before, I feel studge is the safe pick. He could get goals and/or assist threat as well.
      Yes he is "injury prone" but the other is a "trouble magnet". Having Suarez is a bit always on the extreme side he could score a hat trick in a game or he could be easily irritated by the defense of the opposition and do unnecessary things. That is why i’m leaning to Sturridge as he looks to be the BAPS magnet than Suarez as shown on the CPL game. Plus side on having studge is he's cheaper & tame.

      I have both, and I'm an advocate of doing so.

      Sturridge - He has scored 16 goals in 21 appearances for Liverpool. This equates to 3 goals every 4 games. This isn't a flash in the pan! That suggests to me that he is a must-have. He absolutely relies on good service, but he has been getting it despite the absence of Liverpool's best assister - Coutinho.

      Suarez - He has scored 26 goals in his last 35 appearances for Liverpool, stretching back to the beginning of last season. This also equates to 3 goals every 4 games, and over an even longer period of time. I don't need to talk about how good Suarez is or that he is easily the best player at LFC, and probably the entire league. He even has assists in his bag... a must-have.

      To put this in perspective, RVP has 29 in his last 44 apps for Man Utd. This is almost exactly 2 in 3, so not as good as either Suarez or Sturridge and about $3m more.

      If you want coverage by having only one of them and getting Benteke or Lukaku, that's up to you.

      Hope that helps...

    Could avoiding Ramsey and Barkley provide an advantage later in the season?

    I've been thinking, FPL players are dreamers, always looking for that next big score. This being the case not having bark and rams could provide an advantage.

    People are opposed to losing half of a profit which is what would have to be done if either get crocked, so if there are a few "couple week" injuries or consistent loss of form is late adopters (or non adopters) can transfer and move on.

    Obviously this is slightly sour grapes but it's something I'm holding on to, as I WC and don't bring in either.

    Not exactly new ground I'm covering here but can I talk Ramsey?

    I've swallowed the line that his recent glut has been partly down to a very specific set of injuries creating a team setup that has helped him to get forward (plus obviously some luck with his conversion rate). That's going to change imminently with Podolski, Cazorla and Arteta all coming back.

    Is this true or false?

      There's also the scenario, in which he keeps his form and Wenger is as conservative as he tends, you know, he is one of those who really believe in "if it ain't broken, don't try to fix it", to the extent that sometimes it can already be broken and he still ain't fixing it. In this scenario, Ramsey continues to play out of position and to get great scoring chances and converting sufficiently many of them.

      But at some point, yes, I think with Pod, Santi and Wally back, Ramsey must drop back to lower midfield.

      Same dilemma above. Think I'd take out Rooney just because I'm not convinced by United yet and Lukaku has proved he can score against anybody.

      You might have the rare case in which I would ship Giroud off. Either him or Rooney. I wouldn't sweat on having ManU coverage now. I wildcarded all my ManU players out and have been perfectly happy with that.

        Thats the odd thing I was thinking of.

        I had Giroud from GW 1 so have good value on him but not happy with his returns in last couple of weeks.

        It has also blocked me from getting Ramsey as I have Merte and Ozil also.

        I am also looking for rid of Ericksen so get rid of Giroud and get Ramsey in otherwise

        Rooney out and Yaya in for Ericksen

          Do not worry about Giroud's and Ramsey's recent returns. Ramsey is unlikely to keep on scoring with that frequency, whereas Giroud is gonna give you a reliable source of points.

                  Needless to say, this also goes for other unfortunate events, like if Giroud's goal drought continues. 😀

                  But honestly, I think Giroud is almost must have. Did you see his first goal against Australia, btw? A couple more goals against finland, again subbed off on the half and coming back fit and in good moods and we're more than happy to line him up against Norwich and even captain him.

            So, you have Barkley, Luka & Coleman/Baines. Then you have probably Özil and/or Ramsey, but no Arsenal defence. Instead, you have some ManU defence (Vidic), but no ManU attack or midfield. You also have Migs, Stu and Suàrez.

    Over the last week I've seen many posts of people transferring Rooney > Lukaku. I've read all the reasons of how Lukaku is more explosive etc but it seems crazy to me to transfer out Rooney when Utd's run of fixtures looks so promising.

    In the same regard there are many who have finally ditched RVP but with his hatrick for the Netherlands and again a good run of fixtures its seems mad to get rid now having held onto him for so long.

