Team of the Season – Alexis Sanchez

Alexis Sanchez’ £35m switch to the Emirates last summer carried a weight of expectation that was relative to his sizeable transfer fee. Given that only PFA Player of the Year Eden Hazard and Golden Boot winner Sergio Aguero outscored the Gunners’ marquee acquisition in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, it’s fair to say Sanchez hit the ground running and will be a Fantasy favourite for the duration of his stay in North London.

The Statistics

Sanchez didn’t take long to acclimatise to the unique rigours of the Premier League, notching two goals and one assist in his first four starts. The Chilean international’s value then slipped from 10.5 to 10.3 by Gameweek 7 due to injury, before six goals in four fixtures saw non-owners frantically cobbling together the funds to bring him on board.

Beyond a frenetic first 11 Gameweeks, Sanchez offered sporadic returns, netting in six of his subsequent 25 starts. Most notably, a six-match stretch from Gameweek 22 – in which the former Barcelona man sat out two matches through injury and drew blanks in the other four matches – prompted 500,000 managers to cash in on the South American. Nonetheless, eight 10+ points hauls and four 15+ points hauls over the course of the season cemented his status a big hitter.

Ultimately, the former Barcelona winger ended the campaign with the third-highest total score (207), behind Hazard (233) and Aguero (216), establishing himself as a top Fantasy pick right from the offset and the prime choice for Arsenal coverage – Santi Cazorla (168 points) boasted the next best haul within the Gunners squad.

No midfielder chalked up as many goals as Sanchez (16) last term, while eight assists placed him joint-sixth among his counterparts. Furthermore, Sanchez earned the third-most bonus points (29) of any player in the league – trailing Harry Kane (32) and Hazard (42) – and ranked fourth in the overall leaderboard with regards to points per game (ppg), with his average of 5.9 far outstripping Arsenal’s second-most consistent performer in Mesut Ozil (4.7 ppg).

The Prospects

The first port of call when expounding on Sanchez’s potential next season is his scheduled involvement in the Copa America with Chile. Gunners boss Arsene Wenger recently voiced his concerns over the summer tournament, questioning whether the Premier League attendees are being afforded enough time to recover ahead of the new season:

“I am really surprised that FIFA authorised that. It’s disappointing that they speak a lot about the health of the players but when you look at the competition that is organised, this Copa America, and look at the date of the start of the Premier League, it is not reasonable. Moving the fixture calendar forward deeply affects pre-season and I believe it is the wrong decision of the Premier League to start on August 8.The players have played the World Cup, then you have no winter break, you come out and when you reach the FA Cup Final, you play on May 30 and the European players called up by their international teams play until June 14. Then you start on August 8. If you count six weeks’ preparation, where is the time for recovery?”

Given that the final of the Copa America takes place on July 4, Wenger is wary of involving Sanchez from the off, should Chile make the latter stages:

“It’s not good news because they finish very late and if Chile go very far he will miss the start of the season.”

Clearly, then, Chile’s progress could have an impact on how we construct our initial squads for the season ahead. Wenger rested German duo Mesut Ozil and Per Mertesacker for Arsenal’s Gameweek 1 fixture last term after their World Cup exertions, with the pair returning against Everton for the following fixture on August 23. Given that the upcoming campaign starts a week earlier, it may well be that, if Sanchez makes the Copa America final, he could be afforded a rest from domestic duties until Gameweek 3 this time out. Those managers wanting to draft him in would have to pre-plan an entry route for Sanchez beyond Gameweek 1 to accommodate his services.

Certainly, there’s no shortage of temporary alternatives in the Arsenal midfield. Ozil, Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey remain nailed on, whilst Theo Walcott’s end-of-season flourish has given his manager real food for thought up front. If the former Southampton winger can oust Olivier Giroud as the Gunners’ lone striker, his out of position prospects would surely make him one of the most popular picks across the Fantasy games, given he’s likely to remain classified as a midfielder.

