Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Yannick Bolasie

In 2013/14, Yannick Bolasie’s fleet-footed trickery may have caught the eye but, with just four assists to his name, it’s fair to say that the Crystal Palace flier struggled to translate his displays into tangible returns. Bolasie remained a somewhat peripheral figure throughout the first half of last season, before Alan Pardew’s arrival at the club harnessed the winger’s unique talents to greater effect, resulting in a significant improvement in his Fantasy prospects.

Ahead of the new campaign, Bolasie will be considered as a real prospect to sit alongside midfield heavy-hitters. An unpredictable but potentially explosive mid-price asset, the Eagles’ “magic man” could easily justify the gamble. Here’s why…

Key Factors

  • Pardew’s appointment at Selhurst Park marked a distinct transformation in Palace’s playing style. The former Newcastle United boss released the shackles from their wingers, placing a greater emphasis on delivering crosses to the lone striker and midfield runners. This shift in approach was epitomised by the fact that Leicester City (470) were the only outfit to attempt more crosses than Palace (444) from the point that Pardew took the helm in Gameweek 21. Only five teams tallied more goals than Palace (27) during that period, while the Eagles ranked joint-third – behind only Manchester City and Arsenal – with regards to shots inside the box, heightening Bolasie’s attacking prospects.
  •

  • Bolasie made great strides on the productivity front in 2014/15. The DR Congo international recorded an impressive four goals and ranked joint-second, behind Cesc Fabregas (18), in terms of assists (12). Exploring his goal threat in greater detail, Bolasie upped the frequency of his efforts from 44 minutes to 41.9 minutes in 2014/15. He subsequently placed tenth among midfielders for total attempts (69), which was just three shy of Eden Hazard’s tally and three more than David Silva. What’s holding him back is a pitiful 5.8% goal conversion rate which, if improved upon, could make him a mid-price powerhouse. Nonetheless, Bolasie also improved from a creative standpoint, executing a key pass every 64.2 minutes in 2014/15, as compared to every 84.4 minutes in the previous season.
  •

  • Bolasie’s out-of-positon potential further augments his appeal and will perhaps persuade some Fantasy managers to choose him over team-mate Jason Puncheon. Pardew fielded the Rushden & Diamonds academy product centrally – as a support/lone striker or a false nine – at choice moments throughout the season. In fact, his 24-point haul against Sunderland – courtesy of a hat-trick and an assist – was the product of a central role, while Pardew wasn’t afraid to deploy Bolasie up front against Chelsea and Liverpool in Gameweeks 35 and 37 respectively.
  •

  • Bolasie was valued at 5.5 at the start of the last campaign and is in line for price rise to the 6.5–7.5 mark, having contributed to 16 of Palace’s 47 goals. Taking the season as a whole, Bolasie carded a points per game average (ppg) of 3.9, yet comparing this metric under the tenures of Pardew (4.9 ppg) and Warnock (3.1 ppg) better exposes his evolution as a Fantasy asset. The Lyon-born wide man contributed to 10 of the Eagles’ 21 goals upon his return from the African Cup of Nations, highlighting his focal role in their attack.
  •

  • A firm favourite of Pardew’s, Bolasie position as a starter appears to be under little threat. The Palace head coach feels that the winger will attract a host of suitors if he can improve his finishing, given that Bolasie’s goal output doesn’t yet do justice to his spellbinding build-up play:

“He needs to find the end product and he’ll work hard on that next year. We might have a problem next year if he really starts banging them in. The thorn in his side is actual goals. Just on this season, it would be a mistake for a top club to get him because I don’t think he’s ready. But he will be ready in maybe a year or so when he’s got over that final hurdle. Then there will be no stopping him. He’s a fantastic boy and a fantastic talent. I love him to bits. I call him my “magic man”.

Didn't see it, but at 22 he really needs to start getting regular football. Even his loan spells have seen limited game time.

He needs to. Otherwise he'll either fail to develop or need to move so they must do something with him.

Think he needs a British loan. Either to a newly promoted side or a high-flying Championship team.

That's what I think as well, absolutely needs a full season as a first choice CB.

I can't see him getting the chance at us, the manager has no balls in that regard, never gives anyone a proper chance, and I doubt he could do much worse considering he has no clue how to coach defensively anyway.

