Scout Scribbles – Bony Back in Training for City

Wilfried Bony closes in on a return to action for City. Hugo Lloris could be in contention for Tottenham, conflicting reports surround the fitness of Toby Alderweireld, whilst Harry Kane looks poised to turn out for England Under 21s in this summer’s European Championships.

Bony Returns to Training for City

Wilfried Bony took part in first-team training on Wednesday, having sat out Manchester City’s last three matches with an ankle injury.

The Scout Says: Following City’s switch to a lone striker formation in the previous two Gameweeks, Sergio Aguero has rediscovered his scoring touch and netted three goals. Prior to that, the Argentinian frontman had struggled to find his rhythm in a two-man attack, drawing blanks in five successive matches. As such, one might expect head coach Manuel Pellegrini to be wary of reinstating £30 million January signing Bony upon his eventual return, with the Chilean’s job hanging in the balance in light of three defeats in five. Indeed, with three winnable home ties (AVL, QPR, SOU) left on the agenda, City might not require the extra firepower to finish a disappointing season with a flourish.

Uncertainty surrounds Alderweireld fitness

Only yesterday, Southampton boss Ronald Koeman revealed that news on Toby Alderweireld’s recovery from injury is “positive”, suggesting that he could be in contention for their Tottenham visit on Saturday. Unconfirmed reports emanating from Belgian journalists earlier this morning suggest the versatile defender “won’t be available for a few weeks”, though.

The Scout Says: Having started Gameweek 32 at right-back, the versatile Alderweireld found himself employed in a two-man pivot alongside Morgan Schneiderlin during Saints’ 2-1 loss to Stoke City on the weekend due to Victor Wanyama’s suspension. With the Kenyan enforcer serving the second game of his ban next Gameweek, Alderweireld’s potential absence could prompt Koeman to drop Steven Davis back into the midfield two and field James Ward-Prowse in the No. 10 berth or move Sadio Mane into a central role behind Graziano Pelle. At a price of just 4.9, Alderweireld has offered a cheap alternative to Nathaniel Clyne (6.2) and Ryan Bertrand (5.9) of late but with the Saints poised for a trio of road trips in their final five fixtures, in addition to home encounters with Spurs and Villa, many owners may now be considering selling their assets for double Gameweek contenders instead.

Lloris closing in on weekend return

Reports suggest Hugo Llloris is back in contention for Tottenham’s trip to Southampton after being sidelined for the last three league matches with a cut to the knee.

The Scout Says: Although Lloris’ possible return to action would undoubtedly be a boost to manager Mauricio Pochettino ahead of the south coast showdown, even the much-vaunted French shot-stopper hasn’t been able to prevent Spurs from leaking goals this season. Aside from Queens Park Rangers (five), Crystal Palace and Leicester City (both six), no side has earned fewer clean sheets (seven) than the North London club, while only the Foxes (66) have conceded more big chances (65). With first-choice right-back Kyle Walker all but ruled out for the season with a foot injury, doubts over Danny Rose (hamstring) and a testing schedule on the horizon (sou, MCI, sto, HUL, eve), further shut-outs look increasingly unlikely for Tottenham’s rearguard regardless of the Frenchman’s availability.

Kane eager to play in U21 Euros

FA Chairman Greg Dyke insists that Harry Kane is determined to line up for the England U21s in the European Championship this summer:

“I got a call from Harry Kane’s agent recently just to say how much he enjoyed playing for England and how much he wants to play for the Under-21s this year in the tournament, in the Euros. And I think that’s important. If you’re a young English boy coming through the system, you should want to play for England.”

The Scout Says: Considering that Tottenham’s pre-season friendlies kicked off around mid-July last summer, and the U21 European Championship concludes on 30 June, Kane is likely to rejoin the group in the middle of their training fixtures – given that he’ll require a holiday upon returning from Czech Republic. The chief concern here is that the PFA Player of the Year nominee could at risk of burnout, having tallied 46 appearances for the Lilywhites in his breakthrough season and started their previous 23 league encounters. Already, then, there are growing concerns over his availability for the start of the following season, which gets underway earlier than ever on August 8.

    RMWCT

    Schmeichel (Davis)
    Terry Ivan Skrtel (PVA Vlaar)
    Silva Haz Hendo Sterling King
    Kun Vardy (Giroud)

Then over the GW 35-37 I will transfer: Silva, Ivan & Hendo > Sanchez, Ramsey & a cheap defender

      Ditto Palace vs Hull.

      Or from DGWers: Schlupp.

Is Skrtel really worth the extra 0.7mn?
I was thinking of my transfers upto GW 37 and if i wanted Vardy-->Defoe then i would need that extra cash...
Thinking too much ahead or just bring Skrtel and have an awesum team for GW 34-35?

I'd go for the best team you think you can get for the DGW, should net you far more than a 4 point hit to change later if you need to.

    or

Besides planning for Arsenal's DGW 37, which you could plan transfers for in the next few weeks - why would you have Arsenal players in your WC team before they play Chelsea this week?

I guess people may have had Giroud or Sanchez for a good number of weeks, so they would have a low sell value and be difficult to bring back. That's the reason I kept Giroud.

I went with Rochdale on the other thread. 36 years in (what's now) L2. But is the question who's currently been in the same division the longest? Wouldn't be Rochdale if that was the case as they've only recently been promoted.

I think those that used their WC this week will live to refer it.

Chelsea and Liverpool are not free scoring, Liverpool are actually vulnerable after the weekend, Chelsea seek happy to grind out results while Leicester are the form team but are not reliable in fantasy terms.

