The Community Round Up

The availability of Diego Costa, European exertions and the impressive Gameweek 8 points hauls of the likes of Dusan Tadic and Sergio Aguero were among the key topics under discussion this week. In this latest round-up we look back at all the best community chatter as well as look back at this week’s community articles, members tables and star turns in our various leagues and tournaments.

The Community Articles

Our community writers hopped over the English channel this week to investigate how European competition involvement influences Premier League sides. Kesh took a look at the lessons to be learned from Arsenal’s Champions League clash with Anderlecht, while Ludo published this excellent analysis of whether there really is such a thing as a Europa League hangover.

West Brom may not have European involvement but are still a side to interest our community scribes. Among The Puntmaster‘s trio of punts this week is Baggies defender Sebastien Pocognoli. Meanwhile, West Brom were among the hottest properties going into Gameweek 9 in both attack and defence, according to The Sarjeant’s latest form gauge.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Will he or won’t he? This is the key question being asked on Diego Costa’s chances of making this weekend’s clash with United. Chelsea boss Joe Mourinho has been known to favour more than just the occasional mind game and revealed earlier today that his star striker has “a very little chance” of making it. Given the uncertainty, some community managers, such as Chris_ White, have already transferred out the striker as we discovered in our discussion on the Costa dilemma.

Rickardinho has also been looking at Costa exit strategies and served up this excellent pros and cons post on ditching him and drafting in Sergio Aguero for a hit. Dusan Citizen was another to sing the praises of City’s Argentine this week. He wonders whether given his startling recent form he could even be granted the accolade of being this season’s version of Luis Suarez.

If Diego Costa fails to make this weekend’s game his price will surely plummet, although it may take quite a few more absences to qualify for Wakey’s Falling Stars team, made up of those whose price has fallen below their initial price tag. Wakey gave us an update on how his falling stars from Gameweek 8 performed and showed that there are plenty of bargans to pick up. His Gamweek XI achieved an impressive haul of 70 pts, 21 above the average with Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez and Everton’s Phil Jagielka among his top performers.

Southampton’s Dusan Tadic was another to enjoy a stellar Gameweek 8: he duly delivered on his promising underlying statistics with a 23-point haul. Such was his impact that Seb 10 asked whether Tadic now deserves “essential” status. Demi is not convinced and wants to see further evidence, while O’Shaughnessy believes he is the best mid-priced midfielder based on his data and last weekend’s tally.

Another player to flirt with that hallowed essential status is Everton’s Leighton Baines. He was also a principal guest the points party, notching an impressive haul of 15 in Gameweek 8. However, Costra Nosta warns against forgetting the attacking threat of his fellow Everton full back Seamus Coleman.

For those that had Aguero, Tadic and Baines in their team a bit points total was inevitable, prompting E6 Hammers to take a stroll down memory lane to look back on some similarly impressive high-scoring game weeks of yesteryear.

Saniul was the winner of this week’s search for a community Scout Pick champion and has a huge gap of more than 100 points to help the community make up over top placed Paul.

This week we also announced that the champion who manages the best Gameweek score (or best score from the first ten matches in a double Gameweek) will win a £100 Amazon voucher. While we’re at it, a reminder that, from Monday, our weekly search for a champion will be via a community article rather than a hot topic.

The Members Tables

Goalkeeper’s prowess was the subject of 46612’s table, which is filtered by “saves made”, while Doosra has been looking at fierce foragers, his term for forwards that hold onto the ball.

Meanwhile, Sleep Talk has been assessing goalscoring defenders over their last four matches, a table sorted by shots in the box.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

The Tinkerman is clinging on to the lead of the Fantasy Football Scout moderators and contributors league and now sits in 439th overall in FPL. Mark is closing in and is now just two points off the lead after his strong post-Wildcard Gameweek.

Rasping Drive was another to enjoy a bountiful weekend. He is in 32nd overall in FPL and sits proudly atop the Puffinboy Memorial Cup for veteran posters, the FFS Old Farts Club for our posters of advancing years as well as the FFS Dead Zone league.

In TorresMagic‘s Last Man Standing competition, ADAMS_6  hit the top score in Gameweek 8 with 127. There are now 1054 teams left after 63 were eliminated.

Elsewhere, ENR dropped by to deliver this update on all the latest ups and downs in the FFS UEFA Hockey World Cup themed tournament.

I agree w/ ADN, owning him is enough of a differential. As skipper I don't see it as the icing on the cake, more like the sprinkles on a banana split. It's already got enough going for it.

