Team of the Season – Alexis Sanchez

Alexis Sanchez’ £35m switch to the Emirates last summer carried a weight of expectation that was relative to his sizeable transfer fee. Given that only PFA Player of the Year Eden Hazard and Golden Boot winner Sergio Aguero outscored the Gunners’ marquee acquisition in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, it’s fair to say Sanchez hit the ground running and will be a Fantasy favourite for the duration of his stay in North London.

The Statistics

Sanchez didn’t take long to acclimatise to the unique rigours of the Premier League, notching two goals and one assist in his first four starts. The Chilean international’s value then slipped from 10.5 to 10.3 by Gameweek 7 due to injury, before six goals in four fixtures saw non-owners frantically cobbling together the funds to bring him on board.

Beyond a frenetic first 11 Gameweeks, Sanchez offered sporadic returns, netting in six of his subsequent 25 starts. Most notably, a six-match stretch from Gameweek 22 – in which the former Barcelona man sat out two matches through injury and drew blanks in the other four matches – prompted 500,000 managers to cash in on the South American. Nonetheless, eight 10+ points hauls and four 15+ points hauls over the course of the season cemented his status a big hitter.

Ultimately, the former Barcelona winger ended the campaign with the third-highest total score (207), behind Hazard (233) and Aguero (216), establishing himself as a top Fantasy pick right from the offset and the prime choice for Arsenal coverage – Santi Cazorla (168 points) boasted the next best haul within the Gunners squad.

No midfielder chalked up as many goals as Sanchez (16) last term, while eight assists placed him joint-sixth among his counterparts. Furthermore, Sanchez earned the third-most bonus points (29) of any player in the league – trailing Harry Kane (32) and Hazard (42) – and ranked fourth in the overall leaderboard with regards to points per game (ppg), with his average of 5.9 far outstripping Arsenal’s second-most consistent performer in Mesut Ozil (4.7 ppg).

The Prospects

The first port of call when expounding on Sanchez’s potential next season is his scheduled involvement in the Copa America with Chile. Gunners boss Arsene Wenger recently voiced his concerns over the summer tournament, questioning whether the Premier League attendees are being afforded enough time to recover ahead of the new season:

“I am really surprised that FIFA authorised that. It’s disappointing that they speak a lot about the health of the players but when you look at the competition that is organised, this Copa America, and look at the date of the start of the Premier League, it is not reasonable. Moving the fixture calendar forward deeply affects pre-season and I believe it is the wrong decision of the Premier League to start on August 8.The players have played the World Cup, then you have no winter break, you come out and when you reach the FA Cup Final, you play on May 30 and the European players called up by their international teams play until June 14. Then you start on August 8. If you count six weeks’ preparation, where is the time for recovery?”

Given that the final of the Copa America takes place on July 4, Wenger is wary of involving Sanchez from the off, should Chile make the latter stages:

“It’s not good news because they finish very late and if Chile go very far he will miss the start of the season.”

Clearly, then, Chile’s progress could have an impact on how we construct our initial squads for the season ahead. Wenger rested German duo Mesut Ozil and Per Mertesacker for Arsenal’s Gameweek 1 fixture last term after their World Cup exertions, with the pair returning against Everton for the following fixture on August 23. Given that the upcoming campaign starts a week earlier, it may well be that, if Sanchez makes the Copa America final, he could be afforded a rest from domestic duties until Gameweek 3 this time out. Those managers wanting to draft him in would have to pre-plan an entry route for Sanchez beyond Gameweek 1 to accommodate his services.

Certainly, there’s no shortage of temporary alternatives in the Arsenal midfield. Ozil, Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey remain nailed on, whilst Theo Walcott’s end-of-season flourish has given his manager real food for thought up front. If the former Southampton winger can oust Olivier Giroud as the Gunners’ lone striker, his out of position prospects would surely make him one of the most popular picks across the Fantasy games, given he’s likely to remain classified as a midfielder.