Surely the best play would have been to take the hits this week to add the one or two extra players (as most had 3 Chelsea already) and use the WC in 37 to load up on Arsenal, fill your bench with Sunderland and then tweak the rest to include players from teams with everything to play for instead of players for teams now who could all be on holiday mode then ie Liverpool, Chelsea, City, United and Arsenal could still be fighting for second but the rest should all be settled.

I agree with what you are saying absolutely, but I have a feeling Pool aren't going to be in holiday mode. A CL spot, while distant, is still potentially there so I can see them trying to finish strong. But I agree on the overall sentiment, one of the reasons I will be ditching Clyne to fund some Arsenal players in the coming weeks as Southampton do not seem remotely bothered to me.

By the time 37 is here mate they will know if they have a chance or not, 37 and 38 could be very limp for them if they have no chance.

Oh, sorry, I meant by saving it for 37 as in if you still have it all to play for, if you are floating around in mid table then it don't matter when you use it.

People wilccarding now will most likely have Sanchez and Giroud anyway and just get Ramsey Gw36 and will probably already have PVA with no need for any extra Sunderland player

That would be some wildcard, using it and having 20M on your bench, thought the point of the WC was to give you a leg up in the week not hinder it.

More likely to grind out a couple of dull 1 nil then knock 4 or 5 past both, confidence will be low after getting embaress at Wembley.

I'd like to see Schlupp making the runs and passes he was doing a while back, still under 2%.
A CS, goal, a couple of assists and 4 BPs would be good.

Oscar has big potential, if he gets the game time.
Hazard has never scored more than once in a single game this season, but Oscar has scored twice in Gwk 22.
Hazard has scored and got an assist in the same game twice, so has Oscar.

He's the one I'm most scared of. After he nailed a DGW in a previous season, I vowed I'd never be without him in a double again. I bought Cesc last week instead as I didn't want to sell Cresswell at home to Stoke for Ivan. So I have gone back on my word. And regretting it.

All those saying Diamé do realise that he's not played more than 30 minutes in a game, had a touch in the box, or a goal attempt since last November. He's not even nailed on to start, surely. 😆

I envision another destabilizing shock to the system - undermining everything we thought we knew to be wise and true!

I can see a few SGWers being hot property.. and it would be just perfectly crushing if it was the ones we are all shipping out - like Silva.

Because the template for DGW players is so low in variance.. I can see lots of opportunities for SGW players to become more important - players people have overlooked in favour of improving DGW / longer term formations (like QPR and Crystal Palace players for example)

Austin to defy expectations once more!

            Murray's last hurrah?

Maybe Gardner will have another go at it.

            Benteke could really surprise too.

Basically I expect SGW players to be the biggest upsets..

          Clyne, Sanchez & Boyd -> Skrtel, Sterling & Coutinho/Henderson (-8)

          Worth it?

Yeah I'm not keen on selling, but then again not keen on going with just one Liverpool asset for the DGW...

FWIW I sold him two weeks ago to get 11 out last week and bring in an extra DGW player in Fabregas. I know I'll want him back next week and have kept enough cash scuttled away to get him back in, but it does seem like a waste of transfer.

          Kos/Bert -> Skrtel?

          Then GW36: Terry -> Bellerin/Monreal & Austin -> Giroud?

          Team:

          Myhill, Rose
          Ivan, Terry, Bert, Toby, Kos
          Haz, Sanch, Sterling, Hendo, Boyd
          Kun, Kane, Austin

              Yeah.

I guess my reason for getting rid of Kos was to free up funds for Giroud.
I think those GW36 transfers leave me 0.0 ITB.

I guess I can keep Kos, but just do Terry to PvA (or someone) to free up (even more) cash instead.

McShane (Hull) is pretty nailed, yeah? Will be downgrading Ivan to him in order to raise funds. Will be wishing to play a Hull defender for BUR game in couple of game weeks. . .

I'm starting to think double Liverpool defence may be the way to go. Would you do Myhill > Mignolet for a second hit? Would also get rid of Myhill ahead of the poor run of fixtures with Pants as second keeper. Thanks.

I'm not sure how pants rotates with mignolet but Myhill can step in for the Newcastle game when Liverpool have a tricky fixture.

Cheers. Pants has Everton that week followed by a double so I think I'd rather hold him over Myhill if selling a keeper.

Would Duff be a nice option to cycle with Skrtel? On a WC and I'd like to free up funds for Remy -> Giroud.

          Currently my back 5:
          Terry, Skrtel, Schlupp, PvA, Aldy.

          Downgrading Aldy -> Duff.

          Or, another 4.4m.

Get Davis as GK lose Aldy, one Saint defender suffiecent now imo , if Ospina your GK would lose him keep the 3rd ARS spot open

            Stevie G's impact.

Had posted a bit about this yesterday but have crunched the numbers on the 3 most popular players and how he impacts their PPG.

            Henderson with = 3.68 PPG
            Henderson without = 7 PPG

            Coutinho with = 2.9 PPG
            Coutinho without = 5.8888

            Sterling with = 4.476
            Sterling without = 5.888889

Of course, we also have to look at recent form (Henderson 1 blank in 6 games, Sterling 3 blanks in 6 games, Coutinho 4 blanks in 6 games). For me, it is Henderson vs Sterling, form is in Henderson's court but Sterling's returns are safer when Stevie G is on the pitch.

Damn, that confirms Coutinho isn't a better bet than Henderson if Gerrard plays. It seems he suffers just as much. That has altered my thinking significantly, cheers.

Worth looking through the history for yourself, for example I think a points per 90 minutes value would probably be more accurate (as Coutinho had a few 20 minutes appearances here and there) but it just gives the general idea that, as you say, he suffers just as much. 🙂