Curious... If he cost £9mil & had been putting up the numbers he has, would this even be a question?

That's a very good question. I do feel like the price of players does influence my decisions more than it should. My rationale is sometimes along the lines of he's higher priced so that must mean he must be better which is obviously flawed logic.

Great point. Last season taught me to look at the player rather than the price. It may sound mad to most but I've seriously thinking about it. Aguero's form is irresistible but in two weeks time I reckon the lad will be my captain for sure.

CalTech and Stanford researchers have seen direct evidence that increasing the price of the same wine significantly increases the pleasure we get from it.

I need to get Kun on my team but dont know if this is worth it:

    Wilson-Sterling-Welbeck ---> Dummet-Boyd/Obertan-KUN (-12 if done now, -8 next week)

Is anyone taking a different approach to this season than previous seasons?

In the 2 years I've played FPL, I've made over 65 transfers both seasons. This season I'm taking a more conservative approach and haven't taken a hit yet. I love taking hits as it makes the game more exciting IMO, but my hit-free approach seems to be paying dividends so far. Is anyone trying something similar?

    1. Les Bleus
      • 12 Years
      9 years, 6 months ago

      I've taken the same approach.

I've only taken one hit with the Rooney/Ramsey debacle and with a rank of 8k or so, it seems to be working fine for the moment.

But I started the season very conservatively and only got players that were PL proven. I stayed clear of the "punts" such as Tadic and De Jong (although, Costa wasn't really a punt IMO)

Absolutely the same, ran my team like a business in seasons gone by for the first third but recognised with different price change system this was less of a tactic. Trying to focus less on team value this time. Before was taking hits for hits for the sake of rises and it did work before. This time have only taken two hits and so far that has worked also.

My plan this year was to follow more bandwagons for price rices taking a few early hits on the way and not try to be too different. Having taken only 2 hits and having missed fab, siggy and di maria and instead getting players like ince and tadic suggests that ive completely ignored this in practice

    5. Mull
      • 12 Years

It's all situational imo. The best strategy depends on a lot of things, for example, this season there hasn't been that much need for transfers because the best players at the start are still doing well now in Costa, Fabregas, Sigurdsson and Di Maria. In a few weeks time it could all change with big players getting injured or having bad fixtures which would require a change of strategy.

      Patience & Stastics.

Keep players if they're putting up the stats that equate to fantasy returns.

eg. Sterling only got 1pt v. AVL... Sell! The sky's falling!
He's got 24pts in the following 4 weeks...
      Why?
Because, he gets more shots in the box than any other mid. Not to mention, being near the top of the list for creating chances for his team mates.

That's the correct way to play this game. Make moves that have good expected value and then in the long term you'll get a good rank. After that you need a bit of luck to really get in the top 1000 rankings and a lot of it to go higher.

Well, I did Baines, Welbeck (-4) for Pelle, Naylor transfers last week. Came out ahead by 2 points and got my team in good shape for the weeks ahead. A couple of weeks earlier I did a Pelle, ADM (-4) for Rooney, Ramsey. I came out ahead in a couple of transfers in GW4 too on bringing Costa in.

These aren't necessarily bad hits then, right?

I've been following the same logic, trying to keep the number of transfers down and giving players a chance to come good even when they haven't scored. Was working well until last week! Sticking to my policy I ignored the advice on here to get Baines, Aguero, Tadic and/or Pelle.

Innsie, looking at your team its not surprising you haven't needed to take hits. It looks very strong. I guess that comes down to good selection of your initial squad.

I tend to make less drastic changes year to year. Adding to my strategy bit by bit.

This year I'm trying to get on certain bandwagons earlier, and picking certain player I don't rate as FPL options simply because their bandwagons are big enough. Basically trying to prevent another Yaya Toure situation.

I'm also combining stats with my own gut feelings a little better (ignoring ADM stats and getting him in anyway).

Was planning to take the same approach last season but things does not always go to plan though I'm liking it tbh..

Going for the lay-low approach not minding anything else till friday night. save some trannies then go for a mini WC (2FT+1 hit) to fix things up. more importantly just looking at stats and fixtures to rack up the points.

Other than captaincy it looks. Rvp has neither the form nor fixture so you relying on the out of the blue result which comes in sometimes but you will lose more than you will win if you keep playing against the odds like that

Other choice is Aguero or Welbeck, who've both just come out of the UCL with 90 mins IIRC. RVP does like scoring against them...

Chadli. Lowest ownership so it's less likely to affect your ranking if he scores big. There's a good chance that the decision will be made for you if Costa isn't fit.