Hmmm, not sure he's quite at that level of potential.

But he deserves a better chance at Pool, I just don't believe he'll get it unfortunately.

His career has already stalled to an extent, no thought put into his signing or the clubs he was farmed out to clearly, I wouldn't blame him if he wants to move on.

Apparently he played very well, he's been 'Brendaned' though so that basically means he'll get no chance, shame he's quite pacy and very highly rated, would be perfect for us. I guess we'll keep playing Skittles instead.

Not really, often players deny leaving a club due to lowered wage from the bidding club. On a non-wage factor, probably the first.

A club can bid the right fee, which the other club could be happy to accept, but the player and their agent could refuse due to lowered wages etc. At least that is my understanding of certain transfers.

But usually in that case I imagine the owner club make it clear to the player in question that they won't play (possibly driving the player away to the other club).

I'm just saying that I think he'd get in the team, not that he should, I agree Bale deserves that left wing spot if not Ronaldo.

Aguero would be a better signing than Hazard for Madrid.

Inverted wingers are better when you have attacking full backs, and Marcelo is the best of the best going forward.

Reports suggest that we're pretty close to a deal for Gueye. Some Saints fans are suggesting (or maybe hoping?) that that's a move for EL depth, pre-Schneiderlin departure, and more will be invested in CM when those Schneiderlin funds become available. Not sure what to make of all of it to be honest. Sounds like a shrewd signing for £6m-£7m.

Which stat gives you the best view of a team's FPL defence rating iyo?

    A. Clean Sheets................................Pure defence returns, +4pts
    B. Goals conceded
    C. A weighting of the two (i.e. 2:1)

    1. Lucy.
      • 10 Years
      8 years, 10 months ago

      I'd say a weighting.

Clean sheets are hugely important because being able to hold out for that last 5 minutes says a lot more than the difference between conceding 0 and 1. As in, the difference between 1 and 2 is less significant than 0 and 1.

I think something like A, with a bit more depth like chances conceded and so on.

I guess you want some kind of spectrum though... you want to factor in how many times a team can go at least 60 minutes without conceding (to earn the CS) against a rating of whether or not that CS is lost in the ensuing 30 minutes and/or if 2 or more are conceded over any given 90 minutes which would result in -2 points. Its all rather complicated!

and if you wanted to be incredibly detailed with it, you could backwards-extrapolate to whenever that manager took over, while ratio-adjusting any championship to premiership match totals and basing new managers on their league stints at their old clubs. phew!

I think clean sheets are more useful. I would often assume a certain team might concede 2-3 away and keep a CS at home so I would know when to play them.

I plotted a graph of this a while back to check, and they just did not relate well enough to CSs. I will look into it again though, I'm sure I should factor them in, they seem crucial.

Why not do it as equivalent to the points scored by a defender playing every game? Gives you an automatic weighting.

      1. Piggs Boson
        • 12 Years
        8 years, 10 months ago

PpG ratings are included for my player rating values 🙂 But I need an overall team rating first because it's crucial to my plans for the program. If a key player, like Aguero, is injured, his replacement's PpG will be skewed by cameos, and will need team ratings for a better projection.

Adding up the total backline's PpG may be a good idea though. Pts are the most important in this game afterall. Cheers 🙂

Goals conceded or a 1:2 weighting that way.

Stoke are a decent defensive team that had a lot of games where they conceded 1 goal last season. In another season some of those would have been clean sheets. So I'd say that goals conceded gives you a better measure.

The thing is that other people have scored goals like Henry's (James in the WC springs to mind). I have never ever seen anyone score a goal like Bergkamp's.

His goals are always so aesthetically pleasing, it all just looks so effortless.

Born too late, Dr Luce. I was living down in Southampton early 90s and they were a great team to watch, with Flowers, Le Tissier, Shearer etc - Osman and Ruddock having competitions to see who could kick it the highest, more Wallaces than you could shake a stick at.

                    And Francis Benali.

Indeed, there are a few candidates. Immediate list in my head would include Le Tissier's 2 against Newcastle and 1 against Wimbledon (and another against Blackburn I think?), Bergkamp against Newcastle and his 3rd vs Leicester, Henry against Arsenal, Di Canio's volley, Rooney against City, Wilshere's against Norwich (I adore that goal), and there'll be loads more.

