Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – Ankle Scare for Welbeck

Danny Welbeck is subbed off on England duties with an ankle knock, while Raheem Sterling complains of fatigue. David Silva serves up a goal and assist for Spain as Diego Costa finally gets his name on the scoresheet for Vicente del Bosque’s side. Elsewhere, Marko Arnautovic is an early worry for Stoke after being forced off during Austria’s win over Montenegro.

WELBECK ANKLE WORRY FOR GUNNERS

Danny Welbeck could be set to be added to Arsenal’s growing injury list after hobbling from the pitch in the second half of England’s 1-0 European Championship qualifier victory over Estonia. Roy Hodgson has, however, moved fast to assert that the ankle problem looks to be a minor one:

“I don’t think he’s injured. He just rolled his ankle slightly. The doctors are not worried about it.”

The Scout Says: Welbeck currently stands as the most transferred-in forward this Gameweek, with over 48,000 managers acquiring his services thus far, all of whom will now be sweating on his fitness ahead of Arsenal’s clash with Hull on Saturday afternoon. Hodgson’s words certainly offer optimism, though we will await to hear what Arsene Wenger makes of the situation upon Welbeck’s return to north London. A possible absence could well see Alexis Sanchez move up front against the Tigers – the 10.3-priced midfielder may not have registered returns since Gameweek 4, but has still racked up five goals and a pair of assists in 12 appearances for the Gunners in all competitions from out wide. Arsenal have an excellent schedule ahead of them (HUL, sun, BUR, swa) but their current injury crisis will undoubtedly dampen expectations – with Welbeck potentially joining the recently-injured Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey on the sidelines, Wenger – and Fantasy managers alike – will be desperate for the likes of Theo Walcott to finally return to the frame.

STERLING GETS HIS WISH

Roy Hodgson was forced to bench Raheem Sterling in England’s win yesterday after the Liverpool youngster complained of fatigue prior to the Estonia clash. Having previously stated his intent to not give in to Brendan Rodgers’ demands over resting Sterling, Hodgson admitted that the winger approached him directly to raise the matter:

“We were just about to have a light session at the Grove and he said, ‘I feel tired and I don’t think I am in my best form at the moment’. I admire his honesty for telling me. It was two days after the San Marino game when we did a lot of running then because we had a lot of the ball.”

Sterling was, however, introduced as a substitute after 64 minutes against Estonia, and won the free-kick for Wayne Rooney to curl home the winner.

The Scout Says: Having only played a total of 71 minutes across England’s two Euro qualifiers this week, there is surely a strong chance that Sterling will now start when Liverpool square up to QPR next weekend. Certainly, Fantasy managers will be keeping a keen eye on the situation – Sterling is the most popular midfielder in the FPL game, with an excess of 53% ownership, and if his fatigue carries into domestic matters we would have to re-assess the situation if Rodgers also decides to ease him into action. With question marks continuing to hover over the teenager’s pitch time, Jordan Henderson is beginning to emerge as an intriguing cut-price alternative in the Liverpool midfield – costing just 6.0, and having bagged a 13-point haul in his last appearance, the former Sunderland man has already convinced over 33,500 managers to jump aboard this Gameweek ahead of the potentially highly profitable fixture at Loftus Road on Sunday.

SILVA IMPRESSES FOR LA ROJA

David Silva supplied a goal and an assist for Spain last night as they defeated Luxembourg 4-0.

The Scout Says: He may have picked up returns in just one of his last six appearances for Man City, but Silva’s recent performances have seen the little Spaniard earn plenty of interest round these parts. With an ownership of 11.6%, Silva is the most popular pick in City’s midfield right now and has a decent forthcoming schedule (TOT, whm, MNU, qpr, SWA) to continue to convince. Meanwhile, further up the field for Manuel Pellegrini’s side, Stefan Jovetic recovered from his recent injury difficulties to feature for Montenegro last night as half time substitute. The forward, now back down to his starting price of 8.0, is set to rival for Edin Dzeko for a starting spot alongside Sergio Aguero as City welcome Spurs to the Etihad this weekend.

COSTA BREAKS SPAIN DUCK

After 516 minutes of international football, Diego Costa finally notched his first goal for Spain yesterday as Vicente del Bosque’s men recovered from their midweek defeat in Slovakia.

The Scout Says: Costa is in dreamland right now. That’s the forward’s tenth goal since his summer switch to Chelsea, but possibly the one that will taste the sweetest, after his international displays were subject to criticism in some corners over recent months. Further good news for his remarkable 66.9% ownership is that, having only missed eight minutes over the course of Spain’s two recent Euro Qualifiers, his hamstring problems appear to be in the past. Crystal Palace are up next for Chelsea and Costa’s owners will be understandably confident of him adding to his tally.

