World Cup 2014

World Cup 2014 – Team Analysis – Germany

Our World Cup coverage moves onto Group G now as we turn our attentions to Germany. Joachim Low’s side kick off their campaign with a very testing clash against Portugal on Monday June 16 at 5pm before facing a couple of opponents that will surely earn them significant Fantasy investment – a clash with Ghana five days later at 5pm precedes their final group game against USA on Thursday June 26 at 5pm:

Road to Qualification

Germany coasted to qualification by topping a group that also included Sweden, Austria, Republic of Ireland, Kazakhstan and Faroe Islands. Winning nine and drawing one of their 10 fixtures, Low’s side caught the eye going forward and scored 36 times – netting at least three times on nine occasions – but failed to impress defensively. Ten goals conceded and a mere four clean sheets doesn’t instil much confidence, with Sweden, in particular, proving difficult opponents, scoring four and three times over their head-to-heads.

Most Appearances Manuel Neuer, Mesut Ozil, Thomas Muller (10), Philipp Lahm (9), Per Mertesacker, Sami Khedira (8), Jerome Boateng (7), Marco Reus, Miroslav Klose, Marcel Schmelzer, Toni Kroos (6)

Most Goals Mesut Ozil (8), Marco Reus (5), Mario Gotze, Miroslav Klose, Thomas Muller, Andre Schurrle (4)

Most Assists Mesut Ozil, Thomas Muller (4), Philipp Lahm, Marco Reus (3)

The Key Targets

After impressing in the final third during qualifying, Lahm’s side have surprisingly struggled in recent friendlies. A 1-1 draw with Italy preceded back-to-back 1-0 wins over England and Chile before an experimental Germany XI registered a goalless home draw with Poland in the middle of last month. Sunday evening’s 2-2 draw against Cameroon once again underlined their defensive frailties ahead of the tournament.

Despite a move to central midfield for club Bayern Munich, Philipp Lahm will be fielded as a right-back in Low’s familiar 4-2-3-1 set-up. His raids down the flank and delivery from out wide provided a trio of assists during qualifying and will bring Lahm, who is available for 6.4 in FantasyiTeam, onto many radars. Arsenal’s Per Mertesacker and Bayern’s Jerome Boateng are Low’s preferred central defensive partnership – the Gunners defender scored twice during qualifying and also notched the winner against England and comes in at 5.9 in FantasyiTeam to Boateng’s 5.8. At left-back, Erik Durm looks set to get the nod after Borussia Dortmund team-mate Marcel Schmelzer was eliminated from the final 23-man squad on Monday – priced at just 5.4 in FantasyiTeam, he’s the most budget friendly of Lahm’s likely defensive starters.

In central midfield, both Bastian Schweinsteiger and Sami Khedira have been hampered by injuries over the last few months. The latter has only just recovered from months on the sidelines with a knee problem and, whilst he was preferred to Toni Kroos when fully fit, there are surely question marks over his match sharpness right now – Kroos was more productive over the qualifiers, serving up three goals and a pair of assists and, like Schweinsteiger, comes in at 6.4 in FantasyiTeam.

Further up the field, Low’s selection policy over the group stages suggests that only Mesut Ozil and Thomas Muller are guaranteed starters in the four attacking slots. The Arsenal man is also first-choice spot-kick taker and played a part in 12 of his nation’s goals over the qualifiers, courtesy of eight strikes and four assists, whilst Muller mirrored Ozil’s creative endeavours from his role on the right in addition to scoring four times and is slightly more expensive in FantasyiTeam, at 7.5 to 7.4.

The Long Shots

With numerous options for the left wing and lone forward role, Low’s starting line-up is difficult to predict. It seems likely that Mario Gotze, Marco Reus and Andre Schurrle will compete for the role out wide, with Julian Draxler perhaps restricted to sub duties, though the aforementioned trio, along with Miroslav Klose, are all capable of being handed the central striking role, too.

Reus started more qualifiers than any of his rivals and subsequently comes in at 7.6 in FantasyiTeam, though Gotze – available for only 6.5 in FantasyiTeam – has been named in the first XI in four of the last five friendlies and seems to have the edge in the pecking order. Both players started against Cameroon last week, with Reus out wide and Gotze handed the chance to lead the line.

Schurrle, along with Klose, is classified as a forward in FantasyiTeam and is the cheaper of the pair at 8.0 to 8.4 – the Chelsea man started the last two qualifiers and notched four times, though has since featured in the XI in one of the last five friendlies, though climbed off the bench to notch against Cameroon last week.

Are many people going with German attacking players at the start of the WC? Tricky fixtures and uncertainty over personnel is putting me off but they've got some great players in those positions.

I'd discounted him on the grounds of his late season form for Arsenal (and general lack of goals in the PL). I didn't realise until this article that he was Germany's top scorer by a distance.

Smart choice. A slightly slower game, due to the conditions, might favour the Ozil of old as oppose to "Premier Ozil"..good punt.