One that is always overlooked, I think because it's such an unremarkable player, is this one:

Ha, I remember trying to to that in college. I flicked it round and then span the other way like him but way over did it and did a 360 and just ran the other way and clattered in to a defenders chest. It was hilarious because straight away everyone knew what I was trying to do. I'm pretty sure that's when the phrase 'fail' was created.

I spent many hours in the playground trying that spin and Bergkamp's 2nd touch for his Argentina goal. The ball always flew about 30 feet away.

That's the thing, even I scored a few long range screamers, sometimes you just catch one and it flies in. A goal like Bergkamp's, or Le Tissier's vs Newcastle, or Di Canio's volley - I couldn't do those if I tried for a month.

A long range belter will never ever be the best for me. They're great, but there are always a few a season, and players like Phil Jagielka can score them occasionally. That Bergkamp goal; no one else would, or could, have done that in that moment.

With Bergkamp it was the skill. With the Zola goal it was the decision-making and then the skill to execute it. I was at that game and there was a kind of collective gasp in the crowd when it happened - as the ball reached him not one person in the ground or on the pitch (apart from him) expected him to do what he did. That was what was unbelievable about it.

I have been watching football for a long time but have still never seen a goal quite like it.

I think he dedicated it to a terminally ill child in hospital who he had just visited, just to put it into perspective.

That for me earned him extra skill points.

Derby County have signed Northern Ireland international defender Chris Baird on a two-year contract.
The 33-year-old, who has 72 caps, left Premier League side West Bromwich Albion at the end of the season.
Baird, who played 24 times for the Baggies last term, becomes the fifth player to join the Rams since new manager Paul Clement took charge.
"He is an excellent professional and an important addition on the pitch and in the dressing room," Clement said.
Baird began his career with Southampton and also played for Fulham, Reading and Burnley before joining Albion in July 2014.
Derby have already signed Darren Bent, Alex Pearce, Scott Carson and Andreas Weimann since the end of last season.

Aww, my only sub-4.0 transfer of the season...

I guess this is all part of Clement's 'competition for places' philosophy.

So.. this Bilic chap, very attack-minded isn't he? Favoured a 4321 system in the past from what I've read. Downing as a no. 10 could be worth looking into as a 4th mid no?

4-2-3-1 mainly at Besiktas, 4-4-2 mainly with Croatia. I don't think it's yet clear what he'll do at West Ham but they have early EL games and that may give us a better idea.

      A) Do u think sunderland starting defenders will be at 4.5?
      B) Any swansea starting defenders at 4,5?
      C) Stoke didnt keep many clean sheets this year so maybe some starting defenders at 4.5?
      D) Any chance Jaanmat will be 5 or less?
      E) Do u think WBA defenders will be 5 or 5,5?
      F) Thanks 😉

jaamaat at 5 will be tempting if newcastle sort things out. is their coach a defensive or offensive minded one?

i was hoping for 4,5 sunderland defenders as they were in the relegation battle last year they cant come at 5 can they?

McClaren certainly isn't a Pulis type. The only hope I see of them being worth investment would be if they get a decent centre back, and Tiote gets back to his best, as well as good coaching.

        *Naughton, maybe?
*If Begovic leaves after prices are out, Butland will be 4,5
        *Janmaat will be exactly 5.
*Surely, 5 will be the base price IMO.

Matthew Ryan is currently the keeper for my Preston team on FM. His stellar performances in the Championship are attracting the likes of Man Utd and Spurs with bids of £5m, after I bought him in League 1 for £150k.

He's happy to stay as we are top of the Championship, he's showing some loyalty to the man who signed him as a youngster and trusted him with the number 1 jersey.

Unlike Hallam Hope, Luke Garbutt, Dwight Tiendalli and Jamie Paterson, who are all agitating for a move away.

I am going to struggle to support Garbutt when he plays now, I have him in my head as a traitor. I'm glad Everton ditched Hallam Hope, he must have an attitude problem if he's handing in transfer requests to me. He's been useless and now decides he's too big for the club. Judas.