Although Sanchez served up four braces in his debut campaign, he was subject to 1,500,000 ‘transfers out’ last term, with many frustrated by his inconsistency as a Fantasy asset. Despite his direct involvement in 24 (16 goals, eight assists) of Arsenal’s goals, the Chilean drew blanks in 21 of 35 league appearances, rendering him a far less reliable captaincy choice than the likes of Hazard. Nonetheless, his overall haul of 207 points means he will remain the priciest option amongst Arsenal’s attackers, with a price of 10.5 or 11.0 anticipated.

Whilst Sanchez could, conceivably, miss the first couple of matches, the underlying stats suggest he’ll be near-impossible to overlook once fully fit. In his first season in the top-flight, he produced more shots (121), efforts in the box (71), shots on target (49) and goals (16) than any other midfielder. If he steps up another level next time out, few will be willing to ignore him.

As mentioned below, Doos, I don't think he is worth the outlay. Great player yes, but has a very high price for inconsistent (yet explosive) returns.

The Arsenal attack is a minefield and so it seems sensible spending 2-3m less on a Cazorla/Ramsey/Walcott etc.

Arsenal have by far the best strength in depth in their midfield. Wenger might rotate players a good bit more next year, which might take from the value of Santi, Ramsey. Sanchez looks rotation proof once he's back after he's rest.

Agreed on Jack being great , massively underrated by non arsenal fans

But so we're Walcott & Ramsey , and in my view he's better than them

Not sure he will be a fantasy prospect though , can see him it ting deeper and he's never going to be a 15 goals a season mid

Klopp more looking like taking a break

"After seven intense and emotional years, I think it's a good idea to let the numerous memories settle in before I take on a new challenge with my coaching team, refreshed and fully motivated," Klopp said in a statement published by Germany's SID agency.

"I'm going to take a break until further notice."

    Toure latest

"I will definitely stay,” he said. “The fans don't have to be worried. "My target this year is to try to do everything possible to make this team improve well."

    Arsene Wenger on Vidal:

“Arturo Vidal? You must be from Chile!

"We have good midfielders and at the moment we are not looking at Arturo Vidal."

I guess it depends on bargains, yes.

Although I'm fairly sure I'll have Aguero (depending on Copa America), Hazard, Silva and one of Ivanovic/Terry. I'll build my team on them. I have my eyes on Bolasie, Hendo, Bojan, Rooney, Cisse as some other attacking options.

Any players that you guys reckon could be decent value this year that didn't have the best season or could remain cheap next season?

I know until the price list comes out it doesn't give a proper way to gauge it, but here are some of mine.

GK: Valdez (finished £4.9), Guzan (finished £4.6), Krul (finished £4.4)

DEF: Kolarov (finished £5.8), Gibbs (finished £5.2), Rose (finished £4.8), Wisdom (finished £4.0)

MID: Walcott (finished £8.2), Mirallas (finished £7.2), Henderson (finished £6.6), Mané (finished £6.3), Sissoko (finished £5.8), Puncheon (finished £5.5), Adam (finished £5.4), Albrighton (finished £4.3)

Dont really care abt any of those players but they might be available cheap. Other than Ade/Eriksen, none of them have a chance to be in my team. 😛
Plus don't think any of them have performed to be priced higher tbh...

Regarding Sanchez, only 3 of his 7 double figure hauls came when Giroud was playing and 3 while Ozil was playing.

It may not seem by much but his season history generally indicates he scores worse with those two playing.

My perspective is that he won't be worth his price, explosive yes, consistent no, and consistency should come before explosiveness with premium midfielders imo. The Arsenal attack is a minefield as we saw this season, it would be better to either ignore it completely or get a cheaper option such as Ramsey, Cazorla, Giroud, Ozil etc (depending on fixtures).

    1. Stats Don\'t Lie

This is exactly my thinking and will be reflected in the Arsenal article when I write it.