Although Sanchez served up four braces in his debut campaign, he was subject to 1,500,000 ‘transfers out’ last term, with many frustrated by his inconsistency as a Fantasy asset. Despite his direct involvement in 24 (16 goals, eight assists) of Arsenal’s goals, the Chilean drew blanks in 21 of 35 league appearances, rendering him a far less reliable captaincy choice than the likes of Hazard. Nonetheless, his overall haul of 207 points means he will remain the priciest option amongst Arsenal’s attackers, with a price of 10.5 or 11.0 anticipated.

Whilst Sanchez could, conceivably, miss the first couple of matches, the underlying stats suggest he’ll be near-impossible to overlook once fully fit. In his first season in the top-flight, he produced more shots (121), efforts in the box (71), shots on target (49) and goals (16) than any other midfielder. If he steps up another level next time out, few will be willing to ignore him.

All this talk of Falcao going to Chelsea. I think it's a bit unfair from him towards United.

United rehabbed Falcao for a year, treated him like a club hero even though he was shite and he wants to go on and join Chelsea, a title rival. A nice lad certainly.

He needs to jump at any opportunity of a big club coming in for him before he potentially fades into nothing-ness. Obviously wants to prove that he's able to do it at the highest level.

I didn't say he is shite, I said he was shite for the time he was at United. He certainly has potential and he has proved it before.

And after the season he had, I don't think any sane person would offer him a permanent contract and pay that much money for him. No thanks.

The future fee agreed with Manu was 43m based on his pricing last season. The reports are that Monaco are now willing to take a drastically reduced price, coupled with Falcao's willingness to nearly half his wages in order to join Chelsea, might not be that big a gamble for Chelsea after all.

Yeah, for Chelsea it's not bad. I wast talking about United who had to pay 43m in order to sign him and keep him at his current wages as was agreed before.

He has no obligation towards a team that he played for on loan for one season. Where do you draw the line? Can't join any big European side because United might play them in the Champions League? If he wants to stay in England, he'll jump at the chance to join the champions (also the side in the top 4 with the least riivalry with Utd).

This Champions League comparison is a rather ridiculous one. Do you think all the hatred Arsenal fans throw towards Persie is unjustified? Would they have done the same if he joined let's say Madrid? Obviously not.

I could see the temptation and not saying it's the worst idea, but he should keep in mind that he has to repay United fans for all the support.

I do think the hate Van Persie gets is unjustified, yes. Same with Torres when he left Liverpool. I don't understand why football fans think players should have so much loyalty to a team that they don't support. Take Sterling at the moment; did Liverpool fans kick off when he left Palace? Did Arsenal fans hate Van Persie when he left his boyhood Feyenoord? Liverpool fans unhappy about Torres leaving Atletico?

No hatred of Sol Campbell is unjustified:
              http://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/apr/26/sol-campbell-are-most-footballers-tories-probably

Seriously, aside from pantomime booing and light-hearted rivalry, genuine hatred over a footballer leaving is unjustified. As an Everton fan, it was hurtful when Rooney left the club he supported, but I fully respect his decision. A massive pay rise, a chance to win trophies and further his career - fair enough. Van Persie won the league, Sol Campbell was part of the invincibles side - I'm sure neither have many complaints.

So was I, but I don't HATE him for it. If any of us were offered a job with a rival company with a far better salary, I'm sure we'd jump at it. That's before even considering the potential for trophies.

I guess hate is a strong word. My hatred of Van Persie is pantomime hatred.

So I feel schadenfreude when he misses sitters like he did this past season. That sort of thing.

It's sort of an expression of loyalty to the Arsenal to panto-hate apostates.

Everton were a top 5 side, the gap was about the same as Utd to Chelsea the past 2 seasons.

Rooney was a boyhood Everton fan, he wore a "once a blue always a blue" shirt, was adored by the fans and the city, and was 18 - hardly needing an immediate move to win anything. He agitated for a move to leave the club that he was meant to adore, then has taunted our fans when paying against Everton.

Falcao is a 29 year old Colombian. He has been at Utd for 9 months, has barely played, and the club don't want to keep him.