          Hey lads!

playing a different World Cup game than you are playing, but mainly the difference between it and FPL for instance, is just that players gets 3 POINTS EXTRA for WINNING a game.

So, would appreciate it very much if you rated my team, or see anyone I should get rid of immedietaley, (remember that the players might have different values than in the game you're playing)
+ we have 3 transfers for each round in the group stages
Got 100 M to spread out on the team

          Casillas(5.5)
          Alba(5.0) ¤ David Luiz(5.5) ¤ Debuchy(4.5)
          Vidal(9.0) ¤ Hazard(9.0) ¤ James Rodríguez(7.5) ¤ Oscar(8.0)
          Ronaldo(11.0) ¤ Neymar(C)(9.5) ¤ Messi(11.0)
          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
          Bench: Patricio(4.0) - Alderweireld(4.0) - Janmaat(3.5) - Random 3M midfielder, aint' gonna play(3.0

So to sum up, do you see any big flaws or failed tactics when you take the "special" rules into calculation?

I don't think Portugal will do well at all, making Ronaldo far too expensive IMO.

And Vidal hasn't played since he had knee surgery a month ago, which is why I've decided to do without him. Maybe try to get Di Maria instead? Such a lovely group for the Argies.

I'd consider getting the Nigerian keeper (Enyeama) for save points.

              Wow, great reply, thanks 🙂

Regarding Portugal, I might be a bit biased cause Portugal is my favorite team. So I'll look into Ronaldo.
Any suggestions for another striker to get instead?

Vidal might be scary to have too, so if you think Portugal is going to go "bad", I might just go with Muller/Ozil from the start. Or Di Maria as you say.

Forgot to mention there are no save points in the game I'm playing.

No worries (almost certainly all nonsense though, so get your pinch of salt at the ready)

For strikers, I'd think about RVP, Higuain/Aguero or Fred. Lots of people think Dzeko could be in with a shout for the golden boot, though I can't see it myself.

"I received such notification by e-mail with no representative from the club meeting with me at any point to discuss this matter. After six-and-a-half years of loyalty and hard work, and the last few years as captain, I am disappointed beyond words about this course of action."

Same as Telegraph one, they have only one Cameroon defender at the moment, I assume now the final squads have been announced they'll be pricing them up and adding them.

They're really terrible with player lists usually (even for the PL) so you're just gonna have to be patient and hope that they update them. It's a really poor site in general.

because they can't be bothered to read all the squads, they assume their players will only be interested in players that have played in the prem + the likes of Neymar & Messi, and they are probably right.

It does leave some bargains in there tho, like Blind at 1.5m and de Sciglio at 2.0m

Bale should be in there. He went for a world record fee last summer and has further proved himself since. Easily worth more on the transfer market than Fabregas, Iniesta or Gotze. So, this is nonsense!

This might go down badly with some on here, but does anyone else think that Europe should have more spots in the WC?

I can't help feel that the group stages would be more competitive if say Sweden, Serbia and Poland were in instead of Iran, Australia and Costa Rica.

Just a couple more, or even more African teams rather than Asian/North American.

I just think we should be as close to the best 32 teams as possible.

I'd rather watch a game like Portugal-Sweden than watch Brazil decimate a far inferior side.

It's a similar argument to the view that Luxembourg, Liechtenstein etc should have to pre qualify for the Euro and World Cup qualifying stages so only the best 1 or 2 minnows enter the race with the big boys. The downside of excluding them is football interest within these other countries is more limited due to the constant exclusion. I do agree though that there are some quality sides not in the WC which is weird and frankly inequitable.

If they did with the minnows, then there'd be less games in qualifying and more gaps for international friendlies that were taken seriously by all, and could work into a world rank/co-efficient system to allocate continents places.

PS. None of this will ever happen unless I become head of FIFA!

I was thinking that yesterday, I think the days of giving spaces to other areas to support development are past. Now good teams miss out to give places to teams with far easier qualifying routes.
Can see a time when 2 or 3 of the bigger european teams miss out and thn there will be an issue.

I remember a time when european teams played teams like Australia in a play off, what happened with that

No, it's great as it is. Each continent has strong spells and weak spells, what if lots of great African or Central American players come through and all of their spots have been taken by European teams?

And how do you judge this? It's easy when teams are playing in leagues and cups for a whole season but not when international teams have friendlies in between important domestic games?

                              That's the tough bit.

If they re-jigged the world ranking system so it meant something and worked well, and had proper gaps for international friendlies, then maybe they would be more competitive.

Yes, they should by rights. I think that South America gets too many spots. Their number of spots is basically due to the World Cup performances of Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay, so why should all the other mediocre teams benefit just because they happen to be on the same land mass?

If they used Lanley's point above on the minnows, they could reduce the length of European qualifications for the WC and allow time for these playoffs.

In fact, just drop the number of teams going straight through from SA, NA and Asia, and allow a few European and African teams to play playoffs against them. That should fix it.

Europe AND Africa should have more. Asia, North America and even South America should be reduced. Especially north America.