I will very likely avoid the "which is the right Arsenal midfielder" debate entirely and have none of them unless one is wrongly priced. What could change that would be a spate of injuries. Sanchez was brilliant from October to mid January when Ozil, Giroud, Walcott and Ramsey were all unavailable for long periods and he was the main man. Replicate that kind of situation again and the decision is a very different one.

        Yep well said.

Walcott could be an option (imagine if he was OOP) but yes it might be better to go without entirely, maybe a defender would be better

Yes, Walcott is the interesting one if he's likely to replace Giroud as 1st choice. He'd be pretty much a must if that happened I think.

It seems like everyone intends to start with both aguero and hazard but I think I'll go with neither.

Firstly aguero has the same issue as Sanchez as will have had virtually no rest thanks to Cops America.
Also, from previous seasons hazard always tends to start slow and so I think fabregas may be a better option to start with as he always seems to do better early on.

If Oscar leaves then I'll definitely get Fabregas. Good point regarding Aguero.

Regarding Hazard, I think most people (myself included) expect him to just continue on from where he left off. We could well be wrong though.

Idk, Ive just been thinking about past years and I feel like getting fab til about December and then swapping to hazard may work out well.

In attack, I think starting with Costa and Rooney may be a safer option.

Aguero played a World Cup and got to the finals yet he still managed a quality season through injury, just saying

With Chelsea's players set to rise in price I'm finding it hard to find value at all, also think Fabregas may be the better option depending on the prices

I think pkwrona is referring to the start of the season re Aguero, not the season in general. He could have a point, although he scored in both, Kun made two cameos of the bench after returning from the WC.

Agreed, Fabregas over Hazard at the start for me. Aguero is tough; if he's ruled out at the start then that's easy, but if he plays, even if he's exhausted, I will be scared not to have him. He is a player that can bag a hat trick in any game, and if you miss that at the start then it could be costly.

True. However, even if he starts I reckon it maybe in a partnership with bony just to ease some of the pressure that comes with playing as a lone striker, and Aguero doesn't seem to score as week playing with a partner up top.

        1. Doolittle
          • 11 Years

I think that would be a big mistake, City are nowhere near as good with 2 up top, but it is a fair point: they've bought Bony for big money a few months ago, do they have to fit him in somewhere?

Aguero as a lone striker is an entirely different proposition to Aguero as part of a 2. I think I read on here the other day that his PPG is close to double figures as a lone striker?

Maybe Bojan, and I think/hope that Everton will have a much better season. Hard to pinpoint exactly who will profit, but I'd expect one of the fullbacks and Lukaku, Mirallas or Barkley.

Cresswell: Will depend on manager and his price. He is good while moving forward but may not be a good option if Hammers can't keep clean sheets.
Bellerin: Full backs are likely to be rotated imo, can't see Debuchy on bench for many games(if fit).
Ramsey: Not really a fan tbh, prefer Cazorla or Walcott(if price are in similar range). This can obviously change if he starts banging goals again.
Aarons: Think Colback will be better pick than him.
Berahino: Part of Pulis team. Might get benched or installed on wings for Ideye/Anichebe.

Agreed on a lot of that except the Bellerin and Ramsey points - i think both are nailed on if fit and great options. Walcott could of course be the diamond but again even if he is upfront surely Giroud will play (subbed on) quite often

I really like Cresswell as a player, but I think he'll be 5.5 again, and West Ham have Europa League qualifying from the very beginning - they'll have a match the Thursday before GW1 should they make it through the first couple if ties (as will Southampton). I'm avoiding West Ham and Southampton in my initial side for this reason.

Bellerin is likely to be cautiously priced quite highly, and whilst he has the ability to remain first choice over Debuchy, he's certain to be rotated at least as much as Montreal/Gibbs, and likely much more.

Unless they've got terrible opening fixtures, I'm fairly sure I'll start the season with an Everton defender.

