Versus – Low to Mid-Price Midfielders

With the season now just a fortnight away, we turn our attentions to a number of kindly priced midfielders in our latest article for members. Picking the right combinations in the mid-price bracket looks crucial to a strong start and with Fantasy managers debating the merits of a number of targets, we scour the statistics to assess their previous form.

For the purpose of this article, we’ve selected seven midfielders, no more than 6.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, who have proven popular picks so far and/or are set for some favourable opening fixtures – potentially affording them the chance to hand us an early-season bandwagon. Comparing their respective statistics, we also dig deeper into seasons gone by in our attempt to ascertain the best options for our initial lineups.

        i've been good. just been trying to rest and relax this summer (when i'm not working)
        yeah just finished up my first year of college in June - last final was the day before the WC started, great timing huh? :D. overall it went pretty well

            yupp. just getting the pay and the experience is what matters most

            pretty good. at this point hopefully waiting for some more information as to who's nailed on, also waiting on any other transfers. would be nice to see what's gunna happen to Bony and Remy. haven't really touched my team in several days as i'm just waiting now

              also trying to free up 1m for eriksen > mata but haven't been able to decide where to get it from yet

              and completely unsure which two gks to get. really struggling there. and only wanna spend 9m on gks

                the Gk issue has been the biggest of all till now honestly.
                dont wanna go ddg and cheapo.
                thats what made my previous season a bad one.(Mignolet)

              hardly any convincing draft till now. only nailed on picks till now is Rooney nd Evans.
              So many options in midfield and a less in upfront is pinching me for a good 5 man mid

        I am also doing so, but spending a extra mil to upgrade a Wisdom to McAuley, Olsson or Lescott to guarantee gametime. I am however intressted if anyone have found something similar with other teams? Switching west brom to Palace for example could be a big improvment.

          Not looked at it but try palace, QPR, Stoke, Swansea and hull. All may have 4.5 options, don't know how it falls though. Will look later.

              First 9 are decent, bar GW8. Could take the hit for that week.

              Didn't look further as my little fixture picture stopped 🙂

              The issue does come with finding 4.5 nailed on players though.

              Stoke and palace are a tricky place to find marriappa and Cameron have their own question marks on them.

                Nice, going to look at all the first 20 fixtures from teams that have available 4,5 mil options and compile it into a excel find and see if I get any decent results. 🙂

      People tend to look at the fixtures and go 'Oh thats nice' forgetting that their cheap defenders come from poor teams who are unlikely to keep a clean sheet against even the weakest opposition.

      There are plenty of variations on that theme.
      I have Foster/Krul in goal and am not keen on doubling up. So I've been looking at QPR, SOT, STO, CPL, HUL. It all depends on whetber there are reliable 4.5m options at all of them, and Hull's fixtures go south after gw5 or so, but otherwise it should work. Fitting Swansea in there may also work.

        Chambers was very short term, he will probably start against Palace.

        Was looking at 1 or 2 of Bojan, Gayle, Berahino with an expensive midfield.

        Seem to remember Lescott used to score quite a few in his Everton days.

          You say one or two of those and name cheap strikers

          Please don't have two heaps strikers as that's a folly move.

          One is fine, potentially even necessary, but 2 is silly when offense is where the most points come.

          Bojan, Roons/studge and dzeko/Giroud would be a decent and moderately budget friendly front line.

          There usually arent at the start of the season, only in the case of an English team being in the UEFA Super cup. They will pop up over new years at some time, with rescheduling due to bad weather, or FA cup replays

          I don't like to say drop this player with that one because we all have varied opinions on individual players etc and I don't want to make your team like mine with a perfect 10 ;).
          Anti template but I would be scared without city and pool but coverage is marmite you either believe in it/love it or not.

            True. No Pool (other than Hendo) doesn't bother me too much given the fixtures and the Suarez factor. No City is worrying but can't see any safe/standout options. Dzeko would be my preference but no guarentees with him.

    168 points in 2600 minutes for lukaku last season is pretty impressive. dunno how i managed to dodge all those points and get just 2 pointers from him though 😆 .. trolled me in the world cup too. opening 5 fixtures not bad with the tough ones all at home and leicester and wba away. reckon he's worth taking a punt on again?

      If you look at the other mid price strikers, only Dzeko can match him for scoring potential to begin with. Giroud may be lacking fitness, Bony is good but faces a tough GW1 and is an easy downgrade.

    I am considering dropping De Jong and getting both Eriksen and Lamela. Also thinking about Siggy in for Shelvey assuming I can still afford it, a want a Swansea midfielder to rotate with Cameron. I will change any player who is not starting consistently.
    I would also like B.Davies and Shaw in defence but can't see how to work them in, maybe Davies instead of Debuchy?
    Any suggestions would be good.

        I will drop Mariappa if he is not starting every game, I will pick whichever Spurs player is at number 10, I will pick Siggy if my budget allows it because I would still like Fabregas in there and no, I am not a Spurs fan. I thought my name and picture gave that away.
        Also Dzeko has terrible fixtures whilst Adebayor has great ones so if Ade is starting, I will pick him and then swap them after 6 weeks.

        Luis and Debuchy are just cheap routes into good defences and the otehr 3 are just teh cheapest guaranteed starters for 4.5m in those 3 chosen team that I picked mostly for rotation. Stoke and Swansea rotate well so Cameron and either Siggy or Shelvey will rotate and also Palace and QPR rotate well.
        I am not thinking about bonus points, simply the cheapest starting route into 5 chosen defences.

        are there any stand out options? I am trying to see if it is worth it or not for 3-5-2 as bojan campell and fletcher are good options at 5,5 but what are the respective midfield options at 5,5?

    Still struggling with my defence, pretty set on GKs though, DDG/4.0.

    Any thoughts on this?
    Debuchy, Huth, Taylor, Chester, Wisdom

    Stoke, Swansea and Hull gives me a rotation untill GW 10

      I would deffo upgrade Albrighton to Hoillett. Look at Leicester's first 10 games and compare to QPR.

      You'd just never select Albrighton.

    Any comments guys?billy jones (sun) is a bit of a punt but seen him play and he likes to get forward. I quite like Sunderland defensively under poyet too.

      The problem with Sunderland are that their opening fixtures are not kind at all. "Easier" opponents away, and tough opponents at home. I don't see many clean sheets.

      If you want the extra 2.5 to fund Pelle > Costa, I think you can chop it off the defence - you'd have to lose one of Terry/Vert.

      Injuries helped his cause if I recall right, and at times I think S Bruce played 5 at the back and Bruce was accomadated,
      He's just not guaranteed starts and with Europa looming he could end up upsetting your whole team.

    Last season, Speroni scored 144 points under Tony Pulis.
    The season before that, Begovic also scored 144 points under Pulis.
    In comparison, Cech has scored 146 and 144 points respectively in the past 2 seasons.

    Tempted to go Jovetic for Costa and upgrade Fabs to Haz to or Henderson to sterling

      I think Siggy or Henderson and an 8.5m forward like Giroud could be a good shout if you don't have any of them. None of those three options look especially appealing.

        Hmm I'm not sold on Siggy or Hendo really. Not sure why...

        I'm really struggling to fill my third striker spot, the options are poor.

        Not a fan of Giroud, he's not even fit, doubt he'll start the season. Plus Arsenal don't have the greatest of starts?

        Rather than paying £8.5m for a forward I don't want, might as well take a punt on a £5.5m with cracking fixtures. He has scored twice already in pre-season too...