Everton and United were not rivals...that's some interesting historical reconstitution. We consistently finished in the bottom half of the table for a sustained period before Moyes, and had the financial capacity of a lower bottom half side. Our subsequent rejuvination was possible in part because of the proceeds of the Rooney sale, which allowed us to strengthen a weak squad and team. The 'once a blue always a blue' shirt was kick in a teeth, but let's not pretend that Everton were better than they were. Everton were closer to the Villa of today than the United of then.

Fair enough, but Chelsea and Utd aren't really rivals - it's not like Utd and Liverpool. I just don't see how you could be annoyed by Falcao, a one year loanee that you don't want, going to Chelsea.

They have competed for title for years and were head to head after Mourinho came almost every season. That developed a rivalry, known as title rivalry. And have been rivals ever since.

My point is that all football fans see their own side as a special club, but never have any complaints when a player does the same thing in the other direction. I don't remember many Liverpool fans complaining when Nick Barmby and Abel Xavier joined from Everton, or many Utd fans complaining when Van Persie joined them.

Obviously, they won't be complaining as they are getting the better deal. But do we think, it was unfair on the fans of the previous club? I do. United fan here, I think Persie wasn't fair with Arsenal fans and he has a lot of making up to do to them. There is a lot of significance of loyalty in football and he was disloyal.

There's a little bit about RVP and Arsenal though:

            1. He had posted a childhood pick of himself that showed he was an Arsenal fan
            2. he was not a mentionable player before joining Arsenal. I think he had at best scored 6 goals in a season or something like that.
            3. He was held and cherished through seasons of injuries, and matured into a top striker
            4. and then after just one strong season he jumped to the modern day arch rivals.

So yes, there's something to hate about it. In the end, it may have been a blessing in disguise, as he only gave ManU one good season too for that fee.

The reason we hate Van Persie is that Wenger made his career, moulded him into a world class player.

He then gave us one decent season before playing his best season at a bitter rival, with his goals winning them the title.

His celebration when he scored against us also left a bitter taste.

I think he didn't celebrate during his first season at United when he scored against Arsenal. It was only after continued abuse that he started celebrating against Arsenal.
I'm not saying the hate is unjustified, even though I'm a United fan here. The players have to return the favors of all the support the club fans have given them. It's the best thing to do.

Lol, don't think Chelsea would play him if he joins, not ahead of Costa. He would be destroying his own career really sitting on the bench. The time for him is to prove that he's still got it and at a big club he would hardly get any game time.

He really won't, might not even be ahead of Remy and I'm sure he knows that. He would probably still want to have a go at the big time though rather than always be at a mediocre club like Monaco.

I do not understand why Falcao owes United loyalty?! Just because he played poorly? United signed Falcao hoping that he would rediscover the form that made him one of the very best strikers in the world. They wern't engaging in an act of charity, even if Falcao has flopped horrendously (as seen retrospectively). United's management essentially choose Falcao over Welbeck because they wanted to increase the quality of the team. He has not exactly been given plenty of opportunities to shine (Even if injuries interrupted his progress), and owes United about as much loyalty as they owe him.

Not because he played poorly but because United treated him like a hero even when he was poor. It's a nice thing to return the favor to someone who has treated you well.

And he got plenty of chances and didn't perform. They couldn't play him every game in the hope he performs when United were fighting for a CL place.

I don't get this at all. I don't get your point.

Falcao was treated like a hero because he was a big signing. He didn't play that well, you move, he moves on. I don't know how a one year loan player should base his judgement on his previous employers' and their rivals.

Mata was a hero for Chelsea for 2 years. More than Falcao was for United, he went to United, no one is complaining and I am sure both sets of fans still love him. I really don't get the point of Falcao.

I'm sure he'd be happy to stay in ManU if they offered him a contract, but what I've understood, it's that ManU did not want to sign him, so can't see how and why he would be bound by ManU.

I've just had a great idea for the FFS team of the season!

They could get rid of the Scout Picks, and everytime an article gets published about the player, then they add that player to where the Scout Picks were, and eventually it'd become the FFS team of the season.

I hated Alexis this year !!

I had him from the start then sold in Oct when he was injured for Di Maria. Sanchez missed only one week and then continued to score a shed load. I got him back on my Winter WC to then sell again on my actual Wildcard. I loaded up on Liverpool mids and got Giroud as Ars cover and we all know what the Chilean done against Hull...