JRod and Aarons aren't for me until they show some form - both look to be great young attacking players, but match fitness is a lot different from being back in training.

Yep all fair points, a lot comes down to who WH get as manager imo in the case of Cresswell.

Bellerin i think is close to nailed, Debuchy really is awful i expect him to play league cup etc

Stones looks a good prospect if he can stay fit

Yep - agree here, big injuries but pricing could be kind for that reason and they may be ones to draft in if they show any form what so ever for the rises.

I know Middlesbrough because I follow them a bit. But they didn't make it unfortunately, George Friend would have been a good rotation defender. I don't fancy Bournemouth and Watford defences at all but Norwich might be worth a look, maybe Russell Martin?

Norwich also have a couple of interesting midfielders (Dorrans, Redmond) but they'll probably be too expensive for a 5th mid. For a 4.5 mid that starts for his team you probably have to wait for a transfer that happens from another club after prices are announced (like Boyd and later Fletcher this season). Atsu is another one that would be perfect but not at 5.5 which is what I'm guessing he will be.

Janmaat - loads of assists and huge potential in a good newcastle year, which they're due

Kolarov - signs he'd nailed a spot down at the end fo the season

Herrera - Big upside, great start, and if he's nailed every week I think he has 10+ goals in him a year and could be very good value

Kane - a lot will avoid, but a consistent spurs striker is generally gold dust. If he's 9 or below I'll get him.

Stones: Everton's defence has been awful this season.
Aarons, Ritchie, Berahino & Deeney: I'm not a fan of attacking players from bottom half teams.

      In:

Depay: A big signing from LVG who I hope hits the ground running. But for every Suarez the league also produces an Altidore.

Giroud: reliable af mid-priced forward. Iff Arsene doesn't buy another forward this summer.

      PVA: attacking cheapie.

Toby/Yoshida: Soton defence depending on Toby moving permanently or not.

Well they only have Bayern to compete with but yes i get your point. I think alot of it came down to having Lewondowski / Gotze / Reus / Gundagun and there excellent full backs etc on top form.

If he went to Liverpool im not sure who would be able to take on those roles as effectively

I see the Bayern point but there are up coming strong teams such as Leverkusen Wolfsburg and Schalke. But it's no excuse for his poor season this year, I agree

              Agreed on the teams.

We must not write off the injuries and the very poor performances from certain players either, but as a while Dortmund were poor.

Your point is fair I think as he's an unknown quantity. But it was him and Zorc who worked to bring in/develop their great players over the years. Lewandowski was a bit of a nobody before Klopp took him on, as were some others. Indeed, nearly all players who have left Dortmund have subsequently not been as good.

Whether he could do similar at Pool, I don't know. Zorc isn't given remotely enough credit imo.

Barrios was their main striker when he won the league in 2011, Lewandowski only scored 8 goals, and Gundogan wasn't even there that season (Klopp bought him). He also bought Pisczcek on a free. They sold Sahin and in the double winning season Gotze only played 14 league games. Kagawa was their best player, then they had to sell him and got to the Champions League final.

Not saying he'd necessarily do that over here, but Klopp's achievements at Dortmund are truly staggering.

I think the wheels have come off this season, possibly he knew that it would be his last, but what he has achieved is phenomenal. 2 Bundesligas with Dortmund ahead of Bayern Munich? Throw in a Champions League final, all while playing great football and losing a key player every season.

The utter domination of Lewandowski in the 4-0 against Real Madrid and the interaction between the players and the fans after the game was one of the most immense footballing moments i've ever witnessed. Watching Klopp's Dortmund at their peak was truly exhilarating.

Unai Emery/Frank de Boer aren't as exciting nor as good as Klopp, but still both are upgrades on BR. Review is tomorrow/wednesday mate, I hope something changes at least

I'm not even sure if I want a change in manager now, I need to have a think about this. FdB is a winner but apparently can be stubborn with his tactics like Brendan and van Gaal and as for Emery... I don't know an awful lot about him but he doesn't strike me as a winner despite his back to back Europa leagues with limited resources, it feels too punty.