Wait, what are we talking about again?

          I love your FM updates.

I took an edition round with me when i went travelling in 2006, got Pompey into season 2022 or something ridiculous. One of the low points of my trip was my laptop battery dying and not having a power-point to recharge, 40 minutes into a 12 hour train ride from Sydney to Melbourne.

I did the same thing recently with my Kindle version; I was travelling to Newcastle from London, was about to settle in for an FM session, and my Kindle had been on in my bag, so had no battery left. Heartbreak.

The worst was when my laptop broke just after Uni, wiping my FM08 Everton game. About 12 years in, 3 times Champions League winners, the stadium had been named after me - all gone. Devastation. I'd rather my degree had been wiped.

It's controlled now, only on season 3 as Preston, restricted to when I'm on the tube. I do sometimes wish I lived a few stops further away from work so I could play for 10 more minutes...

              I feel the pain, bro.

I used to live with a girl who had real trouble getting to sleep. She would often ask me if i minded playing it for a couple of hours before bed, so the dim light of the screen could send her off. Couldn't believe my luck!

That is real willpower. I used to start playing at around 7/8pm, think I'd been playing for an hour or two, then realise it was 3am.

Much easier on the Kindle version to play for a short time, but on the PC version I'd spent about 2 hours assembling a coaching team!

I used to love starting afresh. Get a new team, spend hours going through the coaching staff, the scouts, man for man who you have in the reserves, the youth team etc. Put all the deadwood up for sale and then think of people to fill the gaps to have 2 options for every position. All before you even press continue for the first time!

Starting a new game was such fun, I think the first pre-season took longer than the next 3 years. My first moves on every game were to get Robert Prosinecki on the coaching staff, and put bids in for Yaya Sanogo and Khouma Babacar,

It's basically a program built by a member of the FM community that you run whilst playing FM. It looks under the hood of your game/save and gives you all the true stats on the players/coaches/scouts. Ie, if your looking for a LW inside forward who's a good free kick taker you can refine your search to that and it will search the entire database of players. Give all the current ability and potential ability that's preset for your game 🙂 like I said, it's cheap, some people would prefer not to know all that info but I enjoy it for little side games away from my main save.

I loved it until it kept growing quicker than my laptop's capabilities. I even bought a brand new laptop once, almost solely to run an updated version of the game. But then the next edition required even more memory and processor speed etc and i just couldn't keep up!

In my 2nd year house with 4 mates, we used to play FM against each other on different laptops. They stopped after a while because I liked football much more than them, and used to always sign all of the best players before they'd scouted them. Same as them stopping playing FPL because I'd be about 200 points ahead by GW20...

...God, I am no fun. They plan light-hearted, banter-filled, equally contested games and I go too far and ruin them all. No wonder no one speaks to me.

                    I'll be in my room.

Because Germany have too many central midfielders... Can, Leitner, Geis, Arnold....

Can will surely play again, maybe he will come ahead of Leitner? I'm not sure at all.

Yep, Geis plays more of a holding role as well, and not sure they would start with two of them in a match they must win.

Hmm, just came across something I think is quite interesting. I was having a look at how often big teams keep clean sheets on the whole, as opposed to smaller sides, to try and gauge their value. I decided to split the table into the top seven (Chelsea, City, Arsenal, United, Spurs, Liverpool and Southampton), and the rest.

Top 7 teams kept a clean sheet in 35% of their matches, whereas the bottom 13 sides averaged a clean sheet around 26.5% of the time, so there's a decent gap as you would expect. However, I then decided to look at how they differed in predictability, which is when something caught my attention.

Against the bottom 13, top 7 sides kept a clean sheet 39.6% of the time, whilst bottom 13 sides playing each other managed one in 33% of their matches, which sees the lower ranked sides narrow the gap a little.

If you look at results just against the bottom eight though (West Brom, Leicester, Newcastle, Sunderland, Villa, Hull, Burnley & QPR) there's barely anything in it! Top 7 sides registered a clean sheet 42% of the time, whilst bottom 13 sides also managed one an impressive 39% of the time. Partly I think this is because weak teams struggle to score against anyone in the Premier League.