STOKE WAIT ON ARNAUTOVIC

Stoke City’s Marko Arnautovic earned an assist as Austria ran out 1-0 victors over Montenegro in their Euro qualifier yesterday, but was later hooked after sustaining an injury.

The Scout Says: Mark Hughes already has worries out wide, with Victor Moses and Mame Biram Diouf currently nursing knocks and Arnautovic now looks set to add to the list of doubts for the Potters’ Gameweek 8 home clash with Swansea. The Austrian has been a member of the starting XI for Stoke’s last two league fixtures, and with Peter Odemwingie still absent, a spell on the sidelines for Arnautovic could offer Liverpool loanee Oussama Assaidi a route into Hughes’ first team plans in the coming weeks. The Potters have three tempting home encounters (SWA, WHM, BUR) in their next five, though their current injury worries are proving a serious impediment for investment.

Fantasy Football Scout Community Champion needed.

As you may have noticed we’ve revamped our Scout Picks. Mark, myself, Paul and a community champion picked by you each week are up against each other.

We are now looking for Gameweek 8’s Scout Picks Community Champion to represent you and get one over on The Scouts.

To put yourself forward simply add in your Gameweek 8 Scout Picks here. For everyone else please upvote the poster you would like to represent you based on their picks.

We only need 11 picks and please be mindful of budget. We are sticking to a budget of 83.5m. There’s no captain in the picks either and please stick to a designated FPL formation, including no more than three players from one team.

I’ll leave this vote for 24 hours and come back at 10am tomorrow to find out who is the community’s choice.

Once selected I’ll need you to email me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk with your final scout picks and 200 word explanation (I’m happy to take bullet points) by Thursday 5pm at the latest. There is time to alter based on injuries on Friday daytime – just keep me updated by email. If your champion fails to submit their final team by this time then an assistant from our team of moderators and contributors will step in.

      My picks for the week:

      Adrian (5.0)
      Azpilicueta (6.0) - Gibbs (5.3) - Schlupp (4.5)
      Hazard (9.9) - Silva (9.1) - Cazorla (8.2) - Assaidi (4.9)
      Falcao (10.9) - Sturridge (11.2) - Bony (8.5)

Total budget well spent and I've dared to be different 🙂

Some will argue that Schlupp, Cazorla, Assaidi and even Sturridge aren't guaranteed to start but a combination of form, injuries and a desire for points means their Managers can't leave them out.

      Forster
      Bellerin - Baines - Bertrand
Sanchez - Di Maria - Sterling - Lallana
      Aguero - Welbeck - Cisse

You may notice I've decided to go without Costa, in order to see what it might do for the rest of the team. He is my likely FPL captain, but that reflects more on his consistency than his explosiveness away from home - in a one week format, it's a risk I'm willing to take.

The alternative leaves me with Welbeck and Cisse, both starting to come into form with plum home fixtures. Kun faces a Spurs side he managed 3 goals and an assist against last season - in just 113 minutes of pitch time.

I've decided to go big in midfield - Sterling and Lallana have the skill to create havoc between the lines of QPR's dodgy defence, Sanchez is surely nailed on with Arsenal's absences, and Di Maria's form makes him impossible to ignore.

At the back, I'm also taking a risk on a double up, backing the Saints to shut out
Sunderland - who failed to score at Burnley and QPR in their last two away from home. Hector Bellerin is a likely starter at right back with Chambers's suspension, and I think he has the pace and ability to cause Andrew Robertson problems for Hull. My final pick is the good Lord Leighton of Baines, at home to Villa, who I will not insult with any further justifications.

GK and defence got easy fixture and all defenders have attacking potential.
I expect for Sterling and Fabregas to destroy QPR and CPL. Tadic and Wilshare should pay off their good games.
Aguero scored last time when he played vs Tottenham, so I hope he will continue. What to say about Costa? 🙂 Cisse is in good form and Leicester is not so good in defence.

      Some people say never mind
      That we're running behind
      The scout leaders.
But I say come on readers!
We the community can win this one
And I'll tell you how we'll get it done:
Let's ignore the team with players reverential
This ones all about being differential.
So all with ownership under ten percent
I'm gonna tell costa and sterling to get bent.
My team's below but it's just a draft
(I might be crazy but I'm not daft).
So vote for me community! Be bold!
This differential team could be fantasy gold.
And it must be true because it rhymes.
      Sort of.