              Ancelotti... 😀

Brendan's lost the dressing room, we don't have much of an option but to explore potential replacements

Stevie G hasn't really heaped any praise on any previous manager but he did so for Brendan. He isn't the type of person to chat BS to the press

It's unfortunate as I still think he's a decent manager. I despise modern day attitudes of "Manager X fails to motivate the dressing room''. These players shouldn't need motivating! They should already have the discipline to do a job even through it may not be enjoyable. Sadly these kids pathetically do need constant motivation like school children!

Agreed. To get rid of Ancelotti. Why, exactly? They just recently bought his contract from PSG with some big money, and now they fire him? So, one of the best managers around is now free of contract. I'd imagine he'll have takers, just has to choose his club. City?

Good stuff, Gerrard probably edges it for me. One thing I do take issue with is this idea that he essentially won the Champions League final on his own. I rewatched that final recently in amongst the whole fanfare around his departure, as that's a common line trotted out - that it was "Gerrard's final".

The player that won them that final, above all, was Hamann. Gerrard played well second half, after a terrible first half, and did gee up the crowd, but Hamann stopped Milan attacking at will, held the midfield together, and gave Gerrard licence to attack.

The other player that won them the final, and something that is overlooked, was Dida. Gerrard's goal should have been a comfortable save, but he just watched it sail over him, and he should have done better with Smicer's goal as well.

Rafa is becoming a bit of a ho if that's the case. First Chelsea, now Madrid.

Agreed. But Real Madrid seems to be beyond understanding.

Using the football break to start playing my new XBOX. Bought Halo Master Chief collection yesterday. If you own a XBOX One and haven't played it it's a bargain!

Currently going through the original Halo and it looks great remastered.

Have played the first three and quite enjoyed one and two, not played the remastered but have seen it looks rather nice.

Yep, having great fun playing all the old Halo's on co-op with a friend atm.

Multiplayer, on the other hand, is a bit of a disaster for it though.

Yeah heard about that alright. I have other games I'd prefer on multiplayer tbh, but do enjoy Halo single player

I said I'd give it a go a while back. Spent nigh on a half hour searching for a game before I ever got into one.

Just a quick note to welcome Andy85wsm to the FFScout moderators team.

He's been a regular poster on the site for a number of years and will be a great addition to the team (especially if he can avoid beating me in the Mods and Contribs league next season 😉 )

This might be old news to others already, but just stumbled on it:

    http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/leicester-city-racist-orgy-video-5794654

Fecking disgusting! And in other news, the players have _apologised_. Oh really? Wow! I guess it's all good then. Good lads.

I saw this, double whammy of bad news for Pearson as one is his son! Has everyone forgotten when Ferdinand, Lampard and Dyer had an orgy in Ayia Napa when Dyer's pregnant girlfriend was at home? That just seemed to be swept under the carpet.

😆 Thinking the same, to be honest. Pearson père is probably just thanking his luck he didn't videotape his session.

I don't remember this. Was this right after Dyer won the model husband of the year award?

2000 I believe. Kieron Dyer is a complete knob, allegedly he used to walk around Ipswich setting fire to £100 notes, often in front of homeless people (I have heard that from numerous people, I don't think it's just hearsay).

          1. That probably has nothing to do with you being or not being a young footballer.

          2. There's a difference between an orgy and a racist degradation orgy. It is the latter that is appalling here.

You can take the player out of the ghetto, but you can't take the ghetto out of the player.

Because these are "fringe" players, the club has greater "freedom" to "send a message". Think Pearson will quietly step in for his son. As for the other two, probably gone. And yes, these kinds of incidents are always dealt with differently when it is your star players involved, sadly.