Asia and NA because of lack of quality, and latter also because there are relatively few countries competing, so USA and Mexico virtually cannot not make it. Mexico lost more matches than it won (won only 2) in last round of NA qualifiers, and its still went through. For this latter reason also South America. This year 6 out of 10 South American countries went in. Uruguay only won 7 out of 16 matches, losing 5, and still went through. With such rates, the likes of Argentina and Brazil will make it there even in their worst year.

Agree about the rest, but not on South America.

All of the 6 sides deserve to be in the WC imo, maybe merge their qualifying with North/Central America?

That could be a good idea.

i also think that these all are strong sides, but the problem is that they virtually cannot drop out of the World Cup. There are strong sides left out of the World Cup each time, strong European and African sides, that is. And they have to play under threat of elimination, every time - you saw likes of France and Portugal playing playoffs this time, and previous times big countries have been eliminated. This is only a good thing: every team should have a realistic chance not to make it.

In fact, I think the balance is about correct in Europe: the big countries will make it most of time, surprises happen, and every team (bar Germany) can plausibly be eliminated though some (i.e. Germany and Italy) never have been. But everywhere else this balance is completely fecked up. Maybe just dropping the number of participants back to 24 would do good to the tournament.

Valid points there, I think merging the Americas qualifying would provide that competition for slots for SA teams.

Bare in mind though, that had Brazil not been hosts, Uruguay almost certainly wouldn't have qualified so there is still some jeopardy for these sides.

The African qualifying baffles me, quite why Senegal had to play off against the Ivory Coast, I'm not sure, anyways I'd like to see another African team in there.

I'd be against reducing the numbers though, I think the current number is a good one.

Yeah, and maybe South and North America could be divided to groups - like Europe is - and only winners go straight through and second placed will play playoffs. That way fecking up a match or two would actually directly cost them the place. The likes of Mexico, Argentina and Uruguay could no longer make that many mistakes and still get through. They would have to be sharp in (almost) every match, like the Europeans and especially Africans have to.

I think Europe should have fewer spots. I would also be totally against any CL like co-efficient.

The world cup shouldn't just be a closed shop for the richest, most developed countries. The CL has already been ruined by these sentiments.

Countries improve over years, they need to be given the chance to improve tho

Countries won't improve without economic development, they need much better footballing infrastructure to compete.

Getting hammered in a WC every 4 years isn't going to improve them.

well generally teams aren't getting hammered every 4 years anyway. New Zealand for example played in their first WC for ages and went unbeaten almost getting out of the group.

Probably when you say you want fewer teams from other confederations you refer to the likes of Costa Rica, Ecuador, South Korea etc.. They all have decent records in world cups. What benefit would adding Poland or Denmark have? You have to draw the line somewhere

True, I wouldn't want to get rid of them totally, just reduce the numbers by a couple, or have a playoff system like discussed above.

well European countries and their football teams are pretty much at full developed stage, football wise because they have had all the advantages over the years (especially when that British clown was in charge of FIFA in the 70's trying to stop African teams getting in). Other countries are still catching up. They could even overtake European teams in the future.

A continent of 500m people should not have the majority participation in a global tournament, whichever way you look at it.

agreed, if people with this mentality had their way the african nations would never have developed, it was because of the world cup. up until 86' no african side had got past the group stage, 30 yrs on people are calling for more african spots.

                          give them a chance.

Best pick in the France defense? (regardless of value)

Generally IMO Debuchy is quite attacking, but he's card prone isn't he?

Evra is solid pick, but he's getting older and older.

Which ones who will start at the two CB is unsure atm. But it surely is two out of these three:
                      Sakho, Varane, Koscielny
IMO Sakho and Koscielny are better at corners (scoring goals).

                      Thoughts guys? 🙂

Without knowing who will start CB, I'd go with Debuchy.

It's hard to tell which 2 will start, Sakho and Varane played in the crucial qualifier but Koscielny was injured so nobodies really sure.

Sagna did not impress at all in the last friendly game.

I'd expect Debuchy to play the easy games in which he can attack and Sagna the more difficult ones as he is better at defending.

Liverpool have (finally) put in a €12m written bid for Emre Can of Bayer Leverkusen.

The player has already agreed personal terms with Liverpool and a deal looks close to completion as there is a €12m release clause in Can's contract.

No, the clause in Can's Leverkusen contract when he signed from Bayern means that he can only move outside the Bundesliga for the fixed price.

This is a pity because I'd been looking forward to Can playing alongside Xhaka in Mönchengladbach, just because of the inevitable musical earworm: "Xhaka Can! Xhaka Can!"

                          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XV5_WagxZg

Still, "A-A-A-gger Can, A-A-A-A-A-gger Can!" at Liverpool will have to suffice.

What do you think of him PBJ? I'm not too convinced by him to be honest and I don't think he'll be such a significant upgrade over others in the squad.

Yes, there's potential there, but Can's not substantially better than what Liverpool have got in terms of his skill set.

I rate his tactical awareness though, and Can can also fill in at full-back if needed.