    Basically my point is that form strikers like Giroud and Sturridge will find it more difficult to pick up points when the fixtures get harder so keeping Rooney and transferring a different striker for Lukaku would produce better results. To illustrate my point I decided to look at the fixtures from now till the end of 2013 (GW8 - 19) for the big hitting strikers RVP, Rooney, Lukaku, Suarez, Sturridge, Giroud, and Benteke. I have then looked back at these same fixtures for last season to see how these strikers performed.

    The numbers below represent an average points per game (90 minutes) attained by each player over the same fixtures last season. I have then given their current form based on the first 7 games of this season, and lastly a combined average to give some indication of potential form over GW8 - 19.

    RVP: last season = 7.2 this season = 4.6 combined = 5.9

    Rooney: last season = 6.1 this season = 6.2 combined = 6.2

    Lukaku: last season = 6.8 this season = 10.6 combined = 8.7

    Suarez: last season = 5.2 this season = 9.5 combined = 7.3

    Sturridge: last season = 8.6 this season = 7.7 combined = 8.1

    Giroud: last season = 7.2 this season = 6.7 combined = 6.9

    Benteke: last season = 7.8 this season = 6.7 combined = 7.3

    What these numbers show is that I'm completely wrong! RVP and Rooney have the lowest combined scores whilst a combination of Lukaku, Sturridge and Benteke is likely to produce the best results.

    With Lukaku and Sturridge both playing for different teams for at least part of last season this will effect the numbers, but their both now in better teams so its likely to increase the combined score anyway. I also know that teams change from year to year (thinking Southamptons defensive revolution) which could skew the numbers but its also true that most teams have similar defenses and keepers as last season. Strikers invariably prefer playing against certain teams and players as their style and general skill suits their particular weaknesses generating better results.

          It's assumed that playing in 'better' teams will improve their scores and that strikers prefer playing against certain teams and the main assumption is that if a player scored against X last season then he should do this season too.

      Interesting. Your calculation also adds an argument to Sturridge-Suàrez -debate, namely that last season Stu was much better than Suàrez against the opponents they are going to face during next 11 rounds.

        If it helps minutes played for these fixtures last season were:

        RVP = 900
        Roo = 634
        Luka = 459
        Suar = 810
        Studge = 385
        Giro = 525
        Tekkers = 564

        Although this is effected my suspension/injury etc.

        Both Liverpool and Utd seem to be favoring 2 upfront plus the other are main strikers in their team so would expect these players to play most games.

          Lukaku is the one that has some doubt over his game time. Extrapolating scores from lesser minutes to 90/game is fraught with danger though.

          This should be elaborated still a bit. We can assume that all these players are likely to get as many minutes as possible - only if they are to be rested or if they are injured or suspended they will not play.

          However, if they didn't get full matches last season, they might have a lower points/90 minutes ratio for that. Just because the players are more likely to score multiple goals&assists when they get one match of 90 minutes than when they play 30 minutes in three matches. I mostly think here of Lukaku and Giroud, who might have played smaller amounts. Meanwhile, Sturridge probably has played very few matches and would like to know which of the forthcoming 11 fixtures he had last season.

      7.5/10

      Davies is crocked and may in any case rotate with Taylor
      Whittingham isn't good enough for his fixtures and El Ahmadi isn't good enough to rotate with him
      It's boring but you really ought to have Lukaku. Giroud has been quite poor recently

          Different team. For Arsenal in the last two weeks he's only just in the top 20 for shots on goal, which is a huge decline from the start of the season.

          I'm not saying he's a bad player forever now, it's perfectly possible that he'll spring back to form. But very recently he has been totally out of form for Arsenal against so-so opposition.

            As soon as Tekkers is back the sensible move would be to ship Giroud out

            I agree, basically there are certain players like Giroud/Dzeko etc who can be sporadically good due to the teams they play for and the fact that they are big front men and the focal point of attack but basically they just don't have enough ability (they are donkeys) to consistently turn it on, in my opinion of course.

      No, I'm no captaining Lukaku but I hope he runs riot. Hull are good defensively so I imagine that wont happen but he's a beast so you never know.

        Hull is missing a plenty of defenders, aren't they?

      I made the Lambert -> Lukaku trade so even if he doesn't score, it won't be any worse than having Rickie.

      I'm trying to decide whether to effectively quadruple-up on Everton by captaining Lukaku.

      Predicting cricket-scores against promoted teams is the most predictable failure in FPL.

        Yeah you're either going to get 12 points or 90 for that gw. Big risk

      Januzay will prob score 2 or 3 points this week. Having said that I'm starting him over Eriksen as I'm sure he'll be true to type and bring in another 2.

      I would go for Eriksen because he will 100% start and is on set pieces.