    Points dodging to the extreme.

I did a lot of points dodging with Alexis too. In fact I remember before he started that run where he got like 40 points in 3 games, I was discouraged from doing ADM (on fire at the time) > Sanchez when I had the chance and then after that I couldn't afford him and missed out on all the hauls.

The trouble with Alexis next season is that he will be even more expensive.

However, casuals will get him in in spades, notice that he's not playing and then sell. And then his pice will come down, and then I'll get him before he starts starting, and then soon, the whole ... world ... will ... be mine ... ALL ... MINE!

I think Cameron Jerome could come good. His pace will be tricky for any defender and he will be full of confidence after last season.

He's always shown moments of brilliance but never consistency. If he provides that he could be gold.

I think Alexis has taken David Silva's status. Usually with Silva you would either own him or not, not bring him in around his hauls. Hwever, this season he has shown a lot more consistency.

Sanchez, on the other hand, often has score patterns of 15, 3, 2, 2, 5, 2 so he's one of those "keep or don't bring in" players.

I know which one I'll be getting next season.

I just don't think he is worth his price imo. Yes, he's explosive, but as the above article states he is quite inconsistent. Arsenal's attacking assets are a minefield, although Walcott will be straight in my team if he's nailed.

Of course, but he scores consistently, unlike Sanchez. You won't need Silva as a captaincy option with Aguero so there is no argument to say it's better having someone explosive.

He also scored more than 7 points against

hul, BUR, eve, che, WBA, tot and swa.

It's not like you'll expect double figure hauls against top sides anyway, so the above shows his capability of scoring against decent sides.

On paper, with a few big signings (keeper, central midfielder, striker) they definitely could. The problem is that we've been saying this for the last decade; they're always a couple of players away and never get those players. You also have to think that their rivals will strengthen.

They could win it, but I don't think they will.

Not sure they have the bottle to win it if I'm honest but I think they need 3 key signings if they were to win it - GK, DMF, FW.

Think they'll maybe address the first 2, maybe just DMF in fact and then just wrongly rely on Giroud and Welbeck/Walcott next season.

I wouldn't be surprised if they address none of the key positions. Wenger has already said they don't need Vidal because they have a lot of cover in that area, which is classic Wenger.

He is right though. Vidal isnt a dmf and ramsey wilshere and cazorla currenlty playing there. Why wouldnhe waste 30m on a position he already has 3 players good enough to win the league

Because Vidal is a world class player, and in a big game a midfield of, say, Coquelin and Cazorla won't cut it. Coquelin and Vidal would be able to compete with the best in the league.

If he has other targets in mind instead then fair enough, but I will guarantee that if Arsenal don't buy a central midfielder, they won't win the league.

Id say say coquelin and ramsey/cazorla can compete with anyone in the league. Dont think anyone has dominated arsenal in midfield since coquelins retunr. And then there is ramsey who is only going to improve.

Coquelin has certainly been a revelation, but it must also always be kept in mind when discussing Arsenal that they're liable to have an injury crisis at least once a season. If Coquelin sustains a serious injury, they are in huge trouble.

On the other hand, Coquelin is one of the hardest players I've seen in a while. The main is bleeding from his head and he keeps going.

I'm happy with the Arsenal squad, but if a player who can improve any team in the world (like Vidal) becomes available without breaking the bank, the Arsenal should get in there.

Schneiderlin would also be a great buy. They are still one player short in that midfield. They will have a spate of injuries at one point - it's Arsenal - and they need genuine quality in depth. If you end up playing City or Chelsea with Flamini and Arteta in midfield, you're screwed.

If you start with Flamini and Arteta in midfield, soon you will have Arteta in midfield.

I don't like the concept of a defensive midfielder. I prefer two box-to-box midfielders in front of the back 4.

If Vidal signed, he could play there with Ramsey or Diaby or Coquelin.

We don't really need Vidal. On the other hand I don't really need a Ferrari.