However, its notable that the top 7 sides perform significantly better than the rest of the bottom 13 against decent teams. The five teams who finished between 8th and 12th (Swansea, Stoke, Palace, Everton and West Ham) were kept out 35.7% of the time by the top 7, but only 23.3% of the time by bottom 13 opposition.

When you pay the premium for a defender from a top side, what you get is the ability to play them in almost any fixture. However, it seems that you don't get significantly better returns from the easiest matches, which is as good an argument for cheap defender rotations as you could possibly make. The top four last season (Chelsea, City, Arsenal and United) all finished with 7 clean sheets from their 16 matches with the bottom eight - a strong return. However, this was fewer than the number recorded by Swansea, West Ham and Sunderland, the same amount as Leicester, and only one more than Newcastle!

In short, keep fiddling with those tickers. 🙂

His attacking potential is huge, so its a different ball game. He's worth it on that basis for sure. If there were a full back at another club capable of around 5 goals and 5 assists in a season, then we'd happily pay a 1m mark up on their other defenders.

Saints are looking at Heaton apparently (Forster may be out for a year)

With Saints defenders likely being 6m minimun he could be worth a look.

They did keep 6 at home and 4 away in 18 after Pulis arrived. That is a lot. I'm not going to convince you but that's more than 50% of games, and they were safe for a lot of those.

essentially for me it comes down to a simple choice

Ivan and one less premium attacker v a cheaper defender and a premium attacker

it's not just his attacking threat though, that alone isn't enough. if you have a defender who gets that amount of attacking returns plus 15-20 CS minimum makes him worth the premium

The only other one who could compare was Baines, but not anymore

"When you pay the premium for a defender from a top side, what you get is the ability to play them in almost any fixture."

This is a key point IMO

a bit like paying extra for someone like Aguero on the basis of captaincy, you pay extra for a premium defender so that you don't have the worry about rotations and picking the wrong one

        Interesting thoughts Ludo!

Premium defenders are fixture proof imo, especially ones with attacking potential (Ivan) and I'd rather play them in a difficult fixture than take a chance with a cheap defender.

"Fabio wants a new experience," Borini's agent Marco De Marchi said to Italian sports newspaper Corriere dello Sport. "We expected more consideration from Liverpool. There are teams from all over Europe interested in him.

"Top clubs in Europe are keen on him, from the Premier League to the Bundesliga and there also clubs in Italy, but many clubs in Italy have had coaching changes and that has slowed things down."

What I've heard is he's a good attacking full back but has defensive gaps and loves a yellow card. He's 23 so development is possible, plus he'll have Wanyama over there to cover mistakes. I think it's a decent signing.

Yeah, it sounds like he has a lot to learn. Between them, the Koeman brothers and Fonte will see to that.

I'd get KDB over both. LFC would be laughing if they get 50m..then laughed at when they spend it 😉

              KDB doesn't count I don't think

              Pogba, Sterling and Wishere do

I really believe Sterling would be worth it.

Playing alongside the likes of Silva,Aguero,Pogba,KDB would help improve his game.

He does have talent and you're right, he'll do well when he plays with those players, just like he did with SAS.

The issue is his attitude, greed for money and unpredictability in big games. Hurts to say but it's more "acceptable" to have a bad patch of form at LFC than City. If he played the way he did in the second half of the season, then he'll be dropped for a very long time from your squad; which is filled with class if you ask me.

Your lot say that he has a poor attitude.

But i always have seen him work his socks off on the pitch for Liverpool.

Never complained on being subbed or benched.

Never complained on being played out of position all over the pitch.

I also remember once when Suarez scored a goal vs Stoke to get his hatty and he didn't pass the ball to Sterling who was open and still Sterling went ahead and congratulated Suarez. Most other players in that situation would have made their disgust evident. But Sterling didn't/

not sure where the attitude problem is. He just wants to play at a club that has the chance to win more silverware and are offering him more wages. Don't see much wrong in that.

He put his head in his hands for that goal for a few seconds before realising he had to celebrate. He does have an attitude problem off the pitch. He's got good work ethic going forward, but won't track back when playing in the front 3. I think he's relationship derailed at LFC because of Brendan's broken promises and playing him in pathetic positions. I hope the signing works out for your sake, I quite like City.