      Forster
      Mangala Janmaat Bellerin
      Sanchez McGeady Mane Hazard
      Cisse Sturridge Aguero

Forster - Solid Defence and a great fixture at home to Sunderland. My Saints cover for GW 8.
Mangala - Another player in a solid defence with a good fixture against Spurs at home, also has great attacking threat from being a target in set plays
Janmaat - Fixture against a Crappy-Away Leicester side, + One of the most attacking fullbacks in the game
Bellerin - Cheap Arsenal cover for their great fixture against Hull at home

Sanchez - A world class player who is now more nailed on and has a great run of fixtures to prove his worth. He's already netted twice and gotten an assist this season with reduced minutes and will surely punish those who are selling him with a top fixture against HULL aat home.
McGeady and Mane - Both are cheap yet great options for their favourable fixtures. McGeady against Villa at home and Mane against Sunderland at home. McGeady has already notched once and bagged and assist this term, and this is with minimal minutes with Mirallas out, this is his time to shine and is a great budget option @ 5.5m
Mane looked very attacking for the Saints in his last 2 fixtures, unlucky to come away without a goal from last week's game against Spurs, Mane has already bagged an assist in his last 2 games and looks like he has quite a few goals in him

Cisse - Another punt in the XI, is Papiss Cisse. The Newcastle man has scored 4 goals in 151 minutes, and 1 start. A remarkable achievement and with 4 goals in his last 3 games the Senegalese international is in flying form. A terrific option for this week against a leaky Leicester side at home.
Sturridge - The man Liverpool is hoping will spur them forward after a few disappointing performances this term. The Englishman is expected to be reinstalled to the Liverpool starting XI this weekend and looks a very exciting prospect for the coming weeks and definitely this week for their game against QPR. We hope for loads of points from the 2nd highest goalscorer of last season.
Sergio Aguero - The Argentinian could've had more than 2 goals last week, and was very unlucky to come away with a single one...looks like him, Silva and the rest of the City team are on the verge of exploding o the attacking front and you wouldn't want to go without at least one of them for a fixture at home where they've been so strong over the past few seasons. Aguero is my man from the Sky Blue side.

That's my reasoning and hope you vote for my team if you think it's worthy of one 🙂

Forster & Bertrand - Southampton have only conceded one goal at home - Sunderland have only scored in one away match - must be odds on for a clean sheet.

Ivanovic - the top scoring defender - collects points at both ends of the pitch.

Baines - every man and his dog is trying to squeeze him into their team, so how can I leave him out?

Sanchez - expect Arsenal to score a few goals against Hull.

Di Maria - 3 double digit scores in the last 4 weeks.

Fabregas - Chelsea always score, and Fab should get an assist.

Siggy - the top scoring midfielder, and a bargain.

Costa - Mr Dependable. Always scores (except at Man City).

Cisse - 4 goals in 3 matches - Newcastle may have an awful defence, but they know how to produce prolific centre forwards.

Sakho - 3 goals in his last 3 matches, and outscoring all the highest priced players apart from Costa ands Aguero.

'It was two days after the San Marino game when we did a lot of running then because we had a lot of the ball.”

This is very concerning about Roy's Worldview. Surely having the ball should mean you need to run less, as you're controlling the game?

Think he means because they had a lot of the ball in the game, they did some running/fitness work 2 days after which is stupid in it self since they have been banging on a bout work load and it was a day of s game.

I may be wrong, but to have a lot of the ball, the players need to run a lot to create space and give options for the player on the ball. Thus players like Xabi Alonso who gets so much of the ball run the most out of anyone else on the team

Attacking players need to make more sprints to create space when the team is on the ball. I'm quite sure that Cahill and Jagielka didn't run too much against San Marino, but Sterling might have.

And by sprints I mean to make the point that it is not only a matter of km covered, as frequent short sprints are much more tiring than an even pace jogging around to close off space when you're defending.

Sorry for the essay... I may be overthinking but i made some calculations... An article in FFS gave me the "push" i needed to start thinking seriously of dropping Costa, so: Costa's gametime may be reduced (Remy and Drogba should get minutes sometime) and Hazard's form can only be better than this. Hazard on pens. But even until now, Costa scored 9 goals in 7 matches (i doubt he ll keep up) and Hazard only twice incl. a penalty. And yet their difference is only 15 points (about 2 pts per game so far). Costa is worth 1.3 mil more than Hazard atm so a good way of using this 1.3 may give an advantage in overall rank. I have been thinking about a way to improve my rank and get some "differentials". Having 2 FTs, 3 transfers came to mind, either all of them this week for a -4 that could be easily covered, or 2 FTs this week and one next week. My team's weakness is 2 midfield players, with Downing returning to Midfield (it seems impossible to return "in the hole" Zarate was great last week) and Tadic giving an assist per 2 games so far. I am thinking of doing:

Downing, Tadic, Costa out Hazard, Cazorla, Berahino in and 0.5 to use elsewhere, maybe upgrade N.Taylor to Kaboul or Rose.