That last sentence is key. To win the league, and certainly to do well in Europe, you have to stop just looking at what you need. Arsenal didn't really need Sanchez, they could have has Rosicky/Wilshere/Walcott there instead. Chelsea didn't really need Fabregas, they had Ramires/Mikel. Barcelona certainly didn't need Suarez, they had Pedro, or could have played Xavi with Iniesta further forward, as they did last season.

For Arsenal to go to the next level, they have to stop just thinking "that's good enough". If a world class player, who will improve your side, is out there, get them.

Id really like to see English clubs actually try in the EL next year. None of the teams will get top 4 and none will get relegated imo. Winning it gives you a European trophy and automatic qualification to the following years CL. Much better than finishing 6th and only getting a few million more than finishing 10th

If De Gea leaves, a good replacement in the form of Cech or Lloris.

A good RB and a CB. Alves and Varane/Laporte could be ideal.

A CDM - Schneiderlin to be exact.

A decent backup striker for when Rooney is not available.

Leno or Handanovic if De Gea leaves. I don't view Cech or Lloris as much of an upgrade over Valdes. The latter 3 are all about equally sound with a decent defense in front of them. If United trot out a suspect defense again and lose De Gea they'll need a stud keeper.

Nah, we need Schneiderlin more. Don't think Vidal will add much to the squad after being another expensive signing. We need a Carrick replacement who is good defensively and can dictate play from the back. Vidl likes to attack.

Vidal doesn't have that defensive work rate that Morgan has. A midfielder who's more focused on breaking down play is what United needs the most. Someone like Matic. Vidal's like Yaya. Sometimes helps defensively, other times doesn't.

Heck even no offering Johnson the contract extension already sound like improvement to me. 😉

Definitely not at the moment, that's why Palace finished way ahead of Newcastle. Things always change though, no 2 seasons finish with the same table, so a few of those teams will surprise us. I did a pre-season prediction on the Guardian site and, while it wasn't bad overall, I had Hull, Sunderland and Newcastle in mid-table.

Its definitely possible. Cook and Lyth proved that in the first innings and the team really should have gotten a massive score. In saying that NZ should win and I'm a little annoyed we declared this early. Another 5 overs of batting could have helped ease the pressure.

Was expecting a declaration, that left two or three overs before lunch.

All 4 results are still theoretically possible, but would say 60% NZ win, 40% draw, Tie and England win extremely unlikely.

Game time and/or England blocking for a draw.

England will literally have to play old school and block everything in order to achieve a draw. This test hasn't really been like that so far, its been very attacking. I wouldn't want to bet on a draw with those odds.

Was only 4.5 last season, because he wasn't expected to start.

I doubt Tabanou coming to Swansea to compete for the same spot with Taylor.

Alexandre Lacazette not signing for Liverpool, says Lyon president Jean Michel Aulas

Aulas on Twitter: "Your information is trash.

"Liverpool have never called, and as they are not playing in the Champions League, they don't have the money, nor would they be able to interest him."

Hahaha brutal but fair. I do laugh when Liverpool fans mention signing players like Benzema and Reus, what world are some people living in?

Well, to be fair, Angel Di Maria signed for United last season.

I think that it's not so much Liverpool not being in the Champions' League but more that they don't seem to have prospects of returning anytime soon.

Utd can still ride the wave of being Utd, last won the league a couple of years ago, absolutely huge club, won loads in the last decade. Liverpool haven't won the league for 25 years, and have been in and out of Europe recently, falling in the group stage this time.

They've not really made a huge signing in the last decade. Suarez wasn't a superstar when he signed, so this idea that top players are queueing up outside Anfield is laughable. Unless they're bought by an Abramovich type, I'd be surprised if they won the league in the next 15 years.

I think England have to try and win it. Too much time to bat through and I can't see England surviving 2 days and not get 450 runs

Bendtner has started only 13 games in the last 3 seasons and has won Serie A, FA Cup and DFB Pokal during that time.

And with that I'm off. Have a good one lads.

Quite a dangerous game England are playing here. Racking up the runs a little too quickly for my liking. One of those is going to get nicked to the slips.

I suspect this first ball is going to act like it did in the first innings. Not a lot of swing movement