I am pretty confident that the latter could outscore the former. My team will be

    Mannone, Heaton
    Baines, Clyne, N.Taylor, Moore, Wisdom
    ADM, Sterling, Hazard, Cazorla, Boyd
    Aguero, Welbeck, Berahino

    Thoughts?

    1. crazyasianac
      • 11 Years
      9 years, 7 months ago

I don't like the idea of playing berahino week in week out. Also, Tadic has been unlucky not to get more points. You're also assuming Hazard will suddenly turn his form around when he has scored 1 goal from open play in his last 30 odd games

Exactly and he's consistent, whereas hazard points are hard to predict making him a poor (c) choice.

    4. 7shadesofsmoke
      • 11 Years
      9 years, 7 months ago

yet their difference is only 15 points (about 2 pts per game so far) 😆

      1) 2 (.15) points per game is huge. Over the 38 game season, that is 81.7 points from ONE position in your team, and those 76 points are ON TOP of the performance of a 10m midfielder.

      2) if you think 15 points is nothing to worry about (after just 7 GWs) then take 15 points off Hazard's score and see what sort of players you are looking at there (Arfield, Lanela, Brunt) and ask yourself - would i rather pay £1.3m more for Hazard? Yes, you would.

I don't imagine Costa will continue to score so frequently, and I doubt Hazard will change much in his own form, so the decision to make the changes isn't necessarily a bad one.

BUT, when you dress figures up as something they aren't, it just sounds like you are trying to delude yourself.

Hopefully the points above help you resin this a little better in your own mind.

Thanks, I am just trying to find a way to avoid having the "standard" team (Ivanovic or Baines, Clyne or Bertrand, Sterling, ADM, Fab, Sig or Chadli, Costa, Pelle etc) And Costa's ownership is way too high he should be 50-55% at most. Even Suarez had less ownership last year and he had 2 Bonus points at least in 80% of Liverpool's games. And no CL. Maybe i ll try it for a couple of weeks and if it doesnt work i ll accept my mistake an get him back. I already did it once this year. Or i ll accept your advice and keep.

        1. 7shadesofsmoke
          • 11 Years
          9 years, 7 months ago

I think you can find good differentials in the next few weeks - Cazorla could be great but Walcott is on his way back and Sanchez is ready to explode.

Benteke is returning and Villa's fixtures improve greatly in a few weeks and Sturridge is also coming back into the game.

Other players will give you signs of form and I'd wait for this to happen before making changes for the sake of 'being different'.

Try to be clinical and pick players solely for their points potential, not based on being different.

          - that is if you are just trying to do the best you can vs rivals or OR. If you just wanna play it footy manager style and have a nice team sheet to look at, fire away! 😀

No worries mate, points wise won't be a huge amount in it but azpi does seem to be a bap magnet and will give you an extra 0.4 to play with. You could try and upgrade naismith to welbeck with the funds you have.

hmmm, not the best reasoning for him missing out.

Wisdom is on loan from Liverpool, thus he was ineligible for the game. He has been excellent up until then, as his manager has made a point of saying.

Gamboa was great in his absence, and certainly raises a case for concern but by no means is Wisdom benched. I'd still consider him favourite for a starting spot.

true, but still I don't see him getting more than a point against man u.....even if he starts

this is probably how i'd see it, but you just don't know. If he plays, his chances of a clean sheet are not a whole lot different to any other defender

I had a few good quotes in Say What? for GW7 (if I do say so myself 😎 )

...Andre Wisdom was excluded from West Brom’s match day squad for the trip to Anfield due to Premier League loan conditions and the agreement opened the door for Cristian Gamboa to stake a claim for first team action at the Hawthorns…

“It’s difficult because Andre played in the first few games in the Premier League, but I enjoyed myself on Saturday. I will keep fighting for the spot and hoping I’ve done enough but the coach will have the final say. It’s healthy that we have this battle. It’s good to have someone there fighting with you for the spot. We have good right-backs and the final decision is down to the coach.”

The performance certainly drew encouragement from Alan Irvine. The Baggies’ manager admitted that he now faces a selection headache which is sure to manifest in FPL discomfort with 4.4-valued Gamboa posing a threat to popular budget defender Wisdom, whose ownership has stretched to 12% in FPL.

“It was a really good debut. Cristian has been waiting for his chance and he showed the energy and the enthusiasm that we saw from him in the World Cup. He was a player I was really keen for us to get. We had competition but fortunately he decided this was the best place for him to come. I was hoping he would give me a selection problem and he has done that.”

What makes you think Wisdom will be benched?

It seemed obvious he didn't even realise why Wisdom didn't play last week.

There is a better chance of Baines keeping a 4 CS in row then Oscar Pistorius getting any jail time.
